SALEM KENNER WAS BORN BENEATH A FULL MOON ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13TH, 1989. Her mother had been telling her husband for weeks that she was going to give birth on this day, and he believed her, because her instincts had never been wrong before.
So when the fateful day came around, and the moon was high in the night sky, Anthony Kenner and his son Jackson sat outside their house on the front porch swing while Leila Kenner gave birth to her only daughter.
It wasn't long, only an hour or so, before Leila came walking out with the small bundle wrapped in a blanket that Anthony took with a sigh of relief. And the man held his daughter against his chest, low enough to let little Jackson see his new little sister. The baby laid peacefully in his arms, making soft noises every now and then while she slept through her first few hours in the world.
And when she awoke finally, still silent and entirely at peace, her fresh eyes set on them and they were met with the pale yellow of her left eye, and the sage green of her right.
Jackson had made an adoring noise, already his sister's biggest fan, and brushed his small finger along her chubby cheek. He'd looked up at his father, then, unaware of the fearful look he'd been sharing with Leila, and asked why her eyes looked like that.
Leila had said, "Because she's powerful, little one. She'll be more powerful than any of us."
And at four years old, that answer was satisfactory enough for Jackson, so he'd dropped the subject entirely. He was unaware of just what that would mean for them as a family, as his little sister got older and became aware of her own power.
With the distrust already running deep towards Leila amongst the pack because of her witch heritage, when the true nature of Salem's existence was brought into question, the Kenner family knew that there was little they could do to stop them from alienating Salem even though she was just as much of a werewolf as the rest of them were.
So one night, when Salem was a mere six years old, Leila left her husband a note explaining that she would not allow the pack to turn on them and their daughter just because she had a power that they were afraid of, and she left in the middle of the night with Salem, never to return.
The two girls, now on their own in the world, made their way to a town in Virginia called Mystic Falls, and they settled there. They lived in peace, and Leila tried her best to keep Salem in touch with her powers while still trying to lead normal lives. Salem went through school happily, and lost the few memories she had of her brother and father as time went on.
On the night of Salem's 18th birthday, yet again beneath a full moon, Leila Kenner went to sleep after a long day of celebrating, and didn't wake up the next morning.
Salem grieved and time moved on, and she eventually went to college before returning back to Mystic Falls, the only home she ever remembered. She got a job teaching art at the high school and made friends with her coworkers, and figured that as long as her mother was gone, nothing from their past could ever catch up to them.
She should've known that nothing was ever that simple, especially in a town like Mystic Falls.
