When Katsuki woke, his phone was pinging with texts. He groaned and grabbed the device, scoffing as he saw it was just the 'baku-squad' group chat.
They, of course, wanted to meet for breakfast before everyone's classes started.
It's seven thirty, so Katsuki should get up anyway. He'll make one of the extras pay for his coffee.
~
Katsuki shrugged off his jacket as he approached the loud, obnoxious booth in the coffee shop. He's been long-accustomed to the bunch, no longer annoyed by their antics and their shouts.
All four were much more high-energy and friendly than Katsuki is. He's not quite sure how they started hanging out or why he even likes these morons, but he'd kill anyone that'd take away even one of their smiles.
"He's here!"
"Finally! You didn't respond in the chat, so we weren't sure you were coming!" Denki, the definitely ADHD, dyslexic, hyperactive blond, scooted over and patted the spot beside him. His grin only widened as the older sat beside him. "We ordered a black coffee for you already."
Katsuki nodded, jacket hanging over his arm. "Black coffee sounds fucking great."
"It's all you ever get," Mina mused, chin in her palm. Her curly pink hair framed her face and Katsuki noticed she changed her typical pink nail color to turquoise and yellow. Bracelets layered her wrists and rings decorated her fingers, but her make-up was far more subtle today than it normally was.
Eijirou sat beside her, leaned back with his arms draped over the back of the booth. He had his trademark, toothy grin, hair up in its typical spikes. He wore his favorite jacket, a letterman, and Katsuki almost rolled his eyes. It was going to get hot soon. "Did you eat anything today? I don't mind getting you something."
Katsuki shrugged, slouching back and folding his arms. "I had an apple on the way here."
"How ironic," Hanta mused from his spot, smushed between Denki and the wall. He's definitely the quietest of the four, and dressed the simplest. Plain white and yellow tee with black ripped jeans and white vans, yellow beanie pulled over his raven hair. "The soon-to-be doctor, eating an apple."
"Shut the fuck up," Katsuki muttered, grumbling a 'thank you' as his coffee was set in front of him with the others.
"Oh, damn," Eijirou sighed with a broad hand gesture towards the televsion hanging high in a corner of the coffee shop. "I thought they said they had a handle on that?"
Katsuki looked over his shoulder to the television. "What? The sickness?"
Denki perked up and twisted too quick onto his knees, bumping Katsuki and accidentally kicking Hanta. "Shit! They said that everyone that had it got locked up! It couldn't have spread so- holy shit! Two hundred cases in our area that they know of!?"
"Keep it down, dunce face," Katsuki muttered, but was too focused on the news to put any aggressiveness in his tone.
Roughly a dozen sick people were dragging themselves through an emptied street. Their attention was drawn up as police cars pulled in front of them.
Katsuki swallowed thickly, not enjoying the cold pit in his stomach.
The officers got out of their cars, guns pointed. Katsuki could see them shouting, but couldn't hear due to the cameraman and news anchor speaking.
The sick stumbled slightly faster, reaching their deathly pale hands out.
A sudden screech startled the group, as well as the other customers and employees in the café. For a second, they had all thought the screech was from within the café. That was until someone - something - hauled into view on the television and launched itself at an officer, screeching the whole while.
Everyone in the café went dead silent as the watched the screen, cameraman panicing as the officer was torn apart - teeth in throat, fingers shredding through chest and stomach.
The other officers shot, but despite the new wounds, the beast didn't give up. Instead, it howled and launched into the next officer, jaws snapping closed on his face.
The sick had quickly overcome the officers as they'd been distracted by the far more violent sick, and the footage cut out.
Promtply, the screen cut to the silent news anchors, faces pale in horror of the sight they'd witnessed.
A paper was set on the counter before them, the blond man clearing his throat as he looked to it. "The... Police are instructing us to... Stay inside... Do not venture out of your homes unless it is emergent... And if you see a sick, call the police and evacuate. Get into the nearest building. This disease is spreading faster than expected and the CDC is working it's hardest and fastest to figure out the cause as well as the cure... Until then... Be... Be safe..."
Still, the café was deathly quiet, all eyes widened in shock.
"Holy shit," Denki breathed. Katsuki could feel the other blond shaking against his back.
Katsuki licked his lips and stood slowly. "Let's get to school... That was on the other side of the city, so... We should be fine..."
His friends nodded, slowly gaining their bearings and following him out of their favorite café.
He tried erasing the image of the officer being torn apart from his mind. The police and CDC will take care of this. If it gets to it, the military will help.
Hopefully, though... This doesn't escalate that far...

But lunch, the incident was forgotten. He met up with Eijirou and Denki for lunch outside in their usual spot - on a stone bench facing a fountain and surrounded by neatly trimmed bushes.
Eijirou still had on his letterman - moron.
"You're gonna fuckin' overheat. Why are you still wearing it?"
The redhead pouted, cheeks rounded with his sandwich. "It looks manly," was his muffled response.
Denki snickered, facing them as he sat on the arm of the bench. "Always worried about how manly he looks. Go figure- hey! Did you get the quiz from Mr. Shield? I didn't understand it at all."
"Dude, I don't know why you're asking me. I probably did just as bad," Eijirou sighed, rubbing his neck.
Katsuki rolled his eyes, biting into his own sandwich. "You are both such idiots. I don't know why I associate myself with you."
However, instead of being offended - like normal people - these two just laughed, Eijirou daring to pat Katsuki's shoulder as Denki nearly fell backwards into a potted tree behind him.
"Come on, you love us," Eijirou sang as he leaned closer.
Katsuki groaned and rolled his eyes, pausing as he spotted someone.
No one familiar. They didn't even really stand out for any reason, other than they were shaking and standing still as everyone around walked, talked, or sat in the grass or on a bench, eating their lunch or studying. Katsuki watched closely, eyes widening slightly as he noticed how milky their eyes were, how pale their skin was on their hands and face, and the blood staining the collar of their white dress shirt underneath their dark vest.
They raised their head slowly and he stood quickly, startling his friends.
A shrill screech ripped through the air, blood curling and echoing through the courtyard. The scream was unlike any he's every heard, clenching his gut tightly with piercing, frozen fear. It was louder, sharper than the one from the news that morning.
The scream lasted just three seconds. Three seconds too long, but enough to silence the entire courtyard.
Katsuki held his breath, waiting. Something's going to happen. Something bad. This isn't good. That sounded like... Like a call. A beacon.
"Hey..?"
He nearly jumped, gaze snapping to a student who was so stupidly approaching the other.
"Are you... Are you okay-" the student gasped as he was grabbed harshly, the other students nearby gasping, a few screaming as the sick bit into his neck, flesh ripping and tearing.
Katsuki just might throw up. Look away. Look away.
The sick screeched again, sound gurgled by blood.
This time, there was a response. A quieter one. It sounded closer to the one from the television.
Sure enough, two figures, bloodied and one with a twisted, unnatural arm, crashed right into the metal fence, snarling and scrambling to get through.
Students scrambled and screamed, another sick banging against another part of the fence.
Slower sick stumbled into view, one inside the fence. A second inside the fence.
One of the faster figured out how to climb.
Katsuki stood frozen, watching as fellow students were grabbed, screaming and wailing for friends as they're bit into. One of the faster bounded on all fours, launching at a running student and sinking its teeth into her back.
"K-Katsuki," Denki gasped behind him, grabbing the back of his shirt.
Slowly, he looked over his shoulder to his friends. "Run..."
And run they did. Eijirou shoved off the bench and bolted, Katsuki and Denki right behind him. They bolted for the doors, and Katsuki spared a glance around. His eyes widened and he skidded to a stop, grabbing Denki. "Eijirou! Eijirou, not that way!"
Without missing a beat, Eijirou spun on his heal and bolted a different a direction. Before a familiar student could close the door, one of the fasr ones lunched into it, pinning him to the ground.
Katsuki grir his teeth, running hard as he tried ro drown out the screaming. He weaved through fellow panicking students, eyes on bright red hair as they pushed through.
"Eij! Katsuki! Here!"
Katsuki snapped his head up, yanking on Denki as he spotted Hanta. "Come on!"
Eijirou made it inside first, Katsuki shoving Denki through the door before himself, panting heavily as Hanta slammed the door shut, locking it. Eijirou grabbed a desk and - with Katsuki's help - dragged it in front of the door.
People pounded on the door, screaming. But it wasn't people. It was a sick. One of the sick thrashed against the door, snarling and scratching, desperate to get inside, until a screaming student trying to climb the fence caught its attention.
Katsuki turned away as it pounced, pulling the student down and shredded into them.
Hanta closed the blind quickly, panting heavily.
"What... What the fuck..? What the fuck is going on..?"
Eijirou panted, looking around. "They're here... And there's... What was that? Did... Did a sick actually... Call others..?"
"Fucking what?" Hanta gasped, eyes blown wide.
Screaming in the hallway caught their attention real quick.
Katsuki inhaled deeply. "Where's Mina..?"
Denki gulped, still shaking. "Second... Second floor... She should be with... Mr. Yamada... Oh, fuck... Fuck, fuck..."
Katsuki didn't realize he was shaking until he ran his fingers through his hair, tears of shock and confusion burning his eyes. "We need to get to the second floor..."
