The Boy who Lived
Philip Livingston POV
"A time turner?" (y/n) looked at the contraption with a puzzled look. "But how is it possible to go forward and back where you don't exist?"
I knew that it was best not to explain it. "I've seen the outcomes for over 70 years, (y/n). Every time the end result is the same; Lord Voldemort will try to destroy the world. You will be a key to stopping him from ruining everything and wiping out the muggles."
"You said you spent the last 70 years trying to fix it. What exactly happened?"
"In my first life, we both attend Hogwarts and you still get with Riddle. He becomes the biggest threat and wipes out all the muggles and we face him. He ends up killing you by accident and sets the entire world on fire. My second life we attend Hogwarts and he ends up trying to kill me for telling you to stay away from him. The third life you end up leaving him on your own and he stops at nothing to get you back, even killing your children. In the fourth life, we act oblivious and he kills my son, James Potter for trapping you without him. In every life, your existence is the catalyst for him turning. But there was one single time where he didn't turn."
Flashback, his 69th life
(y/n) was smiling next to Tom, both of them dancing at my wedding with Euphemia Potter. With me changing Tom finding out his heritage and forgiving his muggle father, proudly being a half-blood, the world was at peace, no muggle-borns innocently slaughtered at Hogwarts. Her and I attended, me in Ravenclaw and her in Slytherin. All our friends were alive, my father a proud and powerful wizard, the minister of magic himself! Lucerys Livingston sat with my mother's father, Garreth Malfoy.
Nothing went wrong and we continued to live our lives in peace, until (y/n)'s oldest son Pollux began his studies at Hogwarts. He was fascinated by his true heritage and turned out to be worse than his father, killing everyone including his own family. He kidnapped the Livingstons and slaughtered them all after finding out they had the powers to predict the future through glimpses. I held my wife's body close, staring at my nephew with horror. While Lord Voldemort had the decency to at least spare pure-bloods and half-bloods, Pollux was not so merciful. He left me no choice but to craft a wand so powerful that it would be impossible to defeat. I had seen more death than anyone in the world, but it was still heartbreaking.
I faced off against my nephew and almost lost my life in the process. "You will be fixed, I will make sure." So I turned the time turner to the present day, finding the flaw. It wasn't Voldemort who needed to be changed, or so I thought. It was the people around him. Even if my sister didn't love him like I saw in the 50th life, he or someone from his bloodline would destroy the world.
NOW
"I've been turning back time and going forward in time since I was able to," I said to (y/n). "I know I haven't been very honest with you, I was sworn to secrecy. I maintained my age here because of time itself, its a paradoxical concept, as muggles put it. But I've seen seventy versions of the world. This is the timeline, possibly the only one where the world isn't set aflame."
She watched me live each life, shaking at the end. "Philip, how...how are you sane?"
"I'm not." I showed her the 70th life, not proud of what I did. She saw as I eventually did join forces with Voldemort, tired from all the fighting. He ended up killing me for the Elder Wand and was ultimately defeated by my grandson Harry Potter, but Voldemort wasn't even human. He had a snake-like face and a complexion of a ghost, and my sister was on his side too. She was thrown in Azkaban as her children with the dark lord, all six of them, joined the Order that my son James Potter's friends lead. Harry Potter was the one who saved everyone, the boy who lived.
"Wow...what a horrible world!" She shivered. "I don't think I could ever join him."
"Not only that, but he also had no feelings. In that world and fourteen others, I never brewed him the antidote for the love potion. You know how he was conceived, yes? A child born from the love potion would never feel emotions. A lot of factors went into creating the perfect world, one where thousands don't get slaughtered." I sat down with exhaustion.
"But the price I pay is being exhausted all the time. My body may only be 38 in this life, but I'm over one hundred and seven years old. I figured out the way to beat him once and for all, but it involves me going so far back in time that I will not be able to come back." I placed my hand on hers, smiling. "I've seen the future outcomes that will happen when I go back. There are two, but you can save him, (nickname). The price I pay for saving everyone will mean that you must never come find me, do you understand?"
"What do you mean?"
I lifted her face and kissed her forehead like I did when we were children in the safety of our parent's embrace. "It means once I turn the time turner, I will give it to you. Do you know what the deathly hallows are?"
"The elder wand, the invisibility cloak, and the resurrection stone." She looked at my wand with curiosity.
"The magic I've learned over the years won't make one immortal, but it makes sense. In the first fifty lives, the deathly hallows didn't exist and it was a lot more difficult to win each battle." I squeezed her hand. "This will be the final gift I give you, sister. I just wanted to tell you before I disappear."
"Wait, disappear?"
"Yes. I told you, you must not follow me where I go. It is so far back in time that it will require an enormous amount of magic to get there. I'm over one hundred years old, I will live the rest of my life there." I waved the elder wand and showed her what exactly I planned to do, showing her the three brothers in the legends. "I saw myself doing this about a decade ago and it's finally now dawned on me that I will be the one that stories will know as Death itself. Our ancestors didn't meet Death, they met me. You must promise to never tell anyone, but tell them how I sacrificed myself and died."
"I don't want to see you go," she said with a sad face. "We just made up, Philip. I want you in my life."
"I know, (nickname). But this is the reason why I'm telling you this now. When you wake up, I will already be dead. Our lives were always tangents, I was there but not really there. You must take the elder wand from me, I will go back in time and craft a new one. He will retrieve a fake one that is none more powerful than his own wand, you will have the real one. Your mission is to change the future, and I will show you what exactly will happen. You must stick to it as much as you can, as it can save the entire world permanently."
She held the wand, staring at. "Philip, why didn't you and Father ever let us know you were magical?"
"The lives where everyone knew, we were killed far too soon. So right when Lucerys Livingston started getting premonitions, I had already gone back in time and warned him that his son, our father, would have to grow up and learn magic in secret and do the same with me. It was the only way to keep us safe. There was even a timeline in my 27th life where you and I didn't exist because someone evil knew just how powerful our father was. That is why we had to grow up the way we did, and I ended up teaching him more magic whenever I went back in time."
"So all the times you were distant and away, what happened? Were you in other timelines?"
"Yes, it's kind of hard to explain. Again, I was here but wasn't really here. As soon as you went to Hogwarts and I went to Ilvermorny, I wasn't actually there the full time, the headmaster there knew where I was and covered for me. Only Father and I knew, and Lucerys when I met him."
"But why didn't Grandfather step up to his other son bullying Father? He grew up ostracized and joined the war, only to be killed. That's why Mum hated the muggles."
"He actually went back in time before me," I said. "He went too far back and got stuck. I found his remains a while ago, he lived his life in the highlands and helped our ancestors hide from witchcraft persecution in the dark ages. Our family has been at the front of historical events for reasons, (y/n). The invention we worked on, all the Livingston men and women. It is only now during my time that we have succeeded in creating a time turner that will allow the user to live for a very long time. In the past, those who went back in time would live very short but very meaningful lives. It is the curse of our family, and it has now come to me to finish it once and for all."
Once she was informed of her mission, I went down to the main area of the Weasley Household. If my last hours in this world were to end, I wanted to spend as much time with my wife and son who would grow up without a father.
(y/n) bravely hid her sadness and ensured her children knew me, gently placing Daphne and Caelum in my arms.
The night felt like forever and I wished I could steal time, but I knew what my destiny was. I held my sister's hand and turned the device in a certain way, smiling at her one last time as she cried. "Be brave, (y/n). I can save yesterday and today, but you must save tomorrow. I will always be with you."
"I wish I could have you forever, Philip. We should've been closer and I should've listened to you."
"There are millions of what-ifs, as you know I know. But this is my destiny, I knew it since I was a child and got premonition dreams. Once I am gone, destroy it so no one can use it to reverse all the work our ancestors have done for centuries, leading right to Merlin himself." The clock started turning and I gave it to her, taking one last look at my twin and picture of my family. I closed my eyes in peace, knowing that she would choose to save Tom Riddle and be successful. But it all depended on me.
When I opened my eyes again, I was standing in a sunny meadow and heard three young boys complaining about a dangerous river that was said to have claimed the lives of so many. I watched in unison as they lifted their wands and created a bridge, feeling rather pleased about themselves once it was complete.
I apparated myself to the middle of the bridge to stop them from crossing, much to their alarm.
Far away in the distance, I saw two figures and my heart swelled to see them. Standing side by side and holding hands were my parents. I was ready to complete my destiny and join them, I knew the future was safe in (y/n)'s hands. I knew she would take care of my family and be successful in her endeavors to stop Tom Riddle.
