Chapter 2: If Home Is Where The Heart Is

//NINAS POV\\

"You got everything?" Tyler asks, chewing on his bottom lip. Josh is at his left, and to his right, his wife, Jenna. They kind of remind me of my family; before they knew. Before they dumped me here to rot in this orphanage. Josh is about the height of my older brother, Randall, and Tyler and Jen remind of my parents.

I bite my tongue and nod, pressing a small smile. I'm terrified. they could end up just like my family. They could be afraid of me, and send me back here. I don't want to be here anymore. I don't want to wake up at 7AM on the dot every morning. I don't want to have eating schedules. I want my own room. If I can just have a normal-ish life, is be the happiest person on the planet. "Yes," I whisper.

"Good luck, Nini!" Alana gives me a wave. her brown eyes are reflecting sadness, happiness, and excitement. "See you soon!"

I give her a little grin, turning back to the three adults before me. It's then, that I realize that I am beyond terrified. My hands are shaking and my face is completely pale. I feel frozen in place. My heart is beating extremely fast, and I feel like throwing up. It all felt so surreal. They're here. In. The. Flesh. They're here for me. They like me. They want me. What if I disappoint them? What if I'm not what they were looking for? What if they bring me back here?

Before I can register, I feel Josh's hand on my back. He crouched in front of me, a grin threatening to creep onto his mouth. He gives me a little nod. "You okay?"

I can't answer him. I can't move. I'm going to mess this up. I'm going to ruin everything. I'm going to ruin them. I let out a small squeak. I'm still shaking, and I guess he can tell, because he is pulling me into a tight hug, and whispering, "There's nothing to worry about, Nina. It's okay."

"Yes there is," I choke. I let my shaking hands wrap around him, the warmth of his body slightly comforting against my cold arms. "I'm different. In a way that no one believes."

Josh lets a laugh rumble in his throat as he pulls away. He smiles, looking me in the eyes. "Differences excite us. Welcome to the pack of weirdos, Nin. I hope you have something unexpected to offer. Let's get going." He stands, never taking his hands off my back.

That's when I begin to think. Maybe, just maybe, this won't be so bad. Maybe, I'll fit in.

-----

I guess I had fallen asleep during the car ride, because when I awoke, the car is stopped, and Jenna is nudging my arm. "Wake up, Nina. We're here."

I give a small grunt, goosebumps rising on my skin as I stretch. I pop my spine, satisfied by the crackle. "Mmhm," I respond, my hands beginning to shake, again. I want to be here so badly, yet I still can't shake the feeling that I'll do something wrong. I can't shake the feeling that I'll screw up. I step out of the car, and look around. It's really nice. The house isn't too big, but it's a nice size. There's a large oak tree shading most of the front yard. There is also a few bushes lining the walls.

"Like it?" I hear the familiar voice of Tyler Joseph say behind me. He sounds so far away, but in reality, he's only about 5 feet away from my current location.

"Yeah," I breathe out. "It's beautiful. I love the simplicity."

"Am I pack mule or something?" Josh's voice sounds from behind us. I turn to find him carrying my small duffle bag, looking a bit tired. "If I am, that's totally fine. I just need to know this stuff in advance." He shoves the bag over his shoulder with a grunt. "What do you have in here, anyway, Nina? A baby elephant?"

I can't help but chuckle at the exaggeration in his voice. "You think that's heavy?" I loosen up a little as he gives me a devious grin. "Like, seriously, do some push-ups, Joshua."

"Do you wanna carry your bag, Miss Sassy Pants?" He pouts, failing to hide the laugh that's rising from the back of his throat. "Seriously, you're worse than Patrick."

"No one, and I mean no one, is worse than Patrick, Josh. You know that," Tyler giggles, his voice low. "He has earned the name Sasstrick for a reason."

"Two words: Gerard Way." Josh fails at hiding a grin as he says that. His eyes crinkle at the edges, giving him the classic Happy Josh Dun look that we know so well.

As they're arguing about the sass lords, I find myself following Jenna inside. Josh still has my bag, and at this point, I couldn't care less. I just want to get inside. The heat is killing me.

"They didn't warn you about Sammi, did they?" Jenna asks me as I lean against the door frame. Sammi? Who's Sammi? I shake my head: no, and she continues. "Josh isn't around all the time, but he'll be here most of the time. Technically, Tyler and I are your legal guardians. Well, Josh adopted another girl about a year ago: Samira, but you call her that, and she will get mad."

"Oh," I say chewing on my bottom lip. Another person here? Another girl? "Uhm, how old is she?" I ask, nerves tingling with a mix of terror and excitement.

"Almost 16," a voice says from behind me. I turn to see a girl, about 5'2, a devious grin on her face. Her skin is a shade or two darker than mine, and she has beautiful eyes. "Welcome to the rebel alliance," she slaps her hand onto my back. "Sammi's the name. Call me something different, and I will not hesitate to go all AB/AP music video on you."

I press a nod, trying to gulp back the lump of fear in my throat. "Nina, but you can call me Nini, or Nin." My voice cracks a bit, making my nervousness more obvious, if possible. She seems cool; loose, but I feel like I'm a disappointment in some way, and I don't understand how. In my mind, I'm a completely happy, confident girl who has no problem talking to people, but I can't piece the functions together to actually become the human being that I want to be. "13 in September."

"Gerard beats Patrick, and you know it!" Josh yelps, walking in, Tyler on his tail. "I mean, come on! He's Gerard! He's sass King!" Ge drops my bag next to me, shaking out his hands, now red as a tomato from carrying in the somewhat-heavy material. He twists on his heel and snaps his fingers at Tyler. "Not To Mention, Me."

"Gerard is only really sassy when he's drunk!" Tyler protests, slamming his hand on the mahogany table. I can't resist.

"That is mahogany!" I screech in a British accent, similar to that of Effie Trinket from the Hunger Games. Tyler and Josh shut up for a moment and let out low chuckles.

"Thank you, for your consideration." Josh pokes Tyler's nose before pushing past him and plopping his body on the couch. "Push-ups later. Netflix: now. Any requests, guys?"

"Scorpion," I squeak, tensing at the slight chance of judgement. I give a small shrug to Josh who glances up at me with those adorable eyes of his.

"Dude, yes!" Sammi laughs. A small squeak emerges from her throat. "Do you ship Walter and Paige?"

"Yes! Holy crap!" I squeal, high-fiving her. My mouth twitched into a huge grin.

"Yo, you wanna stop fangirling and come watch this?" Tyler was on the couch, Jenna next to him, now. Sammi and I nodded, our grins never falling. I plop on the other side of Tyler, his hoodie warm against my skin. He wraps his arm around me, making me tense a little. I loosen up, and watch the show, glancing at Sammi who is snuggled up next to Josh.

-----

I must have dozed off, along with everyone else, because when I awake, Tyler still has his arm wrapped around me, and the clock reads 3:07 AM. Sammi is snuggled up on Josh's leg, her mouth slightly open. Josh's head is thrown back against the couch. He has his hands loosely wrapped around her.

I feel Tyler tense. "You okay, Nina?" He yawns. He looks a bit nervous. He pulls me a little closer.

"Yeah," I squeak. "I just can't sleep."

Tyler gives me a small grin. "Want me to sing?"

I give him a little giggle, and nod. His voice is calming to me. "Please?" My voice is a high whisper as I state the request.

He nods, quietly beginning to sing The Judge. "When the leader of the bad guys sang something soft, and soaked in pain, I heard the echo from his secret hideaway. He must've forgot to close his door, as he cranked out those dismal chords, and his four walls declared him insane."

I find myself drifting off as he sings, his voice soothing me. Goosebumps rise on my skin, because for once, I am truly happy. For once, I feel like nothing is stopping me. I actually feel normal. I feel like a normal girl.

I feel like I'm fitting in, here, but they don't know what I can do. They have no idea what I am capable of, and right now, I like it that way. I like it a lot.

You're the judge,
Oh, no
Set me free

You're the judge,
Oh, no
Set me free

I know my soul's freezing
Hell's hot for good reason,
So please,
Take me.
