Chapter 6. The Prey Becomes The Hunter
What they found out was that the shadows were effected by the light of Aslan. Since they were pure dark matter, and He was pure light, they repelled each other, and His light dominated whatever they were made of, destroying their very existence.
Angelina was not very good at fighting with a sword, her knowledge was limited and whatever she knew before she had forgotten. She had after all gone a year without touching a weapon.
"I feel like a small knife would be elegant for you, or perhaps a bow and arrow?" Edgar looked over his weapons.
She sighed, "I don't know, none of these weapons feel like me, you know?" She confessed.
He smirked, "well then, how about a gun?"
"They don't have those in Narnia," she shook her head, "at least I don't remember any."
Edgar opened an old chest and pulled out a long saber with a curved blade. It was long, but quite thin. It glistened under the light that came from the room. It had some sort of writing on the front in a language that Angelina didn't recognize, it definitely wasn't English.
"What is that?" Angelina asked, touching the weapon. It's handle was wrapped around with a red cloth that kept the hands safe from the metal.
Edgar handed it to her, "it has been one of my grandfather's old artifacts, he found it somewhere in Europe. I don't know what ancient language that is, but why don't you try out this blade? We will train with this."
The sword was great, a little hard to handle at first, but Angelina got used to it. So far she wasn't half as bad a swordsman as she thought. Of course, it was easy when Edgar had a couple of dummies in his mansion. It used to belong to his parents and was passed on by his grandfather. The house has been in the family for a very long time, full of secrets and hidden rooms.
After another full day of training, Edgar walked her home, like he always did when it was a little too late. He was a little similar to Edmund in that respect, he cared about people. Angelina pulled him in for a hug when they were next to her apartment door.
"Thank you Edgar," she pulled away and put her hand on his shoulder, "for everything. You turned into a friend I least expected to find. You found me at a really strange time in my life."
He smiled, "yeah I bet, losing your memory after a completely different realm sounds insane. It's been an honor getting to know you, I just wish I got the chance to see you in all your glory, and trust me, I will. We will find a way to get Aslan's light back."
She walked into her apartment. Her mother was sitting at the dinner table, pieces of paper dispersed around her. She was reading one and writing something down in her notebook. Angelina sat the sword down in her room and quickly skipped over to sit next to her mom.
"Bills," her mom didn't look up at her and explained.
"Hey mom," she suddenly asked, "what was my dad like?"
Her mom put the paper she was holding onto down on the table, "your father? Well...He was a little like you, his mind was all over the place. He had ambition and a passion for something."
"Why did he leave? Or what happened to him?" She asked.
Her mom sighed, "what do you remember about him?"
"Not much-he just said he had to go take care of something," Angelina looked down at the ground.
"Yes, that's exactly what happened. I don't know what to tell you kid, he just disappeared and never came back. Maybe he was in debt, maybe he got into something bad, but he just disappeared off the face of the earth," she took Angelina's hand, "but look at you kid, you turned around alright."
Angelina smiled, "I had a good mom."
Her mom laughed and returned back to her papers, "no kidding."
Pulling herself off the chair, Angelina strolled to her room, she locked the door behind her. Noticing that someone was sitting on her bed, she leaped for the sword and pulled it out. The person turned around slowly, a cup of hot tea in his hand.
"Is that the way to treat your sub conscience?" He asked, giving her a wide smile.
Angelina's eyes widened, "Conscience? I remember you!"
"Of course you do, I am your thoughts materialized in a person," he gave her a hug, the cup of tea disappeared from his hands as he wrapped them around her.
She wrapped her own hands around him, "what are you doing here? What took you so long!"
"Well, you forgot all about me, locked your mind away, and what I am doing here is to give you a warning. The shadows are coming kid, and you are going to have to fight," he put his hands on her shoulder and leaned in to tell her, "there is no time to call your friend, you will have to face this one on your own."
"But-I-I'm not ready! The light-"
"Will come when you most need it, you know the old tale of why God created the moon? To leave a light on earth in the dark whenever the sun goes to sleep," conscience said.
Angelina looked around at her tiny room, "but the branches outside my room are covering the moonlight! I have to get out, I have to go somewhere where the moon shines the brightest," she peaked out her window, "the park across the street!" Grabbing the scabbard that the sword came in and sneaked out of her apartment. Her mother was still busy counting the bills. When she stepped out of her house she thought for a second of what she was doing, what if she shadows would defeat her? What then? Bracing herself, she waited for the cars to pass and crossed the street to the park. It was already 10 pm and practically no one was out.
Closing her eyes and breathing out, she pulled the sword out, hearing it slide across the scabbard. She could see the moon reflecting in it. A gush of wind blew behind her and she turned around, bending her knees slightly and aiming the sword at the creature of darkness that stood right behind her.
"Keeper Of Light," she heard a whisper run through the trees, it was an old raspy voice like evil itself. It reminded her of the trolls Aslan once made her face to prove herself. She raised her chin, trying her hardest to conceal her fear.
"I can feel it," the shadow said, "your fear, it feeds me."
Angelina swallowed harshly and pulled the sword out a little more. Conscience appeared in front of the shadow, "afraid of this old thing? Fear is a superpower, what you fear you avoid, don't be afraid of fear, it tells you to fight! Use that fear against it!"
"You're alone," the shadow said.
Angelina looked to the side and another shadow appeared. She looked to the other side and there was another shadow. She didn't even want to look behind her. Putting her sword down she smiled, "so you called your buddies to fight a girl that fears you? You must be really afraid of me then. I am never alone."
Pulling her sword back up she ran towards the shadow. Right as she was in front of it, the sword went right through the shadow and came out clean on the other end. Although deformed slightly, the shadow vaporized back into its form, but now behind her. She turned around, seeing how they gathered above her ready to strike.
"You ran right into them without your powers?" Conscience appeared in front of her, "you're crazy!"
"You told me not to be afraid," she argued with him, still holding the sword high up in front of herself.
The shadow was about to engulf her when her fingertips started to tingle and light, like electricity ran down the strong of the blade, lighting up the letters as it did so. As if lightning jumping off the sword, the light hit the shadow and it disappeared into a million pieces in front of her.
"I think you found your weapon," conscience smiled.
Letting the sword go with one hand, she pulled her fingers into a fist and released them. The familiar feeling of Aslan's light felt like life to her. Focusing all of her strength on it, she watched it start glowing and let out another burst, now killing another shadow that was in front of her. Now that her blade was charged with the light, she had no problem striking the shadows and for good. There were only 4 of them there than night. The last one tried to get away, but she threw the sword and it landed right in the middle of its back, making it fall to the ground and crumble into pieces.
Picking up her sword, Angelina turned to conscience, "did you see that! I got them, all of them!" She ran up to him, hugging him.
"I saw kid, you did good!"
"Oh if only Edmund could see-" she paused and looked down at the ground, "I can't get back to them can I, even though I have these powers back, I still can't go back."
She heard a clap behind her and turned around seeing Edgar. He emerged from behind one of the park benches and was still clapping as he approached her.
"A little help would have been great thank you very much," she curtsied in front of him.
He laughed, "well, I sensed the shadows coming and was on my way until I saw that you didn't need much help. I guess the sword came in handy. Congratulations, the prey became the hunter."
"Well thank you, but I still have to find a way to get back to Narnia and defeat she who shall not be named," Angelina put the sword away.
Edgar shook his head, "I can't believe you shamelessly made a Harry Potter reference when speaking about Narnia."
