Jared Kleinman always had feelings.
His feelings were difficult to explain. His feelings lived deep inside of him, masked by snarky comments and annoying jokes. Thy were so hard to find that most people didn't think they existed. People thought Jared Kleinman was a stone cold boy with no heart. His only brain function managed to be finding the worst thing to say at the worst time and saying it. It was the worst thing that Jared could do for himself. He hated what he was. He really did, but he couldn't fix it. He really wished he could fix it. Jared wished a lot of things.
Evan Hansen liked to think he was hopelessly in love with his boyfriend, Liam.
Evan Hansen was lying to himself by thinking this.
Liam was not the best guy. He was the quarterback of the football team, he ate at Panda Express, exclusively, he watched nothing but home improvement shows, and, most importantly, he treated Evan like dirt.
Evan was a loyal boyfriend, willing to follow Liam to the ends of the earth jut to keep him happy. He wished Liam was the same way, but in all reality, he would walk all over Evan to look cool. Everyone thought he was either the coolest person they had ever met, or a total dick wad.
Evan wasn't sure what he thought of Liam.
But he knew what Liam thought of him.

Liam thought Evan was just a little piece in his overall game. Evan treated Liam like a king, and Liam thought of Evan as nothing but a peasant; a nothing. He just wanted to be in control of who he was dating. Evan knew it was just an act to gain his street cred back after he came out as gay. Everyone thought of him as a pansy, and Liam was determined to not be a pansy.
In a way, Evan deserved it, for if he wasn't stupid enough to date someone like Liam, he'd never be in this mess. If he broke up with him, well, Evan would for sure be a dead man.
This was the problem, though, because Evan maybe sort of, kinda, let it slip that he was unhappy in his relationship with Liam.
And Liam knows.
"Evan, I'm coming over, tonight. We need to talk." Liam grabbed Evan's hand harshly. His gray eyes were full of a passion that was unfamiliar to Evan. It was a malice, almost. His smile did not give up his feelings towards Evan. Evan knew it would be the end for him. In several ways, he was horribly afraid, but in some ways, Evan was really curious to see what he would do. He wanted to see how far he'd go just to have a reputation. Liam was not a forgiving person. He had reminded Evan in the daily about a time in fourth grade when Evan stumbled into him and know he'd him over. Liam used everything against Evan, whether it be an untied shoelace or dissatisfactory performance during (really not enjoyable) sex. Evan was trapped. He didn't know what to do.
"Alright, Liam. I'll clean my room." Evan chuckled nervously.
"Just be ready for me, Evan."

Evan sat in the corner of his room, trying not to let his emotions get the best of him as Liam relentlessly pounded on his bedroom door. "Evvy, babe, I know you're in there." Liam knocked again, making Evan gulp. "Open up, Evan."
Sighing, Evan stood, feeling his heart race. He let his trembling fingers turn the lick on the doorknob, only to be met with the door smacking him square in the face. He stumbled back, holding his nose and looking up at Liam.
Liam was wearing his usual letterman jacket, black skinny jeans, and white tee shirt. He had a grin plastered on his face, a chuckle finding a way to claw its way out of his lips. Evan stepped back, cowering in fear. Liam stepped towards him. "A little birdie tells me that you are unhappy with me. Would you like to elaborate?"
"That's... that's not true!" Evan frantically spat out. His eyes betrayed what he was trying to hide. He was horrified. He didn't want to know what was going to happen, but he did know. Liam was going to murder him. He just knew it.
"Really, Evan? Then, why do you look so afraid of me?" Liam's voice shook. "Evan Hansen, answer the damn question!" He grabbed Evan by the collar of his shirt, Evan's events flashing with the brightest burning terror he had ever seen, and then, suddenly, Liam's fist connected with his face, and Liam dropped him, kicking him, hard.
Each blow felt like Liam was cracking an eggshell. Evan felt his ribs break in contact, his stomach heaving, trying to get a word out. It was difficult to watch, and it was most definitely difficult to feel. Evan had never gone through a beating this rough, before.
"Get up, Evan!" Liam wrapped his knuckles around his collar, once more, yanking him up and smashing the back of his head into the wall.
Evan knew, at that point, that Liam was going to go all the way.
He desperately tried to get Liam off of him, but he was too strong. Evan was legitimately screwed. Liam wrapped his fingers around Evan's throat, restricting his airway.
Evan read about this.
Five to ten seconds, he'll be okay.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
Shit.
"Liam," he choked out, but no sound was produced. Evan wanted to cry. He wanted to scream. He wanted a lot of things, but he didn't want to die.
It's been forty five seconds, now, and Evan was losing consciousness by the second. He didn't know what to do. He just wanted to get out.
And then, as he was attempting to keep himself awake, he realized three fundamental truths at the exact same time.
He was going to die, here.
He was terrified.
And he was accepting it.
Evan Hansen had one thought as he was headed down into that black abyss of what he assumed was death.

When Jared strutted into Evan's room that evening to work on their Geometry project, he did not expect to see Liam choking Evan to death against his own wall.
Liam swore he loved Evan, but Jared saw right through it. He saw the way Evan clinched under Liam's touch. He saw through the way Liam smiled when he kissed Evan. It all was a lie, and now, Jared just had to help.
"Get off him!" Jared tire Liam off of Evan, who fell to the floor, his eyes shut. Jared did not hesitate to punch Liam square in the face four times. He heard a crack, and Liam was sent running out, Jared screaming gibberish after him.
Jared rushed to Evan's side, his heart breaking at the sight. Evan's nose was definitely broken. Blood dropped from his lips and nostrils, and several cuts in his face and arms. Liam's ring must have torn his skin. Evan was unconscious, and Jared didn't even want to come any closer, in fear of hurting the boy even more.
But he then realized that Evan wasn't breathing.
And then Jared was pushing on his chest relentlessly.
And then Jared had his mouth on Evan's, trying so hard to keep his air flow steady. "Come on, Ev." Jared continued to attempt to resuscitate the poor boy.
And then Evan coughed, not opening his eyes.
"Oh, thank god."
Jared summed up all his strength, pushing aside his fear of hurting Evan, and picked him up, rushing down the stairs, out the door, and into the back seat of his car. "Evan, you'll be okay. I promise you, you'll be fine." Jared pulled out of the driveway, pushing on the gas so hard he nearly ran into a tree. He ran four red lights on the way, his knuckles whiter than snow.
But in a matter of four minutes, Jared was rushing into the hospital, Evan slung over his shoulder, screaming for help.
And then Evan was being taken off of his shoulder, and rushed behind closed doors, that Jared couldn't go through no matter how hard he begged.
Jared was left to think.
He messed up.
He should have stood up to Liam long ago. He knew Evan was being abused, but Evan begged him not to tell anyone. He would always cover his bruises with long sleeved tee shirts or concealer, not letting anyone see how bad his situation was.
Heidi didn't even know
Which made it a lot harder for him to explain when she rushed out of those same doors, eyes locked on Jared with fear and sadness in her stride. "Jared Kleinman, I want an explanation, now."
Jared nearly cowered away from bear in anxiety, but she was crying just as hard as he was.
Jared opened his eyes to speak, but all that came out was an anxious sob. He took several minutes to get a word out, and when he did, all he could say was, "Boyfriend... Liam... a—" he choked. "Abusive."
Heidi's breath hitched.
"He was choking him, and I pulled him off, and then Evan wasn't breathing and oh my god I am so sorry Heidi this is all my fault." It was all one big sentence. Jared was shaking, Evan's blood still in his hand. "I tried so hard please tell me he'll be okay."
Heidi sighed, putting her hand on Jared's shoulder, pulling him into the biggest bear hug she had ever given anyone besides her son. "Thank you, Jared. I'll check on him."
Heidi stood, pushing herself through the door, only to emerge a moment later, grabbing Jared's hand and leading him through the doors. "He's with me."
She led him into a small room, where Evan sat, feeling the bruises on his neck, flinching when he touched them. He drew his eyebrows together, glancing upward towards the door. His face lit up when he saw his mother and Jared. "Hi!" His voice was a whisper, and it confused him, because he drew his eyebrows together once more and put his hands against his vocal chords. "Oh, wow."
"Hey, Ev." Heidi smiled, kissing his forehead. "I'm so glad you're okay."
Evan nodded, looking down.
"Evan, I told her about Liam," Jared said it too quickly, as if to not get the message across the first time. "She knows."
Evan broke into sobs at that. "I didn't want to tell you. I... he..."
"Ev, it's okay. I'll go get you some water. Jared, you mind staying a while?" Heidi squeezed Evan's hand.
Then there were two.
"Evan, I.. I didn't know how bad it was."
"I'm sorry. I should have told you."
"You did, Ev. I just didn't take you as seriously as I should have." Jared subconsciously grabbed Evan's hand, running circles on the back of it.
"Jared?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you so much."
Jared smiled weakly, chuckling as little bit. He brought Evan's hand to his lip, smiling. "Of course, you idiot. I fucking love you."
