Chapter 3
When Anna led Clay into the living room, he saw a lot of pictures of some girl on the walls. In some she was a few years old and in some she was a dozen. Anna smiled at him and said:
-- Please ... Sit down. -- she pointed to the chair next to her.
Clay, a little confused, sat down in the chair, and then Anna took down one of the pictures and walked over to him. She showed it to him and said:
-- This is Wanda. She was about your age then. -- she smiled slightly. -- You look like her.
-- Really? -- Clay asked shyly.
-- Yes. A lot. You know... -- took a closer look at him. -- You got her eyes.
-- Yeah... -- suddenly Edgar appeared in the living room and propped himself up against the doorframe. -- And do you know who your father is? -- he asked.
-- No. I don't know. -- said Clay sadly.
-- Right... so she finally came to her senses. She left that... Robert. Good for her.
-- Edgar. -- said anna and looked menacingly at her husband.
-- What? I never liked him. And I hope he doesn't turn out to be the boy's father. -- pointed his head at Clay.
-- And why is that? -- asked Clay and got up from his chair.
-- I won't hide it... if you really are the son of my daughter and this... Robert, then... we have nothing to talk about. -- said, crossing his arms.
-- Why, was there something wrong with him for you to say that? -- asked Clay increasingly angry.
-- He was human. There was something wrong with him.
-- And you're not?
-- You know... somehow I'm not. I, unlike you and your father, am a wizard. Did you know?
-- Wait... what? What wizard? What are you even talking about?
-- You don't know? Me, your grandmother, Wanda and our son have magical abilities. And you don't.
-- And how would you know that?
-- Because you're a hybrid. And they almost never have magical abilities. So do you.
And in that moment he regretted coming here. Anna was very nice to him and he liked her. But her husband. It was like he hated him for existing. And he didn't understand that.
-- Edgar! Stop it at last. -- joined in the conversation by Anna.
-- No. I won't stop. Not only did my own daughter get involved with a man, but what do I find out? That they're having a baby together. No, no... and I told her. I told her to leave him, that it would end badly. But she wouldn't listen to me. And then... as usual.
-- Yeah. Because you've always been such a saint. Let me remind you, you're the reason Wanda ran away from us. Don't you remember? You forbade her to get involved with Robert. So? Now you got what you wanted. And that never bothered me. The most important thing was to make Wanda happy. Not... find some wizard, marry him, and they'd be a happy family. But just the way you wanted it. Because you wanted your grandson to be a wizard. But he's not, and get over it. Because not only will you lose Wanda, but you'll lose me and your grandson too. And you won't have anyone. Is that what you want?
Edgar looked at Anna and lowered his head.
-- But you don't understand. Don't you understand that I've always dreamed of this? For our family to survive as it has for over ten centuries. And one kid ruined it all.
-- But it's not his fault that he is the way he is. Don't you understand?
And that's when the real argument started. Anna and Edgar kept shouting at each other and nothing could be said. Until finally Clay couldn't stand it. He walked up to them and yelled:
-- Enough!
He waved his arms and some strange force pushed Anna and Edgar away from each other. They both fell to the floor. They could not believe what had just happened.
-- Ha! -- shouted Edgar gleefully. -- So it is! -- he stood up and looked at the stunned Anna. -- So, you still insisted. And what did it turn out to be? All we had to do was piss him off and we got the results.
-- Wait... what? -- asked Clay surprised.
-- I knew from the moment I saw you that you were Wanda's son. But I didn't know if your father was this... Robert. If you used magic, that means no. It hasn't happened yet that a hybrid has any magical abilities.
-- And how do you know that Clay's father is not human? -- asked Anna, rising slowly.
-- Because even if the hybrid had any magical abilities, they would still be too weak to separate us.
-- So you only meant for me to use magic, right? -- said Clay furiously.
-- Well... I admit it. But... admit it was even a good idea. At least we know you're a wizard. And that's the most important thing to me.
-- The most important thing? This? Are you kidding me?! If all you care about is your grandson being a wizard, then... -- Clay left the living room. -- I'm not up for it. Good-bye. -- He took the bag from the coat rack and left.
Anna ran after him. She went outside and shouted:
-- Clay! Clay, wait!
Clay stood up, turned to her and said:
-- Why do you think that is? I don't want to talk to you guys. Especially not with him. -- Clay pointed at Edgar, who appeared behind them.
-- Are you still angry? -- Edgar asked and came up beside Anna.
-- Angry? No. Furious. All you care about is that your grandson is a wizard. You got what you wanted. So get away from me. I regret coming here at all. I shouldn't have.
-- But why? -- Anna asked sadly.
-- It's not about you. -- said Clay to Anna. -- just about him. You destroyed everything at once. I wanted to deal with you. But you clearly don't want to. So it's no use. I'm going back to the orphanage. Good-bye. -- Clay turned and walked away.
-- Wait... the orphanage? -- Anna asked surprised. -- You live in an orphanage?
-- Yes. -- said Clay, still facing away from them. -- That's why I came to you. I wanted to get to know you. But... it was a stupid idea. -- said and walked toward the orphanage.
Anna behind a sad face led him away with her eyes.
