Wooyoung + San ~Crashing Waves~
Trigger Warnings
Blood, mentioned death, injuries. Slightly dark thoughts at some points
San's POV
"Hurry up San, hurry up," I heard Wooyoung whine from out in the lounge room. I sighed but quickened my pace as I put on my shoes, tying up the laces.
"You better hurry San. If you take any longer, I think Wooyoung might just come in here and drag you out himself," Yunho said with a chuckle from the bed he was sitting on reading.
"When Hongjoong Hyung said we were going to Hawaii for vacation, I didn't think it involved Youngie dragging me everywhere and not being able to actually relax," I said with a sigh. We're one week through our three-week vacation in a small place in Hawaii and I haven't had a single day where Wooyoung hasn't taken me out to go explore something.
"You do know you can say no right? I would feel sorry for you but you keep agreeing to go out with him so it's kind of your own fault," Yunho said. I snapped my head up and glared at him in annoyance.
"I'm not wrong," he said with a shrug.
"I can say no to him," I said quietly.
"I highly doubt that. I think it's physically impossible for you to say no to Wooyoung," Yunho said slowly. I straightened up at that with a frown.
"That's not true. I can say no to Wooyoung if I want to," I told him.
"Really? Then prove it. Go tell Wooyoung now that you don't want to go out today, you'd rather rest," Yunho said.
"I can do that if I want to," I said.
"Uh huh. Well, you clearly want to so go do it," Yunho said.
"Fine, I will," I replied, standing up swiftly.
"Oh, and one more thing," Yunho said, stopping me quickly.
"What is it," I asked him.
"When you end up going out with him anyway, you owe me a free dinner," Yunho said. I just scowled at him before leaving the room. I headed out to the lounge room where the rest of the 99-line were sitting together, Wooyoung practically vibrating with excitement.
"San! Finally! Come on, let's get going. I want to go to the beach," Wooyoung said, jumping off the arm of the couch and rushing over. He grabbed my wrist and went to tug me towards the entryway but I didn't move, Yunho's words floating around my head. Wooyoung stopped and turned around with a frown.
"What's wrong? Did you forget something," he asked, his head tilted in confusion. Now's my chance. I just tell him I don't want to go today, like Yunho said.
"Actually I was thinking about today and I don't think I really want to go," I told him. Wooyoung's face dropped immediately and he looked just so, sad. I immediately regretted what I said.
"Just kidding, you should have seen your face," I said quickly, wrapping an arm around his shoulder and tugging him into my side. He immediately melted into it and wrapped his arms around my waist, snuggling his head into my shoulder.
"You're mean," he said with a pout.
"Yeah, yeah, let's get going," I said, patting his head before pulling away.
"Where are you too heading out to today," Hongjoong asked as he walked into the room with Seonghwa.
"We're going to the beach," Wooyoung said happily.
"Both of you." I frowned and turned around to see Yunho leaning against the door frame with a grin.
"Yeah, we'll see you guys later," Wooyoung replied with a nod.
"Stay safe and don't do anything stupid. And don't ruin those shoes," Hongjoong called out after us. Yunho winked at me but I just rolled my eyes and followed Wooyoung to the front door. I'd take Yunho's teasing over Wooyoung being upset any day. We left the house we were staying in and went out onto the street. We went to the bus stop and sat waiting for the bus, cuddling close together as we waited. When the bus finally arrived, we got on and sat together, catching it all the way down to the beach which was about a 45 minute bus ride.
"Are you excited? We haven't been to the beach yet. I heard Hawaii beaches are the best," Wooyoung said with a grin, slipping his hand into mine and linking our fingers together. I smiled softly, squeezing his hand and watching his face light up as he looked around.
"It's just the beach Woo, we've been to so many beaches before," I said with a chuckle.
"Don't be such a downer Sannie," Wooyoung said with a pout. He took a few more seconds before stopping the two of us with a frown.
"What's wrong," I asked quickly. He was quiet for a few seconds before replying.
"I've been forcing you to do this, haven't I," he said quietly.
"What? No, of course not," I replied quickly. It's true, I could say no but I just didn't. Yunho is right, it's my fault for not saying no, my choice.
"That's not true. You weren't kidding earlier were you? Oh god Sannie, I'm so sorry. We can go back, I didn't mean to keep dragging you around everywhere," Wooyoung said quickly.
"Wooyoung, listen to me. If I truly didn't want to come, then I wouldn't have," I said firmly.
"But part of you doesn't want to come right," Wooyoung asked with a small voice.
"I'm a little tired, not gonna lie. But I enjoy spending time with you and I'm happy to be coming with you to the beach, I promise," I said softly. Wooyoung's face lit up once again and he stepped forwards, hugging me tightly.
"Thank you for always coming out with me," he whispered.
"Of course. Any time you want some company, I'm always here for you," I said with a nod.
"I love you," he said with a smile.
"I love you too. Now let's keep going," I said with a soft chuckle, grabbing his hand and pulling him along. It took us around 20 minutes before we finally made it to the beach.
"Look at how beautiful it is here," Wooyoung said happily as he tugged my hand, dragging me forwards. I grinned as well and followed him onto the sand. The day was nice and sunny, the perfect day to come outside and I found that I was actually glad to come out with Wooyoung.
"Come on San, let's make a sandcastle," Wooyoung said. Moments like these really show just how childlike Wooyoung still is. Moments like these also remind me just how childlike I still am as well.
"Let's go," I said with a nod, hurrying after him. We found a nice spot in the sand where it was slightly damp so it could still stick together.
"Sandcastle competition. Whoever makes the best one in half an hour has to buy the other ice cream," I challenged, sticking out my hand for him to shake.
"You're on," he said, shaking my hand swiftly. We got to work quickly, scooping up sand in our hands and placing it down, forming little structures.
"I'm going to make a moat and have an unground tunnel through it," I said with a giggle as I started shaping it out.
"Don't tell me your trade secrets San. I might just steal them," Wooyoung said before cackling loudly. I rolled my eyes but shook my head fondly at him. Truthfully, I may have told him deliberately but that's just my secret.
~~~~~
The verdict ended up being that Wooyoung's sandcastle was the best and I would have to shout the icecream. Such a shame. "We should take a dip in the water," Wooyoung said.
"No, absolutely not. Hongjoong Hyung will kill us if we get these shoes wet," I said, pointing down at our almost brand new shoes that Hongjoong spent a fortune on before our vacation.
"Right, we don't want the wrath of our tiny leader," Wooyoung said with nod.
"Wooyoung, you're just as small as Hongjoong," I pointed out.
"Rude," Wooyoung scoffed.
"But true," I said with a shrug.
"Whatever. Ice cream time," he said with a grin.
"Come on," I said with a nod, holding out my hand. He stood up quickly and grabbed it. We walked along the beach together, just enjoying the sunshine before we saw the storefronts up ahead. We quickly walked up the sand and onto the street where all the stores were. We quickly found an ice cream store and went inside.
"Mint choc," I asked him as I pulled out my wallet.
"Two scoops please San-ah," he replied with a nod. I nodded and walked up to the front, quickly ordering the two ice-creams before heading back to Wooyoung.
"Do you want to eat them here or do you want to go for a walk," I asked him.
"Are you ok to go for a walk or are you too tired," he asked nervously.
"I wouldn't have suggested it if I wasn't ok with it Young-ah, stop stressing," I said softly.
"Ok, let's go," he said happily. We left the store and headed out, walking along a small path on a hill, overlooking the ocean.
"I'm glad Hongjoong Hyung organised this trip," Wooyoung said quietly.
"Well actually, I'm pretty sure Seonghwa Hyung did most of the organising. Hongjoong Hyung just made the suggestions but we all know Seonghwa Hyung is the better at organising," I said. Wooyoung giggled at that before nodding.
"That's true," he said before licking his ice-cream.
"Can I have a taste of yours," he asked me.
"Wooyoung, we got the same flavour," I said with a frown.
"So, yours might taste better," he said with a shrug.
"Seriously Wooyoung? Fine," I said in exasperation. I held my ice-cream out to him and he quickly took a lick.
"Tastes great," he said with a nod.
"Better than yours," I asked him.
"Nope," he said, popping the P.
"You are so weird," I said with a chuckle, shaking my head.
"Yeah but so are you," Wooyoung said happily.
"So am I," I agreed, wrapping my arm around his shoulder and bumping our heads together. We continued walking around until we finished our ice-creams, deciding to head back to the beach, closer to the water.
"Remember, no going into the water," I told Wooyoung.
"That's fine, the water has gone back heaps anyway," Wooyoung replied. Fair enough. Wait what. I snapped my head to the side quickly, looking out to see the water had receded drastically since we were down there less than 30 minutes ago and it was still pulling back.
"Ooo, look over there. Those shells look so cool," Wooyoung said, moving forwards to go out onto the sand where the water once was. My hand instinctively shot out, grasping his wrist and tugging him to my side.
"What's wrong? I want to look at the shells," he said.
"Wooyoung, that's not normal. The ocean doesn't just do that randomly," I whispered, scanning the horizon. I remember being told something, something about what happens when the ocean line pulls back. Wooyoung went quiet and I could hear the faint sound of rumbling.
"Something is wrong Woo, something's very wrong," I said quietly, taking a slow step back and moving Wooyoung with me. I listened closer and I picked up on the faint sound of screaming so I looked along the beach more to see people running away.
"Sannie. San what's that," Wooyoung asked me suddenly. I turned back to him to see that his face had gone extremely pale as he looked out over the water. I frowned and turned back to the ocean, my heart skipping a beat in my chest. In the distance there was a wave that was steadily approaching the shore, only it wasn't just a wave. It was a massive wave, as tall as a building and it was growing steadily.
"Tsunami. WOOYOUNG RUN," I screamed, tightening my grip on his wrist and yanking him away from the shore. My heart was pounding in my chest as I ran as fast as I could, practically dragging Wooyoung with me as he struggled to keep up. Under normal circumstances I would slow down but right now. Right now we're probably going to die and I want to give Wooyoung the best possible chance that I can. I can live with dying, but not with Wooyoung dying.
"San we aren't going to make it," Wooyoung cried out as we started running down a main street. I glanced back quickly and gasped as I saw the wave had passed the shoreline and already hit the street. He's right, there's no way we can outrun this. We need to try and get as high as we can to be safer. My eyes landed on a concrete building with ledges and an abandoned ladder beside it, like someone had been doing construction on it.
"Youngie, come on," I said, dragging him towards it. We don't have long, less than a minute probably before that wave hits us.
"Climb," I yelled, yanking Wooyoung in front of me as we reached the ladder.
"Bu-."
"CLIMB NOW YOU IDIOT," I screamed at him. I felt bad when I saw the hurt in his eyes but his safety is all that I am worried about right now. He started climbing quickly and I followed along, going as fast as I could without accidentally knocking into Wooyoung. I could hear the sounds of the tsunami crashing into the buildings it was passing, people screaming in the streets but I did my best to block it out. Wooyoung's foot slipped suddenly, missing the step and he slid down but I steadied him quickly. My eyes flicked to the side and my heart stopped at what I saw. Our time was up. I grabbed the bottom of Wooyoung's thighs, shoving him up and over the closest ledge, just in time as the wave crashed into the building.
Wooyoung's POV
I was scared, terrified. We were on vacation, we were supposed to be relaxing, not running for our lives from a giant wave. My heart was pounding as I rushed up the ladder, trying to get as high as I could. I was going so fast that I lost my footing, slipping down and almost falling but I felt a hand on my back, pushing me forwards and holding me up. I took a breath and went to keep climbing but was suddenly jolted up and over the side of the balcony beside me.
I hit the ground with a groan and went to sit up but there was a bang and it suddenly felt like I was under water. I was underwater. I was jolted to the other side of balcony, my head swimming with the wiplash. I tried to get my footing but the wave was too powerful and I felt myself lift and go over the other side of the balcony.
My life flashed before my eyes but I managed to grab hold of the edge, holding it tightly as the water continued to wash past. The pressure was almost too much and I felt my hands beginning to slip but just before I gave up, the pressure died down and the water was gone, leaving me coughing and spluttering and hanging over the edge of a balcony five stories up. I held back a sob as I clung on tight, knowing I wasn't safe yet given how high up I was. I glanced down to see the raging waters below me. There were overturned cars, floating bits of wood, doors, bins, anything you could think of floating in the water, rushing what seems to be downstream of the waterflow.
My arms were scratched up from scraping against the concrete but I mustered up my strength and somehow managed to pull myself up to the side of the balcony, hooking my armpits over it and holding myself up and I panted. I took a deep breath before pulling myself up more, letting out a cry of frustration but I got myself high enough to hook my leg over the edge. I tugged myself again and fell over the side, onto the balcony.
It was filled with water to which I didn't realise so my head went under but I stood back up quickly, coughing up a little bit of water. I leant back against the side of the balcony and panted, trying to catch my breath. I was sniffling so I quickly wiped my eyes, taking deep breaths to calm myself down. I can't believe that just happened. I looked over my arms to make sure they weren't too bad before looking over the rest of me to make sure there wasn't going to be any life-threatening issues. I let out a breath of relief as I found that I was somehow ok after that. San pushing me over the edge of the balcony protected me from most of the harm.
I sniffled again and shuffled to the front edge, looking around at the town, my stomach dropping at what I saw. There were a few concrete buildings that were damaged but still standing like the one I was on but the rest of it, were not so lucky. Buildings were destroyed, trees everywhere, just about everything you could imagine destroyed. It looked like a scene from a movie, only it wasn't a movie, this was real life.
"Sannie, wh-." My mouth closed with a snap and my blood turned to ice. San. I quickly waded over to the other edge where San and I had been climbing up, hoping with all my heart that he would be there. My hand flew to my mouth and I held back a sob as I saw nothing was there, no San, not even the ladder.
"S-San. Sannie. SAN. SAN WHERE ARE YOU," I screamed, my eyes scanning the water below. He was wearing a light blue hoodie, something that would stan out to me but I couldn't see it anyway. Oh god, I'm a horrible person. I was so busy worrying about myself that I didn't even bother thinking about the person who could very well have saved my life. The person who could be...
I shook my head to stop the thoughts, wiping my eyes quickly and taking a deep breath to calm down. I can't panic. I can't do this right now, not when San needs me. I've always been like the little brother in our relationship, the one who is constantly protected. San always does everything he can to look after me, make sure I'm happy. I do not get to panic right now. Right now I need to figure out how to get out of this building and to go find San. I refuse to believe that he's gone, he can't be gone. He won't be gone.
I looked around over the side of the balcony, trying to find a way to get down to the ground. I can't exactly go looking for San when I'm on the balcony of a building. I couldn't find anything and I groaned in frustration before turning around and internally hitting myself. There's a door. I quickly moved over to the door and turned the handle, pushing to try and open the door but it wouldn't budge. I groaned in frustration and tried to push harder but it still wouldn't budge. I took a step back and closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. I need to think rationally right now, I can't just panic at the first obstacle. I cannot be like those stupid main characters who don't think rationally and miss the obvious things. I opened my eyes again and assessed the door, noticing it was glass. I can just break it, I don't need to open it. I waded around the balcony, looking around to try and find anything that could help me.
By sheer luck I found some weird metal pole and I pulled it out of the water. I moved back to the door and swung the pole back, smashing it into the door. It cracked but didn't quite break so I swung the pole into it again, making it shatter. I yelped and tripped back, falling onto my bottom in the water but I stood up quickly. I walked into the room quickly, finding there was quite a bit of water in it as well but it seemed to be lowering. I hurried to the front door of the apartment and prayed to myself that it would be able to open as it wasn't a glass door. I turned the knob and pushed it, thankful that with a forceful shove it opened enough for me to slip out. The halls weren't too full of water so I was able to get through to the staircase that lead down stairs. There was water on the stairs but it seemed to be going down so I hurried down them, making sure not to slip along the way.
When I got down to the last level, the water was quite high and wasn't going down at all. It didn't stop me though, I just swam as quick as I could to the front entrance. The windows were all shattered already so it wasn't hard to get outside. But getting outside wasn't the hard part, the hard part was still yet to come. The minute I got out of the hotel, the current from the water knocked me off balance and I went under, inhaling some water as I wasn't prepared. I quickly swam up and latched onto the closest thing to me which turned out to be a bed. It was someone's bed from their room.
I held onto it tightly and kept my head above water, floating down stream slightly. I made sure to keep my head above water, looking around quickly to try and catch any glimpse of a light blue hoodie. It was hard to see anything given the rushing water and the debris everywhere. I cried out in pain as I felt my leg scrape against something sharp.
I realised that it probably wasn't the best idea to be hanging off the edge of the bed so I started to climb up onto the bed. However, when I gripped the other side to pull myself up, the bed started to flip. I let go of it in an instant and felt myself get pulled under the water now that I didn't have the bed to hold on to. My hand shot up quickly and I managed to grab the bottom of the bed and pull myself up, gasping for breath. I tried again to get onto the bed but with a different tactic and this time I managed to get on. I had a better vantage point now so I looked around, able to see more that was around me.
My stomach dropped and I felt bile crawl up my throat as I saw someone lying half out of their water on their back. There was a large metal pole protruding from their chest. There was a lot of blood and their eyes were open but they weren't moving. It was clear that they were dead. It's ok, it's not San. It's not San. I know that sounds horrible but it was all I could think in the moment. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to calm myself down. I need to keep focused, I need to find San.
"HELP. SOMEONE HELP. ANYONE." My head shot up at the cries for help, searching to try and find the source. It wasn't San, the voice was too high pitched to be San, it sounds like a girl. It's not San, but I can't just leave them. I could tell the direction it was coming from but the bed was still continuing down stream. I took a deep breath before sliding off the bed. The current started to push me downstream straight away but I fought back, swimming sideways and grabbing onto whatever I could to help pull myself along.
"HELP ME. PLEASE HELP."
"C-COMING. I'M COMING," I yelled out. I got closer to the voice and was thankful to find that there was more objects and less water so the current wasn't strong. I climbed up onto some things, being careful of where I was stepping.
"Where are you," I called out.
"Over here," they called out. I hurried over to where it came for and gasped at what I saw. It was a lady, probably mid 30's and she was lying on her back, trapped under something that I couldn't tell what it was.
"Thank god. I need you to help me get out from under this. I don't think I can feel my legs. They've been trapped under this thing," she said quickly. I bit my lip nervously, my mind racing as I tried to figure out what she said. She talked to quickly.
"Um, can you slow down," I asked her.
"Slow down? Slow down what? I could be dying here right now, are you stupid," she said. That's not slowing down.
"I don't know English well," I said nervously. I could see the shift in her face as she took in my words.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. Ok then, you want me to speak slower," she said slowly and I finally managed to catch what she was saying. I nodded quickly at her words.
"Do you have a phone," she asked me. Phone, I have that. I nodded and reached into my pocket, pulling it out. It was cracked but miraculously still working. Good thing Hongjoong got us phones that are quite waterproof.
"You need to call 911 and have them come here," she told me. Call 911, the emergency services. I nodded and dialled quickly, hearing it ring before it was answered.
"911, what is your emergency." We're in the middle of a tsunami and my best friend is missing. And this lady is hurt. I quickly held the phone out for the lady to talk to the man given that I wouldn't be able to understand completely. She spent a few minutes talking before she relaxed and looked to me.
"They're coming, we're going to be ok," she said. They will come for this lady, I don't need to stay here.
"I go. My friend," I told her.
"You're going," she asked.
"Yes. You have help. I need to find my friend," I replied with a nod.
"Ok. Thank you, you may have helped save my life. Please be safe," she said slowly. I nodded at that and turned to walk away but stopped when she called out to me. I turned back around to see her holding my phone out.
"Keep this. They know where I am," she said. I nodded and opened grabbed it from her before patting her head.
"Good luck," I whispered. She nodded and gave me a small smile before I left.
~~~~~
An hour. I've been searching for an hour and there's been no sign of San. I've come across a few other people, both alive and dead and I've done my best to help those who are alive. I stayed with them until I knew they had help and then I moved on. I was trying not to panic but I couldn't help it. I can't find San and for the people that I have found, more have been dead than living. San was on that ladder when the wave hit, that doesn't exactly scream great odds. But that doesn't matter. I can do this, I can find Sannie and he's going to be ok.
"Hey kid. Hey, over here. I turned around at the sound of someone yelling and I saw a bunch of firefighters.
"We have another survivor," one yelled out. They all came over to me and started to check me out but I quickly pushed them away.
"I'm fine. Not hurt," I said.
"We still need to check you out and then get you to a safe z-."
"Wait, wait, wait. I recognise him. He's from a kpop group."
"It's Wooyoung right," the man asked, turning to me after he cut in. Oh thank god, he speaks korean.
"Yeah," I replied with a nod.
"Are you hurt anywhere," he asked.
"Not badly. I got as safe as I could before the wave hit," I replied quickly.
"That's good. You need to come with us, you're safe now. We're going to get you to a safe zone," he told me.
"No, no I can't. I was with San when the wave hit but he didn't get to safety in time," I told him.
"You're looking for him," he asked and I nodded quickly.
"What was he wearing," he asked.
"He was wearing a light blue hoodie, some grey pants and these shoes," I said, nodding down.
"Oh no, the shoes. Hongjoong Hyung is going to kill me for ruining these shoes," I groaned.
"Wooyoung, I highly doubt that's something he's going to worry about in this situation," the man said.
"We'll keep looking for San but you need to get somewhere safe," he told me.
"No, I'm doing that. I'm not leaving until I find Sannie," I said quickly.
"Wooyoung it isn-."
"He sacrificed his safety to save me. I'm not stopping until I know he's ok. Until I know what has happened to him," I said.
"Give me a sec," he said. I nodded and he turned back to the others and started talking to them. After a few minutes they pat his back and he turned back to me.
"I can't stop you from looking but I'm not going to let you go alone. The rest of my team are going to continue on and I'm going to come with you. We'll keep looking for San but we'll also look for others and help them ok," he said.
"Thank you," I said, letting out a breath of relief.
"Put these on," one of the other firefighters said, holding out a jacket and a helmet. I quickly put them on, shivering slightly as I realised how cold I was.
"Zip it up, you don't want to get too cold," the man told me. It was at that point that I realised I still didn't know the guys name.
"What's your name," I asked him, zipping up the coat.
"Jaxson. I grew up in Korea for a few years, that's why I speak Korean," he explained and I nodded.
"Where did you come from by the way. Run me through what happened when the Tsunami hit," Jaxson said.
"San and I were by the beach when we saw it coming. We ran but we knew we wouldn't make it to safety so San told me to climb up a ladder onto a building. We didn't have much time so he shoved me over the edge of one of the balconies just before the wave hit. It protected me but San wasn't so lucky. He was still on the ladder so he would've been wiped out," I explained. I saw Jaxson' face drop slightly and I got nervous.
"Wooyoung, you know I can't promise you anything right. I don't want to get your hopes up when from what it sounds like, that would've been a horrible fall," Jaxson said quietly. My heart stopped at that and I tried not to panic too much but his words weren't very encouraging.
"Wooyoung, I don't mean to scare you but I just want to make sure you aren't given false hope," Jaxson said.
"No, I refuse to believe that. San's ok, I know he's going to be ok," I said with a firm nod. He can't be dead, he can't be dead.
"Ok, let's keep looking then," Jaxson said. I nodded and we continued wading through the water.
~~~~~
We spent another hour searching but we weren't getting far. We kept stopping for people we found and Jaxson would help them and remain there until more help arrived. I'm a horrible person, I know that. But I couldn't stop thinking about San and it was frustrating me that we kept stopping. It's disgusting but I didn't care about these people, I only cared about San.
"Come on, over here," Jaxson said, hurrying over to another group of people. I didn't follow, I just remained where I was. This is taking too long, we're stopping too much. I sighed as I watched him going to help them. They were already in a group, they will be safer than San. I need to prioritise San and Jaxson isn't doing that. I turned around quickly and ducked down the alley. We had been getting too far and already double back so I headed back in the direction of the beach. I just need to find San, I need to find him.
There was still so much water so it was a struggle to get through everything, not to mention everything else that was an obstacle in the water. I groaned out in frustration, yelling and slamming my fist on the top of a car with a cry. It's been hours. I'm running out of time, I need to find him.
"SAN. SANNIE," I screamed out before dropping to my knees in the water and letting out a sob. The water came up to my shoulders but I didn't care, what's the point. San's as good as gone at this point. I don't deserve to be here, not when San's gone. I dropped my head into my hands and continued to sob when something suddenly caught my attention. There was a tapping sound nearby but it sounded slightly familiar. I did my best to calm down, quietening my sobs to be able to hear the noise. It was definitely a tapping sound, something repetitive. I stood up quickly and stumbled through the water over to a pipeline along a building. I leant down and listened closely to hear the tapping more. Why does it sound so familiar.
I continued listening closely, frowning in frustration. I know this, I know this beat. Why does it sound so bloody familiar? It took me a few more seconds before it clicked in my mind. It's Wonderland. The tapping is the beat to Wonderland. San.
"San. Sannie," I yelled out, running forwards, following the pipeline. I stumbled a few times in the water but I kept going, hearing the tapping get louder the further I got. He's alive. This has to mean he's alive.
"San-ah where are you," I called out. There was no reply and the tapping suddenly stopped, my heart along with it. I need it. I need the tapping to find him.
"SAN PLEASE," I screamed in fear.
"H-Help," I heard a wea voice call out. I gasped and rushed forwards, climbing on top of a pile of random objects. It was from there that might eyes caught on something light blue.
"Sannie," I whispered, stumbling down, trying to make sure I didn't get hurt but also wanting to get there quickly. I jumped down the last part and hurried around the last corner, my breath catching in my throat as my eyes landed on him. He was laying down on the ground, his legs and waist were trapped under something but the rest of him was uncovered. His eyes were closed, his head turned to the side with his arms sprawled spread out, a broken bat in one hand. There was blood all over his hoodie and there was water pooled around him, though thankfully with the way he was angled, his head was still above it.
For a minute I thought I was too late, that he was already gone but then his eyes slipped open. He blinked a few times before his eyes locked on mine. We were both quiet as we looked at each other before I noticed a single tear slip down San's face, clearing a path through the dirt, blood and grime on his face.
"You're ok," he whispered, the bat falling from his hand as he reached out slowly to me. I almost broke down at that but I didn't, knowing I needed to continue being strong. If I break down San will go into protective mode but right now he's the one that needs to be protected. I can be the older brother for once.
"Yeah San-ah, I'm ok. You saved me when you pushed me over the edge," I told him as I slipped my hand into his.
"I'm glad. Didn't want you hurt," he whispered.
"And I'm not. You scared me though, I've been searching for you for ages," I whispered, using my hand to brush his hair back.
"Sorry. How long is ages," he asked.
"A few hours at least," I replied quietly. His face scrunched up at that and he turned his head into my hand.
"It's been that long. Why didn't you get somewhere safe," he asked.
"Because I needed to find you. I couldn't leave you out here, I needed to find you," I said firmly.
"You shouldn't have come here, you should have gone somewhere safe," San said.
"Save the lecture, that's never going to work. I was terrified when I looked and saw that you were gone. You cannot seriously think I wouldn't have done everything in power to find you," I said, squeezing his hand.
"It's my job to protect you San. You should've made sure you we-."
"San please stop it. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you died," I said quickly, cutting him off.
"It's not like we can do anything anyway, you're already here," San whispered.
"Exactly, now tell me where it hurts," I said. San chuckled weakly and I noticed more tears fall down his face.
"What? What's wrong," I asked quickly.
"Nothing, it's fine Youngie," he whispered. I felt myself snap at that.
"San I just spent hours walking through water, seeing so many dead bodies and picturing you as one of them. I am 23 years old Choi San, I am not a child. You did something stupid and reckless to sacrifice yourself for me now stop treating me like a child and let me get you help. If you die than ATEEZ is over, you're family loses you and I will be filled with a lifetime of guilt that will probably take over my life and consume me until it becomes to much and-."
"Ok. Ok, I get it," San interrupted tiredly.
"Good, now tell me where it hurts," I said.
"That's the thing Wooyoung, it doesn't. It doesn't hurt," San whispered. My throat closed up slightly at that and I looked back to where San was pinned down. Does that mean he's paralysed?
"Th-That's ok. It's a good thing, at least you aren't in pain," I said softly, brushing his hair back again.
"I mean I can feel your hand, so that's good right," San said quietly, his teeth chattering slightly. I glanced over him, remembering how he has been stuck like this in the water for hours already. I quickly pulled off the coat I was wearing and laid it on top of him, giving him as much warmth as I could.
"I was going to ask about that, why do you have a firefighter jacket," San asked me.
"I met someone who was going to help me find you," I told him.
"Where'd he go," San asked.
"He was taking too long, I needed to find you," I whispered. San sighed but nodded.
"Would've helped to get some help," San whispered. I nodded, remembering that we needed help. I quickly pulled out my phone and pressed the button on a special app Jaxson had shown me that sends location to emergency services in natural disasters.
"Help is going to come," I told him. San nodded at that and sighed.
"Wooyoung-ah," he whispered softly. I glanced down at him with and squeezed his hand softly.
"Yeah, what's up," I asked him.
"You know I love you so much, right," he said.
"Don't you dare start saying your goodbyes San, I'm not having it," I said quickly.
"I'm scared Wooyoung, I don't want to die," he said with a whimper, tears falling down his face quickly. I made a noise of sympathy and put caution into the wind, lying down beside him into the water and cuddling up to his side.
"Help is coming, you're going to be ok," I said, snuggling my head against his shoulder.
"I'm so glad you're ok," he said.
"I'm just glad I found you. Do you remember much about what happened," I asked him.
"Yeah. I remember the tsunami and I pushing you over the edge to get you safer, then the wave hit me. I got flung from the ladder I was underwater. I smashed into something and then everything went blank. I woke up like this and I just laid here. Then I heard your voice. I was too tired to call out so I started playing wonderland on the pipes," San explained. I frowned and sat up slightly, lifting his head a little to check the back of it and finding a little bit of blood pooled there. My heart broke and I dropped my head down on top of his, kissing it gently.
"I love you so much Sannie. You're going to be ok. I know you're going to be ok," I whispered. San sniffled but nodded slightly. We lay together like that for a few minutes before San spoke up.
"When did you lose a shoe," he asked me. I frowned and glanced down to find that I was indeed missing a shoe.
"Well shit. Hongjoong Hyung is really going to kill me now," I whined, making San chuckle lightly.
"I can't believe that's seriously what you're thinking about right now," he said.
"You're the one who said not to get them wet. I've just lost one completely," I said with a sigh.
"You are such an idiot," San said before he suddenly burst into tears.
"San, what's wrong? Are you hurting," I asked him.
"No, no I'm just relieved. I'm so relieved you're ok," San said, shifting slightly to hug me. He cried out in pain so I quickly closed the distance so he didn't have to move much.
"Don't strain yourself Sannie," I whispered.
"I'm so tired Wooyoung," he cried. My heart clenched at that and I held him tighter.
"Please don't sleep San, I need you to stay awake just a bit longer ok," I said.
"I just wanted to make sure you were ok. You're ok now," he said with a sigh. I went to reply but I froze as I noticed something odd. The water was rising slowly around us.
"San," I said quickly. I sat up and pulled San up as well, ignoring his slight groan of pain. The water was rising rapidly and would've put his head underwater.
"Shit, this should've happened ages ago," San gasped out.
"What, what is it," I asked him.
"The water is finding it's way back to the ocean, or at least some of it is," San said.
"Is that bad," I asked him.
"It's going to be fine but Wooyoung you need to find some high ground for a bit again ok," San said.
"Fuck no," I said immediately.
"Wooyoung hurry," San said.
"Tell me what's happening," I said quickly.
"The water is coming back Wooyoung, this place is going to be underwater again for a bit," San rushed out. I heard some noises and the sound of rushing water and I looked down to see San's panicked eyes.
"We're going to be ok, just hold your breath. I love you" I said quickly. I drew in a deep breath before throwing my body on top of San's protecting him as best as I could just as I felt a wave of water smash over me. I almost got flung away but I felt San's arms wrap tightly around me and I held him back just as tight. It felt like hours that we were stuck like that under the water and I almost drew in a breath but I felt San's arms around me and his body beneath mine. I'm protecting him now.
I gasped for breath once the water finally receded, hearing San do the same. I coughed a few times before dropping my head down onto San's shoulder, shivering slightly. San's heart was beating beneath my ear and I squeezed my eyes closed, holding him tightly.
"Stuff Tsunami's," I whispered. San didn't react to that, not even a chuckle. I frowned at that and mustered up my energy to lift my head and look at him, my heart dropping as I saw his eyes were closed and his face lax.
"S-San. San. No, don't do this, not now," I said, cupping his face and shaking it but he didn't move.
"Over here, we've found two." I felt arms on mine, lifting me up and pulling me away from San. I screamed out at that and tried to get back to him but I could do nothing as I was pulled away.
"I can't find a pulse." No, no, no.
"SAN. SAN DON'T LEAVE ME. PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME," I yelled. San was suddenly gone from my view as people surrounded him and I started sobbing, feeling the energy leave my body and I stopped fighting. I was filled with a sense of dread and guilt. I didn't make it. I let out one last sob before everything went back
Hongjoong's POV
"It's San and Wooyoung, they're tough. They'll be ok, right," Mingi said with a sniffle where he was sitting on the couch beside Yunho and Jongho.
"They were down at the beach Mingi. They were right where the tsunami hit. They're as good as dead," Yeosang spat angrily before getting up and rushing off. We heard the door slam down the hall.
"I'll um, I'll go talk to him," Seonghwa whispered, sniffling slightly before getting up. It still doesn't feel real. Jongho saw the warning about the tsunami on the news when it first happened and called us over. We were just far enough out to not be affected but San and Wooyoung had gone to the beach. We were all hit hard by that and it's been hours, hours of not knowing anything. Seonghwa and I have tried to keep things calm, to hold it together but tensions were high. My mind kept drifting to Wooyoung's laugh, San's smile. What if I never see them again?
"Don't worry Hyung, Yeosang Hyung is just scared," Jongho said softly. I glanced over to see Yunho hugging Mingi tightly and rubbing his arm gently.
"I don't want them to be gone," Mingi whimpered.
"Have faith Mingi. All we can do is have faith," I told him softly. He nodded and it went quiet again until my phone started ringing. I sighed and rubbed my face before standing up and pulling my phone from my pocket, leaving the room to answer it.
"Hi, is this Kim Hongjoong?" An English speaker, ok.
"Yes this is," I replied.
"This is Sasha Nelson from The Queen's Medical Center. I have a Jung Wooyoung who was just admitted and you are his emergency contact. He was a victim in the Tsunami that hit earlier today." My heart skipped a beat in my chest and I took a deep breath to stop from panicking.
"Jung Wooyoung is one of my band members, practically my little brother. Is he ok," I asked hurriedly.
"Mr Jung is in a stable condition but his doctors would have a better update for you if you can here," the lady said. Ok, Wooyoung is ok. But what about San?
"We will be there but is there another patient there with Wooyoung? Did you find anyone," I asked hurriedly.
"Mr Jung was found with another man, early twenties with black hair," she said. I thought back to this morning, what they were wearing.
"Did he have a light blue hoodie," I asked.
"Yes he did. Can you identify this man," she asked.
"Yes, his name is Choi San. He's 23 years old, he's another one of my bandmates," I said.
"Is he ok," I added quickly.
"I would suggest you come down here for a longer discussion." My eyes welled up with tears at her words but I held them in.
"Can you at least tell me if he's alive," I whispered.
"He's in a critical condition sir but he is alive. The doctors will tell you more," she said.
"Thank you," I said before hanging up. They're both alive. San is in a bad way but he's alive. I drew in a deep breath to muster my resolve before walking back towards the loungeroom.
"Seonghwa, Yeosang, get in here. Now," I said quickly. I waited a bit before they walked in, my heart cracking when I saw Yeosang. His eyes were rimmed red and he had tears flowing down his face as he clung to Seonghwa. Jongho immediately moved from the couch and Yeosang took his spot, cuddling up to Mingi who held him tightly. I grabbed Seonghwa's hand and pulled him over to sit on the coffee table in front of the others as Jongho sat on the arm of the couch.
"What's going on," Yunho asked.
"I just got a call from a hospital," I started, seeing the others all tense up.
"Wooyoung is there. He's stable right now but the doctors will need to tell us more," I explained. Yeosang cried out, sobbing as he clung to Mingi. Jongho squeezed down beside him and held him tightly as well.
"What about San," Yunho asked. I hesitated at that, seeing Yeosang was already in such a state.
"No, please no," Seonghwa gasped out.
"He isn't dead. But it doesn't seem too good from what I heard. The lady said he's in a critical condition but wouldn't tell me much," I said.
"We need to go to the hospital," Mingi said.
"I know, so let's get going," I said with a firm nod.
Waiting was agonising. Sitting in that private waiting room, waiting to hear any news about what was going on with our boys. We found out that Wooyoung had a mild concussion, some scrapes and bruises but he was ok. San on the other hand, he had to have emergency surgery. His spleen ruptured and he broke his leg, along with splitting his head open. The doctors said he was lucky it wasn't worse given what happened but it still wasn't good. The main cause for concern was the ruptured spleen but medical attention may have gotten there just in time.
"Kim Hongjoong." My head snapped up, expecting a doctor but I saw a firefighter instead. I frowned in confusion but stood up and walked over.
"Hi, I'm Jaxson. I um, I met Wooyoung earlier today," he said. I relaxed at that.
"Were you the one who saved him," I asked.
"I'm pretty sure San is the one who saved him, I just came across him," Jaxson replied.
"That um, that sounds like something that would happen. How did you come across him," I asked.
"Wooyoung was searching for San. They got separated so Wooyoung went looking for him. I told him that he needed to get to safety but he wouldn't listened so I went searching with him. He disappeared suddenly but by the sounds of it, he found San. He also mentioned something about ruining shoes and you being angry," Jaxson said. Classic Wooyoung.
"That also sounds like something that would happen," I said with a sigh.
"I just wanted to offer my support, give you guys some comfort if I could given how far from home you are," he said.
"Thank you, I appreciate it," I said with a sigh.
"Hyung." I turned around at Yunho's call to see a doctor standing by the boys. I hurried back over to them, Jaxson following.
"I want to give you the heads up. These boys are Korean and while they speak pretty good English, this is a stressful situation for them and some pretty new stuff so don't talk too fast or in too complicated words," Jaxson said. I smiled softly at that and nodded thankfully. I can understand better than the others so I appreciate the help.
"Well I have good news and good news," the doctor said with a smile and I let out a breath of relief.
"Mr Jung will be completely fine. He's coming off the sedative he was given and you will be able to see him shortly," the doctor said.
"And San, what about San," I asked.
"Mr Choi's surgery went really well. We removed his spleen and braced his leg. He lost a lot of blood but he should make a full recovery. As per request we put the two of them in the same room together as Mr Choi is now in a stable condition," the doctor said.
"Can we go see them." I glanced over at Yeosang in surprise. He isn't usually confident in speaking English around people.
"Right this way," the doctor said with a nod.
~~~~~
It was hard seeing the two of them unconscious in hospital beds, even more so with how battered San looked. But they're alive and they're going to be fine. We were all sitting around and waiting for about 20 minutes before the silence was broken by a small voice.
"Sannie." Seonghwa and I shot up in an instant and rushed to Wooyoung's beside.
"Sannie's ok Woo, you found him and help got there in time," I said quickly.
"H-His heart stopped. Hyungie they said his heart stopped," Wooyoung whimpered, holding his arms out to me. I stepped forward quickly and hugged him tightly, allowing him to cuddle up to me as best as he could.
"It did but he's going to be ok and so are you," I said softly. Wooyoung burst into tears and held me tightly. I let out a breath of relief at finally having him close to me, rubbing his back.
"I'm proud of you Youngie," I whispered.
"Hyung, Hyung I'm so sorry," Wooyoung sniffled. I gasped and pulled back in shock.
"Wooyoung, there was a tsunami, a natural disaster. Literally nothing was your fault," I said quickly.
"I lost one Hyung," Wooyoung said sadly.
"Lost what," I asked him.
"I lost my shoe, the one you got me," Wooyoung said. I froze at that before bursting into laughter.
"Wooyoung you idiot, I don't care about the shoes. I thought you were dead," I said, the laughter turning into sobs as I hugged him again tightly.
"We're all just so glad you're alive," I said.
"Sannie saved me. We were climbing up a ladder to get to safety but it was too late. He shoved me over to edge but got wiped out himself," Wooyoung said.
"That sounds like San," Yeosang said quietly as he walked over. Wooyoung pulled away from me and cuddled up to Yeosang as he laid down on the bed beside him.
"San's going to be ok though right," Wooyoung asked.
"I'm ok." My head snapped to the side to see San's eyes open and watching us.
"Sore, but ok," he whispered, a small smile slipping onto his face. They're ok. Both of them are ok. I rushed over to San and hugged him delicately, dropping my head down to his forehead and kissing his nose softly.
"I love you baby, I'm so glad you're ok," I whispered.
"Love you too Hyungie."
A/N
It's been over two months since I last did a oneshot which will most likely be what it's like for a while. There are going to be some changes to this fic.
First of all, I apologise to those who have made requests but I don't think I will be getting to them at all. This fic is kind of on the backburner for my other proper stories that I'm doing at the moment.
I will be updating here at random. Literally just whenever random inspiration strikes me and I think of a oneshot that I would like to write. Once again, sorry to those who have requested already and were expecting it to be written
On that note, here is a random oneshot that I got inspired to write. It's quite long for a oneshot but I hope you enjoyed it anyway
I tried to get in a few different point of views to get a wider scope of what was going on
I also added Hongjoong's POV to show what was happening with the others while they were waiting which I've found you guys ask for generally so I hope that was something you wanted
Let me know what you thought of this oneshot and what your favourite parts were.
