Chapter 8
WARNING: Blood, guns
"Princey, move yar Genar-forsaken ass and start shootin'!" Virgil snapped, starting to panic now.
"I've never used a gun, I don't know how to do this!" Roman gabbled. Virgil stared at him.
"Ya're serious?!" He yelled. He held out his hand. "Blaster, now."
Roman handed it over gladly. Virgil rolled his eyes.
"I can't believe I'm teachin' a Resistance fighter to shoot." He muttered. "You hold the blaster still, that's the first thing." He held the blaster in his left hand and planted his right hand on his arm. "This usually helps." He closed one eye. "You look down the blaster," he said slowly, "aim," he pointed at a Resistance fighter on the far left, "and shoot."
The laser shot rang out through the junk yard and the Resistance fighter fell, blood pouring from their shoulder. Virgil handed the smoking blaster to Roman.
"Aim to wound, not kill." He explained. "Killin's illegal here, woundin's not. They got nothin' against you if you don't aim for anythin' vital." Roman stared at him. "Well? Go!"
Roman seemed to blink back to life and fumbled with the blaster. His first shot went into the floor, the second into the sky. Finally, he managed to get a handle on his shaking hands and shot at one of the fighters.
Virgil didn't see the shot get deflected and he didn't notice Roman leave his side. He needed to get this engine out.
"Roman Winston." The fighter in the middle read off a hologram as Roman inched closer. "For crimes against the Resistance, including going on missions alone, crashing 14 ships-"
"Make that 15." Roman said with a hint of pride. "If we're counting the numbered ones. 18 if we're not."
The fighter glared at him. "Crashing 15 ships," they growled, "and endangering your fellow fighters, you are here-by a prisoner of the Resistance." The two remaining Resistance fighter flanking the speaker pulled out guns too. "Come quickly and without protest and we won't colour the ground red with what's left of you."
"Look," Roman started. He'd always had a gift of the gab, time to find out if he could wheedle his way out of this one. "Guys, friends, my fellow..." He paused. "Ex-fellow fighters, I'd love to do that. I'd love to go with you and slowly clear up my reputation and get my pilot license back." He took a breath. Stalling. "But, I have a friend here."
Roman fought the urge to look behind him. Come on, Virgil, come through here.
"A friend who's in great need of my help." He said. "So, if you don't mind-"
Heat grazed the side of his face as a laser shot flew past him. Roman clapped his hand to his cheek. It came away red.
"What the Hell?!" He snapped, anger blooming out of seemingly nowhere. "What the actual Hell?!"
"If you do not come quietly," the speaker said, "we will have to use force."
"Use force my ass." Roman growled. He raised the gun, trying to stop his hands from shaking. Before he could do anything, however, the speaker in the middle started clutching at his throat. He clawed at the skin and made little choked half-noises.
"How 'bout I use Force instead." Roman jumped at the voice. Virgil was standing behind him, the engine tucked under one arm and a face like thunder. His arm was outstretched, fingers in a tight fist.
The speaker sunk to his knees, still making half-noises. His eyes rolled up in his head and he fell forward, motionless. Virgil blinked and dropped his hand. He stumbled back a little, breathing heavily. His eyes were wide as he stared at Roman.
Virgil shook his head a little. "I didn't- I don't-"
Roman didn't have time. He shot two hap-hazard shots at the Resistance fighters already scrabbling for the guns and grabbed Virgil's arm. He started dragging Virgil back. Virgil's feet pushed uselessly against the floor.
"For God's sakes, wake up!" Roman snapped. "He's not dead but we're gonna be if you don't start running!"
Virgil blinked quickly and shook his head. He blinked again and put his weight back on his feet. He nodded once before tearing off towards his ship, Roman following quickly behind.
I really like this story, I know no one else does but I do.
Bye,
Blaize
