Chapter 1: If Only

Lauren Allan, 17, Annie Pratt, 16, and Gabrielle Ren, 17, were walking home not too late one night, or they'd be past town curfew. "C'mon guys. I mean. History is freaky." Annie said, rambling off to her friends more history facts about the war, the same war she was obsessed with saying that it was 'only a matter of time until the Night Bearers broke the walls'. Her two friends just looked at each other. The four of them, the other being Dana Bates, 16, had gone to the movies that night and were walking home. Dana was the first to be dropped off and Annie was next. "Hey guys are you sure you can make it home in time? It's 15 minutes til curfew." Annie questioned, "I'm sure you could stay at our house if you needed it."

"Annie, stop worry we'll be fine." Gaby said, Lauren nodded in agreement. "Fine I'll see y'all tomorrow." Annie waved goodbye as she turned toward the walk to her house. "Only a block away." Gaby told Lauren after Annie left. "Yeah. You know. Unless we get bitten." Lauren joked and they both laughed. Then, in the trees, there was a hissing noise. "Do you hear that?" Gaby asked, slightly frightened. "Hear what? Don't tell me Annie's gotten in your head Gaby." Lauren replied.

The hissing stopped and Gaby looked around and laughed. "Maybe. I don't know. I just thought I heard something." She said, she looked up at the bright moon, "huh."

"What?"

"The moon, it's waxing, becoming bigger. Looks pretty. Too bad it isn't full yet. That's when it's prettiest."

"Yeah. How do you know it's waxing?"

"I don't know just something Dana said about waning and waxing. And Annie told me that the moon looked smaller the other night."

"Oh. Well c'mon let's get home." Lauren said and Gaby followed.

In the Night you can clearly see 2 people walking down the street, that is, until they were pulled into the forest with not so much as a sound. Then, the figures were gone, and the clock in town square struck 8, curfew.

(I thought about doing here but since I'm a nice author...)

The Next Morning
ALERT ALERT the television screeched. All residents walked out to their living rooms, Annie making a spot next to her brother, 19 year old Kaden. In the television we see police and rescue teams were searching the woods, not even a block away. Next thing you know, the television shows rescue teams bringing a body out on a gurney, in a black bag. Annie gasped in horror. "Breaking news: last night 2 teenage girls were on their way home when the unexpected happened. So far police have found the body of 17 year old Lauren Allan. A second teenager is still missing. If anybody has seen 17 year old Gabrielle Ren please contact the authorities." The television went black.

"Oh my god." Annie said just above a whisper. Kaden looked at her with sympathy. Her mother came into the room with the telephone in her hand, "That was the school. School's been cancelled for the rest of the week. Honey I'm so sorry." She said.

Annie kept mumbling under her breath, "If only I'd insisted they'd come in. If only I hadn't asked them to go to the movies. If only I'd walked them home."

Later in the day nobody was home, and if they were they were leaving Annie alone. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. Annie went to answer the door, but she opened it up to the last person she'd expected to see. "Lauren." She said just above a whisper, staring at one of her best friends in bewilderment. She looked as if she'd been in the woods and there were two, faint holes in her neck.

"Annie. I need your help. Just....Don't freak out."
