CH Sidecanon: Eternals (behavior)
The second report on the ancestors of Countryhumans; Eternals, will focus on notable behaviors and interactions between them and their own kind, as well as humans and their environment. A disclaimer must be made that as more and more eternals are found and brought out of hiding, they may act very differently than reported, it's only fair given their situations and the circumstances in which they are found. If one finds a "wild" eternal, or knows the possible location of one, please do not approach or initiate an interaction with them, simply call your local animal control, DO NOT call the police, the flashing lights, sounds, and weapons will frighten them into attacking, call animal control and remain at a safe distance, only interact with them if they speak to you first, and remain calm like you are talking to a skittish deer.
The reason for such caution is simple: eternals are extremely untrusting and fearful of humans. From what we now understand, human history is just as old as countryhumans, and our ancestors used to live alongside Eternals some millions of years ago. But as humans do, they caused the mass extinction of the earth around 65 million years ago, what was thought to be a meteor strike that killed the dinosaurs, was a nuclear holocaust that drove trillions of species to extinction or underground. There are rumors that the earth is hollow and that most of the species retreated to this inner ecosystem, while it is unproven it was a legend that the eternals held onto since well before the extinctions, some even claimed to have visited it, but if it is true, the knowledge of how to get there has long been lost, and it's likely for the best we can't get there, as humans are no less destructive when we evolved back into existence.
Eternals are very defensive and often hostile to any human that they see, uninhabited areas with high disappearance rates are often the territories of these eternals, and are closed off from the public until the eternal can be located and removed to a safer environment. Of course, this is when the eternal is alone, there used to be entire underground colonies filled with dozens of eternals, all living in tightly-kit communities in order to protect each other and try to rebuild their populace. There were at least one or two major colonies on all continents except Antarctica, and unfortunately, all documented ones were destroyed by humans, only the North American colony, better known as the Anasazi indian tribes, did not vanish because of humanity, not even the remaining eternals know what happened to it.
The way Eternals interact with each other and their surroundings is quite similar to native tribes of the world, they tried to live in balance with their world, taking only what they needed and trying to give back what they took, and some eternals still do to this day. One of their biggest beliefs was in the food web, they believed that they needed to remain pray to a larger animal to remain in harmony with the Earth, as once one stops being pray, even to simple scavengers, that's when they become destructive. This ideology does hold some merit to their species, since eternals and countryhumans cannot die of old age, not being hunted means they could overpopulate the world given enough time, since it was quite uncommon for wars and diseases to occur for them. Following this they also had a few rules about reproducing, they could have any number of mates they wanted, as life-long relationships were a rather impractical concept to them, but each eternal had a limit of how many children they could bear, and once they met that limit they would have to go to a doctor to be made infertile.
Interspecies breeding was a very common thing, as the offspring would usually take after the parent who birthed them, if both parents were males that is, if it was a male-female relationship, the child/children would be a hybrid of the two. Hybrids were treated with the same respect and love as purebreds, but they usually would be born infertile and could not continue the bloodline. Of course, as with humans, certain species were not treated or didn't treat others equally. The former examples are Rougarou (werewolves), Sirens, Kumiho (nine-tailed foxes), and Manticores, these species and ones similar were believed to be dangerous and deceptive, simply not to be trusted, they could live alongside other eternals, but were usually given judgmental stares and wide births. On the other side of the coin, Dragons, feather-winged, and Kirin eternals were very vain creatures, they believed they were above other species, which was mildly true with the eternals with feathered wings, as they were usually the leaders of the many kingdoms the old eternal empire was made of, they and the other two never really abused their positions or openly beat down "lesser" species, but it was still well known that they thought they were better and so no one really tried to interact with them.
In current times, with no empire and hundreds of species gone forever, eternals are very protective of their few members, no matter the species, dragons do the same work as the centaurs, Rougarous get the same meals as the humanoid eternals, and everyone does their part to keep their kind alive, and us humans will do our best to change our ways, to extend a hand to these citizens of the world, and maybe one day we can help to mend some of the wounds our ancestors left on our home.
