Past Memories
Song: I can't breath- Bea Miller
I let a week go by and then I stop by again. I give the guy another hundred, this time he looks at me like I have for sure lost my mind. When I knock, she of course answers the door and her face lights up when she notices that it is me again.
"You're back. I'm surprised you came back. Please come in; you can drop the groceries on the table again like you did the last time."
I walk in and follow her to the other room. "It's nice to see you again. I hope you have been doing well."
"Oh yes dear, just marvelous. The last time you were here you seemed a little out of sorts. I feel like I might hax scared you away with all the talk about Sara. How are you doing today dear?"
I clear my throat, "I'm doing well actually. I'm sorry that I just took off like that last time."
"It's ok. It was like you saw an old ghost...or maybe it was me that saw an old ghost. I didn't mean to scare you off," she says again.
When I turn around she is right behind me. She reaches up and touches my cheek and her eyes glass over with tears. "You do resemble so much like her and there is something in those eyes of yours...it's like I have known you for years." She removes her hands and glances away from me. "May I offer you a nice cup of tea, if you are not in a rush that is?"
I look at my phone for the time. "No I can sit with you for a few minutes, I guess."
She motions for me to sit down on the sofa. As she leaves the room, my eyes scan over all the pictures again. When she comes back into the room she is holding a tray with two cups of tea and sugar cubes. "I wasn't sure how you liked your tea dear."
"Oh this is fine...thank you." I take the cup from her. I wait for her to sit beside me before I take a small sip. The warm liquid feels good going down. She takes a sip and smiles politely back to me.
"So dear...I don't think I ever caught your name?"
"My friends call me Vi."
"Oh...lovely dear is that short for something?"
"Actually it is...it's..." I wanted to say Violet so bad but would that be right for me to do so. "Vivian."
"Oh...lovely...my name is Evelyn." She slowly takes another sip. "My husband passed away a few years ago. The only family I have now is my son William. He has two kids of his own and even though he doesn't live too far from here, they rarely come and see me."
"That's sad...I hate to hear that." We sit there in silence for a few moments.
"So I noticed you had a bad limp there dear...were you in an accident?"
My hand goes right to my leg as if it has a mind of it's own. I guess it wouldn't hurt to talk a little bit about myself. "Yes...it was an accident of sorts. I use to be a dancer."
"Oh...lovely...my granddaughter use to love to dance." She stands up and grabs a picture off the mantel. "This is Carlie and her little sister Violet...oh how those girls loved to put on a show."
As I look at the picture, I have to fight back the tears. I so remember that day just like it was yesterday. I smile and bat the tears away. "They are so cute." I stare into the picture. "Anyway I was dancing for this show and the guy I was dancing with landed on my ankle and broke it. It's a little painful to talk about." I blink a few times to make the tears go away. It's not the freaking memory of him that causes the tears; it's the sight of me and Carlie dancing together. "Anyway, I was doing pretty well but a few months ago I slipped and caused more issues with it. I'm healing though. I supposed to be using a crutch or a cane but it's kind of annoying to use."
"I would have loved to see you dance, dear. I bet you were dazzling."
I slowly nod my head. I try to find other things to talk about. "So what happened to your other son, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Oh...he disappeared years ago." She says so matter-of-factly, not even blinking or tearing up about it as if she has grown to deal with it. "There was a search party and everything. No one knew anything it was like they were here and gone in a blink of an eye."
"The whole family...that's a little odd don't you think?"
"Yes it was. We used our life savings trying to hire private detectives to search for them. All the authorities kept saying maybe they needed to leave or was on a trip and decide to stay. But they were all wrong; my Sam would never have done that. I know he is gone from this Earth, I just can't prove it."
"That is so sad." I take another sip of the tea.
"I haven't talked about them in years but he will always be right here in my heart." She takes her hand and holds it over her chest. She sits her cup down on the tray. "Can I show you something?" She gets up before I can say anything. She walks across the room and grabs a book off of the shelf and then walks back over to me. She opens it up to family photos. She starts to point to certain pictures. "This is my Sam. He was my first born. He was a spitfire growing up."
She flips through the album, when she gets to a certain page she then points to a woman. "This was Sara when they first met." She turns the page and this time there is a bigger picture with her and Sam together. "You see that...look real close dear...what do you see?"
My hands start to tremble as I touch her face. I slowly look up at her. I didn't notice the stray tear running down my cheek until she reached over and wipes it away. "I look so much like her. I...I...lied to you about my name. It's actually Violet."
In the mention of my name she quickly leans in to me and wraps her arms around me. "I know who you are my sweet child. You come back home. I knew you would one day." She is holding me for dear life and I can feel her body as she weeps. She is shedding tears over me.
I pull away from her with tears in my eyes. "I shouldn't have come here. I'm sorry if I caused you any painful memories."
"No dear child, I have waited so long for this day. How did you know how to find me? Where have you been? Where is Sam; your mother?" She shoots out question after question and I know she wants to know everything but I don't know what to tell her.
"You were right, he is gone from this Earth but I know he is with his father now up in Heaven along with the rest of the family. I don't know what to tell you. I was really little when I was...was..." I look up at her and tears are streaming down her face. "I didn't come here to hurt you. I just wanted to see what you were like."
"Please can you tell me what happened? Please; I have to know."
I close my eyes for only a second. I don't even know where to begin. "Did Sam have another wife before Sara?"
She gives me this strange look. "Yes...it didn't last that long, why?"
"He had another child didn't he?"
"Yes, how did you know that? He never told anyone about him."
"I have had plenty of time to look things up over the years. Shawn hated his father so much that he wanted him to pay for everything. I don't know all the details of that night. I wish I did, but I don't. Look all I know is that we were playing in the floor and someone broke into the house. There were gun shots and Carlie told me to run. So that is what I did. I was just a little kid."
Her hands quickly cover over her mouth the whole time in shock. She keeps shaking her head back and forth like this can't be real. "How do you know it was Shawn? Why would he do that? The police checked the house several time there was not breaking in and the house was spotless."
"That's because he had hired a cleaner to clean the house, making sure not to leave anything behind. I guess he wanted to make sure he wasn't to blame for anything that happened. I'm sorry you had to find out this way."
"I knew it was bad. I just didn't know it was this bad. I always knew they were murdered." She reaches over and grabs a tissue from the box on the side table. "Where have you been all these years?"
"That night, Carlie shoved me out of the bedroom window. I was scared and didn't know where to go. I was lost and someone found me. They have been really good to me all these years." There is no way that I would ever be able to tell her the whole truth.
"I would like to meet them. They took care of my girl...I should thank them." She reaches over and touches my knee softly.
My hand covers her hand and I grip it firmly. "They don't know I am here. I would like to keep it that way."
"But..."
"No...it's for the best and I don't want anyone to know I was here. You can't tell William. You can't tell anyone."
"But he is your uncle. You have no idea what he has been through. Dear he would love to see you."
"I'm sorry, it's just safer this way for me, for now anyway. I promise I will eventually I just can't do it right now." I glance down at the time. "I should be going." I stand up quickly, placing the album back on the table.
She stands up and hugs me. "I love you sweet girl. Promise me you will come back to see me."
"I will."
