Chapter Seventeen
It had been five whole months since the Turtles had said farewell to their sensei and friend. Five whole months since they had last spoken with Splinter and Madi. The worry for their loved ones was intoxicating, but the four brothers, April, Jacob, and Lisa acted as if nothing was wrong. Nearly three hours after Madi and Splinter had left, Raphael had woken up from his coma.
Saying he was angry at Donnie would've been the biggest understatement in history.
As soon as the red-masked turtle opened his eyes, he ripped out his I.V., marched straight out his room and kicked down Donnie's lab door, causing the brainiac to spill all the blood-red liquid in the beaker he had been holding all over his lab table. Due to the fact that his back had been facing the doorway, Donnie stood up in an angry huff, struggling to save the remaining papers that hadn't been contaminated by the crimson juice.
"Mikey! For the last time, don't-" Once Donnie had turned around to yell at Mikey's face and realized that it wasn't Mikey, the papers in his arms - along with his jaw- dropped to the floor. Standing before the scientist was a living miracle. A huge relieved grin appeared on his face. "Raph! You're awake! It's about time, buddy-" He stopped talking when he saw the deadly snarl on his brother's lips and his clenched hands. "Raph? What's wrong?"
"You-" Raph coughed into his arm a dry-throated cough due to the lack of water that had gone into his system naturally- not by I.V.- and glared back at his brother. "Are so-" Cough. "Dead."
Thinking that Donnie was scared would've been a reasonable thought. As Raphael approached, fire flaring in his eyes, Donatello quickly ran around his lab table, using it as some what of a shield. He held up his hands towards his brother in defense.
"Now, take it easy, Raph. You've just woken up and a lot of time has passed since you were last with us. You're just confused-"
"I know what I saw, Donnie." Raph growled and grabbed the edge of the table, using an unusually large amount of strength for a guy who had done nothing but sleep for the last month, and threw the large piece of metal. Donnie ducked and the metal table zoomed over his head, scattering the rest of his papers and concoctions that he had been brewing. Raph bent down and grabbed his brother by the back of his bandana, lifting him up off of the ground a few inches.
"I don't know-"
"Don't lie to me, Donatello." Raph hissed. "I know what I saw."
"What exactly did you see?" Donnie asked as he struggled to get free from his brother's grip. Little did they know that a crowd had began to grow in the hall outside the lab, caused by the sudden comotion from Donnie's laboratory.
"I saw my brother- one of my best friends -tell the girl of my dreams to question me, to question who I am and how honest I had been with her!" Raph yelled at him. When Donnie's eyes widened with realization, that was when Raph was one-hundred percent sure that he hadn't just dreamed it all up. With a furocious cry, Raph shoved Donnie up against the nearest wall and pinned him there.
"Raph, just slow down and think-"
"Don't tell me what to do, Donnie." Raph snapped at him. His face softened for a split second, then he dropped his brother back down to the floor and let him fall in a heap. Towering over him, he pointed his big green finger at the brainiac and said something that Donnie would never forget. "I am ashamed of you, Donatello." Raph's voice cracked as the true hurt of what Donnie had told Madi when she had been grieving over Raph's state settled into his heart. His brother wasn't perfect, but he would've never expected something like this from him. Especially not involving something as severe as this. "I would never had said anything like that-"
"Are you kidding me, Raph?" Donnie yelled, just as angry as he got back up to his feet. Now that he was standing straight up, it was Donnie's turn to tower over his sibling. "After all the terrible unsupportive stuff you've said to me when it comes to my love-life, you expect me to allow a jerk like you to trick an amazing girl like her?"
"How am I tricking her, Donnie?" Raph snapped right back at him. He refused to back down from this challenge.
"You're tricking her into believing that you're some five-star heart-throb with the sweetest heart that there ever was and ever will be! You treated her like she was sewage when you first met! Like she was the enemy when she truly was the victim! You said she was nothing but trouble-"
"And my opinion of her changed when I got to know her better! I'm not some 'love at first-sight' kind of guy, in case you haven't noticed, Donnie!"
"You still had no right to treat her like that! And how you expect her to be perfect one-hundred percent of the time and yell at her when she isn't- it makes me SICK!" Donnie screamed that last part in Raph's face as loud as he could. Noticing the shock on his brother's face from that sudden explosive out-burst, Donnie folded his arms and lowered his voice. "You don't deserve her, Raphael. And I wanted her to know that." How Raph even knew about what he had told Madi, Donnie had no idea. But it didn't matter now, anyway. With that, Donnie shoved past Raph and marched out into the hallway, past the crowd that had gathered to see the show, and into the sewers. He needed time to think about everything that had happened.
While Donnie left, Raph stood there, pondering what his brother had told him. He clenched his fists and squeezed his eyes shut. It wasn't true. None of what Donnie had said was true. At least, Raph believed it wasn't. But was he right? Raph didn't think he expected Madi to be some perfect Barbie-doll, and he couldn't remember yelling at her when she'd screwed up- But then all the times he had yelled at her or said anything rude to her echoed in his mind.
"Y' see? I knew she was nothing but trouble. The sooner you three get that through your skulls, the better."
"Since when have you had a boyfriend?" Raph asked.
"What, you jealous, Raph?" Donnie asked.
"No, I'm just surprised she could get one." the red-masked turtle remarked.
"WHERE THE SHELL WERE YOU!?!"
"Are you serious?!" Raph shouted in anger and frustration. "You're going to let her get off the hook this easily?! This is so unfair!"
"Fine, whatever." he huffed and walked away.
Maybe Donnie wasn't completely wrong.
