Truths
"You're a god damn liar!" Walker screamed as he freed himself from Evans's grasp and rushed to Roxie's side, "Roxie! Roxie...please..."
"She's going to be OK, but I need more time with her," Jenny said, "We need to move her to camp."
"Please...Walker..." Roxie begged him to let them take her, "I feel it working...I need...I need to go, baby."
Walker looked torn as he watched Evans—who was pleading with him to bring her, too. Evans couldn't breach the threshold until Walker told him he could—or Roxie.
"Let's get her in your Jeep—grab your stuff and we'll haul ass!" Jenny pitched out orders left and right, "Let me go with you and Evans can get your belongings."
Walker looked down at Roxie who was nodding and then back at Evans who was still looking at him to get the go-ahead.
"Fine...if you miss anything we'll come back. Just hurry. You can't be caught in there!" Walker growled.
Evans smiled as he rushed into the temple, "Don't worry about me, brother. Get your mate to safety. Jenny, tell Corey to bring the car around so I can fill it up!"
They drove for a good while, trying to get to the little commune in the woods that was inhabited by a sect of the Ragers.
Walker kept asking if Roxie was alright and glaring at Jenny to see any resemblance.
"Your mother was my mother."
"Margaret was not your mother..."
"I am older than you, Walker."
"So?"
"So...Maggie and my father who was an Omega got frisky before she got with your father and when my dad was killed she went to stay with your father who shipped me off to the Ragers."
"Lies..." Walker said, but he didn't know what he believed.
"Maggie visited me often—never telling your father about me. She hardly had any vampire blood in her at all. Your dad didn't know that when he married her because he married her for her money."
Walker knew that. Maddy had even told him that truth.
"I have a lot of pictures of the two of us together, but she died when I was a teenager...." Jenny said, "My family in the commune named me Jennifer, but my kept my birth name of Jeannette so I am Jennifer Jeannette."
"Why didn't you come to me?" Walker said, "Why..."
"You have a lot of vampiric blood and powers—or you will—because your mutation is special, as is Roxie's."
"Roxie's?"
"There are a lot of truths that you both need to know, Walker."
"Does my father know about you?"
"No," Jenny said, caressing Roxie's forehead, "But you can thank the witches for that."
"Witches..." Walker scoffed as he rounded the corner and drove onto a dirt path deeper within the forest, "You been watching me this whole time?"
"Mostly yes."
"But your asshole husband killed her dad."
"It's not that simple."
"It's seems pretty simple to me."
"Like, I said—you'll understand soon."
"Why now? Why not two years ago? Three or four?"
"We're here," Jenny said, as they entered a little village named Crow's Peak,"Park over there at that blue house. It's our infirmary. My asshole husband will take your belongings and your Jeep to your home."
"My home is in Myrtle...not here."
"If you want to protect her, you'll fucking listen to me, little brother. You love her and I see that—you haven't told her—not really—and she hasn't told you, but it's evident. You've done what you could."
"I didn't make it more than two states before you showed up."
"We would have found you regardless—you need to know everything before the ball."
Setting Roxie up in the infirmary, Walker didn't leave her side.
A few other healers came and went—very friendly and took to Roxie right away. Roxie was a sweetheart like that, though. She accepted the mutts.
"Walker, stop hating me.."
"My mother lied to me, Jenny."
"She died the day before she was supposed to tell you everything. The night she went over the cliffs, she had seen me and told me things that..."
Roxie stirred, moaning a bit.
"Walker?"
"Feed her,"Jenny said, "I'll let you two be."
Walker cut his wrist and fed Roxie, watching her suckle the nutrients like it would be her last time.
"Are you feeling better?"
"I am..a lot better. Thank you for letting them take us," Roxie said, "She's your—sister?"
"Apparently.."
"She's so kind."
"How can you say that? They killed your father."
"There is something more to it. I heard her tell you that, Walker," Roxie leaned back and licked her lips, "I would love a bath..."
"We have a house here," Walker sighed, "I never thought I'd be living side by side with the mutts."
"I want to take a bath with you.."
Walker nodded, "I'm sure you think you do, but,-"
"Walker?" Jenny knocked on the door of the patient room, "A word?"
Walker stroked Roxie's face and headed out to his sister.
"What is it?"
"Her hormones will be all over the place. You should know that—even though she just lost a child, she has to have her mate."
"We're..."
"You are," Jenny said, "As much as the two of you deny it, you'll be the only man who can feed her desires—no matter how grave and dark they might seem to you."
"Will you tell us everything?"
"I will tell you everything once the witches' caravan gets here."
"What? Witches,-no...not happening! I'm already dealing with the Ragers! She was stabbed by a witches dagger! How,-"
"They will be here in a few weeks,-"
"I don't have a few weeks, Jenny," Walker shook his head, "I..I failed at this."
"You have four months until the ball, actually," Jenny smiled, "You've not failed at all. She trusts you and wants to be with you, besides who's going to look for you here? Absolutely no one. Contrary to what my husband thinks of you, I don't hate you—I never have. I will get word to the others you trust, but not one more person. Do you trust Maddy?"
"I don't trust my father not to beat the truth out of her."
"Suri? Her coven? Your friends?"
"I can barely get a hold of Brett—it's like they're being....watched or threatened."
"I'll get my people to look into that, too," Jenny said, "In a few hours, she'll be free to go to your temporary home and you can show her just how much you love her."
