Chapter Six
"Jesus it's cold!" You gasped as you stood looking over the Cathedral and it's surrounding lands, attempting to rub some warmth back into your hands.
You knew the area pretty well after having spent months at a time in its snowy country after Rafe bought the cathedral chasing down a lead. Going back brought back memories of harsh words and brutal fights, and then further pain when Nate had left, but also relief as he was in no danger from Rafe if he was far away.
Which was exactly what he wasn't anymore, but this time you weren't so worried. This time the lines weren't blurred between who's side you had to take, and if Rafe found you and made a single move towards either Drake, you'd take him down.
"Y/N, you coming?" Sam shouted up to you, he and Nate already making their way down the cliffs. Slowly you started after them, keeping an eye out for any Shoreline guys. They were around if the explosions were anything to go by, but luckily for you, they were around the Cathedral and you were a way off in the grave yard. Or you would be, once you got there.
Sully didn't want to risk getting too close so he'd landed over a mile away and you'd walked closer.
You jogged to catch up with the brothers, and heard Nate explaining what happened between Rafe and him, something you remembered well. But it was in the past now, and this time it was different. The three of you would find the treasure together and save Sam, and maybe even go back to being a family.
"Down here!" You yelled, seeing the slide you had to make and then the drop afterwards. It wasn't going to be fun, but hardly anything was when chasing treasure, so you took the lead and jumped down to the loose pebbles and skid down sideways, almost at the bottom when you jumped and caught the ledge, barely a foot later and you'd have fallen to your probable death. As you heard the others swear behind you, you couldn't help but smirk a little as you pulled myself up.
"I swear she does that on purpose..." Nate muttered as he jumped, and Sam made a noise of agreement before following him.
Nate wasn't wrong. You'd forgotten how much you loved the danger of the job, especially when all that stood between you and certain death was the strength of your own body, and the perfectly timed moves. It was a thrill few understood, and even less actually experienced.
"Come on, losers. Keep up!" You urged, tying your grappling hook around an old tree and then jumping over the edge of the cliff and carefully climbing down.
Shots fired before you were even on the ground, and you swore and ducked behind a crate with the word 'Shoreline' stamped across it. Clearly Nadine and her goons had spread out too, probably hoping to stumble across the treasure.
You started to return fire and Sam and Nate dropped down beside you, helping to take out the others quickly.
"That all of them?" You asked when Nate shot the final guy. The three of you paused for a second, waiting for anyone else to show up, but it seemed you were ok for the time being, so you tried to calm your racing heart and stood up. Your gun was still in your hand, but it appeared you were good, so you started forward slowly, ready should anything happen, but nothing did, and after a couple of moments, the three of you found some ruins and headed down.
Sam and Nate continued their earlier conversation while you led the way down, seeing where you had to go, but when you tried the door it was locked. Sighing, you took a step back and looked up at the building, hearing the brothers behind you.
"One of you two give me a boost? I'll find a way to..."
"I've got a better idea!" Nate called, so you turned around and saw the grin on his face before looking at what he held in his hands. Dynamite.
You smirked and walked closer to pick some up, Sam urging the pair of you to be careful. He clearly didn't understand how much experience you and Nate had with the stuff.
"Back up!" You ordered as you lit one of the sticks and threw it towards the door before ducking down behind a crate, your fingers in your ears and mouth open.
The other two obliged and you all heard the explosion as wood splintered off in all directions. When you got up, the door was gone and you could get inside the building. There was a hole in the roof but it was too high, even for a boost.
"Let's try moving one of those crates over here?" Nate suggested, so you followed his lead and the three of you gathered around the nearest crate and tried to lift it.
After a moment of straining and swearing, you had to give up, and you fell back with a growl. "It's too heavy. We need-" you stopped, remembering what you'd seen on the way down and set off back into the ruins to check. The other two waited for you so you called back when you saw it. "Yeah, there's one on wheels up here. Just need to get this door off," you called, lighting and throwing the dynamite before the others could even tell you to be careful.
When the door was gone, you jumped back up to the inside and started pushing the box through the door, towards the drop at the other end. The brothers came to lend a hand, and just as you got it down the drop and to the wall, you heard voices and quickly had to duck out of sight, rolling into the long grass.
"Shoreline, " You breathed and the others nodded before inching away slowly. You'd have drawn too much attention hiding together, so they moved away while you watched the mercs, counting six of them. If you were fast you could take them all down with your guns, but there was always the chance you'd attract more, so you'd have to try and sneak by them, or take them down quietly.
Knowing you'd get discovered if you didn't act quickly, you made the first move, climbing up onto the edge above your hiding spot and quickly ducking behind a wall. There was a guy at the end of it, looking down into the water. If you were fast, you could take him down before he saw you and hopefully lure some more over to your position.
Staying low, you moved quickly closer to him, your hands free from any weapons. He was just starting to turn when you were on him, jumping on his back, your arms choking him out before he could try to shout for help. A few seconds later and he was on the ground, hidden from sight while you edged around a tall box, checking the others before sinking back into the long grass, Nate close by. Another guy was heading your way, so you put your finger on your lips and whispered to Nate to be quiet. He nodded and when the guy was close enough, jumped up and got him in a choke hold, dragging him into the grass and out of sight.
"Four to go," you whispered, before daring a quick sprint to the next cover, no one looking your way still, so you managed to run even further, straight into the building you needed the crate for.
You could hear voices outside and frowned at their words. "Nadine says Rich Boy's ex missus might make an appearance with the Drake guy. A woman was spotted in Italy with them, and she's sure it's her."
One of the others chuckled and spoke up. "I hope for her sake, she's not. Apparently Nadine almost killed her last time they saw each other..."
You glared in the general direction of the voice. Nadine hadn't almost killed you. She wished she could.
"Nah man. I was there. Nadine was lucky Rafe split them up. Boss lady is a badass, but that other girl held her own pretty well. If-" he cut off with a grunt, and you rounded the corner and tackled the other guy before he could grab his gun to kill Sam, who'd taken down the guy who was talking. When they were both unconscious, you did another quick visual sweep, but you were alone.
Nate was already pushing the crate towards you, so you went over to help him, and soon enough the three of you were standing on a cliff, looking at where you needed to be. There was gonna be a lot of swinging and climbing involved, but you'd already visualised the route, so turned to the others with an evil grin before telling them to follow.
"But how..." Nate started, but you just winked at him and starting sprinting for the edge, launching yourself out into open space and hearing the shouts of alarm from behind you as you waited until the last possible second to throw your rope. It caught the branch and you swung gracefully towards the cliff side, catching a hand hold and pulling your rope free before looking back at the other two.
Sam had gone white, and Nate was frozen in place, staring at you through his hands. You laughed at their reactions, and started climbing up to the next ledge. "You two coming?" You called down, and they snapped out of it, muttering to each other before starting up after you.
Because of the height difference, the two of them managed to climb up ahead of you, and then reached back down to offer you a hand up, which you had to jump for.
"Thanks," you grinned as you were pulled up, but when you got no reply, you looked up and saw the looks you were getting from the two brothers.
"Y'know, you've really got a knack for last second saves..." Sam started, and you rolled your eyes and laughed.
"You two worry too much. It's just a bit of fun. I know what I'm doing." You insisted, though about 10 minutes later, you did the same thing and your grip slipped and you started to fall, heading for the rocks and water hundreds of feet below. You didn't even have time to scream as suddenly Sam caught your hand from where he'd been perched below. Your legs kicked in empty space as you looked down at the rocks that you'd have been splattered on if not for him.
"Yeah I know, you know what you're doing..." Sam teased, and you squeezed his arm to tell him to shut up. "I'll swing you over that wood stuff. You ready?" He asked and you nodded and swung with him as he got you closer and closer to the wood you had to get over.
He let go and you flew over, landing hard on the slide on the other side, the gravel digging into your hands as you slid, seeing the drop ahead and the cliffs on the other side. Jumping, you cleared the space and slammed into the ground on the other side, rolling to take the impact.
You heard Nate behind you and looked in time to see him jump, not clearing it as you had, and instead he caught himself on a lower ledge. You were about to give him a hand up when it started to crumble and he fell.
"Nate!" You yelled, your eyes wide as you were powerless to do anything. Sam blocked your view for a moment as he landed, but you grabbed his arm and pulled him up before he could fall too.
"Nathan!?" He yelled, and beneath the sounds of the waves below, you heard a quiet answer and relaxed, your heart still thudding hard in your chest. Sam chuckled and offered you a hand to your feet, which you took and then followed him to a wooden bridge that looked about a day older than God.
"You've got a real talent for breaking things..." Sam started as he walked across the bridge, interrupted by a groan and then sudden crack as the bridge gave way beneath him. Sprinting for the opposite side, Sam landed in a heap as he barely cleared the edge.
"Looks like it runs in the family!" You laughed, Nate sniggering below.
Sam stood and dusted himself off, a smile gracing his lips as he looked up at you.
"Maybe..."
Smirking, you looked at the gap between you and him, knowing it was too far to jump. You were just about to demand how you were supposed to get across now, when Sam stood and held his hand out.
"Jump! I'll catch you on this side," he offered.
You looked at his outstretched hand and felt your stomach knot. If he missed...
"Y/N..." You looked back up and met his eyes, seeing the soft look there. "I won't miss," he promised softly, reading your mind.
Sighing, you nodded once and took a deep breath as you walked back a few steps, gauging the distance between you and Sam's hand. Before you could chicken out, you ran forward, throwing yourself over the gap and into Sam's waiting arms, clearing the distance with no assistance, and knocking Sam back a few steps. Still he didn't let go of you for a few seconds, and you inhaled his coffee and cigarette smoke scent, letting it fill your frozen nose.
"See? You didn't even need me," he whispered, his hands moving to your waist. Suddenly you were reminded of the last time the two of you had stood so close, and heat flooded your blood, so you took a step back, avoiding Sam's eyes and hoped your already cold bitten cheeks would disguise your blush.
You ran into a few more Shoreliners, and had to do a lot more climbing, but eventually you made it to the graveyard and quickly found the grave of one Benjamin Bridgeman, which opened to reveal an entrance to a crypt and then some catacombs.
A shudder ran through you as you entered the freezing cold space, your hands in fists at your side to stop you from reaching for your gun. Not that you were a believer as such, in the paranormal, but you'd seen some things on your adventures that had you on edge when entering any old, creepy place.
In fact, it had taken you a long while to sleep with the lights off after your last adventure with Nate, during which time you'd found yourself hunted by Nazi experiments that still plagued your nightmares. You wondered if Nate had the same issue. Either way, if he noticed how close you were standing to him, he didn't comment on it.
"Why would he hide treasure down here?" Sam asked, but you shook your head.
"He wouldn't. Something tells me that we're about to start the real treasure hunt," You sighed.
You were right, and after solving a puzzle, the three of you were off again. Or would have been, except Nadines men were swarming the grave yard when you surfaced.
"Don't these assholes have something better to be doing than hunting us down?" You groaned, loading your pistol and counting the mercs. "There's too many of them to try and sneak by. We're gonna have to shoot our way out of this one, boys."
They nodded gravely, and carefully you each took up positions, ready for when the fighting started.
Luckily it didn't take long, and making use of dynamite, the three of you walked away unscathed from the fight and continued towards the cave, attempting to avoid any more run ins with Shoreline.
Your luck mostly held, and before long, the three of you were at the final test, discovering the next clue on your way to Averys treasure.
"King's bay?! Really?" You started, about to start ranting when suddenly the wall beside you blew up and the three of you were sent flying. You hit the ground hard, knowing you were gonna have bruises. Pushing yourself up onto your hands and knees, you spat dirt."Sonofa-"
"Ah ah. How about we keep this conversation PG rated?"
Your hands closed onto fists as you tensed up, knowing that voice and who it belonged to. Sure enough, you turned around slowly, and there she was. Nadine Ross, standing over the three of you, the light above her making it look like she had a halo. Ironic really. Her presence alone made your blood boil, but you swallowed your anger upon seeing the numerous guns in your face.
"You three are very noisy," she smirked, backing up to allow the three of you to stand, which you did slowly, your eyes never leaving her.
She exchanged a few words with the brothers, both of whom casually stepped closer to each other, blocking your path to Nadine. She took her walkie out and spoke into it, saying the only thing that could make the situation worse. "Rafe... Rafe, come in."
You felt your stomach knot as you waited, hoping he wouldn't reply, but then... "I'm at the graveyard. Nadine, they were here."
God that voice. The same one that had once whispered such sweet things in your ears, uttered from the mouth that had kissed every inch of your skin and curled into a smile when you entered a room. You hadn't heard it in a long while, and hearing it again was like being kicked in the chest. This treasure had separated you. It had caused such an obsession in him that the smiles had faded and the "I love you"s had turned to ashes in your mouth. Yet you were both back in the same place, returning players to an unfinished game.
Nadine smirked as she paced, answering him with a cocky edge to her tone. "Yeah, I'm looking at them right now. And your little girlfriend..." She smirked, casting you a look that you glowered at.
There was a long pause on Rafes end, but then static as he pressed the button but didn't say anything.
"Y/N? Where?" He asked quietly, a new tone entering his voice, something like regret and pain. That only made Nadine smirk more and confirm it before holding the walkie out to you.
"Want to say hi?" She asked, laughing as you bared your teeth at her and made to swat the walkie from her hand. "Pity," she drawled before addressing Rafe again. "Come back to the cathedral. Follow the holes."
Rafe answered quietly. "I'm on my way. For gods sake don't shoot them yet!"
Nadine chuckled. "Might want to hurry then," she smirked before turning the radio off.
Turning back to you, she smiled, and waved the walkie. "Don't want to say anything to your lover? Funny as he's been trying so hard to talk to you for so long. You really struck him a blow when you left, but don't worry, I've been very good to him since you've been gone," she grinned suggestively, wanting to get a rise out of you, but you narrowed your eyes, knowing she was lying, but not particularly caring either way.
"You're welcome to each other. Don't flatter yourself by thinking you're anything special. You always were second best to me," you taunted, knowing you'd get more of a reaction from her than she would from you. And you were right. Marching forward, Nadine punched you in the stomach, hard enough that you dropped to your knees and gasped for air. You'd forgotten how hard she hit. Still, you knew that you'd won, even if you were on the floor. You'd gotten under her skin.
Sam and Nate had jumped forward to intervene, but Nadines men raised their weapons in warning and they stopped.
Nadine ignored them and sneered at you. "If I'm second best, why is it that you are always the one on the ground?"
You sucked in some air and smirked. "Well I made it to the cross first, and you're deluded if you think I'm letting you walk away with it."
Nadine looked towards the cross and did as you expected, sending someone to go get it. Sam and Nate knew what you'd done, leading her to the wrong choice, and took a few steps back, drawing the attention of Nadine, who's eyes widened as she realised she'd been played.
"Don't touch that-!" She yelled, turning away from you, but it was too late and the ground crumbled beneath you.
