In the chapter Mary Sues, she had commented that Elena is a Mary Sue. And that comment of hers made me go on Wiki and check whether it is true or not.

Well... Sadly, Elena is a low  key Mary Sue so I will have to thank her for pointing that out.

But I have said low key because she doesn't have all the traits of a Mary Sue either.

So in this chapter, I am going to point out which aspects of her refer to a Mary Sue and which don't.

The Mary Sue Qualities:

Generally, in both books and TV shows, Elena has been portrayed as a complete angel. As a human, she's the sociable popular girl in and the girl next door. She's compassionate, caring, empathetic, kind, intelligent, beautiful, friendly and Caroline describes her as the mothering type. She is shown to be consistently polite, calm and composed.

In my opinion, having too many of these qualities in one person triggers the Mary Sue alert.

Besides she is loved by everyone and is always the center of attention so I think that's the reason why some people consider her as a Mary Sue.

The Non Mary Sue Qualities:

Elena Gilbert has her flaws. And flaws are something which do not exist in the realm of Mary Sues (the only flaw a Mary Sue could have is being clumsy).

Elena can be pushy, judgmental, selfish, at times prying into other peoples' business etc. She can also be a hypocrite, and gradually becomes more and more self-absorbed as the show continues. But the reasons for her flaws have been justified so I guess it's okay.

She undergoes several huge changes due to trauma, stress, loss and finally healing. She is flawed; not always able to treat her friends with proper respect, and acting in a smothering, if not controlling, manner toward her brother, Jeremy.

Overall Summary:

Overall, I will have to say that Elena is a low key Mary Sue. That is, the points of her Sueness are about 15 - 20% and that's it.

Of course there are a lot of people who have a similar personality to Elena's. Trust me, I have met some too. 

Just because a person is described as having all the good qualities and being loved by everyone doesn't mean that she is an absolute Mary Sue. 

Mary Sues are whiny and I don't think Elena was the whiny wimpy kind. I might not know much about the TV shows, but in the books she sure isn't.
