forty eight
"This is so official!" Ashlyn beamed with excitement. "There's a sign on the door. What do we do? Do we knock? Do we make a grand entrance? Like what do they do in Hollywood?"
That caused the group to slowly turn towards Soul.
"Seriously guys." Soul questioned, shaking her head. "I've never even been to Hollywood."
"You guys, we're actually rehearsing for High School Musical 4." Gina bursted, causing the group to squeal in excitement.
"Hollywood? More like Holly-will." Ricky joked, causing the group to give him a unsure look. "Sorry, guys. I'm really excited."
"My college applications are gonna love this." Kourtney spoke with glee. "Kourtney Greene, scholar, philanthropist, Hollywood actress!"
"Obviously my bone structure was built for the big screen, but is anyone concerned we have auditions for Miss Jenn in an hour?" Carlos questioned.
"Nope. That's when this rehearsal ends." Ricky informed the boy. "So we'll be warmed up, ready to go and in Wildcat mode."
"Feature background?" A woman asked, rushing out the door of the auditorium.
"Yes!"
"You're late. Why didn't you knock?" The woman asked.
"Funny story..." Ashlyn started but was quickly cut off.
"Time is money." The woman spoke with no care before walking back into the auditorium.
That caused the group to share a look before they rushed in after the group.
"Where's G and Ricky?" Carlos questioned, noticing the pair missing.
"I'll grab them." Soul said, jogging back to the door, peeking her head out the door, causing the pair to quickly turn to look at the girl. "Hey lovebirds, are you coming in?"
"You told her about us?" Ricky asked, looking over at Gina, causing her to give him an awkward smile.
"Of course she did Richard. I'm her best friend." Soul explained. "I know everything."
"Everything?" Ricky asked, looking back at Gina, causing the girl's eyes to go wide.
"Soul!" Gina exclaimed.
"Yeah, what's that Carlos? I'm just gonna..." Soul said, pointing behind herself before she quickly closed the door, making her way back to the stage as the couple entered not even 5 seconds later.
"So, you're excused from classes this afternoon. My name is Krystal and I'm the choreographer for this movie." Krystal introduced herself as her assistant passed out numbers. "I've got two hours to teach you this dance combination."
"We thought this was just an hour 'cause we really need this theater." Ricky informed the choreographer.
"That's what I was talking about." Carlos spoke.
"Ah! First rule of being an extra." Krystal said, stopping the pair. "No questions or talking unless it's an emergency. We shoot this in a couple of weeks. Confidentially, this is the big high school reunion song, headlined by Mo, Lucas, and Corbin."
"I love how everyone keeps calling Monique 'Mo.'" Ashlyn spoke. "I'm sorry I talked."
"Krystal, I'd like to use an emergency question." Ricky said, raising his hand. "If we theoretically had an audition here for our school musical in an hour..."
"Then theoretically, the director would laugh that you think a school musical is more important than her film." Krystal answered.
"Right, but..." Ricky started but was cut off.
"We're honored to be here, Krystal." Gina spoke up, causing the choreographer to nod.
"So, here we go. A five, six, seven, eight." Krystal counted, turning her back towards the group. "Step, step, jump, clap, kick, cross... again, step, step, jump, clap, kick, cross. That connects with left grapevine and a back turn and hip. Now, I know I taught that fast..."
"And a five, six, seven, eight." Soul and Gina called together, causing the group to move as a unit. "Step, step, jump, clap, kick, cross... again, step, step, jump, clap, kick, cross. That connects with left grapevine and a back turn and hip."
"Um, okay. Where did you guys come from?" Krystal asked, impressed.
"Miss Jenn's drama class." Ricky blurted, raising his hand once again, causing Soul to chuckle at the boy.
"If I may." A new voice boomed through the auditorium as a woman emerged from behind the curtain. "I'm Quinn Robbins. I'm the director of this film. Some of you may know me from my Sundance runner-up movie about the global recession of 2007 entitled Where Has All The Money Gone?"
"Wonderful film." Ashlyn spoke, clapping her hands.
"Thank you." Quinn sends the redhead a small smile before turning her attention towards Ricky. "To the feature Background boy who just spoke, I don't know what a Miss Jenn is, but I do know what a Miss Darbus is because I spent last night in Salt Lake City corporate housing drinking $13 water bottles and watching the High School Musical trilogy."
"Had you not seen them before?" Emmy questioned.
"I wanted to be fresh when pitching the High School Musical 4 movie, so, no, I hadn't technically 'seen' the original films." Quinn admits.
"So she hadn't seen them?" Carlos questioned in disbelief.
"I would assume not." Soul looked back at the back.
"Quinn, these kids are unbelievably quick. I'll be done teaching them the combination in five minutes." Krystal spoke in disbelief.
"Okay, great." Quinn spoke with no emotion. "Let's just see if we can get Mack and Dani on set early."
Where are the PAs? Do we have enough PAs?"
"Hey, um, I'm actually here early." Mack jogged up the stairs from the seats.
"You weren't called for two more hours." Krystal informed the boy.
"Yeah, but, whenever I'm first on the call sheet, I like to hang out on set, just in case somebody needs me." Mack explained. "A pretty famous actor taught me that... It was Neil Patrick Harris."
"Wow!"
"This guy." Ricky sarcastically said, causing Gina and Soul to look back at the boy.
"Be nice." Gina said, giving the boy a look before looking back to the front.
"Yeah, Ricky, be nice." Soul teased the boy, causing him to send her a sarcastic smile, making her shake her head as she turned her attention back to the front.
"Mac, feel free to hang on the side. I'm gonna finish teaching the featured backgrounds this choreography, and then we'll add you and Dani." Krystal explained, causing the boy to give her a thumbs up.
"Just an FYI, it might be a minute. Dani just posted that her corporate apartment doesn't have steam showers." Kourtney announced. "Horrific, I know. So she asked her followers to help pick which hotel to stay at."
"Dani's lucky she's being housed." Quinn scoffed. "When I shot Where Has All The Money Gone?, I spent 18 days on a friend's couch in Bushwick. The couch got bed bugs. It caused a breakout on set. That was a movie."
"Miss Quinn, did your movie win any Oscars?" Emmy asked, causing Quinn to give the young girl a look before she turned and whispered to Krystal before she stormed away.
"I'm sorry my dear, but you've been let go from the project." Krystal announced, causing the group to gasp.
"What?"
"If it makes you feel any better, Quinn is famous for firing at least one actor per week on her films." Krystal informed the girl with a big smile.
"Thank you, but it does not make me feel better." Emmy sadly spoke, walking towards the door.
"Don't worry Em. I'm sure there will be other opportunities for you." Soul said, sending the girl a small smile.
"Besides, We've still got the school musical, Emmy." Ricky reminded the girl. "Turn that frown upside down."
"Tell my story."
"Sorry."
"We love you, Emmy."
"We'll miss you." The group bid the girl goodbye.
"Thoughts and prayers, love." Kourtney waved to the girl, holding her phone up.
...
It had officially been over an hour and the group was late to Miss Jenn's auditions.
They group was lounging around the side stage as they watched Krystal teach Mack to dance steps to the dance she just taught them.
Soul was sitting on the ground beside Kourtney texting Jamie about the album when a brunette popping up from behind one of the props caught her eye.
She looked over at Kourtney to see her already looking at her, causing them to both to quickly stand as they made their way towards them with Ricky right behind them.
"Hey, fellow teen extras." Miss Jenn exclaimed, before turning to the trio, whispering. "It's me, Miss Jenn."
"Yeah, we can kinda see that." Soul said, slowly nodding her head.
"Miss Jenn, are you okay?" Kourtney asked.
"This is crazy." Ricky muttered.
"Quinn stole the auditorium from us, as you can see. So, I wanted to spread the word that we're doing auditions in the rehearsal room now." Miss Jenn explained. "So, come quick."
"For sure. It's just - The rehearsal's running a little longer than we thought it would." Ricky explained.
"Like, all afternoon now." Soul added, causing the drama teacher to gasp, making the girl nod. "Yeah."
"But don't worry. I think I can sneak everyone out, one at a time, without the director even knowing." Ricky explained.
"Well, we need all the bodies we can get. We're barely filling out the cast as it is." Miss Jenn warned. "Apparently most of the school signed up to be extras in the movie."
"About that..." Kourtney dragged out, causing the group to quickly look over at her.
"Kourtney, don't tell me you're second-guessing the musical." Miss Jenn asked, in disbelief.
"I-I might be too busy." Kourtney stuttered out, looking around at the trio. "I'm applying to all the Ivy's, my laptop might explode. It's a lot, y'all."
"Come on, Kourt. It's our senior year." Soul begged the girl with a sad smile. "This is one of our last chances to do this thing together as a family."
Kourtney looked off to the side contemplating her decision.
"See you in the rehearsal room?" Ricky said, looking over at Miss Jenn.
"Sadly, yes. Hollywood is unfair and devastating." Miss Jenn nodded before turning and making her way out the door.
"See, I keep saying that!"
Soul shook her head making her way toward Gina and Ashlyn who were off to the side talking.
"Did you tell Ashlyn about me and Ricky?" Gina panicked, shaking the girl.
"No, I did not tell Ashlyn about you and Ricky, but I think you just told Ashlyn about you and Ricky." Soul chuckled, causing Gina to turn back to the smiling redhead before she looked back down at her phone.
"Ash, please don't tell anyone." Gina begged, causing the girl to look up from her phone.
"I won't." Ashlyn promised. "Duh. It's Maddox, we're texting about something else. Everything else, actually."
"Also audition update, we're having it in the rehearsal room now and we'll have to sneak out one at a time so the mean director doesn't fire us all." Soul informed the duo.
"Got it." Gina and Ashlyn said together.
"Okay, everyone's good with my plan." Ricky said, popping his head between Gina and Ashlyn.
"Excuse me, Featured Background number seven?" Krystal called, waving her hand as she approached the group.
That caused everyone to check their numbers as Gina looked back confused.
"I think she's talking to you, G." Ricky pointed at the Porter girl's sticker, causing her to quickly look at her shirt before looking up at the choreographer.
"Can you stand in for Dani for a moment?" Krystal asked, pointing back at Mack.
"Of course she can." Soul said, nudging her forward a bit.
"I would be honored." Gina agreed, nodding her head before quickly following after the choreographer.
Sixteen, sixteen
Sixteen minutes left, better get it done
Soul and Ricky shared a look before nodding.
"Carlos, go!" Ricky whispered back to the boy, flustering him.
"The rehearsal room, now!" Soul whisper-yelled, causing the boy to quickly grab his bag before he raced out the door.

"Featured Background Number Five." Krystal called, causing Soul to quickly look up. "Can you run the dance with Mack, while your friend is in what I assume is the bathroom?"
"Uh, sure." Soul said, looking around, noticing no Gina meaning she was the one audition, sending Krystal a small smile before making her way towards Mack. "Hi."
"Hey." Mack said, grabbing the girl's hand, lightly before pulling her towards him. "I'm Mack but I assumed you already knew that."
"I assumed after the 5th time Krystal called you that." Soul sarcastically spoke, causing the boy to chuckle.
"Cute and funny." Mack said, smiling at the girl. "Do you have a name or is it just Featured Background Number Five?"
"Yeah, it's 'I'm happily taken'." Soul said, smiling at the boy before she spun away from him as they moved nsync.
The pair stopped with their foreheads touching as Soul's hand was placed against the boy's chest.
Soul didn't realize the others had joined in the background.
"Yes! Featured Background kids, great job today." Krystal clapped her hands, causing Soul to turn to her with a grin. "You are released. Mack, Gina and Number Five stand by."
Gina and Soul shared a look before following Krystal with Mack.
On the other side of the stage Dani quickly stopped Ricky.
"Ricky, right?" Dani asked, causing the boy to quickly stop. "Who's that girl dancing with my boyfriend and why does she look so familiar?"
"Her? Or Her?" Ricky asked, pointing at both Gina and Soul.
"The shorter one." Dani quickly answered.
"That would be Featured Background Number Five with her best friend Featured Background Number Seven." Ricky jokingly said, causing Dani to fake chuckle.
"Uh-huh." Dani said, crossing her arms. "Well they're looking very foreground to me."
"What was that, Ash?" Ricky said, pretending as if he heard Ashlyn calling for him. "So sorry, I'll be right back."
Gina and Soul happily walked side by side as they made their way back to their friends.
"Hey, there." Quinn spoke, causing both girls to quickly stop.
"Hi, there, to you as well, too." Gina greeted as Soul sent the woman a smile.
"The next time my leading lady is late for dance rehearsal, do me a favor and try not to take her place." Quinn said, causing the duo to share a look. "Hollywood 101?"
"Totally." Soul said, sending the woman a fake smile as she walked away.
"No, I'm sorry, I didn't... Uh..." Gina called after the woman but she ignored the girl.
"Well, today was unexpected." Mack said, causing the girls to look over at the boy.
"Almost as unexpected as being followed by you on Instagram." Gina spoke, causing Mack to glance over at Soul.
"Don't worry. I'm her best friend, she tells me everything." Soul said, crossing her arms.
"Noted." Mack nodded, turning his attention to Gina. "And was it that obvious? Should've used my burner account. Look, I'm used to fans chasing after me. I'm not used to them standing up to me. I was impressed."
"Is this an apology?" Gina questioned.
"Depends. Is it working?" Mack asked.
"Ahem!" Dani cleared her throat, gaining the trio's attention just as Soul's phone began to ring.
"Sorry. I gotta take this, it's my manager." Soul said, touching Gina's arm, causing the girl to nod before the Walker girl turned to walk away. "Hey, what's up?"
"Manager? Why does she need a manager?" Dani asked, but before Gina could answer Dani turned to Mack. "It doesn't matter. Mack, baby, can I have a word?"
"Yeah." Mack nodded, giving Gina a quick glance before he walked away with Dani.
Dani looked over her shoulder giving Gina and Soul a look before she turned and walked away with Mack.
"She finally leave?" Soul said, appearing beside Gina, causing her to quickly look at the girl beside her.
"I thought you said you had a call from your manager?" Gina questioned, pointing toward the direction she was just standing not even a minute ago.
"Oh, no. My mom would never call me during school hours unless it was an emergency." Soul shook her head, causing Gina to slowly nod. "I saw the crazy girlfriend coming and did not want to be part of that. Sorry."
"Wait, then who was that who called?" Gina asked, confused.
"I don't know. It was a random number." Soul said, shrugging her shoulders, causing them both to chuckle as they made their way out of the auditorium.
...
Soul made her way down the hallway when she noticed a sad Carlos laying on Ash's leg.
"I think i've seen this movie before." Soul said, taking a seat beside Ashlyn, looking over at Carlos. "What's wrong, Los?"
"Seb is still avoiding me like the plague." Carlos said, causing Ash and Soul to share a look before looking back at the sad boy.
"Well I think you should just find Seb and talk to him." Ashlyn spoke, causing Soul to nod.
"Ash is right. You guys need to talk through whatever is going on." Soul softly spoke.
"Or I could plan an elaborate flash mob as a gesture of goodwill?" Carlos suggested, causing the girl's to hesitatingly nod. "I hear those are coming back."
"That can be an option, sure." Ashlyn spoke, rubbing the boy's arm.
"Carlos, Ashlyn, Soul." Miss Jenn spoke, making her way down the hallway, causing the group to quickly stand up. "Great job at auditions today. I know it was a bit non-traditional. Anyway, I sure could use some help posting the cast list."
"Miss Jenn, I have an audition day gift for you." Carlos cleared his throat, causing Emmy to make her way around the corner.
"Has she just been standing there this whole time?" Soul whispered leaning towards Ashlyn, causing the girl to shrug.
"Emmy is your new assistant. Frankly, I've been a little overwhelmed with relationship drama and the movie and it's too much for me this semester." Carlos explained.
"Thank you, Mr. Carlos. Miss Jenn, it is an honor, I will be at your beck and call 24/7 and I am excellent at acquiring sensitive information." Emmy babbled.
"How sensitive are we talking?" Soul questioned, raising her eyebrow, causing the young girl to smile.
"Carlos, you shouldn't have." Miss Jenn smiled, causing Carlos and Emmy to share a grin.
"No, really how sensitive?" Soul asked.
