11 - BULLETPROOF
KAELYN SEEMED TO LEARN NEW THINGS EVERY DAY. For example, today she learned that her best friend knew how to ride a motorcycle. And hotwire one for that matter. She wanted to ask how and why, but that was hard to do when holding onto her waist and going seventy miles an hour (probably more, Kaelyn was a bad judge of speed and was also concentrating on not screaming). The fear of neither of them having helmets plagued her, but she tried to focus on the wind blowing through her hair and the fact the boy she maybe-liked was definitely in danger.
Despite the fact neither of them had been to Liz's house in years, Beth seemed to know where she was going. She stopped just before a bridge began, turning off the bike and putting the kickstand down. Before she got off, she turned to Kae and held a finger against her lips, nodding towards a clearing in the forest below.
There were audible voices, but it was hard to make out what they were saying so they stepped closer. However, as soon as she took a step, Kaelyn's heeled-boots made a sound that was much louder than she wanted it to be.
"Fuck this," she whispered before unzipping the boots and quietly taking them off, leaving them in the concrete. Beth watched with a smile, holding in a laugh. Carefully, they tread towards the sounds of the voices.
At first, Kaelyn just saw two men discussing some sort of arms deal. However, these didn't look like any regular guns, they looked like something otherworldly. Although, even in her head that sounded stupid.
"What the fuck are those?" Beth asked, but even her whisper was almost too loud so Kaelyn, out of both fear and instinct, clamped a hand over her best friend's mouth.
Kaelyn couldn't find Peter anyway and she began to wonder if she had just gotten herself into a hell of a lot of trouble for no reason, but then her eyes landed on something odd hanging against one of the bridge supports and she had to bite her tongue to keep from yelling out.
"Peter, you goddamn idiot," the redhead mumbled under her breath, trying to be as quiet as possible even though she was pretty much dangling over the side of a bridge trying to get a good look and the only thing running through her veins at the moment was fear.
Then, as if the universe really wanted to screw Kaelyn and Peter, his phone went off. Kaelyn sighed deeply as if she could sense all hell was about to break loose.
"Okay, what the hell was that?" the man who appeared to be selling the weapons asked, but the buyer seemed suspicious.
"Did you set us up?" the man asked, holding a gun towards the other man who immediately put his hands up in a surrender.
Then, Peter jumped down from his place on the bridge and announced, "Hey, hey, if you're gonna shoot at somebody, shoot at me!"
"Peter, no!" Kaelyn shouted out. Without even thinking, she leaped off the edge of the bridge, hoping to land in between Peter and the gun being pointed at him. However, a landing like that should have shattered her ankles, yet she felt fine.
She landed like the superheroes in the movies do, kneeling with a fist punching the ground. With the red hair, she kind of wished she was wearing all black as a tribute to Black Widow. Under all laws of physics and the human body, she should not have felt fine right now. In fact, she was a little in awe of it.
"Kaelyn? What the-" Peter began, but was stopped short when the man fired the gun. Kaelyn's heart barely had time to stop by the time it reached her. As if it would do anything, she shut her eyes and held out a hand knowing a bullet would tear right through, but it was too late to move now. Distantly, she heard Beth shouting.
Time slowed, at least, it felt like it did. The bullet hit her hand and although she was prepared for immense pain, she felt a small tap before the bullet fell to the ground.
"What the fuck kinda witchy shit was that?" the man holding the gun asked, but their attention was drawn away as the truck that held all the odd weapons was currently firing up and preparing to drive away.
"Shit," Peter muttered, shooting a web towards the truck. With his other hand, he grabbed Kaelyn by the waist and shot another web towards the bridge hoping to put her back up there. Just before he could reach, the truck shot off, taking Peter with it. In a flash, he attached the web to her wrist and let go, pretty much throwing her as he did so. The girl barely knew what was happening except for she was airborne and definitely screaming. She slammed against the rim of the bridge, which should have hurt like a bitch, yet she seemed to take no damage.
Beth ran over to the edge and began pulling her friend back up, speaking at a mile a minute as she did so. "Kae, what the fuck was that? Why did you think jumping was going to work out? Why did it work out? Have you always been able to deflect bullets? How the fuck did you make that jump and still have working legs? And the superhero pose? Dramatic as hell, but I loved it. Also, what the fuck?"
"One question at a time please," Kaelyn pleaded as she toppled onto the concrete on the other side of the railing, breathing heavily. "I should be dead. Beth, someone shot a gun at my head and I'm completely fine."
"I wouldn't say completely fine, I'm pretty sure you're in shock," Beth shrugged, sitting down next to her best friend and holding her tightly, rubbing small circles into her shoulder, "Maybe we shouldn't have gone to this party, huh?"
Kaelyn shook her head, "If we didn't, that bullet could have hit Peter or worse. Wait, Peter! He took off with that truck! We have to find him!"
The dark-haired girl, however, wasn't having it, "No, no, we are getting you home. He got himself into that, he can get himself out. Right now, we just found out you might have some sort of fucking superpowers, Kae, we are taking you home."
"Your house?" the redhead asked hopefully, but Beth shook her head.
"Home home. You need to face him, he might know what the fuck is going on."
"How are we even gonna get there?" Kaelyn sighed, trying to ignore her best friend's hopeful glance towards the motorcycle. "We are not riding that death trap anymore. Just leave it here, the owner will find it. I'd much rather walk back to the city."
Beth rolled her eyes, but pulled out her phone, "I hate you because you're making me do this. I'll call Will."
"You don't have to-" the girl began, but her friend was already on the phone. She sighed again, lying down on the concrete and letting the cool ground seep through into her bones. Her bones had a dull ache, but she knew nothing was broken. She also knew there was no bullet hole in her hand or head, that was the scariest part. She began to wonder if she had ever felt pain, even from a small paper cut. The only thing she could think of was getting dropped at practice, but even the most that always did was knock the wind out of her if that. These thoughts gave her a headache, she would worry about that later.
As they waited for Beth's slightly older, adopted, and annoying brother to come get them, Kaelyn's phone rang. First, she was annoyed until she realized who was calling.
"Peter? Where are you? Are you okay?" she rushed out before the boy could even say hello.
Through the phone, he sighed, "I'm trudging my way home, yes I'm okay. You know, you sound awfully concerned for someone who was pushing me away and being pretty mean to me for no reason less than an hour ago."
"I'm not mean for no reason," her voice quieted and Beth seemed to get the message as she stood up and waiting by the motorcycle, leaving Kaelyn by herself with the phone call. "I just- it's been rough lately, sorry I wasn't in the mood to deal with the consequences of my actions. Can we not talk about it?"
"About you being a dick or about the other thing?" Peter's voice quieted as they both danced around the word.
Kaelyn, however, tired of the games and just spat, "Listen, Peter, we kissed, it meant nothing. The best thing you can do is just get over it and chase after Liz instead, okay?"
"I feel like there's a deeper problem here, but I'm too exhausted to get into it," Peter groaned, "I just wanted to let you know I was safe, that's all. Also, you're telling me why you can stop bullets and stuff sometime soon because that is incredibly new information to me."
"Yeah," the girl scoffed, "It is to me too. Listen, I guess we'll just talk later, okay? Thanks for letting me know. Bye, Peter."
The boy was silent for a moment, "Yeah, bye, Kae."
Then the call was ended and William Tju, a boy Kaelyn hadn't seen in probably a decade, pulled up in front of her. Now she had to go home and face her issues. This night somehow kept getting worse, but she was determined to make it through. She would. She knew she would.
idc if giving Kaelyn superpowers is lame im doing it and none of you can stop me
