Epilogue: Where Are They Now?
Diana is now a stable, on-call photographer for BBC World News. She helps out the with online articles and flies all around the world reporting the stories of others using her camera rather than her words. She isn't looking for love right now and hadn't been looking for love since she broke up with her not-so-serious boyfriend after getting this job. The kids miss her like hell but she comes around every once-in-a-while. I am happy for her going out and trying to make a difference in the world. She even met Daisy Ridley, who had called her her "twin" all over social media and let her play with a lightsaber.
Sam had settled down in New Jersey after a few more months of travel. She wanted some roots and decided to return to college and get her masters in education so she could help the new generation of nurses. Currently, she has her eyes set on one of the baristas at the coffee house near her apartment... but she is way too shy to do anything except order really complicated and fancy coffees that she hates and ends up throwing away later. I tried to help her on this, but she doesn't want my advice on it. Which is only fair, I was kind of the same way back in high school. Anyway, Sam is also a great babysitter for the kids. While they miss their Aunt Diana, Nico and Lila love having Sam around more.
Madeline currently owns a small-town architecture firm in Massachusettes. She loves it up there and enjoys being her own boss. She always does free renovations on the church and sings in the choir every weekend. She is a long time away, but at least she is no longer living in Amsterdam. I miss being a half-hour away from her like I was in my youth though. Last she told me, she is currently dating a lanky math teacher by the name of John Smith. A very generic name, but I met him. I deemed him fit enough to date my best friend. That conversation was very funny and everyone remembered why they should fear me over the homicide detective that is my husband.
For my mom and dad, they are just chilling in Orlando, Florida. Nothing really remarkable happened to either. They have no worries and enjoy their lives now that they don't need to raise children. We all knew that was happening. My dad did bring home a dog that my mom did not want... again. I haven't asked about that though, because she still stews from the last time he brought home a dog without her permission. It was quite the time.
Jo and Dylan finally had their kid. A bouncing baby boy named Brandon because Jo's best friend had stuck by her in thick and thin for over two decades. They also finished their coup of Loriell and can I say that Dylan is an amazing PR person? I never realised that that was what his job on social media entailed. He was monitoring the company's association with the general public. Genius! Nic, however, is as loud and uncontrollable as ever. She decided to settle down in Rome and is living life up as a chef to its fullest. I miss her when I make tiramisu.
As for Matt and I?
Well, I have a third kid. Her name is Francesca, after my aunt. Matt got a promotion as head of his department and he has been managing work and family as best as he can. I know that, and the kids, I hope, know that too. But, even if they know and understand, that doesn't mean that they like it. I know. I found myself in the same boat when I was a kid. Matt has been great through everything though. He always has been. Now he keeps asking me to try for a fourth kid. I always knew he wanted a big family, but my cap is three kids—
OH MY GOD!
["Ella, what's wrong?"]
["You know how I went to the doctors and got my bloodwork done?"]
["Yeah?"]
["You better brush off your old helmet. You may have a football player in the family yet."]
["You mean that you're—"]
["Yes, Matt, you're gonna be a father, again."]
["WOO HOO! Wait there! I'm leaving the office now! Bye!"]
I guess my cap is four kids now. Anyway, I am working on my first novel to be published. It's in the editing stages and loosely based on one of the cold cases my husband worked on. It's been a hectic year and a half, but I wouldn't trade this life for the world. That's where everyone is now. I wish you a happy Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year!
