Chapter 13: From Past To Present

Well, things didn't turn out as bad as the Mandorians anticipated at first, GE did keep his word and made them the official leaders of the kingdom and helped them get their people and home back on their feet.  The support didn't last forever though, about three decades later Mandara and Derogan had installed a democracy, something they learned about in Greece, and when GE found out he wasn't pleased, as they did it without his permission and he thought a democracy would be dangerous to his empire.

So as punishment he ceased all financial aid to Mandoria, thinking that they would tear down the new government when they eventually crashed.  Little did GE know that he accidentally helped the brothers, as not having financial aid forced them to learn how to properly run their country on their own rather than depend on someone else to do it for them.

By the time GE realized what he involuntarily did it was a few years later, the new country of Mandara had grown in power, not enough to challenge GE's rule, but it was enough to rival smaller countries and become an important trading partner to the German Empire, so GE allowed them to keep their government.

As for the brothers, running a country was super hard for them since they were trained to rule a kingdom, not control a democracy.  They weren't completely alone though, despite GE's refusal to help them anymore, they did reach out to fellow democratic countries for aid, and a few did.  The brothers had to learn from the countries in secret however because GE had strict policies when it came to contacting countries outside of his empire or that are not allied with him.

By the time they were comfortably running their country without assistance, The Great War had begun and GE was rallying his allies to fight with him.  Because of their inexperience and the pledge they made to GE, Mandara and Derogan ended up fighting with the Central Powers to take over Europe.  Their efforts in the war didn't last long, however, because with their inexperience coming into play, it was about sixteen months before they surrendered to Russian Empire.  If they were any other country's RE would have probably ripped their wings off, but back in the day he was an ally to Mandoria and they both greatly respected each other, so he spared the brothers as long as they agreed to stop fighting, so they did and instead became a refuge country for the Allies.

When the Great War ended and the German Empire fell, the country at long last was free of all German influence.  The brothers were thankful that they were finally free to lead how they want, but deep down they missed GE, or rather more accurately, they missed Deutsche.  He was the reason they were who they are today, he warned them of Prussia's challenge to Mandoria, he helped them survive when they were living on the road, and he defeated his own father for them.

Mandara missed him more than Derogan did since he loved him at one time, to the point that he tried to visit him several times while he was alive, but it never ended well.  GE had his tongue removed by the Allies as retribution, and he was forced to watch A-H be dismembered and killed, that moment had changed him into a cruel, unfeeling ex-empire who rejected Mandara every time he tried to visit, and eventually, the heartbroken Mandarian had to accept that the man he once loved was never coming back.

The Great War brought about change for everyone, but one of the greatest changes was the creation of the very first full-time entity and the new King Wing; League of Nations.  After Prussia had died, there was no King Wing for a while since he was defeated by a wingless country, and back then, winged law stated that the title of King Wing had to be earned in fair combat, but because LoN was a full-time entity, he had the power to rewrite those laws.  Another thing he did was invent militant and special entities, he noticed that some countries had two or more countryhumans ruling it and he believed that those countries would become too powerful and pose a risk to international peace.

One by one, LoN had summoned any country with more than one countryhuman to have one of them be turned into an entity.  When it became Mandara and Derogan's turn, they were nervous, they never witnessed the process of creating an entity and they wondered if it was dangerous at all.  They both arrived at LoN's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and were escorted to the entity's office.

"Ah, if it isn't the Mandorian princes, Mandara and Derogan," LoN said when they entered, he gave a small bow to show respect, "it is truly an honor to stand within your presence."

"It is an honor for us as well, League of Nations," Mandara said, he and Derogan bowed back and kept their wings lowered as a sign of respect.

"So, I assume you both know why you're here," LoN asked, the brothers nodded and he smiled in satisfaction, "excellent, so does that mean you have decided who will become the militant?"

Mandara and Derogan exchanged glances, nodded in unison at each other, and Derogan stepped forward, "League of Nations, we have decided that I shall become Trigger's new militant entity, and I shall be the leader of the Mandarian Army."

"Splendid," LoN declared, "now before we start, you must know that becoming the entity of your military means you must take on the name of your military.  From now on you will no longer be called Derogan, you shall henceforth be known as General Mandara Army, do you understand?"

Derogan was hesitant about answering, it didn't feel right that he had to change his name, it was a part of him and what made him who he was, LoN shouldn't be able to take that away from him.  After a brief moment of deliberation, Derogan gave a nod that he understood and was ready, LoN then looked to Mandara to see if he was ready, and he nodded too.

"Good, let us begin then," the full-time entity declared, "first, Derogan, you need to face your brother."  He did without question.

"Next, I am going to place my hand over your right eye, I understand that it might be uncomfortable to you but this is just how the process works."

Derogan simply nodded again, so LoN covered his right eye.  He then said to Mandara, "Now all you have to do is touch two fingers to his forehead and imagine an invisible line connecting the two of you."

Mandara nodded in understanding and did as told, Derogan flinched when a sudden pain stabbed through his head.  Mandara immediately pulled his hand away when he saw his brother in distress, he was going to question LoN about it but the entity raised his left hand to silence him, then removed his right from over Derogan's eye.  The Mandarian had his eye closed this whole time and blinked it open when LoN uncovered it.  He saw a surprised look on his sibling's face, he reacted with a confused one on his own.

"What is it, did it work?" he asked, but Mandara remained speechless.

LoN, who had walked out from behind Derogan by now, grabbed a hand-held mirror from his desk and gave it to the Mandarian, "see for yourself," he said.

Derogan took the mirror and held it in front of his face, his eyes widened from what they saw.  The white part of his right eye had turned an inky black, and if it weren't for his ocean blue iris it would have looked like he had no eye at all since it blended seamlessly with the black part of his flag, in fact, the shield that outlined his eye had disappeared.

"Can you see out of it, Thunder?" Mandara asked when he found his voice.

Derogan closed his left eye to check then nodded.  Satisfied with his vision, he gave the mirror back to LoN and asked, "why is the shield around my eye gone, it's part of my flag."

"Indeed it is," LoN agreed, "and that is why you will be wearing this, Mandara Army."

The full-time entity walked back to his desk, pulled out a drawer, and took something out of it.  He walked back to the Mandarians and handed Derogan - Mandara Army rather - an eyepatch, the new militant took it and inspected it, it was designed to look like the shield that had previously outlined his eye, except it had the sun and crescent moon in the middle this time.

"Why would I need this," he asked, "I can see out of my eye."

"I know, it is more like a symbol to show people that you're a militant, because I have learned that humans are slightly put off by our black eyes."

MA hummed but said nothing, he put on the patch to make sure it fit, which it did.  "How do I look?" he asked the two in the room.

"Not bad, pretty cool actually," Mandara commented, LoN nodded in agreement.

"So ... what now?" MA then asked.

"Now, you will have complete control over all military branches and programs in your country," LoN explained, "your soldiers will answer to you and you alone, you will plan out battles and manage war expenses during wartime, and oversee national security and act as Mandara's personal bodyguard during peacetime.  In return, the entity-line grants you exceeded healing and your nutritional needs will be sustained as long as Mandara is healthy."

"Huh," the brothers said in unison, then Mandara asked, "is that all?"

"Afraid not, there are some very important downsides that you both need to know.  First, as previously mentioned, if your healthy then Mandara Army is healthy, but if you get hurt then your brother will feel a smaller pain in the same area.  But the most important is that you can sever the entity-line.  In doing so, you are severing his connection to you, and when a militant has no country to connect to, they will not be able to sustain themselves and eventually die.  And if the country dies then the line will be severed as well."

MA and Mandara looked quite horrified that Mandara had such power against his brother, he literally had MA's life in his hands.

"Why would I do that LoN, he's my brother," Mandara said, MA on his end took a step away from his sibling, like at any moment he could sever the line and kill him.

"As a fail-safe," the entity responded, "Mandara Army also has the power to sever the line, and if he does that, then he becomes an insurgent and will try to take control of your country."

"I would never do that LoN," MA said angrily, "I have no desire to take control."

"I'm sorry Mandara Army, it's nothing personal, all entity-lines have the same rules to keep a balance of power between country and entity."

MA growled at LoN and his feathers bristled, "first you take away my name, then you force me into a situation where my own brother could kill me at the drop of a hat, I won't have it, take away this curse you cast onto us!"

LoN stepped back in shock and raised his hands in surrender, "I-I can't, what's done is done, it's irreversible now."

"Thunder, you need to calm down," Mandara said gripping his brother's arm, "I'm not going to kill you, we have been through way too much for me to even consider such a thing, please, just calm down before you do something you're going to regret."

MA turned to him with a fiery anger in his eye, but it dimmed as he saw his brother's pleading ones, so he took a deep breath and settled down a little.

Mandara patted his arm a bit and turned back to LoN, "I am terribly sorry about that LoN, we should probably get going, thank you for your time."

LoN simply nodded, so the brothers left his office to head home, they entered this building as Mandara and Derogan; the princes of Mandoria, and their leaving as Mandara and Mandara Army; country and militant entity of Mandara.
