Chapter 10: Can We Trust Him Anymore?
"Deutsche, I don't think this is a good idea," Derogan said.
"Derogan, he was my friend when we were kids so I know that he can help, but you're going to have to trust me," Deutsche reassured him.
Deutsche, Mandara, and Derogan were meeting with an old friend of the German's who was supposed to help them defeat Prussia. Ottoman Greece allowed Deutsche's friend to come into the country so the four could discuss their plans against Prussia, but the brothers were nervous because the friend is the son of Austria Empire, an old enemy of their father.
"Deutsche, try to see it from our perspective, his father was an enemy to our father, we just have trouble believing that he would want to help us," Mandara said with concern.
"My father is Prussia and I helped you, didn't I," Deutsche said, that made the brothers shut up.
About half an hour later, a fancy horse carriage pulled up in front of Greece's palace where the princes were waiting. The human driver got down from his set and opened the door, partially bowing in the process, then after a moment, a country stepped out. This country looked to be about Deutsche's age and was dressed in a pearl white outfit that resembled a fancy uniform rather than royal attire. His flag had four stripes, the top one was red, the second was white, and the bottom one was split into two red and green stripes. The brothers were quite put off by this country's eyes as they were silver in color, similar to Prussia's, but as the country walked towards them and was tapping a cane he had, they realized he was blind.
"A-H, my dear friend, long time no see," Deutsche greeted as his friend approached.
"Indeed Deutsche, I honestly thought your father abandoned you again and you finally got lost," A-H joked.
Deutsche chuckled and the two hugged, "it's good to see you too, mein Freund."
When they were done embracing, Deutsche clasped a hand on A-H's shoulder and turned to the brothers, "Mandara, Derogan, I would like you to meet my childhood friend, Austria-Hungary. A-H, these are the Mandorian brothers Mandara and Derogan."
"So I have heard," A-H smiled and held out his hand for a handshake, "it's a pleasure to finally make your acquaintances, your Majesties."
The brothers each shook his hand, even though they didn't feel too strongly about him, they still acted respectfully towards him since he was their friend's friend.
"It is a pleasure for us as well, Sir Austria-Hungary" Derogan said, "and we have heard a bit about you too, Deutsche says you can help us with our Prussia Problem."
"That is the plan, but perhaps we could save that for later, I just got here after all," A-H responded.
"Of course, where are our manners," Mandara said, then elbowed his brother for getting to the point too fast, "right this way, Sir Austria-Hungary."
"Just A-H is fine, being called sir sounds way too sophisticated for a leisurely visit," A-H said as he followed the three princes. Mandara and Derogan gave each other confused looks, this wasn't supposed to be a "leisurely visit", they were supposed to be meeting to plan how to take down Prussia, why did A-H think otherwise? The brothers decided it would be rude to ask so they left the conversation at that.
The first day of A-H's visit was mostly about him and Deutsche catching up and the both of them telling the brothers some childhood stories. The Mandorian's eventually started to relax around the newcomer and ended up telling a few stories of their own, with A-H's favorite being Derogan's squirrel story, much to Derogan's dismay. The brother's learned a lot about A-H, he was an excellent hunter and superb horseback rider despite being blind, he was the general of AE's army, and he claims to have outraced Commonwealth on horseback, the siblings didn't believe that last one though since Commonwealth was the fastest winged country in the world and much faster than any horse.
The next few days are when the four got down to business talking about how to defeat Prussia, and because A-H was the general of an entire army they actually had a chance against him. Since the Mandorians didn't have any experience leading wars they let Deutsche and A-H take the lead and they just observed.
As the German and Austrian were planning, Mandara and Derogan both noticed some concerning details about A-H. The way he planned out battles and covert missions would lead to extremely high death rates for the enemy, which wouldn't have been a problem if the siblings didn't know that there was going to be Mandorians being forced to fight with the Prussians. A-H also seemed to secretly enjoy explaining details as gory as possible, there was a small glint of bloodlust when he would talk about killing, to the point that it was starting to scare the brothers.
At one point they pulled Deutsche away and tried to voice their concerns, but he wasn't having it.
"Why do you two have to be so paranoid," Deutsche said sharply, "we are trying to get you your home back and you still don't trust him?!"
"We're just trying to tell you he's dangerous," Mandara tried to explain, "the looked in his eyes we have only seen from one other person, and that person is the one we're going to fight."
"Mandara, I have known that man for forty-eight years, I would have known by now if he was unstable, and he is not, but you two wouldn't know that because you're too fucking blind to see when someone is trying to help you!" Deutsche roared.
The way he shouted at them was enough to make Mandara cower behind his big brother and for Derogan to shield Mandara with his wing and both to take a step back, because for a very brief moment, they felt like they were face to face with Prussia again.
Deutsche noticed the terrified expressions on their faces and he realized what he did. His brows furrowed and his face went from angry to regretful in the blink of an eye.
"Oh mein Gott, I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to shout like that," he apologized, he took a step forward, and the brothers took a step back.
"J-just s-stay back German," Derogan stuttered fearfully, hugging Mandara protectively.
"Derogan, it's ok, I'm not going to hurt you two, I'm the same Deutsche you both know." Deutsche tried to reassure them, but it was too late.
"Are you though?" Derogan asked, his tone beginning to turn angry, "ever since your friend showed up you have been different. You two constantly talk about violence and slaughtering people and when you're not talking you hang around him so much we've barely seen you at all, and you know what the worst part is, I heard you two talking about claiming our kingdom for yourselves."
Mandara, whose face was buried in Derogan's chest from fear, looked at Deutsche in disbelief, "y-you really said that Deutsche?"
"No, no I would never say that, you two are the only family I have, I wouldn't betray you like that," the German desperately explained, "A-H and I were talking about making it look like we claimed the kingdom, so when Prussia falls no one will try to take it before you two can be established as the rulers."
The brothers stared at him for a long time, they didn't know what to think, they had trusted Deutsche for years and also considered him family in one way or another, but this friend that they barely knew anything about was making them turn on one another.
"Deutsche, it is very clear that A-H is driving you further away from us, he can't stay," Derogan stated.
"Oh come on, you are being unreasonable, A-H is our only chance to defeat Prussia-"
"and he can still help, but it's better if he does it from a distance so we don't have to worry about him turning you against us, so tell him to leave."
"He is not turning me against you, I swear by God that I am doing all this for you,"
"Then prove it Deutsche, it's either us or him!"
The German was left speechless from those last words, how had things come to the point that the brothers didn't trust him enough to have A-H around, he didn't want to choose, they were all his friends, or at least he thought they were.
Unfortunately, Deutsche's hesitation was the final straw for the Mandorians, "So that's how it is then," Derogan said coldly
"What, but I didn't say anything," Deutsche said confused.
"Exactly German," Derogan barked, "if you truly thought of us as family you would have picked us without hesitation, but you didn't."
With that, Derogan tried to lead Mandara away from Deutsche, but he didn't move.
Deutsche took this as Mandara might still trust him so he said, "please Mandara, I swear A-H is helping us, you have to trust me, please."
Mandara didn't say anything right away, his mind was so overwhelmed that he didn't know what to think, but he eventually muttered, "I don't know if I can Deutsche, I love you and you know that, but A-H scares me and what you two have been doing together scares me. Father always told me that when I was scared to stay close to him or Derogan, father isn't here anymore, so I have to stay close to Derogan. I'm sorry."
With a sad sigh, Mandara turned away from the German and went with Derogan. Deutsche watched them go until they were out of sight, he then just stood there in confusion and sadness.
"Well that went well," a voice came from behind Deutsche, who turned around and saw A-H.
"How long have you been standing there?" he asked.
"Long enough to hear everything," A-H responded, he then walked up to Deutsche, "I thought you said they trusted you?"
Deutsche sighed again, "I thought they did too, I guess I was wrong."
"So are we still going up against Prussia, or is it not worth it anymore?"
The German was quiet for a minute as he thought about it, then he straightened up and put on a determined face, "we are, even if the Mandorians don't trust me anymore, I still have to get my revenge on Prussia, and if that means hurting those two, then so be it."
With that, Deutsche walked away, but A-H didn't follow just yet, instead he allowed a smug smile to grace his lips.
"Well done Deutsche," he said to himself, "those Mandorians were holding you back, now you can focus on more important things, like me."
And with a devious chuckle, A-H followed after the German, humming gleefully that the brothers were now out of the picture and away from his beloved Deutsche.
