CHAPTER FIVE; TOO LATE
River and Ren had spent Sunday morning together, messing around at the park. When noon came around, River decided to head home and see his family. The two parted ways and Ren was back in her room.
Luckily, her mother went to the grocery store, so Ren didn't have dodge more questions for now. Ren was surrounded by old comics scattered around her bedroom floor. She was rereading old issues she had originally read with her best friend.
It made her feel nostalgic and a bit melancholy, but what could she do? Ren didn't want to go after Keanu and end up appearing clingy. But now she felt a bit conflicted as her feelings for Keanu clashed with her newfound feelings for River.
After ten more minutes of complete silence, with the exception of the comic book pages turn, the door bell had rang. Ren groaned, "I don't want to answer the door."
She slowly got up from her position, trudging downstairs and gazing through the front door's peephole. To her surprise, it was Keanu.
The girl quickly hurried to open the door, and there Keanu stood with a sheepish smile.
"K-Keanu, I wasn't expecting to see you." Ren stuttered out, feeling confusion and shock at the sight of her estranged best friend.
"Well, Jennifer is hanging out with Neve more now. I wanted to see you. I miss you." Keanu explained, fidgeting witch the hem of his t-shirt. It felt like everything had changed between them–their dynamic–and it was nerve-wracking.
"Do you want to come in?" Ren inquired a moment later, making way for Keanu to step inside.
Once Ren softly closed the front door, she glanced at her best friend and couldn't suppress the butterflies she felt. It seemed to be a really long time since she's last been with him.
"What have you been up to?" Keanu asks, the two already heading upstairs to her room.
"I've been reading old comics and reorganizing them. I haven't done anything else productive today." Ren informed Keanu, sitting down to look at her comics again.
Keanu sat next to her and smile, "I remember buying you this one. You were so happy."
"Well, anything Wonder Woman related makes me happy. It's my favorite comic too." Ren replied, smiling fondly as she thought back to old memories. Memories when it was her and Keanu–no outsiders.
"I'd knew you loved it. You always loved Lynda Carter's performance as Wonder Woman." Keanu softly spoke, skimming through the pages. Before he bought the comic as a gift to Ren, he read it to make sure she would like it.
Keanu has his fair share of comics at home that Ren gifted him, ranging from Batman to John Constantine.
"Yeah, I do. Remember when I bought you Watchmen? That's our favorite." Ren reminded Keanu, who grinned.
"Yeah, I was so happy. Remember, I picked up and twirled you around the living room? My mom thought we were going to break her new vase." Keanu said with a laugh, and it seemed like the tension was slowly melting away.
"Remember when we were about eight and we hid my mom's car keys? She was so pissed." Ren mentioned, smiling at all these fond memories she shared with Keanu.
"Yeah, It seems like we've known each other since the beginning of time. We're like the dynamic duo, I'm Batman and you're Robin." Keanu pointed out.
"Why am I Robin?" Ren questioned, letting out a whine. Don't get her wrong, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd were cool, but Bruce Wayne was still cooler to her.
"Because you're tiny and could fit into their costumes." Keanu answered with a smirk.
"Haha, very funny!" Ren replied sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
"It was funny! It's not my fault you're so tiny." Keanu teased, and Ren retaliated by hitting his arm.
"I am not tiny. I am perfect." Ren said, sticking her tongue out at Keanu.
"That's conceited." Keanu answered back with a raised eyebrow.
"No, I'm just confident." Keanu rolled his eyes at her statement.
"Yeah, okay dude. We should watch a movie." Keanu suggested, changing the subject.
"Which one?" Ren questioned, stacking her comic books together. Time to put them away.
"Night of The Living Dead! I'm in a mood for zombies." Keanu exclaimed excitedly.
"Of course you are." Ren mumbled, heading downstairs to the living room with Keanu hot on her tail.
The two quickly set up the movie and had a popcorn bowl out. Keanu enjoyed watching movies with Ren, especially because she wasn't scared easily. The only thing that freaked her out was The Exorcist starring Linda Blair.
The two were huddled up on the couch, watching the movie intently but the door opening caught Ren's attention. She turned around to see her mom walking in with a bag of groceries.
"Ren, I'm home. Come help with the groceries." Her mom called out, and then noticing Keanu. A smile grew on her mother's face.
"Keanu! We haven't seen you in awhile." Ren's mother excitedly said, making Keanu wince a little. He was a bad best friend, he should've kept visiting, even with Jennifer around.
"Hi, Mrs. Fujioka. I've been pretty busy lately." Keanu explained with a polite smile.
Ren was outside, still retrieving groceries from the car.
"Did Ren's boyfriend leave already?" Mrs. Fujioka questioned, and Keanu felt his heart stop beating for a moment. A boyfriend? Ren has a boyfriend.
"Ren has a boyfriend?" Keanu quietly questioned, feeling his heart shatter.
"Yeah, he's a cute blond boy. I found them having a sleepover–had to give them the talk." Mrs. Fujioka said with a laugh, as if Keanu's heart wasn't just ripped to shreds.
Keanu was upset. At least when he started dating Jennifer, he told both Ren and River. But it seems like his suspicious was right–he was too late. The worst thing was, it took this moment to realize that no, he didn't love Jennifer, he was in love with Ren.
He was in love with Ren Fujioka, the girl he's known since their diaper days. Why did it take him so long to realize how right it feels to he with Ren?
And not only is she dating any guy, he's sure she's dating River. River was his best friend, and was such a great guy. There was nothing to hate about him–he was perfect for Ren–and that made it hurt more for Keanu.
Ren came back into the house, struggling to hold over five bags of groceries on both arms. Setting plastic bags on the counter, she sighed in relief before turning to Keanu.
"What happened?" She questioned, referring to the movie.
"Not much." Keanu mumbled, turning away from the brunette.
Not much, except my heart breaking.
What was Keanu going to do? He wanted Ren, but couldn't have her. Keanu didn't want to lead Jennifer on either, especially when he knows how he feels.
He feels lost for once, and he can't even turn for his best friends for help.
