ARIANA
"Happy Birthday my darling girl!" My mother said, kissing the top of my head. I turned my head away from her in embarrassment.
"OMG mom! Don't do that again! I'm thirteen, emphasis on the TEEN!" I whispered to her because we were sitting out in a restaurant celebrating my birthday.
She rolled her blue eyes and pushed a wrapped present towards me, her eyes wide in excitement. My thirty four year old mother, Helen, looked like she was my big sister and honestly it was as if she was. Ever since my dad died, my mother and I had become closer than ever.
Every time she would feel sad I was always there to cheer her up and she was there for me. She was my best friend.
I smiled at her and took the present from her. The red wrapping paper shined, almost looking like a mirror. I glanced at my reflection not feeling any different. My straight light brown hair, my brown eyes. I felt as if turning into a teenager would magically change my appearance over night but sadly this wasn't the case. My pudgy cheeks were still there and the braces in my teeth didn't help much.
I sighed and opened the gift.
It was a beautiful locket with a beautiful design. I opened it to reveal a picture. It was of a man and a women. The man was at least 23 years old. His blond hair was slicked back on his head with his green eyes twinkling in happiness. He was holding a women who seemed a few years younger, her blond hair curled into ringlets framing her face. Her blue eyes mimicking the mans.
It was my mother and father on their wedding day.
"I know how much you love this picture of your dad, and the design on the locket was made especially for you because I know how much you love the woods." My mother said, smiling sadly at the picture of her late husband.
I couldn't help but stroke the locket wondering how much it cost. "What is this made out of mom?" If it was silver, I would know she spent too much for it.
She shifted her eyes around the restaurant clearly avoiding my question.
"Mom." I said sternly, my eyes narrowing.
She sighed and pouted. "Platinum." She whispered.
My eyes bugged out of my head.
"What! That's like the most expensive element there is! What the heck mom!" Even worse than I thought!
"Shhhh!" She held her finger to her lips when a couple that were a few tables away, looked our way curiously. "So rude." I heard one of them say as if they were standing right next to me.
This had been happening to me for almost a week now. My eyesight, my nose, my hearing, basically three of my five senses seemed to be getting...better? I just ignored it and chalked it up to puberty.
"I know sweetie but compared to you, it's nothing so don't even worry about it okay."
I pushed it back towards her.
"I appreciate this mom but I can't, seriously."
"NO TAKE BACKSIES!" She yelled out all of a sudden. The couple that was complaining earlier, jumped in there seats causing me to giggle.
"Fine!" I took it back, clasping it around my neck. It nestled perfectly against the hollow of my throat.
A man in a suit was walking towards us, his badge flashing with the word manager on it.
"Um, I think we should go mom."
My moms eyes shifted towards the man and she immediately threw down a few twenty dollar bills. She grabbed my hand and we ran out the door.
"Keep the change!" She yelled as the manager ran towards us.
We ducked into the car and mom peeled out of the restaurant parking lot, laughing like a hyena.
This was the third restaurant we had to leave in a hurry. She was so childish and one day she was going to land me in jail but I don't know what I would without her.
My mom stopped in the driveway of our house and then turned to me slowly, a wide smile on her face. I stared at her with wide eyes because of how creepy she looked.
"I have another surprise for you." She said in a low voice.
I shifted in my seat, a little terrified.
She flew out the car and opened my door before I could object. She grabbed my hand and pushed me through the unlocked door of our house.
I tried to peer through the darkness, my eyes narrowing trying to make out the moving shapes.
I rolled my eyes and turned on the lights.
"SURPRISE!"
I heard a loud scream next to me and looked at my mother who was dramatically heaving her chest up and down. "OMG! That was so surprising! Right Ari?" She looked at me pointedly and then gestered to the guests standing in the room.
I stood there with a blank expression. My mother jammed her elbow in my arm making me gasp in pain. "OW!"
"Okay jeez!" I grabbed my face in shock and gasped in surprise making my grandparents and some of my friends laugh.
"Nana! Papa!" I ran to my grandparents and hugged them.
They gave me a present and said happy birthday. I smiled and went to talk to some of my friends.
By the end of the night I was exhausted. We were dancing and playing games. At one point I had groaned and slapped my forehead at least 50 times as I witnessed my mother doing the Macarena.
I checked the time to see it was 10 and laughed. Usually, I don't sleep until 1 but right now my body was too tired and in pain to be ignored.
My mother was talking to my grandparents when I tugged on her arm, rubbing my tired eyes. Even though I was thirteen today, I always acted like this with my mother, she brought it out of me.
Her face softened. "Alright everyone! Thanks for coming!"
My grandparents were the last to leave.
My mother went into the living room, dragging some of my presents with her.
I sat down heavily next to her on the couch. I felt a sharp pain in my stomach but it passed just as it came so I didn't think much of it.
My mother shook some of my presents, trying to guess what they contained. I rolled my eyes at her childlike eyes.
"Oh! This one looks expensive! Open it!" She pushed a big box towards me. I ripped through it kind of excited.
I gasped in excitement. It was an XBOX!
A couple of presents later and I was flying on cloud nine. My presents were awesome! I wish I was thirteen forever!
"Okay sweetie! Let's go to sleep. We can clean up tomorrow." My mother stared at me, a strange look in her eye.
"What?" I asked touching my face. "Is something on my face?"
She smiled. "No, it's just that I can't believe how old you've gotten! You're thirteen! You're like, almost an adult!" She said wiping away fake tears. Actually, I won't be thirteen until 11:15, tonight.
I grinned. "I'll always be your little kid, mom."
She laughed and kissed my forehead. She frowned all of a sudden and then pressed her hand to my forehead. Her cold hand felt nice and I closed my eyes in exhaustion.
"Sweetie! You're burning up!" She shook me and my eyes opened. I yawned and got up shuffling up the stairs.
"I'm just tired mom. I'm going to bed." I told her yawning again.
But she followed after me a concerned look in her eye.
Just as I got into bed after changing and brushing my teeth, my mom forced some medicine down my throat and stroked my hair.
She left, running out the door but was back in a minute. She shoved a thermometer in my mouth and I waited about two minutes. I looked at the time and saw that it was 11:15 pm. I was officially thirteen years old.
My mom took the thermometer and checked my temperature.
"What?" She said in confusion. "127 degrees? It must be broken." She told herself shrugging.
She caressed my cheek. "Do you want me to stay with you?"
"No, mom. I'm fine, I promise." I cuddled against my pillow and closed my eyes.
I heard a sigh and then the door closed.
I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of my mom and dad at my side celebrating my birthday with a ghost of a smile on my lips.

I woke up with a gasp. The necklace I was wearing, burned through my skin. I threw it across the room, feeling the skin sizzle off my hand. What the hell?
My hair was drenched in sweat and my covers were on the floor. I looked at the time to see it read 11:32. I was only asleep for a few minutes.
I cried in pain as I felt a jolt of pain shoot through my head to my toes. I tried to keep my cries quiet but in the end I ended up screaming in pain.
My mother burst through the door and found me covered in sweat and tears.
"Mom." I cried. "Everything hurts."
I was sitting on my bed trying not to move my body.
"Okay let's get you out of bed, okay?" My mother said with a worried look.
I nodded my head in agreement.
My mother touched my arm and I screamed. It was as if she burned me with fire.
"ARI!" She jumped in the air and backed away from me afraid to touch me again.
"That's it I'm calling an ambulance." She said when I started to sob.
Just as she pulled out her phone, I screamed again but this time so did my mother.
My arm bent at an angle, scaring me.
My mother looked at me with fear.
"Mom! What is happening!" Am I being possessed by a demon?
I screamed again when my other arm did the same. I felt the metal bend (A/N: Toph! 🙃) on my teeth as they grew. I spat out blood and pieces of whatever was left of my braces.
For 10 minutes straight, my bones broke by themselves and then mended on their own. My mother never moved from her position, watching me struggle with pain with an expression that had me worried even though I was basically blind from the tears that were constantly flowing.
"Mommy." I said weakly when my body seemed to stop attacking itself.
She snapped out of her state and ran to me. She touched my weirdly bent arm checking to see if it would hurt me.
"Mom, what's wrong with me?" I whispered in a hoarse voice.
My mom was wiping her tears and she smiled, trying to be brave for me. "I don't know sweetie but your going to be fine." She looked away. "She's going to be fine." She said to herself.
And then with a loud crack, my spine broke. I went limp in my bed and screamed in the most painful way.
My mother covered her mouth in shock and fell to her knees by my bed, her sobbing reaching my ears.
She took her phone in her hands and smoothed down my hair. "You're going to be fine. I promise." She started to punch in some numbers but kept messing up because of how much she was shaking.
Just as she was about to press call, her phone slipped out of her hands because what she was witnessing was something that made her question her sanity.
My body seemed to start sprouting with hair, my nose became longer, my teeth became sharper and my body seemed to become bigger.
My mother gasped in fear and backed up into a wall.
I whined in confusion at the way she was staring at me not realizing what I was.
"Mom!" At least that's what I was trying to say. Instead it came out like a sharp bark and I looked behind me expecting to see a dog, instead I found a wolf. The dresser mirror showed my mother pressed against the wall with her jaw dropped to the floor.
But that's not what scared me. A black and white wolf stared back at me, mimicking my every move.
With great shock I realized I was this wolf.
I turned to my mother and jumped off the bed. She flinched in fear when I padded to her position, whining for her to tell me what was happening. I nudged her leg with my nose and whined again.
"G-get away from me!" She said kicking me away with her foot. From the force of her push, my head cracked on the floor.
She gasped again and bent down, grabbing my large wolf head, checking for any injuries. I whined again and looked at my mother. Fear was shining in my eyes and that must have snapped her out of her fearful state.
She draped a blanket over me and picked me up, well she tried to pick me up, and put me back on my bed. Just before I passed out, my mother clutched my paw in her hand. "You're gonna be just fine." She whispered.
I couldn't help but feel that everything from now on, wasn't going to be fine.
