Chapter Nine

Sleep was not a common thing to notice within the Slytherin rooms. Fourteen-year-olds woke up, covered in sweat and panting while eleven-year-olds were trying to stomach their dinner, the nightmares still fresh in their minds. The Slytherins weren't new to insomniacs, they weren't new to people who woke up panting in the middle of the night, whimpering and coughing up their dinner into a bucket. To say that the Slytherins actually slept was preposterous, to say that they could actually close their eyes without getting met with a slap of their home life or past was absurd.

It was the main reason why the common room was filled to the brim with Slytherin students at twelve AM in the morning. Most of them holding mugs of tea while the rest huddled up underneath their blankets, staring into the flickers of the ember fire. Most of them had tea and were under blankets. Across the ground held ties of random colors, the only time Slytherins couldn't be prejudiced little brats as a hand reached out to grab a mug that lay across the table that was pushed to the side.

Blaise was the first to release a soft sigh as he looked at the two boys that shared the blanket with him. Draco was seated almost comfortably, legs to his chest as he held his head up with one arm while the other was draped over the smaller form of an unconscious and pale boy, reddish black hair falling in front of his face as his glasses began to slip off his nose. Blaise frowned heavily before reaching forward, plucking the glasses off and folding them neatly before placing them on the table.

Draco gave a soft yawn, shifting a little underneath the blanket and rubbing his eyes. He stared out into the fire with furrowed eyebrows, scrunching up his nose as he did so. Blaise could only blink before noticing the yellow and black tie that was laid across the table.

"Isn't your cousin here?"

Draco's eyes blinked open widely as he turned his head to the side and his eyes scoured the room full of blankets, House members, and mugs of tea. Multiple Slytherin students were underneath blankets, siblings with siblings, boyfriends with girlfriends and or boyfriends with boyfriends and girlfriends with girlfriends, people from different houses, it was almost as if the whole common room was filled to the brim with multiple puzzles pieces that fit perfectly together. The young Malfoy brought his lips into a thin line as he unlatched himself from his two friends and stood up to his feet.

The high pitched talking caught his attention as he shifted his direction towards the sound. His legs moved of their own accord while his eyes scoured the area before him. They landed on their target only a second or two later. Underneath a baby blue blanket that was no doubt seen in his house once was none other than the black haired, blue eyed boy who was speaking with a Tall first year, one that Draco and Blaise knew well enough.

"Well, since you're a Hufflepuff, it's ridiculous to even let you inside. After all, we don't deal with Flower loving, humble and righteous people, you're worse than Gryffindors."

Finley had his head tilted, eyebrows raised as he placed his hands on his lap, twiddling once, twice and then his shoulders slumped just a bit. He didn't try to hide the dull shine in his eyes again, never once did he address the boy on what he was saying as if he was confused or thinking of the answer.

"Coming from the person who willingly decided to sit with him, I have an odd feeling that you're lying, Nott."

Finley looked up with narrowed eyes only to catch the grey ones of his cousin who had his arms crossed and a sneer on his face. Theodore opened his mouth to protest yet all that came out was an exasperated sigh as he pulled the blanket over them some more and averted his eyes. Finley paused for a second or two before diving straight back into his rambling of something that involved potions and berries.

He should have known that this would happen, the two had shared a room before but he didn't expect it to happen again. Draco stood near his bed, glaring at the one next to him that had a mountain of books on it, each one had a bookmark marking the page that the owner had been reading through yet that wasn't the main reason why the Malfoy found himself upset.

It was the fact that said owner had taken the liberty of leaving him alone to unpack all his stuff like some slave. So, Draco simply sat there, kicking his feet back and forth as he waited to dump the chores on the famous twin that the school was raging on about. Lost in his thoughts, Draco never noticed that Blue had walked into the room until his eyes landed on a purplish bruise on the younger's neck.

His eyebrows furrowed and the older and taller of the two boys jumped down from his bed. Inching forward, Draco cleared his throat and nudged the distracted boy with his foot.

"What's that?"

Blue jumped, dropping the book he had in his hands at the question. He furrowed his eyebrows before his hands curled around the edges of the grey sweater he had on. Averting his eyes, Blue gave a small shrug, not up to any conversations yet Draco could only narrow his eyes even further as he swiped up Blue's wrist. The green-eyed boy made a small hiss as he pulled it away only for Draco to grab at his sleeve instead.

"Don't play dumb with me, What's with the bruise on your neck? Did little old potter fight his brother and Lose?"

Draco never noticed how red Blue's face had gotten or how tense his body was either as he taunted him with word after word of insults. Reaching forward, he pushed the boy back slightly with a scowl just as Blue wiped down the dust from his pants as if he was ignoring him. Furrowing his eyebrows, Draco lunged forward.

The two fell to the ground with a thud. Draco was too busy trying to get a few more insults in before Blue started to tug at his hair and push his face away while his legs kicked him in the stomach more than once. Draco's hand slipped upwards making the sweater rise up in accordance.

Bruises upon bruises seemed to line skin, some of them were new and some were old. Draco could have sworn he saw stitches somewhere around Blue's midsection. Forgetting that Blue was still trying to get him off, Draco rose the sweater higher with a curious gaze. More bruises lined his torso and chest, probably given from someone or something. Stitches were across the sides slightly and the skin was all red, throbbing and sore all around.

"Peri-"

Before Draco could even finish the boy's name, he felt sharp teeth dig into his flesh. Letting out a shriek of pain, he pushed himself off of the boy and held his bleeding hand with wide eyes while Blue spat the blood on the cement floor in disgust. It took a moment before the Boy registered what he had just done. Shakily standing up to his feet, Blue stepped back ever so slowly, tongue licking his teeth where excess blood stains remained.

"You Freak! Why the bloody hell did you bite me for?! What are you, some stupid dog?!"

Blue winced and felt his back hit the wall near the exit. Making a small gulp, the smaller boy felt his eyes sting and without further warning, the floodgates had already opened up. His lower lip wobbled unsteadily and his heart felt as if it was beating a million miles per hour. Not wanting to see the look of panic and obvious pain on Draco's face, he turned around and ran, passing by Finley who opened his mouth yet soon closed it when he noticed the tears that were falling from the boy's eyes.

So, Blue ran, he didn't know where he was going but all he knew was that he needed to get as far as possible. Running out of breath, the small boy stumbled into an empty classroom, the door closing shut behind him. Leaning against it, he slid down slowly, knees drawn up to his chest and head against the door as he closed his eyes. The taste of blood was still in his mouth as he finally allowed himself to simply break. The wood of the chairs started to erode faster than ever, the chairs themselves falling apart as Blue kept his eyes closed and his knees to his chest.

"I'm sorry."
