" 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘳 "
"𝐈 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐘 to go on a college visit, and you manage to get yourself put on house arrest?"
Elena huffs, stuffing a few pieces of popcorn from the bowl they were sharing into her mouth. "I'm just trying to what's going to keep everyone safe."
Violet gave her a sympathetic look. "Everyone is trying to keep you safe, Elena."
"But why me!" She through her hands up in exasperation. "Why does everyone think it's better to save me than for me to save everyone else? I would never be able to forgive myself if I was the reason all of you die."
She sighed, trying to think of a better way to explain the others points of view to Elena. "Listen, I get where you're coming from, I do. But think of it this way–if this Klaus guy breaks the curse for vampires, not only are there gonna be vampires, good and bad, roaming around freely in the sun, but the supposed most powerful vampire in history. Keeping you safe isn't just about saving your life, it's also for the greater good that we keep anyone from breaking it. Ever."
Elena looks contemplative and Violet can tell she hadn't considered that possibility. She would never admit it out loud, but Elena had a habit of making issues about her, ever since they were kids. She always thought it would be something Elena would grow out of, but with Stefan and Damon practically at her beck and call, it seems to have only gotten worse. Understandably, Violet guessed. Most of their recent issues have revolved around the three of them.
"None of us want to die, Elena." Violet said, moving her head to catch the brunettes eyes. "But if we don't do what we can to stop this curse from being broken, we're gonna have a lot more shit to deal with. This is bigger than us. Do you understand that?"
Elena nodded solemnly, reaching to grab her hand and squeezing it in a way Violet knew meant she was grateful for the reality check.
The ending credits of Mean Girls played on Elena's TV, and Violet took the silence as an opportunity. "It's getting late." She said, unfolding her legs and standing from the bed. "I should head out. You know how my parents are about curfew."
She didn't, actually. No one did. Over the years Violet had led them to believe that her mom and step-dad were just strict and would ground her if she didn't make it home by curfew. They didn't know that the week or so that she would be "grounded" was just a cover up to give her body time to heal from any bruises.
Of course, Violet still had to see them at school—her stepdad learned his lesson about keeping her from school for so long after he got a letter from the school threatening to take her parents to court. Now he was just more careful to keep his hands in places she could easily cover up with clothes.
"I'll walk you out." Elena said. The two girls left her room, running into her Aunt Jenna at the end of the stairs. She's digging into the hall closet, as Violet and Elena share an amused glance.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Elena asks. Jenna looks up, grinning.
She sighs in relief. "Oh, perfect timing." Jenna shoves boxes into both of their arms. The blonde grunts and stumble back a little. Similarly, Elena let's out a, "Woah."
"What is this stuff?"
"Your mom's files from the Historical Society. I got roped into helping Mrs. Lockwood." Jenna replies, sifting through another box. "And by roped, I mean very excited to participate!" She swings the door shut, and both Elena and Violet jump at the presence of a man she doesn't recognize.
She glances at Elena and notice she looks pale, like she'd seen a ghost. Looking back at the man, she's startled to see his gaze on her. It lingers for a second too long, before he's focused back on Elena. "Hey, I'm Elijah." He says with a friendly smile.
His introduction should frighten Violet. She'd heard all about Elena's interaction with him, and how Stefan and Damon had apparently killed him. So much for that.
But even though she knew the threat he possessed, she couldn't bring myself to feel scared. Sure, she was worried that he would hurt Elena or any of her family now that they knew he was alive, but she wasn't scared.
His presence felt weirdly familiar to Violet. Like the feeling you get after running into a friend you haven't seen in a while. It was the confusion that concerned her more than anything.
"Elijah's in town doing research on Mystic Falls." Jenna tells them, taking the the boxes she previously handed over.
Elijah takes a few steps closer, holding out his hand. "It's a pleasure." Elena shakes his hand hesitantly.
Then he looks at Violet and they meet eyes. Again is the strange sense of familiarity. "I don't believe we've met." He says, voice softer and eyebrows furrowed as if he's just as puzzled as she is.
She shakes his hand and forces a smile. "We haven't. I'm Violet." She could see his eyebrows shoot up curiously but doesn't comment. She feels Elena pull her back towards her and realizes she'd stepped in front of her.
"So, y'know, you're welcome to stay here and rummage through this stuff or the girls and I could help you load it into your car." Jenna offers, coming between the them and resting her hands on their shoulders.
Elijah shrugs. "Yeah, or I can get someone to pick it up tomorrow."
"Also a good plan." Jenna chuckles.
"Thank you so much for inviting me into your home, Jenna." Elijah says as he passes them to follow Jenna towards the front door. His wording and the implication doesn't escape either of the girls. Jenna had invited him in and, therefore, he could enter at any time. "And Elena, Violet," He looks back at them, glancing back and forth. "I hope to see you both again sometime soon."
We watch him walk out the door, bidding a goodbye to Jenna. Elena looks at her, "You can't go out there." She whispers.
Violet shakes her head in agreement. "I know. Go check on Jeremy." Elena rushes upstairs while she ensures Jenna makes it back into the house. She passes Jeremy on the stairs and he gives her a nod, making her sigh in relief.
The moment of peace is short lived however, because as soon as she makes it back up the stairs, she sees Elena standing tense with Elijah behind her.
"Ah, Violet," He smirks. "I think it's time Elena and I had a little chat. Please, join us?" He says the words like a question, but she knows better than to decline.
He didn't speak again until Elena closed her bedroom door. "Forgive the intrusion. I mean your family no harm." He moved a pillow from the bench along her window, sitting politely.
"Why did you kill those vampires when they tried to take me?" Elena asked, straight to the point.
Elijah sat down. "Because I didn't want you to be taken."
Violet's sure she looked just as confused as Elena did. "Klaus is the most feared and hated of the Originals, but those that fear him are desperate for his approval. If word gets out that the doppelgänger exists, there'll be a line of vampires eager to take you to him and I can't have that."
The blonde took a step forward. "Isn't that exactly what you're trying to do?"
The corner of his mouth twitched, his gaze looking almost amused. "Let's just say that my goal is not to break the curse."
"So, what is your goal?" Elena sighed, exasperated.
"Klaus's obsession has made him paranoid. He's a recluse. He trusts only those in his immediate circle." Elijah explains.
"Like you?"
Elijah shakes his head. "Not anymore."
A wave of realization washes over Violet and she cocks her head at the vampire. "You don't know where he is, do you?" He doesn't respond. "So you're trying to use Elena to draw him out."
"Well, to do that I need you," He looks at Elena, "to stay put and stop trying to get yourself killed."
Elena raises her eyebrows. "How do we know you're telling the truth?"
"Well, if I wasn't being truthful, all your family would be dead and I'd be taking you to Klaus right now." The reminder of his abilities seems to startle Elena. Violet subtly bring my hand to my hip, the outline of her pocketknife a comfort. It wouldn't do much, but if Elijah decided to attack it was better than nothing. "Instead, I'm here and I'm prepared to offer you a deal."
"What kind of a deal?"
Elijah stands. "Do nothing. Do nothing, live your life, stop fighting and then, when the time is right, you and I shall draw out Klaus together and I shall make sure your friends remain unharmed." He explains, messing with a book on her dresser.
Violet's eyebrows furrow. "And then what?"
The vampire turns. "Then I kill him."
"Just like that?" Elena questions disbelievingly.
"Just like that." He nods. "I'm a man of my word, Elena. I make a deal, I keep a deal."
Elena looks at Violet but she can only give her a tiny shrug. What other choice did they have? "How are you gonna be able to keep everybody safe?" She asks.
"You know, I noticed you have a friend—Bonnie, is it? She seems to possess the gift of magic." He replies. "I have friends with similar gifts."
Both of them nod understandingly. "You know witches."
"Together, we can protect everybody that matters to you." Elijah says, once again giving Violet a lingering glance. "So, do we have a deal?"
Elena is quiet for a few seconds as Elijah and her both wait for her answer. "I need you to do one more thing for me."
Her mouth falls open a little but she has a feeling she knows what the doppelgänger is going to say.
Elijah smirks a little. "We're negotiating now?"
"You said you know witches?" He nods in response. "Stefan is trapped in the tomb under Fell's Church with Katherine. Can you get him out?"
The mention of Katherine seemed to pique his interest, and he lifted his chin thoughtfully. "Very well."
Violet let out a little breath, checking the clock on Elena's wall. 7:50. "Shit." She curses. "I gotta get home." She says, looking apologetically at Elena. She hates to leave her friend here with Elijah, but she can't risk getting home late.
"It's okay," Elena nods. "Text me when you get home?"
Violet agrees and with one last look at the vampire she sprints down the stairs, saying a quick goodbye to Jeremy and Jenna.
She manages to make it halfway down the block before she hears a voice behind her.
"You know, it could be very dangerous for a young girl like you to be walking alone in the dark." Spinning around, she meets eyes with a Elijah, a small gasp escaping.
She swallows, turning back and continuing her walk at a more brisk pace. "I think i'll be fine." Her words are short, hinting that she's in no mood to talk. To further prove her point, she reach for her pocketknife, flipping it open and holding it up for him to see.
She hears Elijah chuckle. The proximity of the sound makes her realize he was keeping up with her steps effortlessly. She huffs. "Is there something you need?"
"How old are you, Violet?"
She's tempted to not answer, to just ignore him and hope he goes away. But she'd learned over the last few months that vampires seem to share, at the very least, a single quality; stubbornness. She guessed it makes sense, being immortal and all. Doesn't make it any less annoying.
"I turn eighteen next month." Violet mumbles, turning right at the end of the block.
Elijah hums. "You're older than your friends." It's an observation, not a question, so she nods. "Have you lived here in Mystic Falls your whole life?"
She slows down a bit, glancing back at him nervously. "Yeah. As long as I can remember." Her house can be seen down the street. "Why do you need to know these things?"
"Do you feel anything strange?" He asks, vaguely. "Do I seem familiar to you?"
Violet's breath hitches, and she stops walking to keep herself from stumbling. She can feel her heart rate pick up, turning to look at him. "How do you know that?"
Elijah smiles, but it's different than the friendly facade or the cunning smirk she's noticed he's worn tonight. It's sad, almost reminiscent.
He's quite, but instead of answering her burning question, he looks at the tote bag hanging from her shoulder. "Do you have a pen?"
She releases a breath, staring at him blankly for a second. Her jaw shuts as she wordlessly reaches into her bag, pulling out the first pen she feels.
He takes it from her hand, taking out a little notepad from his blazer. She watches him scribble something on the page before he tears it out and hands it to her.
"Please, let me know when you have some time. There are things i'd like to discuss with you alone." Again, the absence of fear around him catches Violet off guard.
Nodding at him silently, she walks the rest of the way to the front porch, making it inside her house just as the clock strikes 8. She could hear her step-dad snoring from her parents room and let her shoulders sag.
Flipping the porch light on, she moves the curtains to the front window and peaks outside. Elijah is there for just a second longer, looking at the mailbox that reads "Robinson" on the side and then speeding off before she can blink.
-
The next couple of days pass by in a blur. Violet doesn't contact Elijah, but not because she doesn't want to know what he has to say.
If she's being honest, she wants nothing more than to find out what he seems to know about her. But she spends an entire day helping Elena take care of Rose after some werewolf who wanted revenge for Mason Lockwood bites her.
They'd heard before that a werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire, but seeing the effects happen in real time to someone who didn't deserve to go out that way, really made reality sink in.
Violet wishes she'd gotten to know Rose a little better before she died. Elena told her about all she shared and that Damon made sure she died as painlessly as possible.
She doesn't get much peace the next day, as she wakes up to the doorbell ringing. The blonde groaned, waiting for a few seconds for whoever it is to assume no one's home and leave. When nothing happens she sinks back into her pillows, just on the cusp of unconsciousness until her phone begins to ring.
"Nooo..." She whines, reaching for the device and bringing up to her ear. "What?"
"It's me!" Caroline's voice says through the phone, sounding distressed. "Let me in!"
"Care?" Violet croaks, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. "What's wrong?"
She sighs impatiently. "Just let me in!"
Violet reluctantly pull the covers off her body, shivering at the goosebumps that immediately appear along her skin. "I'm going." She yawns, hanging up.
Stretching as she walks, Violet barely unlocks the door before it's swinging open, a flash of blonde hair pushing past her. "Come in?"
"Violet! It's almost 11! How are you just getting up?" Caroline exclaims, crossing her arms over her chest.
She trudges to the kitchen, turning on the coffee maker and grabbing a mug from the cabinet. "It's a Saturday, Caroline. I'm sleeping in like a normal person."
"Okay, well, while you were sleeping soundly in your bed, Tyler was confronting me because he found out that Mason is dead!"
Violet chokes a little on her coffee, coughing into her elbow before she stares at Caroline incredulously. "What? How did he find out?"
Caroline ran a hand through the loose waves in her blonde hair, eyebrows furrowed in distress. "I don't know! He just showed up at my house this morning and told me all about how he knows that Stefan and Damon are vampires and that Damon killed his uncle! What am I gonna do?" She asked, slumping on the couch.
She chugged down the rest of her coffee, talking as she rinses the mug out in the sink. "You have to tell Stefan. I would say Damon too but I think he'd probably just kill him." She tilted her head thoughtfully. "Though that would probably get rid of a few of our problems..."
"Violet!" Caroline scolded. "This is Tyler we're talking about! He's been our friend since elementary school."
She rolled her eyes, "He's been your friend since elementary school. Tyler has always been an asshole even when we were kids." Violet says, putting her mug in the dishwasher. "Look, I'm not saying he deserves to die or that I want him to. But what happens now? Tyler is this huge, furry ball of rage who just found out his uncle was murdered by our vampire friend. Him and all Mason's werewolf friends could come after you guys! I mean, look at what happened to Rose! That could be Stefan or Damon or you."
Caroline frowned. Violet sighed, feeling a little guilty at the harshness of her words, but it was the truth. She came to sit beside the taller blonde, wrapping an arm around her shoulder and smiling sadly as she felt one of hers slip around her waist.
"You're my sister, Care." She leaned her head against the girls shoulder. "If it meant keeping you safe, I would call Damon right now. Hell, i'd grab my crossbow and go with him!"
Her best friend giggled, squeezing her tight against her. "I'm supposed to be the big bad vampire who's meant to keep you safe, not the other way around."
Violet shrugged, grinning. "And I'm the defenseless human here. I gotta hold my own somehow."
They were silent for a minute, taking comfort in each other. Then a thought crossed Violet's mind.
"Care?" The vampire hummed. "Why do you care so much what happens to Tyler? I know he's a friend and all, but you seem a little too invested in him lately." She felt her tense up as she pulled away from the embrace.
Caroline cleared her throat. "No reason. Like you said, he's our friend." Her words said one thing, but her guilty eyes said another. And Violet new her best friend better than anyone.
"Caroline Forbes!" She gasped. "You didn't!"
Caroline winced, covering her face with her hands. "I did." She whimpered, shaking her head shamefully.
Violet's mouth fell open as she tried to process Caroline and Tyler potentially being together. "I can't believe you. What about Matt? I thought you were trying to fix things?"
"I am!" Caroline said. "Or I was? I don't know, I was telling Tyler before he blew up that nothing else could happen between us. I highly doubt anything else will now."
She narrowed my eyes at her. "What did happen?"
Her pale cheeks became pink. "It was just one kiss! A heat of the moment kind of thing."
"Was it good?" Violet asked curiously, though her lip was still curled a little in disgust.
Caroline shrugged, "For what it was, i'd say so."
"Gross, Care." She shivered. Caroline shoved her shoulder, grinning as she rolled her eyes.
"Whatever. You wanna tag along with me to go break the news to Stefan?"
Violet shook her head, looking down at her wrinkled t-shirt and scratching her scalp, where she knew her hair was probably an oily mess. "No, you go ahead. I can meet you at the grill later?"
"Sure!" She chirped, already grabbing her bag. "I'll text you!" Caroline was out the door before she could respond.
-
Violet did indeed meet her best friend at the Mystic Grill later that day. The two blondes had dinner then enjoyed an evening of shopping to wind down from everything that had been going on lately.
As the night came to an end, Violet and Caroline headed over to the vampires car, talking and giggling about anything and everything. For Violet, and she images Caroline felt the same, it was nice to have a sense of normalcy. To just feel like two teenage girls again.
A male voice interrupted their conversation, the girls turning back to see Matt jogging up to them. "Hey!"
They shared a glance. "Hey." Caroline greeted back softly. Violet echoed the greeting to Matt.
"I haven't seen you." Matt said.
Violet pressed her mouth closed, already seeing where this interaction was going and feeling awkward. She cleared her throat. "Hey, I'm gonna go wait in the car. Keys?"
Caroline nodded, handing over her car keys. Violet stepped away, sitting quietly in the car as she subtly watched her two friends talk in the reflection of the passenger mirror.
She was neutral about Caroline's relationship with Matt. He was a nice guy, always had been. The two had never been close but were always in the same friend group since they were kids. Her opinion only slightly changed after his breakup with Elena, and how he acted like she owed him something once Stefan came into the picture. But if he made Caroline happy, she supposed she could look past it.
Once Violet saw Matt leave and Caroline make her way to the car, she averted her attention back to her phone, texting her mom that she'd be home soon.
It was only when she realized that Caroline had yet to get in that she looked up. The vampire was standing against driver door but her head was looking back. Violet could vaguely hear a feminine voice and saw someone standing behind Caroline.
She watches Caroline turn back around and open the door. "I know you're lying." She hears clearly without the barrier of the door.
Caroline pauses before she pivots around. "Really? How? Is that one of your little wolf tricks?"
Violet freezes, realizing that the only person this woman could be in Jules. Jules, Mason Lockwood's very loyal friend. Jules, who told Tyler about vampires. Jules, who bit and killed Rose.
"Actually, it is." Jules replied, a certain smugness to her voice that had Violet clenching her jaw.
"Well," She stayed silent as Caroline threw her purse in the car and closed it right after. "I have a trick too." Violet heard her say. Her heart pounded as Caroline hissed at the woman, reaching into her jacket for her pocketknife when the vampire cried out and fell against the car.
Violet wanted nothing more than to get out and help her friend, but she wasn't an idiot. She might be able to briefly hold her own, but without the proper weapons, there's no way she'd stand a chance against a werewolf.
With all of her focus on where Caroline stood, she failed to notice the presence on her side of the vehicle. She jumped as the door was flung open, her body being pulled out forcefully. Violet was pressed against the car, a hand coming up around her neck.
"And who might you be?" The same voice from earlier asked. Her eyes widened once she realized it was Jules holding her. A gunshot rang out from behind her and she gasped, only able to see Caroline's body collapse from her peripherals.
"Caroline!" She yelped, tears welling in her eyes as the gravity of the situation settled in her gut.
Jules hummed understandingly. "I see. You're the human." She says, looking at a point behind Violet, where the girl assumes in the person who shot Caroline. A smirk grows on the woman's face. "This is gonna be even more fun than I thought."
Her grip on Violet's neck tightens, enough that she begins to struggle, hands coming up to scratch at her attackers arms as she gasps for even a little bit of air.
Black dots begin her litter her vision, her heart that was racing starting to slow until her eyes grow heavy, unconscious consuming her body.
─────────────────────
I'm trying not to change too much about the original story so you'll notice that this chapter is very similar to the previous version, just with a little more filler scenes that I added to round everything out and help with violet's lore. another important thing I changed was violet's age. in the previous version, she was the same age as the rest of the main characters, but I feel as if she should be older as to be more suited for a relationship with Klaus later on. the age gaps in this show are crazy so I'm doing my best to stick to my morals now that I'm older and realize how weird it is. as always, let me know what you all think of the chapter and fill free to leave any suggested changes to the original story, I'd love to hear your ideas!
