Nigerian

~you're Nigerian~

Summary: being full African and having a white boyfriend was sometimes a struggle but Ann and Zachary just make it (barely) work.

Ann never really fit in whether it was in school or at home. Just everywhere she was different. Having African blood was inevitable and not something Ann could help. And neither was all kinds of culture being rubbed off on her. She never fit in at home because she acted American, but at school she didn't fit in because she acted African.

Ann just couldn't catch a break, but she got used to it. Through kindergarten, to middle school and up until she got her degree. Ann never really minded, it was just something that happened. But it did bother Zachary whenever he experienced it. And right now, it was definitely bothering Zachary.

Ann's parents were over for dinner at the two's shared house. And so far it was going fucking awful. Not even three steps into the house Ann's mother was complaining about how she couldn't smell Nigerian food being cooked.

"It's like I didn't even raise you!" Folake, Ann's mom, exclaimed. Ann's lips parted but she didn't say anything, she only silently ushered them in like she was taught to.

"Where is that boy of yours?" Her mother asked once Ann had sat her down in the couch. Ann looked up from her hands and answered in Yoruba, their native language.

"He's cooking in the kitchen." Ann's dad laughed at this but Folake gave her daughter a sharp look. "Zach, come here." She called in Yoruba.

"Give me a second." He replied. Ann fought a smirk as her parents gave each other shocked looks, obviously surprised he understood her. Zach walked out of the kitchen just moments later, wiping his wet hind on his pants. His cheeks were flushed from the heat and his dirty blond hair was messy but Ann thought he looked cute.

"Good evening sir, ma." He greeted them standing awkwardly by where Ann was seated. Ann's parents never really liked Zach but they said they preferred him to 'all those African men who don't treat women right'.

Ann's dad grunted in acknowledgement while Ann's mother spoke up, "Good evening. Have you been treating Adebisi well?"

Zach nodded and grabbed his girlfriends hand to give it a quick squeeze before he spoke himself, "Just like a queen should be treated. I also made dinner, I hope spaghetti is alright?" Zach asked, feeling nervous because Ann's parents didn't really like American food much.

"Adebisi!" Fola scolded. "Why is he the one in the kitchen? You should be the one cooking for him."

Ann didn't give it much thought and apologized to her mother. Zach resisted the urge to roll his hazel eyes at Ann's mothers statement and gave his girlfriends shoulder a quick squeeze before he left again to set the table. Pretending he couldn't hear Ann's mother scolding her in Yoruba, Zach finished up what he was doing before calling his girlfriend and her parents.

After being seated with slight complaining from Ann's dad, the four of them silently sat and ate their meal. The silence only being broken with quiet small talk or the couples talking amongst themselves, but it didn't exclude the awkward and tense eye contact made. It was peaceful for a small time until all hell seemed to break loose.

"Mama." Ann called out hesitantly after swallowing a forkful of the spaghetti.

"Yes darling." She answered dropping her fork and looking at her daughter with calm features. Ann sighed and glanced at Zach before spitting out what she had been meaning to tell her mother since she arrived.

"I signed a record deal."

Ann's chest felt heavy as the words fell from her lips, her mom's gaze and her father's shocked expressions made her feel sick to her stomach. Zach reached for her hand under the table and gave it a quick squeeze for reassurance. Fola blinked once, then twice before letting out a dry laugh. Ann's little bubble of hope instantly popped as she stared at her mother who was now staring pointedly at her.

"What is this nonsense!" She snapped, tilting he head to stare at her daughter who was shrinking in her seat.

"I-I'm starting m-my music ca-career." Ann stuttered out. Ann's father seemed to snap out of his trance as he stared at his daughter with the same look as his wife.

"We didn't send you to school to do this! You will get nowhere with this!" Ann's father was yelling now. Zach looked appalled at Ann's father and moved his arm to wrap around his girlfriends quivering shoulders. He glanced at her gave her cheek a kiss before directing his gaze to Ann's parent who were now whispering harshly between themselves.

"You have got to be kidding me!" Ann's mom yelled standing up from her chair. "I didn't raise an idiot and I will not be known for raising one. You will stop this nonsense immediately."

"You have no choice." Ann's dad spoke. "This rubbish is not allowed in my house."

"Emi ko le gbagbọ ti o ba wa ara mi (I can't believe you are my own)" Ann's mother yelled. And that was when Zach knew she had gone too far.
"That. Is. Enough." Zach yelled the last word. His breathing was heavy as he stared Ann's parents down. Their faces froze with shock as Ann let out a sob, covering her face with her hands, curls falling in an attempt to cover her face.

"Enough. You have a daughter who has been doing exactly what you have wanted for over 22 years, what else could you want! I don't mean to be rude but this is out of control. The way you are acting is absolutely childish." Zach said calmly tightening his arm around Ann's shoulder. Ann's mom scoffed and stared pointedly at Zach.

"Me! Childish! As if." She scoffed standing for the table. "When my daughter decided to find a real job and stop crying call me." She said before gabbing her bag and ushering her husband through the door. Zach stared shocked at Ann's parents retreating form before sighing and averting his attention to his girlfriend.

"Hey, it's okay." Zach cooed wiping her tears with his thumb. She sniffled and nodded her head, leaning into his touch. He smiled at how cute she looked when her eyes fluttered closed and gave her a quick kiss on the forehead before standing up. Zach started to pack away the table and Ann curled up on the chair and watched him with a smile on her face, tears long forgotten.

"Love you." She said softly, yawning right after.

"Love you too baby." He replied walking into the kitchen to pack away the leftovers. He came back to the dining table not even five minutes later to see Ann completely curled up on the chair snoring softly.

"Aww." He cooed, brushing a few stray hairs from her face. He smiled down at her and kissed her head one last time before carrying her off to their shared bedroom so they could cuddle to sleep.

Gosh, it feels like this took forever. And I can't write a part 2 to 'first interracial couple' I have no inspiration to write one, or any ideas. AND 2 k! Like how did this happen. Hope you liked this one. Please do request.
