Day Twenty Two: Hot Chocolate

The Hazbin Hotel was unusually quiet, and not in a peaceful way. Tension hung heavy in the air, weighing on its residents. Earlier in the day, arguments drained everyone's energy, leaving even the most vibrant personalities subdued. Husk sat slumped at the bar, swirling his drink without interest. Charlie paced near the front desk, wringing her hands as Vaggie stood nearby, offering quiet words of reassurance. Angel Dust lay sprawled across a sofa, his usual sharp humor replaced by heavy silence. Even Niffty wasn't her normal stabby self today.

By the fireplace, Alastor lounged in his chair, but his grin seemed hollow, more a habit than an expression of joy. Nearby, Lucifer sat on a luxurious chaise, his crimson suit immaculate as always, though his sharp eyes flicked around the room with barely veiled disapproval. Even the hotel's chaos-makers were subdued. Andy Grin and Cherri Bomb, usually a source of mischief, sat silently on the staircase. Victoria and Molly huddled together in a corner, exchanging murmured words, while Arackniss struggled to be in the same room with Monty without wanting to strangle him.

Sir Pentious, ever the eccentric, stood apart from the group, muttering about the "inferior decor" as he adjusted his goggles. The heavy atmosphere was interrupted by the sound of the front door opening. Kara Melody walked in, her arms laden with a large box from the market. "Satan I hate the cold!" She shouted, shivering from the cold. "But this time, it was worth it."

She paused just getting inside, surveying the scene with a raised eyebrow. "What's going on here? You all are acting like someone died."

Angel Dust cracked one eye open. "Kara, save it unless you've got a miracle in that box. Today's officially the worst."

"Oh, I've got something better than a miracle," Kara replied, setting her box on the bar. She pulled off her coat, revealing a cozy sweater, and unpacked the box. "A little Melody magic."

"Somewhat now?" Lucifer asked.

Kara then picked up one of the custom mugs she bought from the store, "A little hot chocolate for the soul."

She then brought everything into the kitchen then she started to get to work. The room slowly began to stir as Kara set to work. She filled the pot with milk, placing it over a small magical flame she conjured with a flick of her fingers. Alastor watched from the distance, his eyes narrowing as she started tossing ingredients into the pot. "Isn't hot chocolate just cocoa powder and sugar?" he asked skeptically.

Kara shot him a mock glare. "Please. This isn't your sad mortal hot chocolate, Alastor. This is Melody magic."

She reached into her box, pulling out a block of rich, dark chocolate. With a small flourish, she grated it into the steaming milk, the room instantly filling with the comforting aroma of cocoa. The rich aroma of melted chocolate soon filled the room as she grated in the finest dark chocolate. "Hot chocolate?" Molly asked, tilting her head.

"Not just any hot chocolate," Kara said, stirring the mixture with a practiced hand. "This is my famous recipe. Guaranteed to make even Lucifer crack a smile."

Lucifer raised an elegant brow. "I'd be impressed if you managed that."

Kara smirked. "Challenge accepted."

She added cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of chili powder for warmth, then whisked the mixture until it was smooth and velvety. "I'm skeptical," Sir Pentious muttered, but his nose twitched as he caught a whiff of the concoction.

Kara worked quickly, adding a pinch of chili powder for a hint of warmth and a sprinkle of sugar for balance. The steam rising from the pot was intoxicating, and the once-heavy atmosphere of the room began to shift. "Well then, prepare to enjoy my coco," Kara said.

Husk sniffed the air and grunted. "Smells decent."

"Decent?" Angel Dust sniffed theatrically, finally sitting up. "Honey, that smells divine."

"Patience," Kara said, stirring the mixture with a wooden spoon. "Good things take time."

Lucifer watched her work with a raised brow. "Do you truly believe a simple beverage will lift this pitiful lot out of their misery?"

Kara didn't look up. "Care to make a wager on that, Morningstar?"

Lucifer chuckled, "We'll see."

When the hot chocolate was ready, Kara poured it into the mugs and then added a few extra personal stylings for everyone. For Charlie, she crafted a sugary masterpiece with marshmallows, whipped cream, and a sprinkle of edible glitter. Charlie looked like she was gonna cry over how beautiful it looked. Vaggie's was simple yet comforting, with a cinnamon stick for stirring. The two tasted it first and their eyes lit up. It was the most heavenly thing they had ever tasted.

For Angel Dust, Kara went all out; whipped cream with caramel drizzle on top, and pink sugar crystals sprinkled all over. Perfect for a little diva. For Molly, Kara added a dusting of cocoa powder and a side of candied orange peel. Even Arackniss, who initially refused, reluctantly accepted his plain black mug, muttering, "Fine, but I'm not saying thanks."

"Just taste it." Kara stated.

The three spiders took a sip each; Molly was gushing at how amazing it tasted, Arackniss just shrugged his shoulder but he did crack a smile. Angel however gulped his down in seconds and then handed it back to Kara. "More please?" Angel asked.

"Oh hell no. You know how you get when you have too much sugar." Arackniss said in an authoritative brother tone.

"Do I look like your kid?" Angel annoyingly asked.

Kara handed him the mug with the same hot chocolate with whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and pink sugar crystals. Niffty's was served in a dainty teacup with a candy cane sticking out. Husk's came with a shot of whiskey mixed in, earning an appreciative grunt. Andy Grin and Victoria received matching mugs with peppermint sticks, their faces lighting up as they took their first sips. Cherri Bomb grinned as she accepted her drink, loaded with marshmallows and a hint of chili. "Now this is my kind of sweet and spicy."

Alastor raised a brow as she handed him a mug topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cayenne. "I know you don't like anything sweet Al, but I think you'll like this," Kara said.

Alastor took a sip and he enjoyed it. "Spicy, yet refined. Fitting." Alastor commented.

For Lucifer, Kara prepared a duck-themed mug. The drink was topped with a dollop of whipped cream shaped like a duck, complete with an orange sugar beak and edible gold feathers. Lucifer inspected it with mild amusement before taking a sip. "Charming," he said, his tone as smooth as ever.

Kara reached Sir Pentious, she handed him a tall, ornate mug with a sprinkle of edible gold dust and a single, chocolate-covered pretzel placed carefully on the rim. "For you, the great inventor," she teased.

Pentious squinted at her, then sniffed the drink suspiciously. "Hmph. If this turns out to be another mortal attempt to sully my brilliance..."

"Just try it," Kara said, rolling her eyes.

Pentious took a cautious sip, his expression melting into one of reluctant delight. "Well... it's tolerable, I suppose."

"Tolerable?" Angel Dust cackled. "Look at him—he's in heaven!"

"I most certainly am not!" Pentious snapped, though he clutched the mug protectively as he retreated to a corner.

Arackniss gave his lover a kiss on the cheek, "Penn, you do."

Pentious playfully rolled his eyes at Arackniss. "Fine but only for you my darling sniper." He playfully put some whipped cream on Arackniss's cheek and licked it off.

"You are so whipped. In more ways than one." Angel smugly stated.

Monty's mug was particularly special: a vibrant green concoction topped with marshmallows, a drizzle of Irish cream, and a handful of Lucky Charms cereal for extra whimsy. Monty's eyes sparkled as he lifted the mug. "This is the best thing I've ever seen!" he declared, digging into the marshmallows with a spoon.

"Why am I not surprised?" Pentious asked, "I swear you just love those."

Monty looked up at Pentious, "What? You know I love me Lucky Charms." Monty said.

That made Pentious, Cherri, Angel, Molly, and Arackniss chuckle. "What? What's so funny?" Monty asked.

"You know that's a cereal commercial, right?" Victoria asked, snickering.

As everyone sipped their drinks, the tension in the room began to melt away. Charlie giggled softly, the sparkle returning to her eyes. Vaggie leaned into her, her usually sharp demeanor softening. Angel Dust stretched out on the sofa, sighing contentedly. "Kara, darling, you've outdone yourself."

Molly smiled, her shoulders relaxing for the first time that day. Husk's wings perked up slightly as he took another sip, muttering, "Not bad, kid."

Even Lucifer looked mildly impressed, his lips curving into a faint smile. "Well played, Kara."

Alastor's grin returned in full force as he leaned back in his chair. "I must admit, this is quite the delightful treat. Bravo."

The room filled with laughter and light conversation as stories were shared and spirits lifted. Kara watched from her seat by the fire, her own mug cradled in her hands. "You see?" she said, raising her mug. "There's nothing a good cup of hot chocolate can't fix."

Angel Dust raised his mug in return. "To Kara Melody, the queen of cocoa and savior of crappy days!"

The room erupted in cheers, their voices carrying through the hotel like a warm embrace.
