Chapter 16
Prompt from @silvermoon_artemis (ao3 user): Loki should totally follow Y/N on her mission, regardless of what it is. Maybe stepping in when she seems to need help, like an overprotective boyfriend. Or maybe she really does need help and he helps. If he shows himself to the public that would be great for his I'm-not-crazy thing, but if he just lends her a bit of power somehow, then, well, no one will know but Y/N.
And he's definitely wondering to himself like "why do I care about this mortal so much???" And then he finds out she has powers and he uses that as an excuse to stay with her, because who doesn't want to figure out an interesting new magic power?
A/N: sorry about the lack of updates, I'm still in shock from the new loki trailer <33 I hope you enjoy this one, it's a bit longer. Please keep sending prompts!:)
...
The mission will be an easy one.
Fury's deliberately given you an easy first assignment, and you don't know whether to be relieved or annoyed about it. Part of you is indignant (you are the youngest SHIELD agent ever recruited, you can handle more than this), but part of you is almost thankful.
You're ready for it to be tough, but you know you have to get it over and done with. Much as it pains you to admit it, Fury had been right when he'd said that it would be easier after you got the first mission out of the way.
It's the day after you'd received your assignment, and you're preparing to leave with Amber and Josh, another agent. You know that Loki was allowed out of his cell yesterday, but you haven't heard any further news.
At this exact moment, however, your mind is on other things. He hasn't come to wish you good luck. But why would he? You don't let yourself think about it.
"Agent Y/L/N, Agent Jackson, Agent Collins. Your car is here."
You swallow nervously and nod, not allowing any emotion to show on your face. Just get it over with. It'll get easier.
In the car another agent gives the three of you a rundown of the mission; it should barely take one day, let alone the two you've been given. At the end of his monologue he looks as though he wants to say something about the fact that you haven't been in the field for a while.
You give him a look that clearly says 'don't' and he bows his head, closing the file he had open on his lap. Amber and Josh are watching you. You have to address it. You've been thinking about it all of yesterday and today.
Last night you'd even practiced. It's been years since you've actively tried to use your powers; you'd almost hoped they had disappeared. They hadn't.
"Okay. You guys have probably heard rumours about me being... about me having-"
"Y/N, you don't have to." Amber says kindly. Again, she reminds you so forcefully of Jas that you have to take a second. You miss her so much.
"I should." you smile back at Amber grimly, and she nods gently. Josh is watching you with a look of kind concern on his face.
"It's nothing special, really. Just... it kind of..." you find yourself unable to explain, and instead close your eyes and concentrate on bringing it to the surface. You'd trained yourself from a young age to control it; apparently the training had stuck.
You open your eyes and fight desperately hard not to feel slightly pleased at the looks of awe on Amber's, Josh's and the other Agent's faces.
Bright blue pulsating energy is running up and down your hands and arms. You try not to look at it.
"Whoa." Amber says, awestruck. You let it fade and force yourself to smile at the two agents sat opposite you.
"I prefer not to use it if I can avoid it... but it helps out. Sometimes."
The next few hours pass quickly; you'd forgotten how fast time moves when you're working in the field. After what feels like no time at all you, Amber and Josh are in position around the building that you're infiltrating, and you're about to properly begin your first mission back.
For some reason you don't feel as nervous as you thought you would. You've missed the feeling of an earpiece in your ear, annoying as you find them. The gun in the holster on your hip feels reassuring, as do the knives you have strapped to your calves under your suit.
"Okay. Moving in now." Amber says over your earpiece. You take a deep breath, and begin picking the lock of the door you're stood outside of.
After a minute or two you hear a satisfying sounding 'click' and open the door gently. There's no one on the other side, so you start making your way up the corridor.
The assignment is simple: you're to acquire two targets and get them to the SHIELD transport vehicle that is waiting outside, disguised as a regular van.
You and Amber have been assigned one target each, while Josh is to get to the control room where he'll be able to tell you exactly where each of the targets are, and hopefully get some doors unlocked for you.
It should take about thirty minutes, maximum.
You get to twelve minutes before something goes wrong. You've not yet encountered anyone, but Josh had to overcome two guards to get into the control room which took longer than expected, meaning you had no idea where you were meant to be going and Amber had to subdue two guards on her end too.
"Sorry, I'm sorry. I'm in." Josh pants over your earpiece, and you sigh as Amber reprimands him.
"Where am I going Josh?" you cut across her, looking both ways down the corridor. You still haven't seen anyone.
"Left, Y/N. And you, Amber."
You encounter two people on the next turn and subdue them easily without needing to remove your weapons, gaining only a slightly bruised elbow.
"Okay, target one is in the room on your right, Y/N. He's not armed, as far as I can see, but there are two others with him." Josh tells you, and you turn to look at the door, gritting your teeth. The targets are well trained fighters, so you're expecting them to put up a good fight.
"Okay." you reply, your voice hushed, reaching down to grab one of the knives strapped to your calf.
"They're big guys. Do you want to wait for backup?" Josh asks you in concern.
"No. I'll be alright." you reply, and Josh starts reeling off instructions to Amber instead.
You take a deep breath, and then kick the door open. The three men spin around to look at you. One of them (unfortunately for him he's not the target, who you've been told not to harm) smirks.
Seconds later there's a knife protruding from his left shoulder, and you're halfway towards the man on the other side of the target.
The fight takes about three and a half minutes, but by the end of it you're struggling. The two men that had been with the target lie out cold on the floor, but the target himself is proving much harder to subdue.
You're pretty sure you've broken his wrist (you'll have to explain that one when you get back to HQ), but he continues to put up an excellent fight. It's only when he has you in a tight headlock which you're struggling to escape from and your vision is going blurry that you concede to using your powers.
He flies backwards away from you and hits the far wall, slumping to the ground, unconscious. You blink a few times to try and regain your vision, and when you do there's someone else stood in the room with you.
He looks unbearably pleased with himself, and a little bit fascinated.
"I must admit, that was rather impressive." Loki says, leaning back against the wall and crossing his arms. You stand before him, astonished, covered in bruises and blood and completely out of breath.
You open your mouth to speak, but he holds up a hand and says 'ah', pointing at your earpiece. Reaching up to turn it off you wince; something's wrong with your arm.
Loki sees this and frowns, but it's your turn to talk.
"Why are you here?!" you ask him, pushing your hair out of your eyes.
"Bored." he tells you, smirking as you roll your eyes and turn away, moving towards the target who is still slumped against the far wall.
"Wait. You're hurt." he says, teleporting to stand in your way.
"I'm fine."
"Don't be stubborn." he says, holding out his hand. You stare at him, before tentatively offering him your arm.
"Can you..?"
"Fix it? Probably." he says, frowning in concentration as he feels your arm. You gasp in pain as his fingers reach the point just above your elbow.
"Sorry." he says, and then your arm grows very cold, then very warm. His hands and your upper arm are glowing green. You stare, mesmerised.
"I wanted to see what all the fuss was about you." he tells you, and you look back at him. He's stood very close.
"And did you?" you ask, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes. I did."
You look away from his piercing gaze quickly, and he removes his hands from your arm.
"Just like that?" you ask, flexing your arm in disbelief.
"Just like that." he says. Then he winks at you, and disappears.
Seconds later, Amber rushes into the room.
"Are you okay?! Why did you turn your earpiece off?!"
"Must have knocked it when I was fighting." you say apologetically.
