Chapter Three

Cass tossed and turned in her new bed, staring at the wall and ceiling in frustration.

Throwing off the cozy woolen covers and sitting up, she squinted as a knife of bright silver moonlight sliced through the air, resting on her adjusting eyes.

Dust particles floated in the air as she heard Andrew's gentle breaths from the next room over. Those were the only sounds that broke the silence except for the steady rhythm of crickets and the occasional hoot of an owl.

Every sound seemed ten times louder to her then it really was as she felt restless.

Then she started as she then heard the beautiful soothing sounds of Andrew snoring loudly.

Raising an eyebrow, Cass listened as it got loud enough to mimic the sound of a grizzly bear.

At least he seemed to be resting nicely, Cass thought annoyed.

She couldn't go to sleep worth anything. And definitely not with that racket.

Turning toward the window and staring up at the quarter moon, she guessed it didn't really matter if Andrew snored or not.

Too much was going on in her mind anyway, as her head was filled with restless thoughts and ideas for finding Varian.

Calliope had to have some idea or artifact to help search for him. She just had to... otherwise Cass didn't have any idea what her next step would be. She hated how much she felt useless and helpless not knowing what to do, while Rapunzel, even in the dark of things, always seemed to have a plan.

They had gone through so much on that journey for the moonstone and even more to wake her up from her insanity.

Even with the odds stacked up against her, she always seemed to find a way.

So how was it she couldn't seem to do anything great or meaningful on her mission?

Cass felt a pang.

She missed and regretted never saying a word to Rapunzel and the others about her choice to leave them and go out on her own. Well except for Hubert who had somehow convinced her to let him tag along, but she was still leaving everyone and everything behind.

But she still knew deep down it had probably been the right choice.

Because what had she been expecting? A fanfare of goodwill and tearful goodbyes?? She was hated. Hated by everyone.

Swallowing hard, Cass brought her knees to her chest and squeezed them tightly as she tried to hold back the brimming tears.

And now here she was again.

Throwing herself a pity party because she had made horrible decisions and was now paying for it.

She HATED it. She hated every part of herself for being this way, for being weak and stupid.

She dug her fingernails into her palm frustrated, drawing some blood from her own hand. The pain didn't help at all as it only brought more grief and guilt into her soul. Just more stupidity... did she really think hurting herself was going to fix all her past crimes?

It wasn't; and it never would be. What idiot would do this? Only one who wanted attention and pity, but she didn't want either of those things. Never did want anyone thinking she needed pity or compassion, because that made you weak. And weakness is what a soldier could never afford to have.

Suddenly a brief shadow over the window caught her eye as it flashed past, waking her out of her guilt.

She narrowed her eyes and trained her ears for a moment before hearing the gentle scuff of shoes on the dirt.

Cass uncurled and got up slowly, grabbing her dagger, just in case, and approaching the open shutter window carefully.

Someone was out there.

Cass peered out the window, her eyes darting around looking for the shadow's owner. Nothing was in sight except for a couple of birds nestled in the nearby trees, their heads tucked under their wings as they slept.

She had known she had seen someone.

So why couldn't she find them?

Feeling uneasy, Cassandra quickly slipped on her boots and grabbed her sword as she jumped out the window and landed on the ground outside.

A gentle evening breeze blew, stirring the leaves and rustling them gently as she tried to listen for the person's footsteps.

This couldn't be good.

If it were just someone walking or minding their own business, they shouldn't be nowhere in sight, they would be out in the open. Cass felt like either it was a spy or something else, someone who knew and had a reason to hide.

Her years of training and instinct took over when she suddenly whipped around and grabbed the offender's wrist as they tried to approach her, slamming them down hard over her head on the ground as she flipped them over.

And not a moment too soon as the small damp cloth fell from their hand and into the dirt. The attacker's intent obviously trying to use some chloroform on her to knock her out.

Crying out, the stranger tried to pull out a dagger from their coat, but Cass twisted it out of their hands as they spiraled through the air.

Hitting the grass hard, the person tried to fight back, but Cass kicked them in the gut and drew her sword pinning the unknown person down as she threw their dagger away into the trees.

"Who are you?", Cass demanded pointing her sword against their throat, "And what were you trying to do?!"

Rays of moonlight filtered through the leaves, showing the stranger in patches of shadow and light.

The person was hooded and unnatural colored hair covered their face well on top of an eye mask as they held their hands in the air in surrender, "Please!! D-Don't kill me!!", the stranger pleaded.

"Ha! You have a lot of nerve saying that when you just tried to stab me buddy!"

"I-I wasn't t-trying to kill you!", they cried, "Honest!!"

"Then what were you doing sneaking around huh? And tell me who you are!!!", she yelled as Andrew ran out of the caravan hearing the commotion.

His hair down and wearing a red bathrobe with matching bunny slippers, he was an interesting sight.

He looked around groggily, his hair in a complete mess as some kind of cream was slathered on his face, "What the heck is going on here?"

Cassandra glanced at him and any other time she would have laughed, but she was to livid to even find one part of his appearance amusing.

"This, person, was sneaking around and trying to... was trying to do something! And they won't tell me what!!", Cass yelled poking her sword a little closer at them, "And if they don't answer in the next five seconds I'm stabbing them through!"

"Whoa, Whoa, Whoa!! Calm down Cassandra!", Andrew yelped running over and trying to pull her sword away from the stranger's throat.

Cass pushed him away angrily, "Don't get involved sleeping beauty! Just go back to bed!"

Andrew grabbed the hilt of the sword, "You need to calm down!!"

The two yanked on the sword, both fighting for control of the sharp weapon.

The stranger squeaked out in terror as the sword swung through the air, finally slicing across their chest from the two's dispute. The person cried out and curled up instinctively.

Andrew gasped and narrowed his eyes, having enough.

"Sorry Cass.", he apologized as he swiped his foot under her ankles, causing her to fall into the ground as he kicked her in the gut, "Enough's enough."

Throwing her sword away from her into the ground, Andrew went over to the stranger.

Cass fell back, sitting there speechless and angry as the stranger tried to back up and escape.

"I don't think so.", Andrew said blocking the way as he grabbed their shoulders firmly, "You're still not off the hook."

"W-What do you... what do you w-want with me?!", the stranger cried, their voice cracking like an awkward teenager. They tried to break free of his hold, but Andrew's grip was strong as he held them back.

Cass got up and walked over to the two, rubbing her stomach as she glared at them both.

"What was that for, if you were just gonna keep them around anyway?", she asked disgusted as Andrew held down them down.

"Because you were swinging that thing around like a lunatic. I couldn't have you hurting someone like that Cassandra.", he responded.

"I was not. It only got that way because you decided to stick your nose where it wasn't wanted and got involved."

"You were getting to violent."

Cass rolled her eyes, "You think my breathing is to violent Hubert. I don't think you even know what true violence is anymore."

Andrew sighed and pulled the stranger's hands behind their back, tying them. "Just a precaution."

He then led them into the caravan as Cass followed, her arms crossed as she squinted her eyes at the attacker suspiciously.

"I w-wasn't trying to hurt anybody...", the stranger said meekly as they let Andrew push them into a seat.

"Well then tell us what were trying to do then? If you want us to let you go we need some answers.", Andrew said crossing his arms he then glanced at the torn shirt in concern where they had been cut, "Are you bleeding?"

"Are you seriously asking if they're okay?! When they just tried killing me!", Cass yelled.

"Are you okay?", Andrew repeated patiently ignoring her rant.

"Huh? Oh, umm.. I'm good..", they answered shifting uncomfortably.

Cass stepped forward, "First things first I'm taking that ridiculous mask off."

Andrew held up his arm, "Wait Cass, let them talk first."

"Are you even kidding me?! Why wou-?!"

"Because they deserve a chance to try to explain themselves first.", he interrupted as he looked at the stranger, "So are you sure you're not cut?"

The stranger nodded as Andrew locked the door and windows of the caravan and lit a lamp, giving them better light to see the mysterious person.

They wore a black trench coat with a dark purple shirt with a hood. Along there legs they had belts and pockets lined with weapons on their dark grey pants and knee combat boots.

Their black mask covered their eyes and nose, the violet design looking like a spider's web. Their hair was violet too with a couple of hot pink strips.

Cass slammed her hand on the wall, over the stranger's head and cleared her throat, "Listen, you're not dying or anything, so stop stalling. Who are you and why were you sneaking around MY caravan? What were your attentions?", she demanded.

"If you cooperate this will go much faster.", Andrew said already playing good cop.

They swallowed and sighed, "I was trying... I was trying to umm.. steal your horse.."

"You. Were. What.", she asked dangerously.

"T-trying to s-steal your horse?"

Andrew looked at Cass as she started to radiate furious energy, "Umm hey Cass you need to stay calm...", he tried.

Andrew knitted his brow and facepalmed as Cass grabbed their shirt and ripped off the mask, "That's it, I've had enough.", she then backed up her face pale, "Is... Is this some kind of joke?"

She dropped the mask as she stared at the nervous, scared, sheepish grin of a nerdy looking teenager boy.

His bright blue eyes shone with fear at her as she stared at him open mouthed.

"He looks almost like...", Andrew started, "... but that doesn't make any sense.."

Cass felt like her heart was in her throat as she locked eyes on the boy.

Cass swallowed, "Who the hell are you?!"
