Episode 6: Surge

The following day, Blake woke up early to head to school.

"Aren't you going to eat something?" Diane asked as soon as she finished wolfing down her toast. She was seated in a black chair in front of a long, crystal table.

Blake touched his stomach and nodded. He ran into the elegant but modest dining room and grabbed an empty bowl placed on the table for him. Next he served himself some 'Colorful Rings', fruity cereal.

"Where's your brother?" he asked as he poured milk into the bowl.

Diane sighed. "He's still asleep. That guy isn't one to wake up until the last minute."

Blake snickers. "He does seem like the type."

"I know, huh? Hard to believe that he has that much energy when he's awake. Though perhaps the many hours of sleep are the reason he's so full of energy."

"You're not too shabby yourself."

She looked up. "Huh?" she chuckled. "I try my hardest to be upbeat. Sort of got to be if I plan to keep my older brother in check."

"Yeah. Taking care of Roy seems like a lot of work."

"Talking about me?" a voice boomed.

Blake spilled some milk on the table as he quickly put down the carton of milk. Standing by the arched doorway was Roy with an impish grin.

"Uh... We were talking about Silver," Blake responded, laughing nervously.

Roy doubled over in laughter. "S...silver? Come on. Even you can do better than that!"

"Eh... Alright. You got us."

"Besides. That guy isn't really worth talking about."

Blake and Diane raised their eyebrows at him.

"What?" he asked, taking a seat next to his sister.

"How can you say that when he's an XYZ user like us," Diane said. "We still don't know much about him."

Roy crossed his hands together and grinned. "You seem awfully interested in the guy."

Diane became flustered. "What? I am not interested in that jerk."

"Oh hoho. Your deny it but look at you. You're all red."

She grabbed her older brother by the collar, drawing him close. "I said. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THAT JERK!"

"Uh... guys," Blake said, pointing at something behind them. Or rather someone.

Silver waved at the two as if he hadn't overheard them.

"Uh, Silver," Diane said, scooting closer to the table.

Roy covered his mouth, trying to keep himself from laughing.

"Oh how I wish you had drank a glass of milk so that it could come out of your nose for laughing so obnoxiously," Diane whispered to him.

"Wow. You're cruel," Roy said, touching his nose.

"Silver is asking if he can join us. Can he?" Blake asked.

Roy and Diane looked at each other. Roy raised his eyebrows, smiling knowingly at her. Diane's face turned red once more. She lowered her head and looked away from Silver's stare. "S-sure..." she said, stuttering.

Silver walked over to the table, drawing the soft cushioned chair next to Blake.

Diane frowned as he sat directly across from her.

"What? Do I got something on my face?" she asked, glancing away.

Silver performed several handsigns.

"Translation please," Roy said, glancing at Blake.

Blake looked up from his cereal. "I didn't see."

Silver repeated them once more.

"Oh. He says. 'You do got some crumbs on your face."

Diane's face grew as red as her brother's hair. Quickly she wiped her face with a napkin and stood up. "I better get going. I still got some things to prepare before we go."

Roy whistled. "Don't cha want to spend time with Silver?"

Diane shot a fireball at him as she turned the corner. Roy recoiled, shielding himself with an iron plate. "Damn. She's more fired up than usual."

"Ha. Nice pun," Blake said.

"I didn't mean to make one," Roy said.

Blake slumped in his seat. "So. Silver. What brings you here? Uh. How did you even get in."

'Roy and Diane's mother opened the door,' he signaled. 'She said that I was welcomed here any time. Said something about me being her future son-in-law.'

The black-haired boy chuckled. "I see."

Roy narrowed his eyes at Blake. "Well, what's so funny?"

Blake looked at Diane who was busy packing some snacks in a corner with a nervous smile. "Uhh, just an inside joke."

"Hmm..." Roy said in suspicion. "Meh"

"Hey. What kind of snacks do you like Blake?" Diane asked, turning around. She watch the three guys with suspicion. "What were you talking about anyway?"

"Errr..." Blake said, darting his eyes from left to right rapidly. "It's..."

She shook her head. "It's fine. Now, what do you like me me to pack? What about you Silver?"

"Oh. You ask the guy that you're not interested in but not me?"

Diane groaned in frustration and stared at him angrily. "You can pack your own food!" she yelled.

"Fine. Maybe I will!" Roy yelled.

Roy threw his chair back and went over to the cupboard. "Never seen you like this," he whispered seriously.

"And what's that supposed to mean?"

He tilted his head. "Just find it odd that you would find an ice user interesting. I mean, you are fire."

Diane paused. Silver's face became red as he overheard and so did hers. Blake eased back in his chair, looking at all three of them.

Diane's fists were tightly clenched and a red glow began to emerge from her palms. "Flaming Phoenix Fist!" she yelled. Roy's arms became fully armored and took the complete attack head on.

"Woah!" Blake said, standing up. Silver did the same and walked over to the two of them. Blake put his hand on Silver's shoulder.

Silver glanced over his shoulder with a surprised facial expression. "Wait..." Blake said.

The smoke cleared from the collision. It revealed Roy and Diane exchanging deadly stares at each other.

"Sibling rivalry at it's best."

Silver took another step forward and nudged Diane's shoulder.

She slapped his hand away, giving him a look similar to the one she had flashed to Roy. "Stay out of this."

The ice XYZ user stepped back. He looked down at the tiled floor with a frown. He signaled something and turned around, leaving.

Diane paid him to attention, continuing her fight with her brother.

Blake finished his food and ran out after Silver. Those hand signs... He had said 'sorry for interfering'.

"Hey," Blake called out. "Don't take it to heart. Those two can be a bit..."

'It's fine. I'm used to it now,' he signaled. The silver-haired young man closed his eyes 'I should learn to mind my own business.'

"Dude..."

Silver shook his head. 'I'll be fine. Thanks for caring." He smiled. 'You're a very nice kid.'

Blake pouted. "I'm not a kid. We're the same age."

He chuckled. 'Sorry. Ahh. Seems that I've made you upset too.'

"No. I'm not that angry. Uh. Let's get going." He pointed at his black backpack. "I'm ready to go."

'Should we really leave those two behind? Alone?'

"You saw them. They'll continue to fight whether we're there or not." Blake patted Silver's back. "Come on man. If we stick around we'll be late."

Silver nodded and together they rushed off to school.

Once they arrived several students waiting outside by the front door. The building had no lights on. "What happened?" Blake asked.

"Uh," Melony said, glancing his way. "It seems that the generator broke down. They're trying to fix it before classes begins. But they might cancel school if it takes too long."

"I see," he responded, a tad flustered as he recalled what happened the other day.

They waited a good deal of time before a woman in a black suit finally walked out of the building. "It appears that we'll be having a delay," the lady said, causing several recent arrivals to cheer.

Though there were also some groans. Blake couldn't believe that there were actually people who love school that much.

"Return in an hour," the lady added. "That's when they should have it up."

"Want to go back to Roy and Diane's place?" Blake asked.

Silver shook his head. 'I rather stick around here.' he signed

"You sure?"

"You can communicate with him?" Melony asked. She stared at Silver with wide eyes. "So that's why you never spoke."

Silver nodded.

"Yeah. He can't speak," Blake said.

"I see that now. So." She pushed her hair back, showing off the beauty of her radiant green eyes. "Want to come to to my place while we wait? I mean. You two seemed to have come from a long way."

"You were paying attention?" Blake asked.

Melony's face flushed. "Uh... I was kind of bored waiting so I watched as several of you arrived."

"Oh," Blake said, slightly disappointed.

'So, are we going?' Silver asked.

"Yeah," Blake responded, smiling.

"That's great!" Melony said with a light bounce in her step. "Gives us a chance to get to know each other better. I mean... you are new to this town." She kept her head low. "Goodness. I must be annoying you with my blabbering."

Blake flushed. She was so cute... "It's fine. I... I would love to get to know you better. I mean, I would like to make more friends."

Melony glanced up, a wide smile etched on her face.

The three walked away from school, heading toward the light pink house in the corner of the school grounds. Along the way, they spotted the electricians hard at work in fixing the generator.

"Darn. Seems that it won't turn on. There seems to be something wrong with the power source," one of them said.

"Let's go check the power lines," one of them suggested. The five electricians spread out.

As Blake passed the broken generator, the thing started to act up. It was as if a surge of power had sudden hit it. Suddenly the lights of the school turned back on, causing the electricians to stop in their tracks and look back.

"What in the world?" one of the five said as he noticed the lights flicker on and off.

Blake glanced back. "Oh looks like they fixed it. Sort of."

"Darn it!" Melony whispered under her breath.

Silver made hand signs to Blake.

"Hm? Oh." Blake said. "Hey! We should head back now."

"U-uh. Yeah... I guess," she said with her face cherry red.

Blake turned around quickly and grabbed Silver's arm. "Let's go...!" he said, with the same face as Melony.

"W-wait!" Melony yelled. They both turned around. "Can you um... you know... tell me your name?"

"I-it's Blake. Blake Spencer."

'Oh... Such a handsome name...' Melony thought. In her eyes, Blake was a muscular hunk with shiny cerulean eyes.

"Hey... Hey!" Blake said.

Melony snapped out of her day dream. Blake and Silver were way ahead of her. Melony gasped and began running. "Wait for me!"
