Chapter Thirteen

And then there he was, Rafe Adler. You saw the moment his eyes turned to you, because his cocky smirk dropped a little and his face became a little pained. He watched you, and you stared straight back, waiting for the pain to hit, like you'd been expecting for the long weeks on the trail of the treasure. But it never came. You felt a stab of fear and annoyance, but no pain. But then you realised why. The man beside you had been slowly healing up the hole in your heart, and you weren't broken any more, not like before.

As if Rafe could sense this too, he tilted his head a little. "Well this is interesting. Nate. Samuel... Y/N."

You just narrowed your eyes, sizing up the men at his side. You already had Nadine, but you and Nate were still unarmed against at least three guys. Knowing he was the only one in your group who could make demands, Sam yelled for them to put their guns down, but Rafe just smirked and shook his head. "No."

Nadine started reasoning with Rafe, but he just seemed somewhat amused by the idea of Sam killing someone in cold blood. But you saw the look in his eyes the same time Nate did, and both of you moved to stop him, Nate getting there first and shoving the gun away from Nadines head and pulling it off Sam while Nadine scurried back to her side. You practically hissed as she moved by you, but then Rafe yelled for his men not to fire, and for Nate to put the gun down, which he did.

You gave both brothers a look. You would have taken your chances! Now you had no shot at survival.

Rafe knew it too and didn't even look slightly worried as he strutted over to Sam, a smirk on his face. "Samuel, you okay?" He started brushing dirt from Sam's shoulders as he spoke, but your eyes were on the gun. "I guess you knew this day was coming huh?"

Before you could act, Rafe smacked Sam across the head with his gun, knocking him to the ground while you and Nate jumped to his defence. Rafe looked up at you again and chuckled.

"Y/N. Back with these two. Somehow I expected better of you," he smiled, but you just straightened your back and met his gaze, refusing to back down.

"Yeah, well I guess you never did know me that well."

You knew your words had had the desired effect when Rafes eyes widened and he turned his full attention to you, a humourless laugh leaving his lips. "I never knew you? Y/N I knew everything about you. I loved you more than anything in this world-"

"Except the treasure right?" You snapped, your hands clenching into fists.

Rafe then narrowed his eyes and took a step towards you. "I wanted to find the treasure for both of us! Have you at my side when we finally found it! That was always my dream! But you left before it could happen," he finished bluntly, gesturing to the Drake brothers with his gun, making your breath catch as you took a step forward, ready to intervene.

"It's not too late, Y/N. We can still find the treasure together! Like it's supposed to be..." He tried, but you crossed your arms and nodded to your friends.

"And them? Something tells me they don't have a place in this dream of yours."

Rafe nodded. "They've caused too much trouble for me. They're gonna die here . Nadines men are owed blood."

You laughed and moved, coming to stand in front of Rafe, both Drakes behind you. "Then I'm right where I'm meant to be... Standing between you and them... If you want to kill them, you'd better make sure the first bullet is for me, because I won't let you kill them."

You felt your challenge move through the others, and saw the cogs turning in Rafes head, but before anyone else could say anything, Nate was stepping in, trying to diffuse the situation. "C'mon now, you're a businessman, let's work out a deal..."

Rafes eyes shifted to Nate and he shrugged. "Oh a deal. What do you have in mind?" On the last word he stepped forward and kicked Sam in the face, keeping him down. Before you could punch him in the face, Rafe stepped away and gestured to Nate, who was standing over his brother, looking like he wanted to help him up but didn't dare move. "Oh you can go ahead, I'm listening."

Nate offered Sam a hand up, which he accepted, still grunting at the pain as he slowly climbed to his feet, turning away from the others to try and manage the pain. You stood in front of him, your hands gently touching his face, assessing the damage. Sam flinched but let you continue, his own hands covering yours for a second before he touched his nose gently, his hand coming away bloody from where Rafe had stomped on his face.

Nate was still negotiating with Rafe, but you were only half paying attention as you looked at Sam. "You ok?" You whispered, and he nodded once, squeezing your hand as you let it drop from his face.

Suddenly Sam's eyes closed and he sighed through his nose, looking like he was about to meet his terrible fate. "Nate..." He started, and you frowned before tuning back into the conversation, just as Rafe laughed and looked confused.

"Hector Alcazar died in a shoot out in Argentina like six months ago... I'm the one who got Samuel out."

The words hit you like a truck, and you turned back to Sam, waiting for him to tell you Rafe was lying, but he didn't deny it, and you couldn't help it as you took a step back from him. You were at a loss for words, and Rafe seemed delighted as Sam's lies collapsed around him.

"What did he tell you?" His tone turned mocking as he turned to Sam. "Sam! What kind of story did you cook up? Alcazar? Really you lied? You lied to your baby brother and the girl who's loved you since you were kids?"

Nadine jumped in, not interested in the drama unfolding before her. "We're wasting time!"

Rafe was far too interested in the story now though, and he wasn't going to stop until he'd seen the pain on the faces of Sam and his loved ones as they realised the extent of his lies. You kept your face carefully blank though, not giving them the satisfaction of seeing you lose it. But you listened as Rafe explained how Sam had really gotten out- two years ago. Two years. Those two words echoed around your skull.

If he'd been out for two years, why hadn't he come to look for you or Nate? Why let you both continue to suffer? These were the questions that you wanted to scream at Sam, but you'd zoned out, letting your anger and the pain of the betrayal act as a shield against whatever Rafe would say next. You had to keep your cool if you were gonna get out of that situation alive.

So you half listened to what was said, staring at the gun in Rafes hand. It was only when Sam spoke again that you looked up.

"You don't deserve it!"

Rafe raised an unimpressed eyebrow and gestured to the three of you. "And you do? Any of you? The legend, his thief brother, and his greatest steal," he smirked, pointing the gun at Nate, Sam, and then you, as he rattled off the list. You didn't flinch back from the gun, and nor did you let him see that it bothered you that he was talking about you like you were a possession.

Nadine got impatient again and warned Rafe to end it before she did, so Rafe shrugged and aimed his gun at Sam. "Well you heard the lady..."

Even if you were pissed at him for lying, you still moved to stop Rafe from killing Sam. Nate spoke up too, moving as close as he dared. "Hey, you miss even one clue and you can kiss that treasure goodbye! You said it yourself, you keep running into dead ends. Why don't you face it, Rafe? You need us."

Rafe narrowed his eyes and nodded a little. "Oh you're right."

You sighed in relief. Too soon. Rafe turned the gun on Nate. "Half right. I just need Sam."

Nate started bargaining as Sam pleaded for Rafe not to shoot, but Rafe had already made his mind up and pulled the trigger, but Sam was already there, jumping in the way.

The bullet caught him in the arm and he jerked back, accidently knocking Nate off the cliff and screaming his name as he reached for him. You both saw Nate's head bounce off the cliff, knocking him out before he hit the water.

Sam looked like he was going to jump after him, but Nadines men had already tackled him to the floor. Rafe was walking towards you, but you looked down at the water so far below before snarling at Rafe. "You're gonna pay for that, rich boy," using his most hated nickname before sharing a quick look with Sam. A look that promised you'd save Nate.

So before you could think about how wrong it could go, you leapt off the cliff, hearing bullets overhead before Rafes voice shouted for them to stop. After that you heard nothing as you hit the water.

The current was very strong, but you swam with it, letting it propel you towards Nate's lifeless body ahead. You'd only entered the water a few seconds after him, so you prayed he was OK as you closed the distance, managing to grab him and turn him onto his back, you practically laying underneath him as you kept his head above the water. You yelled his name, hoping to get an answer, but he didn't so much as breathe. Your back bounced off a few rocks, knocking the air from your lungs as you tried to keep Nate from any further injury, but you were exhausted from trying to keep you both afloat, and you knew you had to get out of the water soon. Luckily there was a bend approaching, and the shallows seemed tame, so you looped an arm around Nate, using his holster to make sure you didn't lose your grip, and started swimming for the shallows.

It was hard work, but you made it, and then you just had to drag Nate out of the water and onto the shore.

"Nathan? Nate? Can you hear me? Please, God, Nathan wake up!" You pleaded, putting your ear to his mouth to see if he was breathing, and panicking when you found that he wasn't.

"No Nate! You don't pull this shit now!" You snarled, pushing your wet fringe from your face and starting chest compressions, counting in your head before tilting his head back and breathing into his mouth twice.

He didn't respond, so you returned to chest compressions, vaguely aware of another voice joining yours, pleading for Nate. You risked a look up and saw Elena rushing for you, her eyes on her husband.

You practically sobbed at the expression on her face, but you didn't have time for it, so you leant down to do mouth to mouth again, but this time Nate responded, coughing up water and swearing as you and Elena turned him onto his side.

He opened his eyes, flinching at the pain somewhere in his body, but he was so covered in bruises and cuts that you could only guess as to which one was bothering him.

"Sam?" He asked, but you just shook your head.

"Rafes got him. He's alive though," you explained, putting a hand on Nate's shoulder before getting to your feet, telling him to turn around. He froze but did as you told him to, rolling over to see Elena beside him, her eyes bright with unshed tears. When Nate saw her, he relaxed a little, looking like he was about to say something, but Elena hushed him and took his hand.

"Let's get you patched up."

You watched as Nate slowly got to his feet and headed away from the water. Elena watched him for a second before turning to you and pulling you into a hug. "Thank you," she whispered, and you hugged her back, telling her that it was no problem.

When you pulled apart, you both headed over to Nate. He was watching you carefully, as if afraid that you were about to crumble and become the person you'd been before. As if you were broken again. But you shook your head at him and squatted beside him. "Not again," you promised, and you both knew that you meant it. This wasn't like before. The molten anger that filled your veins spilled over every crack and break in your soul, not meant to break and burn, but to forge. This betrayal had made you stronger, and you weren't staying down after that hit. Nate could see that too, and he inclined his head at you. You took it as permission and got to your feet again. "I'm going after them."

Nate protested, looking like he was going to get to his feet, but one look from Elena had him sitting back again. She also spoke to you as she pulled some band aids from her bag. "Let's me patch you both up and then we can make a plan," she tried, but you shook your head and gestured to the two of them.

"You two need to talk, and I'm not great at playing Dr Phil... Besides, I've got my own Drake to rescue," you sighed, continuing on your way. Nate looked like he wanted to argue, but Elena understood and called after you, handing you a gun.

"Be careful out there, Y/N. Nadines men have a reputation..."

You pointed to your bruised neck and nodded. "Believe me, I know. But it's not me you should be worrying about," you promised, and with that, you turned away and started jogging through the trees, hoping to catch up to the others before they made it to New Devon.
