CHAPTER THREE; DREAMING
Frankly, River was a bit nervous climbing up the tree by Ren's window. First, what if he fell? That wouldn't be great at all.
But on top of that, he wasn't sure if he could handle the pain of seeing the girl he loved so broken up. It shattered his being seeing her bawling, especially when she opened the window for him.
The moonlight was illuminating her face, showing her bloodshot eyes and tears running down her pale cheeks. Honestly, she looked beautiful even in her most vulnerable moments.
Ren took his hand, pulling him in, "Thanks River."
"You know I'll always be here for you, Ren. Always." River replied sincerely, gently wiping the tears off her face.
As quietly as possible, Ren laid besides River, venting out her feelings to the boy next to her. The space was cramped, especially when Ren's bed was a small twin sized. But River didn't mind, he knew this was the closest he'd get to her.
"I-I'm just so angry." Ren stuttered out, a few hiccups coming here and there. She's finally calming, and deep down, she knew it was because of River.
"Shh, I know." River mumbled softly, hugging her tightly. If anything, they were spooning each other. To be honest, Keanu had already lost Ren when he asked out Jennifer.
"It just makes me livid that he thinks it's okay to throw that word around like nothing! How can he say he loves me if he's with her?" Ren angrily rambles out, finally feeling the pressure being relief from her chest.
"I think he's confused." River replies, still grasping onto Ren tightly. The moment wasn't sexual, but intimate it was. It was personal and held so much emotions, and he was sure he'd never forget it.
"What makes you think that?" Ren timidly questions, the anger from her core finally simmering down.
"Well, he hasn't had much girlfriends. You know that too, and Jennifer is his first. They'll never last." River responded, thinking back at Keanu's impulsive deserve to hook up with Jennifer.
"Yeah, I guess, but I haven't had a boyfriend either. I don't even know what I'm feeling, or if he's right one." Ren mentioned as she blinked away sleepiness.
She didn't want to fall asleep. Truthfully, she loved talking to River as much as she loved talking to Keanu. His presence lulled her into a sense of comfort and warmth, almost the same way she felt around Keanu.
"You'll find someone, Ren. Someone will loved you–I know it. You're beautiful, intelligent, and so humorous. I could listen to you for hours on ends, even if it's about Wonder Woman." River reveals, slightly worried about the risk he's taking.
What if she pushes him away?
"I sure hope so too. I love talking to you too, Riv." Ren replies back, and it makes River's heart swell up. He loves her so much, but she's so damn oblivious.
"I'm glad you're my friend, Ren. You've been the light guiding me since..." River said, his voice suddenly growing quiet.
"Since?"
"Since Martha." River finished, pushing aside the old hurt. You see, Martha was River's ex-girlfriend, perhaps even first love. Unfortunately, the relationship between them came to a bitter end when she moved away.
For a long time, it was a very sore subject for River. But time had mended his broken heart, and unknowingly the brunette next to him had put the pieces back together.
"Do you miss her?" Ren inquired, feeling this ugly feeling creep within her heart.
"A piece of me will always miss her. She was my first, y'know. I miss her as a friend too. But I've come to terms and accepted what happened between her and me." River explained to Ren quietly.
"I wish I knew what that meant–love. You've experienced it, but me? I'll always be stuck by myself, especially with Jennifer around." Ren said, feeling the pain seep into her words. She shifted out of the position they were in, turning to face the blue-eyed boy.
"I'm with you, Ren. I promise you'll never be alone." And at that moment, River wished he had stuttered the 'I love you' at Ren. But he didn't, mostly because he was still scared of the taste of bitter rejection.
"You know, how earlier, when you said I was your guiding light? Well, I think you're mine too." Ren said, before sleepiness consumed her, bring her melancholy dreams.
Dreams repeating the day Keanu left her. But deep down, Ren knew she felt a shift in her heart.
Even in denial, she knew that Keanu wasn't the only person who had a piece of her heart now.
River glanced at the sleeping girl, and let out a sigh. He should left, but he couldn't remove himself from the embrace Ren pulled him in.
Instead, he let himself join her in dreamland.
Keanu had thought calling Ren would had made him feel better, but it didn't. Instead, he laid restless in his bed. It was well passed midnight, and the sheets still smelt like Jennifer.
But even with the blonde girl's lingering scent, all he can think of is Ren's heartbroken voice. He couldn't understand it, what had changed?
Why was suddenly everything so drastically different? Even with Jennifer's embraces or kisses, he felt hollow and cold. Almost as if someone had stolen something from him, but he didn't realize until it was too late.
At first, Jennifer was great. She's kind and she's beautiful, what more could you ask for? But then he had conversations with her, without Ren or River around, and then he realized.
The more he became closer to Jennifer, the more it felt their relationship was changing. The dynamic was all wrong, and it was disappointing.
Jennifer was feeling more like a sister than a girlfriend. The concept was crazy too! He avoided dating Ren, mostly because she had knew too much about him.
But Jennifer, who had so much potential with him, now seemed too much for him to handle. It's been three months, and it isn't too late to end it.
Maybe he needed to talk to Jennifer. Because Jennifer was intelligent, she'd know what to do.
He just wanted Ren back.
"Keanu." He heard, and he recognized the voice instantly.
"Ren?" He called out, cringing at how desperate he sounded.
"You're silly, almost as silly as the Trickster's costume." Ren pointed out with a giggle, and he grinned back. It was such a relief to see her smile, and it was so comforting just to have her around him again.
"How am I silly?" He questioned, feeling dazed as the brunette crawled on the bed and on top of him.
She straddled around his waist, peering down at him with a strong stare.
"You can't get me back. You already lost me, right, River?" She taunted, and the grin fell off of Keanu's face.
"Wait, Ren–" He tried calling out as the girl crawled off to him and towards the dark corner of his room.
Stepping out the shadows was none other than his own best friend–River.
"You're right, sweetheart." River replied, a smirk gracing his face, and pulled Ren into a kiss.
"You didn't even know what you had until she was gone. Keanu." River spat out, and suddenly everything seemed so terrifying.
He was scared because he never wanted Ren to abandon him. He needed her, but he also needed River.
It felt like a century as the pair left his room. A blaring noise came, and it was so piercing, it made his his ears ache.
"Oh my God." Keanu panicked, sitting up on his bed. He was out of breath, and he glanced at his clock.
It was 6:00 AM, and all that was just a bad dream. Ren and River wouldn't leave him, and hurt him like that.
It was just a nightmare.
