Chapter 20

"So why did he do it?" Trish asked Tania, tightly hugging herself as she looked outside from the only window in her little dormitory.

Carl had her locked up in some little secluded jail-like room where she had limited contact with the outside world and the only people she was allowed to speak to were him and Agent Johnson. She still wasn't sure what he wanted from her, but as long as he followed his part of their deal, she didn't care too much about it... for now.

Sitting on a bleak, uncomfortable cot close to the window, Tania heavily sighed as she hunched her back over, resting her arms on her legs like she was squatting. "Who knows, probably boredom or some longing for the good old days, you know how it usually goes."

Trish frowned, still gazing out the window as nightfall came. "But you never cared to ask, did you? You never cared about them, what they could've gone through all those years you guys weren't in contact. Now, you're using them for a promotion, and for what..."

"I'm just doing my job here," the FBI agent scoffed defensively, "don't guilt-trip me for stuff you have no idea about. Carter and I used to work in the same department together, that's the extent of our relationship. Like I said, it's nothing personal."

"Right 'cause him and Lee going out and about saving the world and leaving you behind isn't personal," Trish glanced at her from the corner of her eye, noticing how uptight her composure was. For all she knew, Tania was just lying to herself in order to excuse her horrible actions.

"I don't like being accused of things that are not true," Tania clenched her jaw, meeting her suspect's glare with a sharp intensity.

Trish simply shrugged her daggered gaze off. "Or you just don't like being called out and confronted with the truth."

Tania was not going to let herself be judged like that. "What do you know, huh? Matter of fact, what do you know about Carter or Lee? You've just decided to blindly trust two deadbeat ex-cops who just so happen to know about your father's-"

"Imma stop you right there," Trish cut her off. "First off, they caught me trying to sneak in one of my dad's meetings, though it was obviously a set-up to have him blackmailed or killed. The only reason my dad got away safe was because of me and the only reason I'm alive is because of Agent Carter and Inspector Lee."

"You were just a liability in their little adventure, can't you see that?" Tania said as she shook her head in disbelief, almost smiling. "They're just trying to relive the past, they don't actually want to help you if it doesn't help them first."

"You seem to know a lot about them considering you were estranged for all this time," her suspect commented.

Tania straightened her back. "They're using you just like they used me, it's kinda on brand for those two."

"Right, and this still "isn't personal"..." Trish rolled her eyes at the agent's incredibly revealing and biased undertone.

However, Tania stuck by her words. "It isn't, but that doesn't take away the fact that they were the ones who got the fame and the good reputation for saving Consul Han's daughter without even giving me the slightest credit. It's hard to forget shit like that."

"Well, this isn't better, is it?" Trish gestured at the cot and the rest of the tiny dormitory. "Going against people's back, people that trusted you, assumed the best in you, needed your help?"

"Hey, this is different," the agent said in a firm tone. "Do I have to keep telling you that?"

This made Trish smirk. "Yeah, 'cause it's clearly bullshit."

Tania closed her eyes and shook her head, too tired to argue with Trish about the choices she made, ones that she hoped were for the better and not the worse. "Well then I think we'll leave this conversation at that."

"At least we can agree on that," Trish turned her back to her.

Tania got up on her feet, making the keys to the dorm jingle and it made her suspect flinch at the sound of them. Heading for the door, she rested her hand on the cold, metal handle.

"I know you only want to save your dad, Trish," the agent said without facing her. "I think you're really brave for doing all of this, going all this way to get him out of harm's way, I really do. Just remember that some people don't change and they can't always be saved. Sometimes, you have to do things that's gonna hurt others in the moment, but will help them in the end. I just hope you know what you're doing and what you got yourself into."

She then left the room and locked it in silence behind her.
