Jon's point of view
It was just a normal work day for me. I was working at the World Trade Center in the Southern Tower of the Twin Towers in a bureau on the 83rd floor, together with my friends Paisley and Richie. Paisley and I were seated in one bureau, while Richie was in another, but he came over to us in every break he had. I've known him for nearly a lifetime, and I've always liked him in a special kind of way. His smile lit up the sky and his looks were strikingly beautiful. He was my reason to live these days and motivated me to get through another day at work.
"Hey Jonny, man, what's up with you today? You seem a bit spaced out", Paisley said from beside me and I turned to face her, being greeted by her blue eyes and blonde curls, a frown on her face.
"Just thinkin', nothing important", I lied, but I knew she knew I lied. I just had that gut feeling I didn't want to tell anybody. It said to me that I was in danger, that we were all in danger. And through all my life my gut feeling had never fooled me. I was apruptly thrown out of my thoughts as Richie entered our room, smiling brightly.
"Hey Paisley, and hey Jonny", he beamed and went over to Paisley, kissing her cheek in a charming way and pulling me out of my seat into a warm hug. His coconut scented shampoo filled my nostrils as I hugged him back and let myself smile for a moment.
"Hey Rich, how long do you have time?", I asked and he smiled sadly.
"Just enough time to bring you guys a new coffee to get you through this still so early day", he replied with a wink and let me go again with a kiss on the cheek. I blushed and smiled, but the smile didn't reach my eyes. The fear in my gut made itself known again.
"Jonny, is everything alright? Rich, he has been this way all day", Paisley asked and Richie's face turned into a worried frown as he took me into a hug again.
"You wanna talk about it?", he whispered and I shivered, but finally nodded.
"There is this feeling following me all day. It's like it wants to warn me that something really bad is going to happen and we will all suffer from it. It makes me sick", I choked out with wide eyes and a trembling bottom lip, just about to burst into tears.
"Oh Jonny, it's just a feeling. Nothing will happen to us, we all just get this day at work done and go out for a coffee afterwards. Paisley will be here with you and I'll be just next door", Richie tried to soothe me, but it only worked halfway. He believed me, I could see that in his face. The last time I said I had a terrifying gut feeling, my mum had been in a car accident and nearly died. So I knew that Richie was just trying to talk off the seriousness of it to soothe himself as well. With a last serious look into my eyes he left the room again, leaving Paisley and me in silence behind. I looked at my watch. It was 8:45 a.m.. And just as the hand of the clock switched to 8:46, it happened. The most horrifying thing I have ever seen in my life.
A plane was flying right into the Nothern Tower of the World Trade Center and exploded in it. Giant flames engulfed the floors the plane had hit, the loud boom of the explosion causing Paisley to snap her head towards the window.
"Holy shit", she whispered, horror written onto her face. She quickly raced over to me at the window, clinging onto my arm while we watched the clouds of smoke leaving the giant holes in the building. All I could think was something like Ohmygodohmygodfuckfuckfuck. Just seconds later Richie burst into the room. His eyes were blown wide in fear, and all he managed to do was embrace us into a hug before turning on the television.
"We understand that there has been a plane crash on the southern tip of Manhattan, you're looking at the World Trade Center. We understand that a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center and we don't know anything more than that, we don't know if it was a commercial aircraft, we don't know if it was a private aircraft, we have no idea how many were on board or what the extend of the injuries are right now."
Horrified I clung onto Richie, just before he turned the television off because of an announcement from our boss.
"We've just been witnesses of how a plane crashed into the Nothern Tower. It has been an accident. Please remain calm and stay in your bureaus. We'll be giving you more information soon."
Then there was silence.
No one could move because of the undescribable fear and the gut feelings that told you it wasn't just an accident. Richie had taken my hand and I felt his body trembling in fear, his grip so tight that his knuckles grew white. I wanted to soothe him, to tell him it's alright, but I couldn't lie to him. It wasn't going to be alright.
Paisley was the first that moved.
"I'm going out", she firmly said and stormed out of the room, running to the elevators and disappearing in one. Richie and I were still unable to move, not knowing how to deal with the whole situation.
We remained there on the couch for something like ten minutes clinging to each other, when there was another incredibly loud boom. And this time from under us. As flames and smoke came through the window, I finally lost control and started to panic.
"Fuck! What the hell is happening?", I yelled and Richie tugged at my arm, pulling me up and out of the room, running towards the stairs and downwards, the smoke getting thicker the farer we got. But we had to see what had happened.
"Rich, I can't breathe!", I finally choked out and he turned around again and pulled me up the stairs, fighting against the swarm of people trying to get down and out of the building. As soon as we reached my bureau again, there was another announcement from our boss.
"A plane just crashed into the Southern Tower. We're starting to evacuate the Southern Tower now."
Relief spreaded through me, but soon I noticed something terrifying. The plane had crashed under us, so it had cut off any ways out. We were trapped in the upper part and there was a surety of 100% that we would die. We couldn't get out, we couldn't jump out of the window because we were on the fucking 83rd floor. There was no way out. Realising that, I turned to Richie, who had started to cry. There was no way of denying that the plane crashes were both on purpose.
"Rich, we can't get out of here. There's no way out."
My words made him tear up even more as he hugged me tightly, his sobs shaking both of our bodies.
"I don't want you to die Jonny", he sobbed and I hugged him tighter. Wait, he wasn't afraid to die, only afraid that I would die? I buried my head on his shoulder, breathing his smell in deeply and trying to ignore the heavy undertone of smoke. I had to try to comfort him at least.
As Richie lifted his head again, his sobs had stopped, even though the panic was still written clearly onto his handsome face.
"If we die anyway, I have to get something off my soul first", he whispered and searched my eyes with his own, taking my hand.
"Jonny, I love you with all my heart. I want you to know that before we die", he continued and looked into my tearfilled eyes, wide in fear from the situation around us but now also in wonder and surprise. I decided to just be brave enough to tell him what I was feeling too. Hey, we would be dead soon anyways.
"I love you too Rich, even if we die we'll be together for eternity", I replied and a small smile spread on his lips before he desperately pulled me into a kiss, the both of us closing our eyes just as the walls around us came tumbling down.
