Chapter 4: One Day.
Five days later, I was already home.
On my way home, I noticed that the village was a little bit restless, just like the harvest season, even though it was not yet the harvest season. I went straight to tell daddy that his son had returned.
Knock, knock.
- Come in.
- Hello, Daddy.
- Oh, you're back, how was it? Were you able to talk him into it?
- Yeah, it went well, we didn't get off to a good start, but then we hit it off.
- Hmm, I'm surprised. He's hard to reason with! I tried to invite him to our village once, but he refused flatly. Did you at least say you were my son?
"Oh, shit, it slipped my mind. "I'll tell you next time I see you."
- No, Daddy, I didn't get a chance, and he didn't ask.
- Okay. How'd you get him to talk?
- I helped him with his little project, and he decided to help me out in return.
- Oh, good. Of course I won't ask what project, I wouldn't understand.
- What's all the commotion in the village?
- Oh, you mean that... All because of the great tree, it turns out that rumors about it spread all over the continent and people come to our land to see this miracle of nature. The inhabitants are preparing for the arrival of guests. The only problem is that people will see your plant and may misunderstand. So we're figuring out a way to keep them from passing your fields.
- Thank you, Daddy.
"Yes that would be good, for now I don't need the extra eyes."
Dad always tried to help me, even though he tried to look nonchalant, but I knew he felt that way about everyone in our family. That's why I respected him. A little while later, I checked on my fields. In about a couple months, we could start to harvest the first crop. I partially accelerated the growth of the lilac ivy. According to my calculations it should take about three years from planting to fruiting, but I reduced it by magic to 2 years, and that's with the fact that in my region you can harvest twice a year. To do this, I made it so that two different fields could be harvested at different times of the year. What was also handy: the lilac ivy has to bear fruit not during the main harvest, which made my job of picking berries easier.
Not far from my fields, stood a big old barrack. After some minor repairs, I decided to equip it with everything I might need for my work. I replaced old and rotted boards, whitewashed the walls, leveled the shrivelled gates and doors.
People slowly began to arrive in our village. I called them "Tourists." Some just came to admire this miracle of nature. And some even worshipped it. I called them "Pilgrims."
There were, of course, those who accidentally wandered into my fields, but most often did not even pay attention. There were still those who were frightened at the sight of this plant, but mostly it was quiet.
Tourists and pilgrims revitalized our village, people slowly began to make money from our guests. Father, along with the people, even began to build a hotel. To be precise, father was the head of the village. There were also elders, they were the ones who chose who would be the head.
Father and everyone else believes that I somehow gave a boost to the growth of the great tree, nothing more, that is to say, circumstances just happened to happen. It was a good thing that no one knew I had a huge mana reserve. As Ed the Dwarf said, I could match even the Lord of Darkness in terms of mana reserves. So less they know, more they sleep.
On my way home I met my older sister, she was taking a slow stroll. And I forgot to introduce her to you. Her name is Rine. As I know, her wedding is coming up soon and she has to leave for her husband. Like in my world, parents are always trying to pass their children off as a good match, but they never ask what their child wants. That was the lot of many girls of nobility in this world.
I feel like if my older sister had asked my father, he would have made sure the wedding never happened, but for some reason my older sister took everything for granted. All the time I have lived in this world, she has always looked up to her older brothers, studying diligently, learning the basics of etiquette. Probably because we had a small age difference, we didn't spend much time together, only at the table during meals or while studying. The rest of her time was spent studying or helping out in the village.
To be honest, she was the complete opposite of her younger sister, who was more into spending her time in the fields helping her father or coming up with some secret plans. Yeah, and she was more like her father in personality. I didn't remember my older brothers much; after they came of age, they went to the capital to study at the military academy and sent only letters home.
- Hi, Rinya," I greeted her with a wave.
- Hi, Will, - With a strained smile, she said hello to me.
- Something wrong, sis?
- Nothing, I just thought I'd take a walk. I'm going away soon, so I won't be around much.
- Are you worried about your upcoming wedding? If you're worried, just tell your father and he'll call off the engagement.
- I know my father will do anything to make me happy, but you don't have to worry about that. I've known my future husband for a long time, we used to play a lot when we were kids and we communicated a lot through letters. I know what kind of man he is and I was the first to express my desire to arrange an engagement.
As it turns out, I don't know much about my older sister.
- Then I guess you're just afraid to leave, aren't you?
- In part, yes, but I'm also very afraid of embarrassing our family. You know the wedding will be held at our house and many nobles will be invited. What if something goes wrong... What if they say that our family is a hillbilly and give me away to get into the know?
"Oh, girls, this world and my old world are the same."
- Don't worry sis, I'll make sure our family will be on everyone's lips at the wedding.
"Okay, my sister's wedding is about a year away, we need to get ready."
- Thanks for your support Will, I'll try to get ready too.
- And I'll help too," Sis Iva appeared out of nowhere.
My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. After we all promised each other to help make the wedding unforgettable, everyone went about their business.
(Rine)
My name is Rine and I am the 3rd child in my family. I have 2 older brothers and I also have a younger brother and sister. I have looked up to my older brothers since I was little. They always aspired to become military like my father. They always practiced and were diligent in their studies. I aspired to keep up with them and become a military officer, but they always said that I was a girl and should not go to the army. It's very hard for girls to become military, what to say about great warlords... There were only two women in the whole history, and one of them was a demon and a very young warlord, and also the daughter of a demon lord. After reconciliation in 3450, she disappeared on a trip to the human mainland, causing the next war to break out, which has been going on for 500 years. So I eventually resigned myself to the fact that I would not become a military officer, much less a commander of troops.
Then I met Jonas. It was childish at first, but the more we talked, the more we liked each other. Jonas was from a noble family. His father was an active military general who had once served under my father. And his mother was a woman from one of the noble families involved in trade in the capital. When I was 13 years old, Jonas asked my father for my hand in marriage. My father said he had to ask me first. Of course dad asked my opinion and I immediately agreed, so we decided to get engaged. We decided to have the wedding after Jonas had received his military education.
Time flew by, I would be 16 years old.
I started studying hard so as not to embarrass our family. I also continued to study military science to help my future husband. And so my days passed. Often, reading by the window, I watched my younger brother Will run off somewhere without asking, and I told my father about it, and he just shrugged.
Will had been on his own since he was a kid, always upset about something, reading a lot and learning the basics of magic. What I had a hard time with, he learned very easily. He was always in thought at dinner, and we talked, but very little. Most of the time our communication was reduced to a few banal phrases like: "Hi, how are you?" and "How was your day?". With him more common language found a younger sister, she always helped him and he helped her. I was even a little envious of their communication.
One of the days he went off in the direction of the forest, after which a giant tree grew the next day. After that incident, some kind of fire appeared in his eyes. He got a piece of land from his father and started spending all his free time in his fields. His younger sister also helped him with great zeal.
Today I decided to go for a walk, to think about my upcoming wedding, and to see what he was growing. When I met Will, he was surprisingly cooperative and even promised to help me. That was just a shock to me. He had never been very eager to show his feelings for me or help me in any way, but here he was supporting me and offering to help. Today I saw eagerness with enthusiasm in his eyes. He was the first of my brothers who decided to help me. I had probably been wrong about him in the past, and now I felt at peace.
