Shouto hummed happily, sinking back into his office chair, iced coffee in hand. He's not much of a coffee drinker, but he absolutely hated the tea the interns made. He also wasn't willing to let them know that he hated it.
Besides, he needed a good wake-up after such a boring patrol. He didn't have an angry, whiny Katsuki bitching about how quiet it is or Izuku excitedly looking around and bouncing about as if seeing everything for the first time. No, today he patrolled with Tenya Iida.
At the thought of his mate, Shouto looked to the newest addition to his desk. Just a small, simple picture, but it meant the world to the Alpha.
An ultrasound of his little pup, growing inside his bubbly mate.
He smiled and grabbed the frame, brushing his thumb over the little garbled shape of his pup. They'd be bigger now, this ultrasound having been taken at eight weeks. Izuku is around thirteen weeks, now, barely showing. Shouto couldn't wait to feel his pup moving around. He already loved talking to them each night.
After two years of trying and nearly giving up, Izuku was finally pregnant. They were finally starting their family.
~
Shouto yawned and stretched after locking up his shared agency, rubbing his neck as he began to walk away. His phone rang and he blinked as he looked at the contact.
"Hello? Kirishima?"
"Hey, man..."
The duel-quirk user raised a brow, turning his keys over as he walked to his car. "What is it? You don't normally call. Are you still with Izuku and Uraraka?"
"Uhm... Yeah, kind of..."
Shouto chuckled, opening his car door. "Kind of? Did Izuku wander off again? I'm sure he's looking at clothes for the pup."
Eijirou sighed on the other line. "No, that's... Midoriya didn't... Todoroki, there was an incident... We're at the hospital."
He froze, one foot in the car, keys slipping out of his hand and hitting the asphalt. Shouto's throat ran dry, stomach dropping. He swallowed, gripping his phone. "Who... Who got hurt..? Uraraka..?"
"No. It's Midoriya..."
~
Everything feels so strange. He hurts, but doesn't at the same time. He is definitely in a hospital bed, though. He's been in one enough times to tell. Why he's in one is beyond him, though.
Izuku breathed deeply and shifted as he woke more, blinking slowly and looking to his surroundings. The curtains over the window to the hallway were drawn enough that he could just see through a small sliver. He spotted red hair to one side of the sliver. Eijirou is sitting outside his room. The blinds on the window to the outside were shut. His room was dark, aside from the little light let in through both windows.
His mate sat in a nearby chair, head in his hands and elbows on his knees.
The Omega sighed. He's worried his mate. God, it's going to take a while to settle him. He's fine now, though. Everything is okay.
"Shou," he called out with a quiet croon.
Shouto snapped his head up, Izuku startled by the reaction and whining when he saw tears tracking down his mate's distraught face. He's never seen Shouto so... Hurt and sad.
Izuku crooned again and reached out to him.
The Alpha watched him for a moment, then looked away.
"Shouto," Izuku whimpered, wincing as he moved. "Shouto, it's okay..."
"No, it's not..."
The greenette frowned. "Shouto, I don't even feel that bad. I can just- we can go home soon. Please, come here..." Why is he being like this..?
Shouto growled and Izuku flinched. His mate never growled. What happened?
"Shou, we're okay... We're right here, okay? Please, I-"
"No..."
"No, what? What is it?"
"They're gone..."
Izuku's breath caught, entire body going rigid. No, that can't be right. The pup was fine. His back was a bit sore, yes, but he felt fine otherwise. He tried to smile, but it probably didn't look like much of one. "No... No, they're okay. They're fine- we just saw the doctor and they said that the pup is healthy-"
"Izuku, they're gone!"
The Omega gasped and jolted, eyes wide as he looked up to his mate. Shouto abruptly stood, eyes hard and wet as he looked down to Izuku. "They're fucking gone, damnit! You killed them!"
Izuku reeled back into the bed, pressing into the pillows and overwhlemed by the heavy scent his mate released. Tears stung his eyes as he began to tremble. "N-no, I- I didn't- I just-"
"You knew how dangerous using your quirk was for the pup and you did it anyways! Our pup is dead! Gone, because of you!"
The Omega sobbed, breathing heavily and heart racing. As his heart monitor beeped faster, Eijirou burst into the room, followed by some nurses.
Eijirou's wide eyes flicked between the furious Alpha and the trembling Omega, then he growled and forced himself between them, shielding Izuku as the nurses hurried over and tried to calm him. "Out!" He hissed, pointing to the door.
Shouto growled back, nearly startling the Beta, but stormed out, unable to slam the door with Ochako holding it. His mate's wails of grief barely registered, his own grief clouding his head.
~
Eijirou sighed, sitting in the chair he pulled up beside Izuku's bed. The Omega had to be sedated, so he was asleep once again. Ochako sat beside him, gaze downcast.
"What did he say to him..?" She asked softly after several minutes of silence only filled by the heart monitor.
"He blamed Midoriya," Eijirou answered softly.
She snapped her head up, eyes wide. "What!?"
Eijirou rubbed his face. "He said that Midoriya killed the pup. Said that they're gone because of him."
"But- he wasn't there! He has no idea what happened! How can he say that- how can- he just-" More tears gathered in the brunette's eyes and she sobbed, looking back to the greenette.
The Beta looked away, then down as his phone rang. He pulled it out to stare at the contact, then stood. "It's Katsuki... I'll be back."
Ochako nodded but didn't say anything as he stepped out. He answered and closed the door. "Hey..."
"Hey, Eij. Did I wake you? I didn't think it was that late there."
"No, no, you didn't wake me. Sorry, it's just- it's been a rough day..." Eijirou leaned against the wall, looking up to the ceiling.
Katsuki chuckled on the other line. "Didn't you have the day off?"
"Yeah..."
"Wanna talk about it?"
Eijirou pursed his lips. "I... I hung out with Midoriya and Uraraka today... We went to the mall just to... Hang out and catch up, I guess..."
"Does sound exhausting being surrounded by Deku and Round-Face."
"Kats..."
"Right, right." Katsuki hummed, amused with himself. "Go on. I'm listening."
Eijirou sighed once again. Probably for the millionth time that day. "There was an attack." He could practically hear Katsuki immediately go on full-alert, even though he's across the world in America. "Midoriya got hurt... He... He lost the pup... We're at the hospital right now."
Katsuki stayed silent. Eijirou really wished he was right there with him. This would be easier. Maybe not. Maybe it wouldn't be. But his mate would still be there with him.
Finally, Eijirou heard the blond breathe deeply. "I'm coming home." God, it was like he could read minds.
"No, you have the meeting-"
"I'm coming home, Eij. I'll miss the meeting. I'll grab the first flight I can."
Eijirou hummed, rubbing his arm. "Okay... Let me know the times and I'll pick you up."
"Yeah, I will... Eij..?"
"Yeah..?"
"I love you..."
The Beta smiled softly, tension in his shoulders easing just a bit. "I love you, too..."
~
Ochako guided Izuku into her apartment, Tenya holding the door for them. The greenette trembled, tears in his eyes but expression blank. He was sat down on the sofa and a blanket was wrapped around his shoulders.
"Hungry?" Tenya asked softly, crouching in front of the Omega.
Izuku didn't answer. Tenya isn't even sure he was heard. The Alpha sighed, placing his hand on Izuku's knee. "Midoriya..?"
Slowly, the Omega looked up and met his gaze. Tenya hummed, brushing his thumb back and forth. "Is there anything I can get you..? Food, some water?"
Ochako sat beside the greenette, arm around his shoulders. She watched him closely, rubbing his arm.
Izuku glanced around for a moment, then shook his head. "No... I'm not hungry..."
"Water?"
"No thank you, Iida..."
The Alpha sighed, but nodded. "Okay... Just let us know if you do need anything okay?" Izuku just nodded, another tear sliding down his pale cheek.
A knock at their door had Tenya up and moving across the door.
Momo, Eijirou and Tsuyu stood there, Tsu with an armfull of blankets. A nest. A nest is a good idea. He could smell some of their other friend's scents on them.
Tenya stepped aside, letting in the small group.
The ravenette was quickest to Izuku, sitting opposite of Ochako. She pulled him into her chest and stroked his hair.
Tsuyu, instead of making a typical nest, gently laid the blankets on top of Izuku's lap and over the blanket he already had. Then she sat on the back of the couch behind him, carding her fingers through his hair.
Eijirou sat on the floor, folding his arms over Izuku's knees and resting his chin on them.
Izuku began to tremble, lip shuddering. He hiccuped before he sobbed, one shaky hand grasping onto Momo, the other being taken by Eijirou.
The female Alpha rocked slowly back and forth, whispering into his hair.
Ochako crooned sadly, nuzzling his shoulder to scent him, Tsuyu continuing her ministrations. Eijirou run his thumb over Izuku's knuckles, his scent staying soft.
Tenya crouched once again beside Eijirou, closing his eyes and trying not to focus on the foul, heavy distress emanating from his friend.
"We're right here," Tenya whispered softly, releasing the most calming scent he could. "We're here for you, Midoriya..."
~
Momo sighed as she approached Tenya, rubbing her arms. "I managed to get him to sleep. Eijirou is still with him but Ochako and Tsu headed out for their shifts," she whispered, leaning against the counter.
Tenya hummed and nodded, staring into his glass of water.
The ravenette looked up to him. "Where is Todoroki..? Doesn't he know? Shouldn't Izuku be with him..?"
Tenya bit back a growl, running his fingers through his hair instead. "No... Not right now, it wouldn't be a good idea."
"Why?"
"You'll have to ask Ochako or Kirishima for the full story, but... When Midoriya woke up, Todoroki told him he killed the pup... He blamed Midoriya," his voice was low as he glanced to the slumbering greenette on his sofa, swaddled in blankets with Eijirou sitting on the floor beside him.
Momo's eyes widened in horror, fingers curling tight into her arms. "He what..? But this isn't his fault! How could he say that? How could he blame Izuku?"
Tanya shrugged, exhaling slowly. "I'm not sure... Grief does... Awful things, Yaoyorozu..."
She whimpered and bit her lip, startling at a knock on the door. She waved to Tenya and shuffled to the door opening it.
Kyoka, Denki and Mina stood, Mina and Denki smiling sadly in greeting.
"He's sleeping, but you can come in," Momo murmured, stepping aside.
"That's okay." Denki lifted his armfull of nesting supplies, then made his way to the sofa. With Mina's and Eijirou's help, Denki made a makeshift nest around Izuku, each Beta careful not to wake the Omega.
Kyoka stood by Momo, placing a hand on her back. "How is he..?"
Momo sighed and shook her head. "Not great... When I got here, he looked so empty... Then after a while he just cried... He cried until he fell asleep which was only just a few minutes ago..."
"Oh, God... Poor Midoriya... He was so excited for that pup," Kyoka whispered, looking to the other Omega. "They both were... They tried so hard..."
The female Alpha nodded slowly. "Yeah..."
~
Izuku slept a lot, body still recovering from the trauma and the loss. He pretty much stayed on Tenya's and Ochako's sofa, Eijirou glued to his side. Everyone else visited when they could, dropping off articles into Izuku's ever-growing nest.
For two days, he hardly ate. Barely drank, struggled to get up on his own and move. He was hollow - a shell of the person they all knew.
And of course, his mate was no where to be found.
Day three, Izuku was woken by a new scent and a gruff voice.
As soon as they noticed he was awake, they were by his side.
"Hey..."
Izuku blinked the sleep from his eyes, rubbing his cheek as he sat up. Callused hands brushed his hair back and rubbed his shoulders. "Morning, nerd... Didn't think you'd ever wake up..."
"Kacchan..?" His voice was so hoarse from the crying. He's so pathetic...
The blond chuckled. "Yeah, it's me... I came as fast as I could... I couldn't get a flight until last night, but I made it. How're you feeling..?" His voice was soft and gentle as he sat beside Izuku, carefully adjusting the nest to sit comfortably.
Izuku didn't react for a moment. How is he feeling? How does he answer that? He's feeling everything and nothing all at once. He whimpered and shook, rubbing at his eyes.
Katsuki frowned and pulled him into his chest. Izuku sobbed, curling up. Pathetic. Useless...
He clung to the Alpha tightly, nuzzling close to his scent gland. Katsuki rubbed his back. "I know... I know," he whispered, swaying slowly.
"I-I lost my pup!" The Omega hiccuped. "They're gone! I can't- I can't feel them, I-" he broke into hysterical sobs, heaving for breath.
Katsuki grit his teeth, holding the greenette tighter. He let Izuku cry into his shoulder, looking over to his mate.
Eijirou sat on the coffee table in front of them, eyes sad and glistening with tears.
"I killed them! I killed my pup!"
He stiffened, Eijirou's eyes widening.
"No, no!" The redhead got down on his knees, grabbing Izuku. "Don't let what he said get to you! You didn't do anything! This isn't your fault!"
"Who said that..?" Katsuki muttered, raising his hand into Izuku's hair to press the Omega into his scent gland as he released more of his scent.
Izuku didn't answer between his hiccups.
Eijirou gulped, meeting Katsuki's gaze.
The Alpha bared his teeth, biting back a growl. "Who told him he killed his pup?"
His mate sighed and looked away. Izuku trembled. Katsuki turned to Tenya. His glare hardened.
Tenya licked his lips and adjusted his glasses.
"Was it fuckin' icyhot..?"
The Omega curled up tighter.
Katsuki didn't need a clearer answer.
"Where is he..?"
"D-don't," Izuku stuttered, tugging on Katsuki's shirt. "H-he's right... I should have been better... I should have been more careful... It's my fault..."
"No it fuckin' ain't!" Katsuki snapped at him, growl barely contained at this point. Izuku flinched, pressing closer. "Just... This isn't your fault... It's not anyone's fault. These things happen and it hurts and it sucks, but it's not anyone's fault... Especially not yours, okay..?"
The greenette just shook, looking smaller than Katsuki ever remembers. He sighed, pressing his nose into Izuku's hair. "It'll be okay, Deku... You'll get through this..."
~
Once Izuku was fed and put back to sleep, Katsuki left. Said a quick goodbye to his mate and walked out. He knew exactly where he was headed and what he needed to do.
Rei Todoroki answered the door fairly quickly after he'd knocked.
"Oh! Bakugou! I thought you were in America?"
"I was. Had a family emergency, so I came back."
"Family emergency..? Hope it's not bad. It seems to be going around."
"Yeah, I heard," he grumbled, looking over her head. "Is your kid here?"
Rei blinked and tilted her head, then stepped aside. "Yeah... He's out in the back. I'll let him know-"
"Don't bother..." He huffed and walked passed, not bothering to remove his shoes.
He walked straight through the house, hardly noticing Enji Todoroki. He slammed open the back door, growling as soon as he spotted the duel-quirk user. "Hey! Fuck-face!"
Shouto furrowed his brows and turned. "Bakugou-"
Katsuki stormed right up to him and swung his fist, satisfied with the way Shouto stumbled and jerked his head back.
"What- what the hell is wrong with you!?" Shouto snapped, grabbing his jaw and returning Katsuki's glare. "What the fuck-"
"What's wrong with me!? What's wrong with you!?" Katsuki jabbed a finger at the taller, snarling. "What the actual fuck is wrong with you!?"
Shouto clenched his jaw and winced at the flare of pain it caused. "You don't understand, Bakugou..."
The blond huffed and nodded, squaring his shoulders. "You're right. I don't understand. I don't have pups, can't have pups, nor do I want any of the little fuckers. I don't know and I won't know what losing one feels like, but how in God's name could you blame your own Goddamn mate for something that was out of his control!?"
"Out of his control?" Shouto echoed with a scoff. "Right. He knew how dangerous using his quirk was for the pup. He knew he risked killing the pup by using his quirk and he did it anyway."
Katsuki blinked slowly a few times. He stared at the taller for several seconds. He chuckled softly. Slowly, he evolved into full-blown laughter.
Shouto reeled back, shocked by such a reaction.
The blond ran his hands through his hair. "Wow... Wow, oh my God. Holy shit, this is too fuckin' great. Do you ever open your fucking ears?" The last sentence was a hiss - an accusation.
"What are you talking about?" Shouto scowled, steeling himself as Katsuki growled again.
"You fucking moron. You don't even know what happened."
"There was an attack, Bakugou. He fought the villain-"
"Who said that?"
Shouto paused. He stared at the blond who now had an unreadable expression. Strange. He was always so easy to read.
Katsuki rolled his eyes. "Did you ever ask him what happened? Ask pink-cheeks or Eijirou - the people that were there - what happened? Have you not seen the fucking news? It's everywhere, jackass. The entire thing. God... Fuck- this is shit we'd expect from me... You're supposed to be the good guy - the loving, supportive mate. You're supposed to be there for your mate. But, the going got hard and you bailed. You blamed him and ran. You told him that he killed that pup... God- what kind of a fucking mate are you?"
The younger couldn't speak. He didn't know what to say. He's partially not understanding what Katsuki was saying, but guilt bloomed in his gut, wrenching inside him.
"I get it... You and Deku tried so damn hard to get pregnant. Two years. That's a long while to try. Even started fertility treatments... But don't forget that you played a very small part in the making of that pup, half 'n' half." Katsuki stuck his hands in his pockets. "He went through the treatments. He provided the space, the care, the nutrients for the pup. He was the one carrying that life inside of him. He was the one providing for the pup. That life got ripped from him. He was the one who lost the life he nurtured. He had felt that life and bonded with it stronger than you ever could, and it was taken from him. Yes, you suffered a loss, too... But it's nothing compared to what he's suffering. And now, thanks to you, he's not only grieving for the pup, he's blaming himself and he's grieving you. He feels like he's lost you, too..."
Silence fell over them, Katsuki looking away. He sighed, shoulders drooping just slightly. "You know... I remember you saying you didn't want to be as bad as your father used to be... Well... Congratulations... You're worse. Off to a hell of a start..."
Shouto winced at the sharp words, even if they were spoken softly. Katsuki sounded more disappointed than angry, and he left as soon as he finished.
He stood there long after Katsuki left, neither of his parents approaching him.
Finally, he steeled himself once again and went inside. He grabbed his phone and searched. He clicked on an article from the day after the attack.
'Breaking News : Pro-Hero Deku lost his pup while protecting another!'
'Just yesterday at XX mall, a villain attacked. The day started out normal and quiet, and no one had realized the Beacon of Hope had been there with friends. He'd announced weeks earlier with mate, Pro-Hero Shouto, that he'd be on hiatus due to a long-awaited pregnancy.
'During the attack, as you can see from the footage captured, a pup was left terrified, trapped, and alone. The villain was ruthless in his attacks, destroying anything in sight. This included the pup.
'Pro-Hero Deku ran in with Pro-Heroes Red Riot and Uravity, all three having been on scene. Pro-Hero Deku shielded the child from attack and recieved a harsh blow, which we discovered just early this morning, lead to the loss of his and Pro-Hero Shouto's pup-to-be-'
Shouto stopped reading - nearly unable to read more with the tears in his eyes. He scrolled down and stared at the videos provided. All at different angles with varying video quality. He hesitated before clicking play on the second video.
The video started with the focus on the villain. The sounds were garbled and he could only understand the woman taking the video. She suddenly jerked her phone to the side-
"Oh my God, look! It's Deku and Red Riot!" She shouted excitedly.
Izuku was running, cap having been flung off during his sprint. He looked to be in panic and he was pulling ahead of Eijirou and Ochako quickly - much faster than the other heroes.
People were shouting, wondering what he was running towards as he leapt over debris.
He wasn't using his quirk. There was no lightening, no black whips - he wasn't boosting himself at all.
Shouto heard the distant wail of the pup before the woman had turned the camera to them.
The pup was trapped. Its arm was stuck and there was no one else nearby. The villain charged closer to it, not even noticing the frantic pup or even Izuku. He was focused on shouting to the cameras.
Izuku grabbed the debris, clearly talking to the pup and trying to calm them down. Eijirou finally caught up and used his quirk to pry the debris off. Izuku grabbed the pup, holding them close and already turning to run away.
That's when the villain noticed them. Civllians were pointing and shouting, paying more attention to the Heroes and the pup than to him. He snarled and lashed out.
Izuku saw the attack and twisted, shielding the pup and... And craddling his own abdomen. He knew he couldn't outrun it, so he shielded them both as best as he could.
Eijirou was running, but he wasn't fast enough. Shouto flinched as he saw the attack hit his mate full force, throwing him across the floor. He heard Izuku scream in pain, crashing into a pillar.
He was still covering the pup and his own abdomen. He was still trying so hard to protect both.
Civilians screamed, the video shaking in panic as the woman taking it was pushed, everyone trying to run out - to run away.
The video cut out and Shouto let his phone slip from his hand.
~
Tenya sat in his chair, scrolling through his phone. Ochako and Katsuki sat on the couch opposite of him, Izuku curled up between them. The pile on the couch was far-more nest-like than it had been previously. Izuku made it so there was room for his friends to fit comfortably in it with him. He curled up into Katsuki's side, Ochako leaning on him and holding his hand.
It's now day four and Tenya isn't sure if his friend is ever going to recover.
The apartment door opened and closed quickly, Eijirou coming in. He looked... Strained and unsure. Tenya tilted his head in silent question as he met Eijirou's eyes.
Slowly, the Beta exhaled and made his way to the Omegas and his mate. He kissed Katsuki's head before crouching in front of the greenette, gaining his attention. "Hey, you," he whispered, rubbing his knee. "How're you feeling..?"
"I don't know," The Omega croaked, but it was a real answer. Actual words instead of broken sobs.
Eijirou hummed. "You have a visitor... But you absolutely don't have to see him if you don't want to. Say the word and I'll kick him to the curb..."
Izuku sniffed and rubbed his nose. He sat up slowly, pulling one of the blankets tighter around his shoulders. "It's okay... I don't mind..."
"Are you sure..?" Eijirou bit his lip, gently squeezing Izuku's knee.
The Omega nodded. "Yeah... You can let them in..."
Eijirou looked like he wanted to ask again, but gave in. He stood, gently pet back Izuku's hair, then made his way back to the apartment door.
Everyone had their eyes on him. Tenya stiffened as Eijirou opened the door, being the only one able to see the visitor at his angle. He wasn't sure this was a good idea. It definitely isn't a good idea. This could go terribly. Izuku could be set back.
However, Eijirou stepped aside and let him in.
Izuku inhaled sharply, gripping the blanket as he met eyes with his mate.
Katsuki growled and jumped to his feet, Ochako pulling Izuku into her chest and shielding him.
Shouto swallowed, fingers flexing. His mate's distress drenched the room. It surrounded him, setting him on edge as well as the other two Alphas blocking him from his mate.
"I just... Can I see him..?"
"No," Katsuki snapped back immediately.
Shouto stepped forward, hesitating as Tenya stood and growled in warning. "Can I just... Can I please see my mate..? I need to talk to him."
"You don't need jack-shit-!" The blond hissed, pausing as Izuku tugged on the back of his shirt. Katsuki turned quickly. "What? Do you want him out? I'll kick him out- hell, I'll light his ass on fire-"
"Don't..." Izuku's voice was so meek. "I'll... I'll talk to him..."
Katsuki's jaw tensed, clearly not okay with it, but nodded. He waved to Ochako.
She hesitated, still holding Izuku. She pursed her lips, then whispered to the greenette before getting up. They all went into the kitchen, giving Izuku and Shouto privacy while still staying close enough they can jump in if need-be.
Izuku looked away. He couldn't look at Shouto. God, what had he done..?
The Alpha pursed his lips and slowly made his way over. "'Zuku..."
The greenette whimpered, already beginning to tremble, tears welling up in his eyes.
Fuck, he really is a shitty mate.
Shouto dropped to his knees in front of Izuku, shaky hands reaching to him. "'Zuku, I... I'm so sorry... I'm sorry- fuck-" Tears stung his eyes, fists falling into Izuku's lap. "I didn't... I should have never blamed you, 'Zuku... It's not your fault..."
The Omega sobbed, rubbing at the tears already cascading down his pale cheeks.
"You were so brave," Shouto murmured, cupping Izuku's face and gently wiping away his tears. He smiled weakly as green eyes met his. "You ran in to save that pup without your quirk... They're okay because of you..."
"B-but our pup..." Izuku hiccuped, hands daring to reach for his abdomen.
"You did your best to protect them..." He stroked Izuku's hair back. "But you were hurt pretty bad... And that isn't your fault."
The Omega devolved into sobs, body shaking terribly with each one. He released the blanket in favor of reaching for his mate. Shouto got up, wrapping his arms tightly around Izuku.
Izuku pressed into his scent gland, fingers curling tight into his shirt. He clung to him desperately, as if afraid he'd leave again.
Really, Shouto doesn't blame him. He's been a terrible mate for Izuku.
He sat slowly and carefully in the nest, rocking back and forth. He stroked Izuku's hair, breathing in his scent, still soured by distress.
"Do you want to go back home..?"
Izuku hiccuped again, nodding slowly. "C-can I bring my nest..?"
Shouto hummed and kissed his head. "Of course..."
~
Katsuki didn't like that Izuku was going back to living with Shouto and stopped by regularly to check in.
Izuku couldn't return to work right away, body still healing. He didn't think he could work anyway with his current state of mind.
Days went by slowly, the Omega lacking the motivation to do anything. He'd be fine one moment, walking around, trying to do something, then the next moment he'd be breaking down, sobbing and gasping for breath.
Shouto would rush to him, grab him and hold him close. He'd rock slowly, surround Izuku with his calming scent and murmur to him. If Katsuki was there, or Eijirou, they would grab Izuku's face and talk to him. They'd wrap a blanket around him, hug him and stay there until he calmed down.
Ochako visited sometimes with Tenya. When they came by, they'd just sit on the sofa with Izuku, letting him lean on them.
He was very slowly starting to get better. Once he got into grief counseling, he began really healing.
It was probably a month and a half before he was cleared for work and another week before he himself felt he was okay enough.
Shouto held his hand as they drove to the agency, parking behind the building. He guided Izuku inside, the Omega trying to wave him off and assure him he's fine. They went into the locker room, changing into their hero uniforms.
Once dressed, Izuku frowned down at himself.
"What is it..?"
"It's... It's loose... My uniform..."
Shouto sighed softly and rubbed his shoulders. "It's okay, 'Zuku... I can't hardly tell. I didn't until you pointed it out." He kissed Izuku's head.
Izuku tugged on the sleeve, looking at himself in the mirror. He supposed it didn't really look as loose as it felt. Maybe he was imagining it. Maybe it's just been that long since he last wore the uniform.
He took a deep breath and looked up to his mate. "Okay... Let's go."
The Alpha placed a second kiss on his head for good measure, earning a little smile.
Izuku took his hand and they walked out together. As they stepped into the lobby, Izuku froze, eyes widening as he saw all the people.
"There he is!"
"Hero Deku!"
"Oh my God, he's really back!"
Cameras flashed and he flinched at the light, startled so many people were there. Questions were thrown at him. How's he feeling? Is he okay? Is he sure he's ready for hero work after such a traumatic loss?
He's so overwhelmed, beginning to back up when he caught wiff of a familiar scent. Izuku perked up and searched through the crowd, releasing Shouto as his Alpha began to usher him away.
The reporters and cameramen quieted and made way for him as he pushed through, still recording and taking pictures.
Izuku made his way to the back and halted.
That's the pup. That's the pup he saved. She had a cast on her arm, but appeared okay otherwise. Tears already began to sting his eyes as he knelt in front of her.
"I'd recognize you anywhere..."
She blushed, good hand twisting in the skirt of her dress. Her father knelt behind her, holding her shoulders. "I... I wanted to thank you," she whispered, so shy.
"Me too... She's all I have left, Deku," her father muttered, eyes watery and smile grateful. "And I'm... I'm so, so sorry for what you lost to save my pup..."
Izuku's lip trembled and he reached up to stroke the girl's hair back. He cupped her face. "I'm so happy you're okay, Aiko..."
Aiko perked up, eyes big. "You remember my name?"
The Omega laughed softly. "Of course I do. You were so brave that day, how could I forget?"
She squeaked and threw her arm around him, clinging tightly. Her peachy, milky scent set him at ease as he wrapped her in his arms and held her close. He swayed slowly, nearly forgetting the people around them.
"You're okay, Aiko... That's what matters to me..."
~
The interaction was everywhere the next day. All over the news channels, in just about every online article - and it wasn't just Japan. The whole world was talking about Pro-Hero Deku.
Izuku wasn't sure how he felt about his miscarriage getting all this publicity. Everywhere he went, people were asking him if he's okay, if he'll remember the pup forever. People are asking him how he got through it, and he's honestly not sure.
Just maybe... Maybe if he could stop being asked about it, maybe it'll help him move passed it better.
~
"Yes, Kacchan, I know," Izuku sighed, phone tucked between his shoulder and ear as he put up the decorations. "Yes, I- I can decorate! I'm literally- you are very distracting! If you didn't want me to decorate your place for Kiri, then why'd you ask me to do it! ... Well, you're definitely not- oh, someone's at the door. I gotta go, bye!" He quickly hung up before Katsuki could yell at him anymore and jogged to the door. He grinned as he opened it. "Hey guys!"
Denki laughed, holding up beer and an arm slung around Kyoka. "Hey, Midoriya!"
Izuku giggled and let them in, laughing as Hanta swung in. "Better be glad that Kacchan isn't here to see that."
"I'll tell him," Mina mused as she walked in, holding a few gifts. Izuku took some from her and walked to the living area with her. "The place looks great."
"Really? Thanks, good luck telling Kacchan that. I'm almost done," he huffed, folding his arms.
Mina laughed and waved. "We'll help finish it up."
~
Izuku sat on the sofa, letting a heavily pregnant Ochako lean on him. Seeing her pregnant hurt, knowing that he should be holding his own pup right now, but he did his best to support her. It's been over a year since his loss. A year, four months, and seven days to be exact, not that he's counting.
Poor Ochako had been so nervous to tell him and his mate of her pregnancy. When she told them, Izuku thought he was going to break all over again. He toughed out the best smile he could and embraced her, congratulating her and Tenya. He wouldn't ruin their happiness when they supported him through the hardest thing he'd ever had to go through. They were his best friends and he truly was happy for them.
He just still... Hurt...
The party was loud, only because of the people attending(Denki and Mina).
The living area was full, old classmates and new friends excited to celebrate Eijirou's twenty-eighth birthday.
Izuku was proud of himself for putting this party together. It looked good, people were enjoying themselves - he just wished he wasn't feeling so under the weather.
He'd been feeling kinda queazy and nauseous all week, frequent headaches plaguing him.
Thankfully, he had Ochako to keep him company while everyone else had their fun.
"We're thinking maybe Sakura," Ochako hummed happily, hands on her belly. "We both really like flowery names for a girl, we're just having a hard time finding one we actually want to use."
Izuku chuckled, shifting. "Names are hard in general... A lot of people wait until the pup is born, then name them. Some have to wait to meet the pup so then the name will come to them."
"Oh, no," Ochako laughed, resting her head on his shoulder. "No, no. Tenya and I are not those kind of people. We'd just stare at her and say, 'well, what now?'"
They both shared a laugh before the scent of meat cooking made Izuku's stomach churn. He hunched forward with a gasp, clutching his stomach.
"Deku?"
"I-I'm gonna throw up-" he leapt to his feet and dashed to the bathroom, just barely making it to the toilet to vomit the contents of his stomach into the bowl. He heaved and gasped, coughing and trying to spit out the foul taste.
"Hey, whoa..."
Katsuki's familiar scent wafted over him as the Alpha knelt beside him and rubbed his back. "How much have you had to drink, nerd?"
Izuku whined, staying over the toilet just in case. "I didn't drink anything..." He spit once again, grabbing a nearby towel to wipe off his chin and sat back. "God... I'm sorry, I didn't think I was so sick..."
Katsuki hummed, pulling his hand back. "Go on home if you aren't feeling well, dumbass."
"But I promised I'd help clean up..."
"Don't worry about it. You set it up, the extras can take it down."
Izuku sighed, resting back against the wall. "Well... I need something to get the taste out of my mouth before I puke again..."
Katsuki chuckled and stood. He offered his hand and Izuku gratefully took it. Ochako stood outside the bathroom, worry etched into her expression.
"I'm okay, Chako," Izuku smiled at her. "Just not feeling great... I'm gonna head home."
The brunette sighed and nodded. "Okay. Be safe."
Katsuku followed Izuku to the kitchen, pacing ahead to make him a small plate of food. When he turned, he saw Izuku looking pale again, hands over his mouth and nose.
"Hey, you okay?" Eijirou swept in, hand on the Omega's shoulder.
Izuku nodded slowly, breathing deeply. "Yeah, sorry... The meat- God, it's making me nauseous..."
Eijirou blinked, then he and Katsuki shared a glance. "Oh, okay. Are you headed home, then?" He started ushering Izuku towards the door, Katsuki behind with the plate.
"Yes, I'm sorry. I wanted to stay for the whole party, but I can't be much fun puking everywhere," he mused, relaxing as he got away from the smell of the meat.
Katsuki held the plate up and opened the door. "Text me when you get home, nerd. Be safe."
Izuku smiled, taking the plate. "Thank you. I'll be just fine, Kacchan. Happy Birthday, Kiri."
Eijirou chuckled and nodded. "Thanks for coming. Hope you feel better soon."
The greenette laughed and nodded, waving as he walked away.
Katsuki grit his teeth, eyes meeting his mate's for a brief moment.
Eijirou took his hand. "He'll be okay..."
"It hasn't been that long, Eij."
"It's been over a year."
"That doesn't mean he's ready," Katsuki huffed, closing the door.
The Beta sighed and looked down. "We just... We can be there for him, okay..? Help support him as best as we can..."
Katsuki breathed deeply, squeezing Eijirou's hand. "Yeah..."
~
Izuku groaned softly, sinking into his nest. He curled up within it, clutching his abdomen. He had eaten some of the food Katsuki had given him, but he was worried that if he ate anymore, he'd just throw it up.
His nausea was coming and going in waves, but being surrounded by his mate's and friend's scents, he began to settle and relax. Izuku closed his eyes, hugging Shouto's pillow tightly.
He'd dozed off before he realized it, waking when his mate entered the room.
The Omega crooned tiredly, reaching for Shouto.
The Alpha chuckled and crawled into the nest, pulling his mate into his chest. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you..."
"It's okay," Izuku whispered, fingers curling into Shouto's shirt. "I meant to stay up until you got home..."
Shouto hummed, rubbing his back. "Get some rest, love..."
It didn't take long at all for Izuku to fall back asleep.
When he woke again, the sun was streaming in through his window. His Alpha was still fast asleep, arm draped over Izuku's midde.
The Omega smiled and slowly pushed himself up and out of bed. As soon as he stood, he swayed and held his churning abdomen. With a lurch, he bolted to the bathroom and dropped in front of the toilet again, spewing up next-to nothing. He coughed and trembled, dry-heaving over the toilet when Shouto hurried in.
Shouto rubbed his back, kneeling behind him. When Izuku slumped over with a whimper, Shouto sat back against the nearest wall, pulling his mate into his chest. Izuku curled up and he swayed slowly. "There... I'll just tell everyone you can't come in today..."
Izuku whined, tugging on him. "No... No, I need to work... What if something bad happens..?"
"You're sick, 'Zuku..."
The Omega sighed, looking away. This gave him a strange, heavy sense of deja vú. Curled up in Shouto's arms after serious morning sickness-
Izuku bolted straight up, eyes wide. Shouto startled, blinking a few times before reaching for his mate. "Izuku?"
He looked around, scent souring in distress as he began breathing heavily, tears in his eyes. "No no... No no no..." He stood quickly, biting into his nails and hunching his shoulders in.
Shouto pushed himself to his feet, grabbing Izuku's arms and rubbing up and down, trying to ground him. "Izuku, look at me. What is it? What's the matter..?"
However, it was as if Izuku didn't hear him. He looked around in panic, eyes wide and watery, body already beginning to tremble. Shouto grabbed his face, forcing eye contact.
Izuku gasped, lip trembling.
Shouto frowned deeply, brows furrowed. "Izuku... What is wrong? Talk to me, please..."
The Omega whimpered, grabbing onto him. "H-hospital," he stuttered, his tears slipping down his cheeks. "Hospital, please... Take me to the hospital, now..."
~
Izuku ran into the hospital, barely giving Shouto time to fully park the car.
"Fuck-" he hissed, grabbing his keys and locking the car before running after him.
Izuku was in such a rush, he didn't have any kind of a civilian disguise on. Everyone in the waiting room and the nurses behind the desk gawked at him as he hit the counter, panting. "I need to see the doctor, it's an emergency!"
The nurse he'd stopped in front of stared at him for a few seconds before jumping into work. "What is the problem today, sir?"
"Please, I just- I need to get some tests done, I can't-"
"Midoriya?"
Izuku snapped his head up as his name was called and rushed over. "Dr. Ito, I'm so sorry to come barging in like this, but I really need your help, I need some tests and-"
"Who, settle down, Midoriya." The Doctor grabbed Izuku's shoulders and looked passed him to Shouto for just a moment. "I have some time. Come on, let's get you in." He waved to a nurse and lead Izuku further into the hospital.
The Omega was jittery, wringing his hands together and gaze flickering about, even as he was sat on a hospital bed.
Shouto stood at the end of the bed as the doctor worked, still so confused.
Ito didn't speak, as if understanding what was going through Izuku's mind. "I'll run some tests. In the mean time, just sit back and relax, okay..?"
Izuku nodded slowly, but didn't move otherwise.
Shouto slowly sat on the bed beside him. "Izuku... What's the matter..?"
The greenette pursed his lips, hands balled up in his lap. "I'm scared..."
"Why are you scared..?" He reached over and took his mate's hand. Izuku squeezed tightly.
Izuku didn't speak again.
It felt like hours dragged by before Ito came back in. He was alone, holding a clipboard. He breathed deeply. "Midoriya... I have the results from your tests."
The Omega gulped, looking up at him. It looked like he didn't want to hear it.
"I ran the tests again to be sure... And we can even get an ultrasound to see... But you are pregnant."
Shouto froze, Izuku tensing beside him.
Ito pulled over a cart from the corner. "Would you like an ultrasound..? To see for yourself?"
"Yes..." The word was so forced. He was in shock- maybe a but of disbelief. He was mechanical as he lay back on the bed, Shouto moving away so the doctor could get to him.
Izuku flinched with the gel touching his abdomen, shaky fingers holding his shirt up just enough as he stared at the ceiling.
Shouto stared. He was still processing, still trying to figure out how or when he got his mate pregnant. They've been so careful not to.
"There they are..." Ito murmured and pressed something on the monitor. Izuku's breath caught as he heard the heart beat. "Looks like you're roughly eight to ten weeks along."
Izuku whimpered, covering his eyes. Shouto swallowed hard, curling his fingers into the sheets.
Ito breathed deeply, getting some pictures of the ultrasound. He pulled the machine away and cleaned off Izuku's abdomen. "I'm going to print off these pictures for you two... I'll leave you be. Just let us know when you're ready to go." He bowed, grabbing the clipboard before leaving them alone.
Both were still and silent. Shouto's throat ran dry and he couldn't find the words to say. Does he say sorry? Is he supposed to be happy for this pup?
A gut-wrenching sob tore from Izuku and he curled up onto his side, back facing Shouto. The Alpha immediately moved closer, releasing the most calming scent he could and crooned to his mate.
"Oh God... Oh God, I can't..." He hiccuped, gripping the sheets, eyes pinched shut.
"We'll figure this out," Shouto whispered, rubbing his shoulder and kissing his head. "It'll be okay..."
"No it won't!" Shouto jerked back, hairs raised from the intense distress bursting from his mate. "I-I was just- I just had that fight- oh my God- I could have hurt the pup! I got injured! I could have hurt the pup and not even known! Oh my God!" Izuku heaved for breath, tears streaking his cheeks relentlessly. He clutched his abdomen tightly. "I'm going to kill this pup, too!"
Shouto clenched his jaw, eyes stinging. He shifted to lay on the bed beside his mate, gathering him close. Izuku trembled and sobbed, letting Shouto pull him in.
"No you won't... You didn't kill our last pup and you won't kill this one," he murmured into Izuku's hair, grabbing one of his hands. He moved their hands down to Izuku's abdomen and closed his eyes. "This pup will be just fine, Izuku..."
"Y-you don't know that..."
The Alpha sighed, gently squeezing him. "We will do our very best to ensure it... The doctor didn't seem too concerned about the pup's health so far, so that must be a good sign... Let's just... Let's both of us take just a little break... A little weekend getaway and just... Mentally and emotionally prepare for this... Can we do that..?"
Izuku sniffed and pursed his lips. He was quiet for a few moments, then nodded slowly.
"Okay..." Shouto closed his eyes. "Now, whenever you're ready... We'll get up and head home..."
~
"So he's pregnant again..?"
Shouto hummed, fiddling his thumbs and staring down at the floor. "Yeah... We found out last week..."
The woman across from him nodded, notebook and pen in hand. "How are you both feeling about it? I know it's unexpected."
He sighed and leaning back on the sofa. "I... I want this pup, obviously... We tried so hard for a long time, even started treatments, then lost that pup... Home didn't feel like home anymore... We didn't want to start trying, and we didn't ever talk about trying. As far as I knew, we weren't planning on ever trying again... But now, he's pregnant... He's about... The doctor said eight to ten so now he's nine to eleven weeks. He didn't get pregnant during heat, so we don't really know how... It was a fluke... A miracle... Terrible timing... We're both still struggling with the grief of our first pup..."
His therapist nodded slowly, listening carefully. "That's normal... It hasn't been a full year and a half and you find out he's already more than two months pregnant. I know several couples who grieve miscarriages for several years after the loss. It's normal, but healthy coping mechanisms are a must. We've talked about you a lot and how you cope. I understand that for a while, Izuku had counseling? How is he doing now? How is he taking the news of the pregnancy?"
Shouto swallowed and licked his lips. "He's... Not well... I... I think what I said back then still affects him. When we found out, he said... He said he was going to kill the pup..." He rubbed his hands together.
She breathed deeply. "In a threatening way, or..?"
The Alpha shook his head, brows furrowed. "No, no, of course not. Izuku would never... I... I told you that I... I had blamed him for our loss. I told him he had killed the pup before he even knew they were gone... I think he stills holds onto that and is scared the same thing is going to happen... He's already starting to blame himself for something that hasn't happened and is back to blaming himself for the... The miscarriage..."
"Right..." She crossed her legs, clicking her pen but not writing anything. "I imagine this pregnancy is going to be very emotionally and mentally draining for him... Scared that he'll lose another pup, scared of both of you being hurt by a second loss so soon..." She was quiet and careful as she spoke.
Shouto nodded, looking out the window. "I'm scared, too... So damn scared... I hate it... The first pup- we were so excited... Thrilled and ready to jump in to be parents. We looked at cribs, his mother started making a blanket, we started a name list... But now... It's the complete opposite for this pup. We're coming in terrified. We don't know what to do, no one else knows, he doesn't want to talk about it..."
She hummed, clicking the pen again. "I don't think either of you will fully get over the loss of your first pup. It was extrodinarily traumatic, especially for him. I honestly... I don't think either of you can be happy or excited for this pup until they are finally born, alive and healthy. I believe that may be the only way to start putting the loss behind you - especially Izuku. No, neither of you will ever forget the loss, but it won't be so prevalent. Just do your best to love and support your mate. This pregnancy will take its toll on both of you..."
~
Izuku paced back and forth, chewing on his lip with his phone pressed to his ear. "Pick up, pick up," he chanted softly, tears pricking his eyes.
Finally, the connection clicked. "Deku? I'm heading in for a shift, what do you want?"
"Oh, God," Izuku whimpered, sinking to his knees. "Fuck, I- I'm sorry... I shouldn't- sorry, I'll leave you alone-"
"Whoa, hey!" Katsuki shouted into his phone. "Deku, what's wrong? What happened- are you okay? Are you safe?"
Izuku sniffled, rubbing his cheek. "I'm at home..."
"Is icyhot with you?"
"He's at his appointment..."
"Do you need something? Do you need someone with you?"
The Omega pursed his lips, leaning against the wall. "I can't... I can't be alone, Kacchan... I'm scared..."
Katsuki sighed softly. "Eijirou is off today. I'll send him over. Is that okay?"
Izuku nodded, then realized the blond couldn't see him. "Yes... Thank you..."
"Of course..."
It didn't take long before Eijirou was knocking on his door. When Izuku answered, he was bundled in one of Shouto's jackets and a blanket that had a combination of scents on it.
Eijirou was quickly dragged to the sofa and nuzzled into. The Beta hummed and wrapped Izuku in his arms, rubbing his back. "Are you okay..?"
Izuku was quiet, still adjusting the blanket over the both of them. He settled and curled up tighter, resting his head on the redhead's shoulder. He breathed deeply. "I don't know... I want to be... This... This should be a good thing, but I'm just... I'm so scared, Kiri..."
The Beta hummed, rubbing his shoulder. "I can understand that... Last year was so hard on you two. Now, with this new development, you two aren't sure how to move forward..."
"How did you and Kacchan figure out I was pregnant before I did..?" Izuku asked, tugging the blanket tighter around his shoulders.
Eijirou chuckled. "You were in and out of a sick spell, you got nauseous at the smell of cooking meat, you're surrounding yourself in familiar scents- your scent is even starting to change like it did last time."
The Omega hummed. "I guess Shouto and I didn't want to see it... So we didn't... We haven't at all talked about trying again, so this... So soon... I just don't know what to do..." He sighed, closing his eyes and breathing in the redhead's soft, earthy scent.
"Well, you know Katsuki and I will always be here for you... You and Todoroki are family..." Eijirou squeezed Izuku's shoulders, resting his cheek against Izuku's head. "All you have to do is give us a call..."
Izuku nodded, shifting again. He settled comfortably into Eijirou's side, curled up and warm. "Thank you for coming..."
"Of course... I had zero plans for the day. All I was gonna do was nap until Katsuki came home."
The Omega laughed softly. "Sounds like a good day..."
Eijirou grinned. "Oh, it was going to be glorious, Mido. I was going to be as unproductive as possible, get yelled at for being nonproductive, kiss him, immediately be forgiven, then cuddled and right back to being very unproductive." He sighed almost wistfully, relaxing as the Omega laughed more.
Both were finally relaxed, easing into a comfortable silence until Shouto got home. Eijirou was hesitant to hand his friend over, but said his goodbyes.
~
Izuku wrung his hands together, peering out the sliver between the curtains to all the reporters and cameramen outside. His herosuit felt tighter than ever, the room feeling small and dark.
"Hey..." Shouto's warm hand was placed gently on the small of his back and he looked up to his mate. "We can do this. I can do all the talking if you want me to..."
The greenette breathed deeply, looking back out the window. "I just... I just feel like we're jinxing it... We told the media last time, and... Oh, God... I just- don't know- maybe this wasn't a good idea, I don't think I can do it-"
Shouto grabbed his face and pressed their foreheads together, releasing his scent for his mate. "Izuku... If you're not sure, I can go out there by myself," he offered, speaking in a whisper.
Izuku swallowed, taking Shouto's hands. "No, I... I can do it..."
His Alpha sighed and nodded, kissing his head.
They walked out hand-in-hand. The lights started flashing and Izuku's nerves spiked. He reached up to his neck, touching the scent blockers to make sure they were still there. He didn't want the reporters catching on to his distress so quickly.
"Thank you all for coming today," Shouto spoke into the microphones on the podium, the only other sounds in the large room being the camera flashes. "We have an announcement to make. It may come as a shock, believe me, it was for us as well. We weren't expecting this development, especially so... So soon..." Shouto breathed deeply, looking down to Izuku as his mate hugged his arm tightly. He licked his lips and looked back up. "We would like to respectfully ask for some space and time at the moment as Hero Deku and I are expecting a pup."
The reporters lurched into action, shouting questions and asking for more statements. Izuku flinched, most questions thrown at him.
"So soon?"
"Are you sure?"
"When are you due?"
"Are you going on another hiatus for this pup?"
"Are you excited for this new pup, Deku?"
And so many more. His head spun and he gasped for breath.
Shouto pulled him back and Katsuki leapt up to the podium.
"Alright, alright! Everyone shut the fuck up! You have your fuckin' story!" He continued shouting as Shouto lead Izuku away, shielding him from the camera flashed and holding him close.
"It's okay," Shouto murmured into Izuku's hair. "It'll be okay..."
~
Shouto woke to an empty nest the next morning. He sat up with a yawn and stretched. He looked around, groaning at the time. His alarm would blare in about three minutes. He leaned over to turn off the alarm before climbing out of bed - very careful not to disturb Izuku's nest.
He ran his fingers through his hair, purring and smiling as the smell of breakfast reached him. An undertone of distress set him on edge and he hurried to the kitchen.
Izuku stood in the kitchen, tears in his eyes and blank-faced as he stared at the television in the living area.
The Alpha grit his teeth, seeing pictures of them from the day before at the press conference and quickly turned it off.
The Omega jolted, not even having realized Shouto was out. "Sh-Shou..."
"Don't listen to it. Whatever they're saying, ignore it." He made his way over to his mate and grabbed his shoulders.
Izuku's lip trembled, tears finally spilling over. "They're saying that I don't want this pup... That I won't be able to handle this..." He whimpered and began rubbing at his eyes.
Shouto scowled, pulling his mate to his chest. "Izuku..."
"They kept saying that I'm not ready for a pup so soon, based on how I was at the conference... Everyone keeps saying it was an accident... It wasn't supposed to happen..."
The duel quirk user breathed deeply, swaying slowly and rubbing his back.
Izuku finally sobbed, weight collapsing onto Shouto's chest. "I'm scared! I'm scared, but I want my pup! I want to be ready!"
Shouto kissed his head, holding him tight. "I want this pup, too... We'll prepare as much as we can, 'Zuku..."
~
Izuku shifted nervously, laying back on the hospital bed. He held Shouto's hand tightly, glancing from the door to the ceiling and back.
"Izuku, he'll be in here soon..."
The Omega whined softly. "I know, I know... I just- I just want to make sure the pup is okay..."
Shouto raised his hand and kissed his knuckles. "Izuku, I'm sure everything is fine."
"You can't know that."
"And you can't know if it's not."
Izuku huffed and looked away.
The door open and Izuku perked up.
Ito smiled at them, holding his clipboard. "Good to see you two in. Excited about the twelve week mark?"
"I just want to make sure they're okay, Doctor..." Izuku muttered, hand on his lower abdomen.
The doctor nodded, pulling over the cart. "Of course, Midoriya. Let's get some pictures of the little one."
Izuku breathed deeply, pulling his shirt up just enough. He winced at the cold jelly, turning his eyes to the screen as the wand moved across his belly.
"There- there! Is that them!? That's my pup, right?" Izuku jerked his arm up, pointing at the screen.
Ito smiled and nodded, stilling the wand. "Yes, Midoriya. That's your healthy looking pup. They're growing well."
A smile slowly stretched across Izuku's face and his body steadily relaxed. "They're doing good?"
The doctor nodded, eyes on the screen. "They're growing normally, their heartbeat is strong, you're in good health which does help... Overall, I'm very pleased with the state you two are in. Keep up the good work. I'm gonna print off some pictures for you two."
Izuku squeezed Shouto's hand. "Thank you, Doctor..." His voice was soft as he kept his eyes glued on the screen.
Shouto brushed his thumb gently over Izuku's knuckles, smiling softly as he watched his mate smile genuinely for what feels like the first time in a very long time.
~
Izuku walked around their apartment with his hand always on his lower abdomen. He kept touching and rubbing, as if to make sure the pup was still in there. When sitting or laying, his palm would rest flat and when Shouto first noticed he thought it looked like Izuku was trying to hold the pup in.
Also, he practically refuses to leave the apartment. Hardly steps outside. He stays holed up inside, creating his nests(making the one in their bed larger, made one on the sofa and made a third in the corner of the living area).
He only willingly left for doctors appointments(which he requested more than plenty of). He had to be convinced to go out and shop for the pup and even then he'd only go if Shouto was with, or Katsuki.
Katsuki hated shopping for the pup, but allowed himself to be dragged along by his mate and Ochako for Izuku's sake.
"Oh my God! Shut up!" Katsuki snapped and snatched the clothing out of Eijirou's and Ochako's hands, startling the other three, Izuku nearly trapped between them. "You shits are terrible at picking out clothes! Pink cheeks, if you think something's cute, get it for your own damn pup! I'm gonna be around Deku's pup for fuck knows how long, so this brat is going to be dressed like a fuckin' star! It ain't gonna have your shitty style! Go pick a fucking crib, I'll get its Goddamn clothes!"
The other three stared at him, all eyes big. He snapped his jaws and Ochako and Eijirou scrambled away, Izuku being dragged along.
Izuku whined softly, swatting his friends off. "Okay, okay! You can let me go!"
Eijirou was pouting when he released the greenette, Ochako holding her very swollen belly. Izuku swears she's due any day now. "He didn't even want to come, now he gets to pick out the pup's entire wardrobe. I got a little carried away maybe, but I won't ever get to shop for my own."
Ochako huffed. "And I just want you to have what you want, Izuku."
The greenette shrugged, looking down. "Well, I don't really mind if someone else gets the pup clothes... As long as they have them, it's fine..." He looked around to the cribs and bassinets on display, one hand on his lower abdomen that was beginning to swell.
"Right," Eijirou sighed, stepping up beside him. "Sorry. We're just excited for the pup."
Izuku nodded, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Katsuki was still close by. Even with his two friends so close, he still felt nervous and jittery without his mate or the blond.
~
"Oh, wow," Shouto mused, walking into the soon-to-be nursery. "You guys sure went to town."
Katsuki growled lowly, hanging the pups clothes in the closet as Eijirou and Izuku tried figuring out the bassinet.
Izuku blushed. "Kacchan said he was tired of being pulled out for multiple trips... He wanted to get everything else in one go... So he grabbed more clothes, I got a bassinet, Kiri and Ochako helped me pick stuffed animals and blankets and bottles... Even got a stroller that can break down and become a carseat."
Shouto hummed, sitting beside Izuku. "Need some help?"
"It'd be greatly appreciated," Eijirou sighed, dropping the pieces he held.
~
Izuku felt massive at the seven month mark. He waddled around, feet, legs, hands and growing breasts so swollen - and he's tired all the time.
He lay curled up in his nests most of the time, but started to become stir crazy. He can't do anything, even if he wants to. Izuku refuses to turn on the news and won't let Shouto or their friends talk about heroing. He prefers having Ochako and little Ayaka over.
Ochako and Tenya decided to name their pup Sakura, but as soon as she arrived, they both realized that the name wouldn't suit her - just what they both said wouldn't happen. Tenya came up with Ayaka, and they were in love with the name. Izuku thought the name suited the little pup. She was rosy and chubby and the sweetest little thing.
Izuku loved cuddling her when Ochako and Tenya visited.
"He's so good with her," Tenya mused, sitting on the sofa with Shouto.
The shorter hummed and nodded, looking to the Omegas in the nest on the floor.
Izuku cradled Ayaka to his chest, crooning to her with Ochako laying in the nest beside him. Ayaka cooed, fingers curling and uncurling as she looked around.
"He's going to be a great mother, Todoroki..."
Shouto smiled softly. "I know..."
~
Izuku waddled as he paced, one hand holding his phone to his ear, the other supporting his very swollen belly. "Pick up, pick up, pick up!" He chanted, tears in his eyes and lip trembling.
"Hey, Midoriya!"
"Kirishima!" He gasped, stopping and grabbing onto the counter for support. "Kirishima, oh my God, thank God! Shouto isn't answering and Kacchan isn't answering-"
"Whoa, whoa, settle down. I got Katsuki right here. I'm putting you on speaker, 'kay? Is something wrong? What's wrong?"
Izuku sobbed. "I bled! I bled- I think I'm still bleeding, and- and I can't feel the pup! My pup isn't moving- something is wrong and I need the doctor and I need Shouto!"
"You're fucking- shit!" Katsuki snatching the phone from Eijirou. "I'm on my way! Eij is going to get icyhot. I'll be there in two minutes!"
The Omega whimpered, nodding. He let his phone slip from his hand to clutch his belly when Katsuki hung up.
True to his word, Katsuki was on his balcony in two minutes, slamming open the door in full hero gear. "Deku!?"
"Here!" Izuku shuffled from the kitchen and the blond was by his side in an instant.
"Keys? We need to get you to the hospital and I am not blasting you there!"
Izuku nodded, grabbing the car keys. Katsuki had one hand on Izuku's back as they hurried from the apartment, all the way to Shouto and Izuku's car. He helped the Omega into it before rushing to the driver's seat, gauntlets in the back. He drove quickly, but carefully, letting Izuku hold onto him.
~
"Izuku!" Shouto burst into the hospital room, panting heavily with Eijirou right behind him.
The greenette looked up, resting back againt the pillows. Katsuki sat beside the bed, leaned back in the chair.
"Are you okay!? Is everything okay, what happened?" Shouto rushed over, gently grabbing Izuku's face and looking him over.
"I'm okay, Shou," he sighed, taking his mate's hands. "Pup gave us a scare. They're being quiet today and the doctor said that bleeding during a pregnancy is normal... It wasn't too much blood, or even a lot. I just got scared..."
Shouto sighed, placing a kiss to Izuku's forehead. "I'm sorry I didn't answer... Fuck, I'm so sorry..."
The Omega smiled. "It's okay... I'm really sorry to have worried you guys so much... And I'm sorry I called you away from work for nothing..."
Katsuki growled and glared, earning a startled look from Izuku. "Don't apologize, nerd. If it was something and we didn't come, that'd be on us. Besides, shit like this is still our job." He scoffed and folded his arms.
Eijirou grinned and stood beside him. "He's right, Mido. This is still our job. You're just also our friend."
Izuku smiled softly to them. "Well, thank you..."
~
Braxon hicks contractions were the worst. He's had them twice now, and both times he had thought he was going into labor an entire month and a half early. So, Izuku isn't falling for it a third time.
Three weeks before his due date, he'd been hit by contractions, again. He had just sent Shouto out with some friends to get in some relaxing fun time away from home before the pup arrived. He likely wouldn't be back until late.
So, Izuku tried riding out each contraction. He breathed deeply through his nose and released through his mouth. One hand on his lower belly while the other grabbed whatever was nearest to support him. The contractions were far enough apart he wasn't too worried, and some of them were fairly tame. He was, though, a little concerned about how low the pup had settled during the contractions.
"Just need to relax," he muttered to himself, slowly climbing into his nest on the sofa. He whimpered and held his belly with another ripple of pain. "Pup... Please settle..." It can't be good that the contractions seem to be getting closer together. "Papa will be home soon..."
He was so close to giving in and just calling Shouto.
The pain was becoming too much. This was probably the worst Braxton Hicks of the three seperate cases he's had.
"Maybe eating something will help..." He sniffed and stood, hands on his belly. He shuffled to the kitchen, pausing with another contraction. Izuku inhaled, tears in his eyes as he gripped the edge of the counter.
He gasped and stiffened at a sudden, warm gush of fluid burst from inside him, puddling on the floor beneath him and drenching his legs. He stared down in horror, knuckles white from his tight grip on the counter.
Now that was not something that happened with the other two Braxton Hicks cases.
~
Shouto chuckled softly at something Denki had blubbered, drink in his hand and leaning against the counter. He took a sip and looked around. He had to admit, despite not having Izuku with him and not having wanted to come in the first place, he was enjoying himself.
The Hero Commission had wanted to celebrate the oncoming heroes. Lots of young kids had debuted and were quick to make names for themselves. Many of them had been disappointed that Izuku Midoriya, the Beacon of Hope and Number One Hero(although, he didn't currently have the number one spot due to his hiatus), was unable to attend, but they understood.
"Hey, I'm headed out," Katsuki grumbled as he approached the duel-quirk user, loosening his own tie. "Have you checked in on Deku?"
Shouto nodded, pulling out his phone. "Yeah. I texted him about ten minutes ago and he said he's doing okay."
Katsuki hummed. "Alright. You stayin' or you gonna head out, too?"
The taller sighed, staring at the time. Not too late, but he also just wanted to go home to his mate. "I'm gonna head home, too. I really don't want to leave Izuku alone for long since he's so close to the due date," he muttered, tucking his phone back into his pocket.
Both Alphas said(or grunted) their goodbyes to nearby friends and left the party.
"What about Eijirou?"
"Eij wanted to stay a little longer... Meet some of the kids," Katsuki sighed, running his fingers through his hair. "I have a question..."
Shouto raised a brow, looking to the blond. "Okay..? What is it?" Katsuki never asked him personal questions and also never sounded or looked so concerned near him.
Katsuki licked his lips, glancing away. "I just... Have been thinking lately a lot about the pup and Deku. Deku has always wanted pups- always wanted a family. You, though... You originally didn't want any pups. You were... Afraid, I guess, of being too much like your father... What changed your mind..?"
"Oh..." Shouto's brows furrowed. He rubbed his hands together. "Well... I'm honestly not too sure about the answer to that... A combination of things, I suppose... And, it's not that I never wanted pups. I did. I just - like you said - was afraid of being too much like father. Being with Izuku, though... He was the person who first told me, who first made me realize that I didn't have to be my father. I wouldn't end up like him if I didn't want to and worked on myself. As our relationship grew, I realized I wanted to experience everything with him... And I could see us having a family together... But what really set it in was that first ultrasound... It started with the positive pregnancy test, but when I saw our pup on the screen... I knew I truly wanted pups with him... Have our own family..."
The blond listened quietly as they walked, gaze low. Silence set between them, Shouto unsure what to say next.
Finally, Katsuki breathed deeply and raised his head. "Eijirou wants pups... He hasn't come outright and said it, but... It's obvious, ya know..?"
Shouto hummed and nodded.
Katsuku tugged on his tie once again. "I'm happy... I'm content with just him. I don't want pups. I've never wanted them. I don't think I ever will, but... I hate that I'm depriving Eijirou of that. I know him wanting pups isn't something to take lightly. I don't know how to talk to him about it, I wouldn't know what to say... Would we end up fighting? I just- it feels unfair for him..." He trailed off, brows knit tightly.
The taller sighed, hands in his pockets. "I don't know, Bakugou... It seems kind of complicated... And we both know that I'm not the greatest person to come to for family advice."
Both Alphas chuckled.
Shouto rolled his shoulders and glanced up to the darkening sky. "Eijirou knows you don't want kids. He chose to be with you over being with someone who would. He loves you and understands you. Yeah, sometimes he might be upset knowing he may never have kids... I know Izuku was devastated when the doctor told him that it would be near impossible for him to get pregnant before he started the treatments... But with you and Eijirou, it's different. Neither of you can carry pups. I guess... The best thing would be for you two to talk about it... Clear the air, I suppose."
Katsuki hummed softly. "I can... Talk to him, I guess."
"I wish you luck, then."
The shorter snorted, perking up as Shouto's phone rang.
Shouto pulled out his phone, blinking at the contact before quickly answer. "Izuku? Is everything o-"
"Shouto!" His mate's voice was a shaky wail on the other line, both him and the Alpha beside him stiffening. "Oh, God, I- ahh!" Izuku cried out in pain as he dropped his phone, the clattering loud and sharp in Shouto's ear.
"Izuku!? Izuku, what's going on? What's happened- are you okay!?"
His mate sobbed, taking a moment before he grabbed the phone. "M-my- my water broke and my- my contractions are very close and I can- I can feel the pup starting to drop-!"
"What!?" Shouto and Katsuki both shouted, on high alert.
The Omega whimpered, breath coming in heavy pants. "I-it hurts and- and I'm scared! I can't- I can't do it alone!"
Panic raced throughout Shouto's entire body and he was running before he could even think about it, Katsuki hot on his heels. "I'm coming, Izuku!"
~
Five minutes. Izuku put his phone down five minutes ago and his mate still wasn't there and neither was the ambulance he called. He whimpered and sobbed, holding his belly.
God, it hurt so bad. Worse than he'd ever imagined. He crouched down, one hand gripping the edge of the coffee table. He started the panic, even with the slight release of tension from the new position. What if they didn't make it? What if something goes wrong?
A scream ripped from his throat with another agonizing contraction, tears streaking his cheeks.
It's happening so fast. The contractions are getting closer and closer together. The pup was not waiting for anything.
He just might have to do this alone.
Izuku tried breathing through it, shakily standing once the contraction was over. He winced and panted, kicking off his pants before crouching back down, grasping the edge of the coffee table. Can't exactly safely get the pup out with pants in the way.
God, how can you tell if you're contracted enough? Could he use his fingers? Could he even tell using his fingers alone how many centimeters he is? How does he know when he'll be ready to push?
The Omega grit his teeth, pained sounds hissing through. The contractions were near forcing him to push. His knuckles were concerningly white from his grip, entire body trembling.
He can't do this! It's too much!
Izuku sobbed and gasped. He could feel the pup.
Where is his mate!?
He wailed and gasped, eyes pinched shut and body tensing with contraction after contraction.
He has to push.
Izuku panted heavily, blinking through his tears. He slid one hand under his belly, biting his lip. "It'll be okay..." He's not sure if he's reassuring himself or talking to the pup. "Everything will be okay..."
Carefully, he adjusted himself, holding the coffee table still, gritting his teeth as another contraction built up. He inhaled deeply, then pushed.
His knuckles turned white, teeth clenched so tight his jaw hurt. His entire body felt as if he'd been thrown in flames. Oh God, he might just die.
Once he relaxed, he thought he night just fall over. It didn't feel as if the pup had moved at all. Maybe he's doing this wrong. Maybe something isn't right.
However, he pushed through the next contraction, pained sounds strangled and fat tears rolling down his cheeks.
"Izuku!"
"Deku!"
The door burst open and he startled, snapping his head up. Shouto steamed from one side and smoked from the other, Katsuki's hands still smoking as well, both of them in complete panic. Izuku sobbed and both Alphas rushed over in a heartbeat.
"Izuku- fuck! Fuck, I'm so sorry it took so long-"
"Holy shit! Why didn't you call sooner!?"
The Omega panted, head low as his mate took his hand. "I-I thought... Braxton Hicks... It-it's too early..."
"Half 'n' half we need to get him to a hospital!"
"Already... Called an ambulance," Izuku whimpered, tensing as he felt another contraction. His mate is here now. He's not going to be alone anymore.
He squeezed Shouto's hand, both Alpha's eyes blowing wide as he pushed.
"Whoa whoa!" Katsuki knelt to the other side of him. "Don't- why are you pushing!? You might not be ready to push!"
"Don't yell at me, Kacchan!" Izuku shouted back, sweat dotting his forehead. The blond reeled back quickly.
Shouto rubbed Izuku's back, unsure of what else to do. He had only attended one birthing class, which he had been called out of half-way through. Izuku only attended two or three aside from that one, and they never really discussed it. Well, maybe they should have and Shouto would be more helpful.
Izuku panted, body shaking from the agony and exertion his body was going through. Shouto grit his teeth. Where the hell is the ambulance?
It took about two more pushes before the paramedics finally arrived, rushing through the open door. Katsuki was shooed to the side, a paramedic taking his place.
"Sir, are you his mate?" He asked Shouto.
The Alpha scrunched his nose at the question, eyeing the medic. The whole world knew he and Izuku were mates.
The Beta medic smiled apologetically. "Standard procedure, sir. Habit as well, I supposed."
"Pleasantries are nice and all," Izuku muttered, voice still strained, "but a pup is trying to get out of my body and it is excruciating!"
Immediately, the medic's attention was all on the greenette. He helped Izuku and Shouto so the Omega leaned back against his mate's chest and faced the medic. "Looks like you're doing great so far, Midoriya. Your pup should be here soon."
"Wait- why are you not taking him to the hospital!?" Katsuki jumped in, stopped by one of the other two medics.
"He's too far along in the labor to safely move him. Once the pup is born, then we can transport them to the hospital to make sure everything is okay," she explained.
Katsuki huffed, but didn't fight her.
Izuku panted, gripping Shouto's hands tightly.
Both medic and Shouto encouraged Izuku as he pushed.
It felt like hours before the medic finally shouted, "I can see their head!"
Izuku didn't think he could push harder until then. He worried briefly for Shouto's hands, thinking he may crush them as he wailed and strained, desperate to get this pup out.
Shouto uttered encouragements, kissing his head.
"I got them! I got your pup!"
The Omega gasped and practically collapsed onto Shouto. He panted heavily, entire body trembling.
Shouto lifted him carefully, placing him in his nest and covering him with one of the blankets. Izuku closed his eyes and leaned into his mate as a kiss and a praise were pressed into his curls. "I'm so proud of you," Shouto murmured, crooning softly to his mate.
Izuku purred, looking over to the medic who held his crying pup. He reached out, whimpering.
The medic smiled and shuffled over, carefully placing the newborn pup in Izuku's arms. "Here you are. Cleaned up and ready for the world..."
His pup settled as Izuku crooned and nuzzled him, tucking the little cloth tighter around them. "My pup," he sighed happily.
Shouto smiled, tears in his eyes as he looked at the swaddled babe. He reached up, hand hovering over their head. "Oh my God... They're beautiful, 'Zuku..."
The greenette rested his head on Shouto's shoulders, steadily relaxing. "They're here, Shou... They're okay..."
"I love you so much..." Shouto gently pulled Izuku into his chest, swaying slowly.
"Sorry to interrupt," the medic spoke after cleaning up, bowing to them, "but it seems like Mr. Dynamight is growing impatient. I don't think my colleagues can hold him out any longer. Can he re-enter?"
Shouto blinked and glanced over his shoulder. He hadn't even realized Katsuki had been brought out.
"Yes, he can come in." Izuku was the one to answer, admiring the pup in his arms.
The medic bowed again before walking around the sofa and opening the apartment door.
Katsuki barged in before they had a chance to speak. "Is it over? Is it done? Is the pup okay- is Deku okay?"
Izuku laughed softly, Shouti shaking his head.
The blond hurried over, pausing once he saw the pup. He sighed, shoulders visibly dropping as he relaxed. "They're okay..?"
"Yes, Kacchan," Izuku whispered, voice worn out. "They're just fine... Both of us are..."
Katsuki shuffled closer and got down on his knee. He smiled in just the slightest as the pup looked in his direction. "You're already a Goddamn troublemaker, huh? A whole three weeks early and the one night your pop is out."
The pup stared at him, little fingers curled into fists.
Izuku caressed the pup's blotchy red cheek, nosing at frosty white hair. "My pup..."
~
"Hi, little Kento~," Ochako crooned giddily, hands on her chest and face lowered to be level with the pup in Izuku's arms.
The pup stared with a slight scrunch in his nose.
"Oh God, he's just so cute! He looks so much like you, Todoroki!"
Shouto chuckled, hand on Izuku's back. "That's what everyone keeps saying."
"That's because it's true," Izuku mused, adjusting his pup.
Kento pouted and squirmed, turning into his dam's chest and curling his fingers into Izuku's shirt.
Ochako giggled. "He's shy, poor thing."
"He ain't shy, you're just fuckin' annoying," Katsuki grumbled, nudging the brunette out of the way to hand Izuku a plate.
The greenette thanked him, holding Kento in one arm as he took his plate. "Don't be mean, Kacchan. He doesn't know her."
Katsuki rolled his eyes. "Kid likes me just fine, and Eiji."
"Yup! I got to hold him!" Eijirou bounced over with a toothy grin. "But, he didn't like being away from Mido very long."
Ochako pouted, crossing her arms. "Tenya! Come over and see if Kento likes you!"
Izuku laughed at Tenya's exasperated expression, his own daughter cradled in his arm. He grumbled softly as he made his way over and leaned over to Kento. "Hey, little pup..."
Kento peeked up from his hiding place at the new voice, cooing softly.
Tenya smiled and waved. "Hey... I am Tenya Iida. This is my mate, Ochako Iida, and my pup, Ayaka Iida." Ayaka squeaked at her name, looking up to her father. "Maybe you two will be good friends one day."
"You dumbass, he's not gonna understand jackshit you say."
"Kacchan," Izuku sighed, watching Kento stare at the other Alpha, stormy gray eyes big and curious.
Kento pouted and turned back into Izuku, curling up tight.
Katsuki smirked, Tenya shrugging and Ochako whining.
"I'm sure he'll warm up to everyone eventually," Shouto mused with a wave.
The blond sat down, mate beside him. He grinned wide, feet kicked up on the coffee table. "I just think it's fucking funny that the brat likes me and not you losers."
"Well, you were one of the first scents he had when he was born, Kacchan. You're familiar." Izuku adjusted Kento, smiling as the pup yawned. "And Kiri just has the magic touch."
Eijirou laughed, arm draped over Katsuki's shoulders.
Izuku stood up, gently brushing off Shouto's hand. "I'm going to lay him down. He's tired and I don't want to overwhelm him."
Shouto nodded and walked him go down into the hall, whispering to their pup and gently scenting him.
Tsuyu and Momo sat beside him. "Happy?" Momo asked with a smile and a tilt of her head.
The duel-quirk user hummed, leaning back into the sofa. "Than I ever thought I could be..."
