"Goodbye" part 2

"How was school dear?"

"Fine." Maliyah answered her mom in a grumble, shaking her completely drenched hair out.

Water flew everywhere as Maliyah shook her head similar to how a dog does. Maliyah had missed the school bus because she had gotten stopped by a teacher who was asking if she was doing okay, which was ironic because she was now the cause of a not so great day. When Maliyah texted her mom the response she received was 'walk, schools only three blocks away'. Since she didn't have a car and since Thomas usually drove her to and from school, Maliyah ended up walking those three blocks in pouring April showers.

"Maliyah!" Her mom gasped, flicking water from her face. Maliyah rolled her eyes and moved to the fridge, craving something sweet. "I'm serious! How was school?" Her mom asked once again.

Maliyah sighed and pulled the box of chocolates Thomas gave her out of the fridge. To be honest, school wasn't fine. Apart from walking home in the rain, she always saw Thomas and always felt a piece of her heart break every time she saw him. The two always seemed to lock eyes in the hallways or in class but Thomas always broke eye contact and looked away. It has been two months and Maliyah was just tired of it all.

It didn't help that the two had band together, sometimes for three whole periods. Every time Maliyah glanced at Thomas she always played the wrong note on the bass which tended to throw everyone off. Maliyah's teachers could tell something was up, her band instructor could tell something was up. God, even Maliyah's parents knew something was wrong.

"You know what mom? Things aren't fine. I finally found someone who made me feel like I was on top of the world but you and dad ran him away. And everything just seems to be spiraling down the drain." Maliyah spoke just above a whisper, putting the box of chocolates away. Her appetite suddenly disappearing.

With that Maliyah trudged towards the stairs, clothes heavy and wet with rain. Maliyah could hear her mother calling out for her but she was just so upset and couldn't find it in herself to care. She didn't even bother changing, she just fell face forward onto her bed and fell asleep.

_

When Maliyah woke up her ears instantly picked up the sound of harsh whispers outside her door. She didn't want whoever it was to know she was awake so she quietly creeped out of her bed and moved so her ear was pressed against the door.

"Please let me see her." Maliyah instantly recognized Thomas' voice.

"Did I not make myself clear? You will leave my house before I call the authorities." Maliyah's dad harshly snapped.

"Michael! That won't be necessary." Maliyah could tell her mother was uncertain about kicking Thomas out. It was silent outside the door for about a minute and Maliyah was starting to think they had left. But a sigh quickly diminished the thought.

"Fine." Thomas said, "But let me give her this." Thomas begged, his voice pleading. When Maliyah's father agreed to whatever it was she quickly scrambled to her bed and acted as if she was sleeping the whole time. The door creaked open as Thomas shuffled in, trying to be as quiet as he could.

"Hi baby." Thomas kissed her forehead. "I can't stay long, but I just want you to know how much I love you. I've got to go, but I'll leave these for you." After Thomas said that Maliyah heard the crinkle of a paper and a light clink before he placed a hesitant kiss on her lips before shuffling out of the room.

Maliyah waited a few minutes and sat up in her bed when she heard the front door slam shut. She quickly turned on the bedside table lamp and looked to see what Thomas had dropped off for her. She was shocked to see a ring, but could obviously tell it wasn't an engagement ring, as well as a letter that was on the cutest piece of stationary.

Hello my love, it's been a while hasn't it. Gosh, I have so many things to say but so little space, but I'll try and do my best for you.

First off I want to apologize. For causing any heartache, because I know I've been experiencing my own. Everyday I think of you and your gorgeous smile, sad to know that it disappeared because of me. So this is me asking for my first favor, smile for me. Please.

I know things seem a bit tough but you will be fine. A beautiful girl like you will find someone new, better. And probably less of a dork who has a better life planned out for the two of you. My next favor, move on. I just want you to be happy.

I know you're probably pissed at your parents, just because I know you that well. But don't be, they only want what's best for you and they are most likely right. I would probably do the same, I understand. I'm not saying forgive them right away, just don't shut them out. Sorry love, don't have a favor for this one.

Finally, don't forget me. I may not be apart of your life anymore but I will always cherish what we had and I hope you'll do the same. I love you with all of my heart and It hurts me to lose you but it's for you.

I want you to promise me that the ring, hopefully I didn't forget it, will remind me of you. You don't have to wear it, just keep it safe. That's my last favor, just promise me that you keep apart of me with you.

I love you so much, and if this is goodbye forever I just want you to know that you are my world and that everyday I will still be thinking of you.

~ Your beloved Thomas

Maliyah didn't even try to hold in the sob that escaped her when she finished reading the letter. She felt frozen, to shocked to process it all. She heard footsteps bounding up the stairs but she pushed them to the back of her head. She felt so overwhelmed by it all as she shakily took the ring and slipped it on her ring finger. It was the perfect size which only cause more sobs to fall from her mouth.

Her mother burst through the door first, her father not far behind, worried about their daughter. When they asked her what was wrong she shook her head and shakily handed them the letter. She moved a hand to cover her mouth in an attempt to shush her cries but only cried harder when the ring moved to her line of vision.

"Oh god." Maliyah's mom whimpered as she finished the letter. Something in her felt as if it had been ripped out and violently stabbed when she saw her daughter holding her hands tightly, staring sadly at the ring on her fingers.

"What have we done!" Her mom cried out turning to face her husband. He shook his head and handed the letter to his daughter who snatched it out of his hands and hugged it to her chest.

"I'm sorry." Her dad choked out, his throat felt as if it was closing. "I'm so sorry dear." He cried moving to sit next to her on the bed.

He opened his arms for her but she didn't move or jump into them like he hoped. He choked back a sob as she quickly stood up and proceeded to angrily point at the two.

"I don't care what you say, I'm going to find him." With that she promptly ran down the stairs and out of the front door, slipping on a pair of flats before she left.

Maliyah could feel her lungs burning and her feet aching as she ran through her neighborhood. Luckily Thomas only lived two streets down and she quickly made it to his house without passing out. Not caring that the sun had set and that the stars shine brightly above her she slammed her hand down on the doorbell, hoping, praying she woke someone up.

Maliyah nearly cried at the sight of Thomas standing in front of her shirtless with messy hair and sleepy eyes. But his eyes seemed to pop oped when he saw her standing at his door in the middle of the night. She didn't even give it a second thought before she launched herself at Thomas, kissing him with all the passion she could muster. And Thomas kissed back, pulling her closer to his body and shuffling them inside.

"I love you." She nearly shouted before crashing her lips to his again. Their lips moved in sync as the two collapsed onto his couch, heavily making out.

"I love you so much more." Thomas moaned as he pulled away reluctantly. They stared at each other for a bit, admiring and taking in what had changed.

"I'm never loosing you again." Maliyah sighed as she placed a hungry kiss on Thomas' lips.

"Never." Thomas mumbled as he kissed her neck.
