What Vacation Used to Be
"Caleb?" Dyson whispered and nudged his friend. "Wake up."
Caleb pretended to not hear him and stayed silent. He was exhausted after the day they had just had. What was supposed to be a leisurely 3-mile hike to their campsite had ended up being a 10 mile nearly pure incline. It had been hell. Of course, he should have known better than to let Dyson plan the trip. He was better with snacks and spontaneity.
Sure it had been fun, but that was only because it was impossible to not have fun when you were with Dyson. How could you not laugh with the guy who had on gold, leopard-spotted leggings, and a black shirt that said: "Wild and free like (shit emoji) after tacos"?
"Caleb," Dyson said louder and shoved Caleb harder. "You stopped snoring. I know you're awake."
"I don't snore," Caleb said without opening his eyes.
"Ah-ha!" Dyson declared. "You are awake. And you do snore."
"No and no," Caleb said through a smile.
"Caleb," Dyson whined in a silly voice. "It's too quiet."
"Silence can be deafening." Caleb murmured sleepily. "Listen to my snores and sleep."
"No. Come on!" Dyson shook his friend. "Please, wake up. Talk to me for a bit. I'm not ready to sleep."
"I'm tired." Caleb groaned.
"Friends don't make friends stay awake alone." Dyson pinched Caleb's side making Caleb yelp.
"Ah," Caleb tried to push Dyson away but he couldn't. He was laughing too hard. "Stop it."
"Stay awake."
"I want to sleep."
"No."
"Fine."
"Yes!" Dyson stopped tickling Caleb and clapped.
"What did you want to do?" Caleb asked.
"I thought you'd have an idea."
"I do." Caleb acted excited.
"I knew you would."
"Want to know what it is?"
"Of course I do."
Caleb grabbed Dyson's face and pulled him close.
"I WANT TO SLEEEEEP!"
"Geez." Dyson made a disgusted face. "You should brush your teeth before screaming into someone's mouth."
"Well, maybe I could have if someone hadn't thrown my bag at a raccoon." Caleb cocked an eyebrow at his insomniac of a friend.
"I thought it was a bear!" Dyson threw his arms up in defeat. "I thought I was saving your life."
"Then why didn't you use your bag?"
"It had my clothes."
"Mine had the food."
"Only some of it."
"It had the matches."
"We've always wanted to learn how to start a fire without matches."
Caleb shook his head. He knew when to admit defeat. He fell over laughing. "You are such an idiot."
"I saved your life."
"It was a raccoon!"
"It could have had rabies."
"Dyson, you missed it by like five feet."
Dyson looked from side to side thinking. "Okay, I guess I should've let you do the throwing. But, I don't feel bad for acting with courage and bravery."
Caleb couldn't stop laughing. He dropped his head into his hands as tears of laughter streamed down his cheeks.
"It's a wonder that you're still alive," Caleb said when he was finally able to breathe again.
"You're the one who has a habit of falling off roofs," Dyson said; his voice hoarse from laughing as well.
"Twice. It's only happened twice!"
"Three times," Dyson argued and counted them on his fingers. "One, when I got the eyebrow piercing. Two, when you tripped on the shingle you were trying to fix, and three, when you-" Dyson rubbed his chin. "Hmm. I guess you're right. It was only twice."
"See! Told you." Caleb smiled smugly.
"Do you two ever stop talking?" Dyson's mom yelled from her tent next to theirs.
"Shit." Caleb laughed.
"Sorry, Mom." Dyson collapsed onto Caleb laughing.
Caleb woke up in a cold sweat as if he had been having a nightmare rather than just reliving a memory. He shook his head until the memory dissipated just like the early morning fog. And that was how the entire week went. They pretended that everything was fine while Caleb was haunted by memories of what used to be. Dyson never came to his room again but each night Caleb stayed up waiting. By the end of the week, Caleb was exhausted.
"I wish we could stay up here forever," Bethany said as she clung to Adrian's neck.
The week had flown by for them all in different ways. Nothing exceptional happened, but nothing bad happened either. They were all calm and on their best behavior. Dyson and Caleb didn't talk after that first night, but something was different between them. There was just a tiny bit less ice in their looks.
"Me too," Adrian said as he kissed Bethany. "Me too."
"I'm ready to go home," Caleb said as Dyson came down with his bag and nodded. "Me too."
"You're both just jealous of how cute we are." Bethany stuck her tongue out.
"I'll be in the car." Caleb walked out of the house and got into the back of the car. Adrian seemed to have forgotten something and disappeared back upstairs. A bit too conveniently for Dyson's liking.
"Hey, Dyson?" Bethany gave him a serious look after they all watched Caleb walk away.
"Yeah?" Dyson knew that look. She was going to ask him to do something and he was sure he wasn't going to like it.
"Please go talk to him." She waved her hand to the door.
"He doesn't want to, Beth." Dyson laughed bitterly. "Don't you think I've tried?"
"Well try again." She pressed. "Can't you see that you both want to be back to what you were? I mean you told me once that you loved him. How can you not even be friends anymore."
"It's not that easy!" Dyson shouted. "We can't just go back to before. I don't have a fucking time machine and unless you have one in that tiny purse of yours I have no other way of doing it!"
"You don't need a time machine to fix the past." Bethany kept her voice calm. "You need to talk to him. Tell him what happened. Tell him that you love him. He'll understand."
"Beth!" Dyson rubbed his forehead with both of his hands out of frustration. "Just because you're happy and dating doesn't mean I'll instantly forget everything and follow suit. You don't know what happened."
"Then tell me, damn it." Bethany wanted to shake her friend. "Let me help you."
"You wouldn't understand." He said and hung his head. "Now, drop it and take me home."
"Fine," Bethany said, giving up. "Screw you and your pride. One day, you're going to realize that you lost the best part of you and it'll be too late."
"I already did that. I knew it the moment he walked away." Dyson slammed the door.
"That didn't go as planned," Adrian said as he walked around the corner out of the kitchen.
"Not at all." Bethany sighed. "Why can't they just fistfight and get over it like normal guys?"
"We're not cavemen, Beth." Adrian scoffed. "Also, this isn't a guy thing. It's more of a relationship thing. That's different. Until they talk nothing will change."
"Go make them talk then." Bethany pushed Adrian to the door.
Adrian chuckled. "They have to come to it on their own when they're ready. Until then we just have to be their friends."
"That's stupid." Bethany crossed her arms.
"Life is stupid sometimes." Adrian turned around and hugged her. "I mean you thought I was a douche."
"I still do sometimes."
"Touché. Now let's get home before your mom kills us for being late."
"Tell me that it will all work out."
"It'll all work out." He kissed her hair and led her outside.
"If it doesn't, I'm going to kick you in the shin."
"And I'll let you." Adrian ruffled her hair and hoped that everything would work out.
