First Family Outing pt. 1

M: "Goodnight, guys, hope you sleep well," Mandara called to them, MA simply nodding.

Rowen took his leave as well, but not before giving his sons a much-welcomed hug, all three of them happy that they get to do it again. One by one and everyone else began to head to sleep too, though Mandara stayed up a bit longer to clear everyone's schedules for tomorrow, he didn't want anything to interrupt their first family outing in over 300 years.

N: The night went smoothly for most, with both the Schwartz's dead asleep with the help of the dreamcatcher, but the Kress' struggled a bit, especially since Ella kept on waking up in the middle of the night.

When dawn came around, Johann was finally able to get Helena back to sleep, and used the opportunity to quietly sneak out of their room. Quietly walking through the hallway in his pyjamas, he eventually found the kitchen, and was able to procure himself a mug of coffee.

Hoping that the beverage would give him enough energy for the day, he sip his drink as he watched the sun slowly rise into the sky.

M: Mandara was naturally the first one up, he slept on a countryhuman schedule after all, so it was normal for him to wake at the break of dawn. He made his way to the kitchen to see what could be made for breakfast, since the kitchen staff usually wasn't there for it.

"Oh, hey Johann, I didn't expect to see you here this early," he said once he spotted his brother, "I take it by your eyes that you didn't get much sleep, I was worried about that, I'm sorry."

N: "Nein, don't be," Johann replied as he stifled a yawn, "Helena had some trouble sleeping and did what I could to get her to rest."

Staring into his mug, he sighed, "it's miserable really, knowing how they all died and seeing the aftermath of it all. I couldn't even imagine how it was with you with the centuries you've lived, and I don't think I would have had the strength to see one death after another. Both you and Derogan are stronger than ever to be alive right now, stronger than I would have ever been."

M: Mandara shrugged and put his hands in his pockets, "Yeah, well, we're countryhumans, you innately know that life is going to be a bitch to you from the start. It certainly was hard at the start, but eventually your body just kind of numbs itself to it all, it still hurts to lose those close to you, you just get over it quicker, you know."

He walked up to Johann and patted his shoulder, "but that's not something to worry about today, were having a good time today. Come on, I want to show you the magic of Eggo toaster waffles."

N: "'Eggo toaster waffles'," Johann repeated in confusion as he followed Mandara towards a refrigerator. He watched as his brother retrieved the packaged waffles from the freezer, and was first fascinated at how an appliance could stay cold for so long.

Stepping cautiously towards the refrigerator, he stuck his hand in and was surprised at the cooled air.

"So you're telling me that you are going to eat those ready made waffles from this compact icebox," he asked, still confused about the refrigerator, "isn't it too cold, and don't people have enough time to just make waffles?"

M: "It depends really, nowadays people need to get to work and school at a relatively early time, and depending on when you wake up you might not have time to make breakfast," Mandara explained, "and you certainly don't eat them when they are frozen, that's where the toaster comes in."

He led him to a small metal device on the counter, taking two of the blueberry breakfast circles into the two slots and pressed the lever down, where it stayed and the inside began to glow orange.

"So electricity produces heat, that's why when lightning strikes it sometimes starts fires, what this does is shoot electricity through copper coils and it heats up, which cooks the waffles," he again explained, "the little knobs on here let you set the temperature of the heat and how long you want the food to cook. And when it's done cooking the lever pops up and raises the food, so don't stand too close because it might startle you the first few times."

N: "Interesting," Johann muttered, ignoring Mandara's warning and stepped closer to the toaster. Hovering his hand over the appliance, he chuckled a bit when the warmth tingled his fingers.

"It's sort of like a portable campfire," he spoke, facing his brother, "if this is the sort of stuff people have made nowadays then it seems pretty- SCHIESSE!"

The Mandorian jumped back and yelped as the toaster 'pinged', popping the waffles up a bit before resting back in the toaster. Despite being such a common appliance, Johann's 18th century brain was definitely frightened at such an unfamiliar sound.

M: Mandara really had to hold himself back from laughing at Johann's fright, he did warn him after all, he could only pat his brother on the back and reassure him that it wasn't going to eat him. He then took the crispy waffles out of the toaster and onto a plate, handing it to Johann while he put another pair into the toaster.

"Alright, do you want maple syrup with that or just butter," the country asked as he walked to the pantry, "I normally like putting Nutella on mine. Wait, you haven't tried nutella before, oh you totally have to."

He grabbed the syrup and the hazelnut spread and came back, then took a spoon out and scooped out a bit of nutella for Johann to try.

N: Johann looked curiously at the spread and licked a bit off from his scoop of Nutella. Immediately his eyes widened with delight as he turned to Mandara, "I'm definitely having this."

The Mandorian proceeded to use way too much Nutella for his waffle but he didn't care. All he wanted to do was indulge his sweet tooth, and taking one good bite out of his chocolaty creation, he essentially melted.

"Das ist so gut (this is so good)," he spoke as he goofily smiled, taking a sip from his coffee, "I could eat this all day."

M: "Oh good lord what have I done," Mandara laughed, taking the Nutella container away from him, "I forgot that you shouldn't have sugar so early in the morning, you're going to be bouncing off the skyscrapers, aren't you."

Once his waffles were ready, Mandara applied a significantly less amount of nutella on his waffles, got his coffee that he made while the waffles were cooking, and led his brother to the dining room to properly eat. No one was awake just yet, they were pretty early, Mandara was glad so he could spend a few quality moments with his older brother ... well ... older in spirit.

"How about we keep this nutella thing just between us for now, I remember your daughter being just as hyperactive as you were and I don't think either of us wants to deal with that."

N: "Good idea, I should go and check on her after this too," Johann agreed; however, he was paying much more attention to his waffles, so he just absentmindedly nodded while devouring his breakfast.

When he had finally had enough, he sighed as he finished off his second mug of coffee of the morning. Setting his mug down, he just glanced at his leg, watching it bop from the sugar rush.

"Maybe the Nutella and coffee wasn't the best combination," he said, speaking slightly faster than usual, "at least I would have some energy," he smirked, "but do keep an eye on me until I finally crash."

M: Mandara chuckled, "sure thing, buddy, though I know you that doesn't usually happen, you're pretty good at burning energy off throughout the day."

The country then took a notebook out of his pocket and showed it to Johann, on it was a list of places they could possibly visit today, from small shops, to malls, to a few parks.

"Which one do you want to visit first," he asked his brother, "we might have time to visit at least half of them but I figured you should at least see the options."

N: Johann scanned through the list, his eyes unconsciously navigating through the things he recognised, but he decided to do something new for a change.

"What's an 'arcade'," he asked, pointing at the word, "isn't that just a building with arches?"

M: Mandara couldn't hold it in this time, he still tried to be respectful and didn't laugh that hard, but only could tell that he was really struggling to keep it to a minimum.

"So sorry, I wasn't expecting that, I didn't mean to be rude," he apologized, wiping a tear from his eyes, "an arcade is a place that is full of games, and I don't mean board games. Now thinking about it, how about we leave this choice for some other time, it's a bit too futuristic for your second day back on earth."

He crossed out that option, sure it would be fun, but video games and animatronic entertainers are a bit too complicated for everyone.

"There is a shopping center not far from Mandoria Park, that might be a good place to start, it will help introduce you guys to lots of products and services that we have," he suggested, "and then after that we can get takeout and have a picnic at the park."

N: "Sounds nice," Johann smiled, although he tried his best to not look too confused with the new terms.

After finishing off his waffles, the Mandorian placed his plate away before turning back to Mandara, "I just need to check on Ella and see if she's sleeping well. You're welcome to come along."

With that, they made their way to his room, and Johann gently opened the door so as not to wake his daughter up. Luckily she was still on the bed, but her head was at the foot of the bed with one of her arms hanging off the edge.

"Ella," Jo softly smiled as he carefully lifted her up and tucked her properly into bed, placing a small kiss on her forehead.

M: Mandara smiled at the sight, he remembered when his little Blue-Jay was still little and he used to do that. He wished that his son got to meet his family when he was still little, his reaction would have been priceless.

When Johann came back out and closed the door, Mandara was still smiling, "Man, what I would give to care for my little Blue-Jay like that again, it's been over 80 years since he was just a baby. Then again, I don't want to put my husband through that again."

Realizing that his thoughts were turning dark, he shook his head and again smiled, "how about we go relax in the living room while we wait for everyone to wake up, gives me an excuse to introduce you to a tv and how you can watch the news instead of just reading it."

N: "Sure," Johann nodded, following Mandara to the living room.

After a while, Wolfgang showed up definitely looking well rested compared to Johann, and he strolled up to the pair and sat down next to the Mandorian.

"Where's Eclipse," the Saxon asked, "because I need to thank him for giving my son and I the best rest in our lives. It was beautiful."

"Uhuh," Johann hummed as he had his eyes fixated on the TV, "did you know that you can watch someone tell you what the weather will be a whole week in advance?"

"Sorcery."

M: "Technology," Mandara chucked, "there are people who specialize in measuring the weather, and they have tools and machines that give them more accurate predictions."

The country checked his phone before answering Wolfie's question, "he's at his house, he lives in an apartment above his bakery, he just comes here at the end of the day to spend time and eat dinner. If you want we can stop by there, he has the best freshly roasted coffee you will ever find, and you can guess why just by its name; Dragon Roast coffee & bakery."

N: "I still don't understand those little devices," Wolfgang grumbled, narrowing his eyes on Mandara's phone, "the power you have in the palm of your hand is incredible."

"Probably not as incredible as those aircraft you were talking about yesterday," Johann chuckled, although he was nervous about the prospect of getting into a plane. When his brother suggested going to visit Eclipse, he hesitated for a moment, "if he's good at brewing coffee, I might as well go and try it out."

"I wouldn't mind stopping by," the Saxon shrugged, "and it seems like Niko has taken a liking to him too."

M: "Great, we'll head there after everyone wakes up, he makes some delicious apple fritters, though I don't think that Jo should have any more sugar."

With that said, they waited until everyone woke up one by one, notably both the twins were absent, but it was explained that they had to get back to their duties. Rowen was a bit grumpy to learn that he had to wait for his coffee, but after being reassured that it would be worth the wait he didn't complain further. After a brief explanation of what the day had in store, everyone was led to the garage where several cars and vans were parked, Poldara and his family took a car and the Mandarian brothers ushered everyone else into one of the bigger family vans, and soon were on their way.

N: Johann and Wolfgang were still not used to being in a car, however the kids looked like they were right at home, peering out of the windows as the scenery zoomed by.

When they had entered town, Wolfgang just stared out of the window, having been completely silent the entire car journey, and studying the world around him.

"Luckily we actually changed our clothes," he muttered, "because we would have stuck out of the crowd like a sore thumb. The world has changed so much."

M: "I can't say enough that you don't know anything about how the world has changed, you should have seen earlier how Jo reacted to the toaster," Mandara chuckled, causing MA to snort in laughter, "hopefully a trip to Eclipse's bakery will help ease us into today, because a few things will seem a little familiar."

They finally arrived at their destination and parked in the small parking lot across the street. From the outside the shop looked unassuming, or at least as unassuming as a modern bakery would be to 1700s people, at least the smell was familiar.

When they entered the shop it was quite homely in it, a nice mix of modern with an 80's flare, but that's not what made it stand out. On the counter there was a little cat bed, and nestled in it was a cat-sized dragon, sleeping contently as it snuggled a well worn teddy bear.

"Hey guys, welcome to the Dragon Roast roost," Eclipse greeted, coming out from a backroom area, "I'm glad you stopped by, I was just about to try out a new brew I got last week."

N: "Then I'll like to try it as soon as you're ready," Johann replied, watching his daughter from the corner of his eye as she slowly approached the dragon, "got to get as much energy as I can."

"You'll probably explode from all the sugar and caffeine you've consumed," Wolfgang laughed, to which the Mandorian pouted.

"But the danishes look so good," to which the Saxon only laughed even more.

Helena finally was looking at the dragon, and when curiosity got the best of her, she reached out to pet the tiny creature but was quickly stopped by Nikolaus.

"Don't touch, Ella," he warned, "it's sleeping."

"But look at the little baby," she grinned, "it's y Ddraig Goch (the red (Welsh) dragon) but tiny."

M: "You like him, I found him stuck in a cage trap a couple years ago, I don't know how he got there or how he was living around the area undetected," Eclipse explained, "I knew that it was a death sentence letting him roam around in the wild, not to mention he had a nasty tear in one of his wings, so I took him in and now he helps me make the coffee."

Once Eclipse retrieved the raw coffee beans, he gently woke up his companion. The little dragon stretched and clambered onto a little perch, receiving a piece of meat from its owner before it set to work, breathing fire on the beans while roasting them to the perfect color.

"My my, he sure packs a punch for a little guy," Rowen chuckled, "what's his name?"

"We call him Tiny Empyr around here, one of the kids that frequents this place suggested it," the entity smiled, pouring the beans into a grinder, "I call him TE or just Tiny, he doesn't mind."

N: "Hello, TE," Helena smiled as he waved at the little dragon, then turned to Eclipse, "if his name is TE, can he make tea?"

"TE is short for Tiny Empyr, dummkopf (idiot)," Niko facepalmed, "and you can see that is coffee beans."

"So you should just call him Coffee," the young girl suggested.

Johann laughed as he shook his head, nudging Rowen a bit, "imagine if that's what Edel would have looked like if he was a kid."

M: "Well Helena, in the kingdom of Mandoria we had our own religion, and one of the gods was the dragon spirit of courage, Empyr," Eclipse explained, "nowadays he's mostly seen as a fairy tale, a kid's storybook character at best, so that's why the little girl suggested it as his name."

"Kid's storybook character, well that's a sad thing for a great spirit to end up as, do the people have no respect for the gods," Rowen asked.

"Father, you need to remember that this is 300 years after the Prussian Purge," Mandara stated, "no one even remembers most of the old gods, the time of the kingdom of Mandoria is dead, the ruins of the castle is all you'll see that's left from that time period, not even the city surrounding it survived."

"But the Eye of Ora did," Poldara pointed out, trying to steer the conversation away from depression, "no one has been allowed down there for decades, though we do have to send a clean-up crew to clean up the garbage and random stuff people throw down there, humans will be humans after all, no offence."

N: "None taken. We're aware of what humanity has done," Johann shrugged, "the Eternals definitely opened our eyes to it; although, it's nice to hear that the Eye of Ora has survived."

"Can we just avoid talking about the purge in general, bitte," Wolfgang grumbled, walking over to his son, "and can we just focus on the shop instead?"

The Mandorian sighed before nodding, "sure. Eclipse, how long until we can try your famed coffee?"

M: "I just got to poor the hot water into the filter with the coffee grounds," Eclipse stated, doing just as he said he would, "nowadays your average coffee shop gets pre-roasted and pre-ground coffee and uses machines to make it drinkable, but nothing beats the old-fashioned way, that's another reason my shop is so popular."

Eventually, everyone's coffees were finished and TE was rewarded with another treat, of course, the children just got hot chocolate. Mandara paid for their coffee and a few pastries, and the group sat at one of the outside tables to enjoy their breakfast.

"You know, not only is Eclipse's coffee homemade, but so are all his pastries, that's why they're so good," MA informed them, "he bakes them all fresh in the morning, and whatever he doesn't sell at the end of the day he donates to a charity that gives food to those who can't afford it."

N: "He really has changed," Wolfgang muttered to himself before sipping from his coffee, "and this has to be one of the best coffee I've tasted in...well...300 years. Kress, what do you think?"

Johann only hummed in agreement as his mouth was full of the danish he chose, and with Helena's mouth also filled with food beside him, it was like they were seeing the exact same thing.

M: "Yup, that's about right," Mandara chuckled, taking a picture of the two, "like father like daughter, obviously."

"Pretty much, these two never did have manners, it was any wonder BE didn't ban you two from the dinner table," Rowen commented.

"Oh that reminds me, we need to send UK proof that you all are alive, so Trigger and I were planning on documenting today's journey," MA remembered, he took out his phone and set it to selfie mode, "alright, everyone group in, make sure you are in the frame and look at the little dot, then on three we say 'cheese'."

N: "Why do we have to say a dairy product," Wolfgang questioned, "what's so special about cheese?"

"Don't question the future," Johann replied as he shuffled into frame, and was confused to see his own image on the phone screen, but didn't say anything. Eventually everyone got in, and on the count of three the photo was taken.

M: "You say cheese because the word forces your mouth into a smile, which is what you want to do for a picture," Poldara explained, "but back when photography was first invented it was considered improper to smile for a picture, so they would say prune instead."

"It was a real headache to take those pictures, you often had to sit there for hours for the picture to develop, I'm so happy that it's instantaneous now," Mandara stated.

N: "Then we're lucky that we skipped that whole process then," Johann smiled, "isn't that right, Wolfe?"

"I think I prefer prune," the Saxon stated, "it's weird seeing an image of you faking a smile."

"Stoic as ever," the Mandorian rolled his eyes then turned his attention to Helena, who had her sights on a playground in a nearby park and watching the kids play.
