CH Headcanon: Animal Body Parts
(There are some mentions of winged countries here that weren't in the wings chapter, only because they have bat-like wings instead of bird.)
Aside from wings, some countries/entities have the chance of being born with other animal features, though the chances are even rarer than wings. Some modern-day examples are Japan, Mexico, Chile, and Wales. Mexico and Chile both have reptile-like tails, with Mexico's being a rattlesnake, and Chile's is topped with fur. Japan also has a tail, but it resembles that of a domesticated cat, and she sports feline ears and eyes. Wales is a bit complicated, like Mexico, he has wings and a tail, but unlike Mexico, his wings are bat-like like Romania and his tail more resembles a dragon, with spines going down the length and an arrowhead on the tip. Because of the lack of feathers, Wales and Romania aren't really considered winged countries by some of their peers, especially since the senses in their wings aren't as strong as ones with feathers.
Nowadays, animal features are typically just tails, ears, eyes, and teeth, but back during the medieval ages, animal features were very different. Not only was it more common(ish) to have animal parts, but the features also covered more of the body of the countryhumans. Most of the myths of centaurs, nagas, werewolves, and even mermaids, all had origins from a countryhuman who represented that creature. For reasons unknown, it was getting rarer for countries to be born with animal features around the 18th century, and they almost went completely extinct in the 19th century. There is a theory that the animal gene was dominant to countryhumans of kingdom status rather than country status, and as the kingdoms were dying out and countries took their place, they couldn't pass on those genes to the next generation. Fortunately, the animal gene was able to somehow survive and mutated so countries could have it, the exception being they wouldn't be born as animalistic as their ancestors. It also appears that militant, special, and full-time entities have not developed the gene yet.
When a country is born with animal features, the animal they have features of typically is native to their territory. For example, Nepal has the ears and tail of a snow leopard, which can be found in his country, and Madagascar has the tail of a ring-tailed lemur. A country will also have the senses of the animal they are a part of. Mexico, Chile, and Wales can sense the body heat of people with their tongues, Japan and Nepal have excellent hearing and can see in the dark, and Romania can use echolocation to find things and people.
The downside to having animal parts is that countries sometimes develop the behaviors of said animals, i.e. Japan will chase lasers and hunt mice, Wales sometimes hoards shiny objects, and Romania usually only comes out at night. Another problem is when someone touches a country's tail, touching one's tail is considered a very intimate action and is only reserved for a country's close family and relationship partners, so if a handsy stranger touches someone's tail, it can be very uncomfortable for the country in question.
