Hidden Shadows- part three

I quickly learned that traveling on my own would be harder than I thought, especially in the beginning of winter with virtually no funding and no place to run to. I thought for a moment to see if I could reach my Aunt Vivian, but she lived about two hundred fifty miles away. Unless I could learn how to mindlessly move myself, it would take a while to get there.

I walked along in the thin layer of snow, my walking almost inaudible. I passed many buildings without even realizing it, and before I knew it I was halfway across town. It was beginning to get dark, and I knew walking wouldn't get me far enough. So I ran.

I ran to the edge of town, only to stumble upon something I had never seen before. It was a cemetery. Was I hallucinating? There's never been a cemetery here before... let alone a full graveyard, filled with fog, darkness and an unsettling eeriness you get from listening to dark piano music, or watching the suspense in horror movies- not the actual jump scares. Everything seemed a bit off. I probably was hallucinating, so I decided since I had never seen it before in my life, it didn't exist.

I walked through it. Nothing happened, but it seemed to go on forever. Was my imagination playing tricks on me? I wouldn't be surprised. I saw a long shadow. I figured the moon was shining on me, until I looked up and suddenly the moon was covered up, like a bride's face before the ceremony, only this time the veil was black instead of white. If white represents purity and all good things, then this bride of the night dressed in black must represent a twisted darkness, an unsettling evil that shakes you until you go insane. And here I was, feeling as if I was going insane, so it must be working.

It was quiet around me. Not the normal quiet of the evening sky, where everything prepares to momentarily die for the night, but absolute silence. No birds chirped or crowed, no crickets sang, not even my feet in the dusting of snow and ash made noise. I couldn't even hear myself breathe. It was as if I were underwater, or another substance, that almost completely blocked out my senses. I felt helpless walking along, I felt I couldn't do a single thing but move my legs, as if in an orderly fashion.

I had one goal in mind at this point in time, I wanted to reach the last point of this seemingly endless graveyard. All of a sudden, a church bell rang loud and clear. The ding of the bell to tell the time scared me, as if every noise was a reminder of something. It was horrible. It rang eight times. Eight o'clock at night, and already almost pitch black. I looked up, but all I could see was the slim outline of the moon and a foggy blur. I slowly crept towards the blur; I realized it was some sort of cathedral. It looked friendly enough, considering I was in the middle of a cemetery. I moved closer.

The doors were tall and intimidating. I reached out for the knocker, but the door flew open with a stereotypical horror movie style creak. Of course it did. I stepped inside, like the idiot girl who wears some sort of bikini, who thinks walking down a dark place isn't going to get you killed. I didn't walk slowly. I quickened my pace, until a figure came upon me, fully stopping my movement.

The figure was in a shiny black cloak, like some sort of cult member. It came towards me, and I realized it was not a cloak, but more of a cape. I moved closer to it, trying to get a better look, before a pale hand removed the hood, and the most shining, handsome creature I've ever seen looked me in the eyes. And then, it spoke. A deep, yet not too deep voice with a richness to it, a beauty only achievable by some.

"How did you find this place?"

"I walked through the cemetery?" I asked, confused. My age was showing a little bit though, as you could hear the lack of matureness in my voice. Sure, it had deepened a bit, but not like this creature.

"What are you?" The creature poked a long, smooth finger into my ribs.

"What am I?" I was even more confused.

"Are you a werewolf? Are you a warlock? Tell me."

"I'm... a human?" Seriously, this was confusing.

"You cannot be. Mortals are not allowed beyond the barrier."

Barrier? What in the heck?

"What barrier?"

"The barrier that- oh for God's sake. Tell me child, do you know what I am?"

"I would venture to guess not a human?"

"Correct. I am a vampire."

Well, that would explain the coffin where the platform should be.

"Interesting."

"You seem unsurprised." The vampire looked at me quizzically, his blood red eyes seeming to stare into my soul.

"I mean, you're pale, handsome, you have red eyes, you live in this place, in the dark, and you're wearing a cape. I mean come on? Who wears capes anymore?"

"Are you implying capes aren't in modern day fashion anymore?"

"That's exactly what I'm implying."

"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Capes have always been in style." He gave a little spin, and the scalloped edges of his cape lifted up and looked vaguely like a pair of bat wings. Almost.

"Hate to break it to you, but capes went out of style after too many superheroes died," I said sarcastically.

"Superheroes? Lies. They never cared."

This was the point where I began to think one of us was crazy. It couldn't be me, obviously, so he was clinically insane. I think. But who's to say I wasn't in some sort of killing-induced coma, and it was my imagination?

Well, I don't know.

Yet.
