Parentheses in a story is adding an extra thought in, that the character thinks or what the narrator thinks. Yes, use them, but not too often. Constantly interrupting a story with needless thoughts gets irritating.

(word)- these are the correct types of parentheses to use in your story.m
[word]- these are called square brackets, and are only used for editing a paper.
{word}- this is called a curly bracket, and isn't used in writing a story.
