Chapter 12
A few weeks later, on the 16th of March, on Ryker's birthday, Dani woke up. There had been a mosquito flying above her head. The time on the digital clock read 00:01. She groaned and attempted to go back to sleep. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a white speck sticking out from the bottom of the dorm's door. She grumbled something and went to pick it up. The speck turned out to be a corner to a page. On it was a letter, which read:
Dear Dani,
Make sure you come to the hall at sunset. I have something special to show you. Save March 16th's (tomorrow and also my birthday) evening. Tell your friends to come too, I want them all to see, I'll bring Ben and Tim with me. I suspect Tim might have a crush on your friend Catherine. Anyway, hope to see you tomorrow.
Your.... uh... something,
Ryker
Dani smiled and glanced over at Catherine's bed. Someone'll be happy to hear that. But, I wonder what he possibly wants to show me? Dani thought. The clock said the time was 00:06. Dani lay back in her bed and closed her eyes. She fell back asleep.
~~~~~~
"What's that?" Catherine questioned a few hours later at 06:00. She was eyeing the letter on Dani's lap. Dani covered the Tim part with her finger before allowing Catherine to see. Her eyes scanned the paper for a second. "Oooooooh," she seemed to sing, quietly. Catherine's expression told Dani, she knew something she didn't.
"Were you bothered by a mosquito? Last night I mean," Dani asked, changing the subject. She placed the note in her side drawer. Dani knew as a shifter she could've killed the mosquito with her jaws, but she had cleanliness issues. Her wolf form was still dirty from the cross-country they'd had a week prior.
"Not that I'm aware of," Catherine replied. "Did it bother you?" She was busy putting her long hair in her usual ponytail.
"One woke me up, that's when discovered the letter," Dani admitted. Her blonde hair falling in her face. Catherine was smirking.
"Are you sure it was the mosquito? I don't believe so. She must be a very quiet mossy, if she didn't ever awake me," Catherine said. "You haven't been sleeping well for the past few days. Are you sure you're not jealous?"
"How can I be jealous, when I don't even know her name?" Catherine was looking at her.
"But the thought of it is making you lose sleep." Catherine turned her head. "Oh, if only you knew...." She turned back to Dani. "Ryker requested you to come? And he told you to bring us?"
"You read the letter though?"
"I did. You go alone at sunset, I'll bring Kayla."
~~~~~
At sunset, Dani went to the hall. Ryker was nowhere in sight. Where is he? He was supposed to be showing me something. Ryker then appeared holding a microphone. Dani turned and saw Tim and Ben sitting not to far off. Catherine, followed by Kayla, walked in and sat down. Kayla signaled for Dani to sit next to them.
"Dani!" Said Ryker when he noticed her sitting. The microphone was emanating his voice. He then closed his eyes. "You came..." He was smiling. He opened them again, a soft look on his face. Kayla and Catherine, along with Ben and Tim were making weird gestures. Dani gave both groups a confused look. She suddenly conscious of Ryker's gaze. His dark eyes were so lit up, the green was visible. His eyes were sparkling. And then he started singing. Dani gazed up in awe. The others had faded away. It was only them. This wasn't a play, this wasn't for fun. This was personal. "I can be your hero, baby..." Dani felt tears form at her eyes, as pure joy overwhelmed her. It was beautiful. Things started to click in the back of her mind. This was for her. Ryker sang with more emotion than he could ever in a play. Slowly, as the song ended, the others faded back and were staring at her as if to say, we told you! Dani couldn't process it. When Ryker asked her to come on stage she did so. Ryker was blushing. "I-I wanted to tell you," he tried explain. "B-but I couldn't find the words and I wanted to i-it to be special. D-doing that p-project w-with you w-was t-torture. W-what did you think?"
Instead of replying, Dani leaned forward and kissed him on the lips, causing the microphone to fall out of Ryker's hand. He had also grown redder. Cheers sounded from the small crowd. When Dani stopped, the expression on Ryker's face was pure shock. "It was amazing," she replied, quietly, looking at him. "I loved it and, um.." She whispered the rest in his ear. "I love you."
