chapter twenty nine. erin's mom.

"Mav, I've been blind folded for a while now. It's not sexy anymore. What's going on?"

"I have a surprise for you, baby" Maverick whispers into his girlfriends ear, standing right behind her. Shivers ran up Maxines spine, she bit her lip in excitement.

"Mav" she whines, "come on"

"Patient princess. All great things come to good girls who wait" then he takes the blindfold from her eyes, "happy birthday, baby"

As Maxines eyes adjust to the light, she sees a candlelit dinner in the kitchen and she smiles as her stomach rumbles.

"Oh, Mav. You did this?" Max asks, turning around to face her boyfriend. Maverick smiles, placing a hand on her cheek, "I did"

"It's beautiful, but my birthday isn't until tomorrow"

"I know, but I couldn't wait and there's more"

"More?"

Maverick nods his head, grabbing onto Maxines hand and brings her down the hall to his bedroom. Maxines heart swells with love when she sees rose petals on the bed shaped as a heart, candles lit all around and three perfectly wrapped boxes on the dresser.

"Maverick, this is too much"

Maverick lifts Maxine up bridal style, who giggles wrapping her arms around his neck, and says, "you deserve more actually. and whatever my princess wants, she gets"

Maxine smiles, leaning in for a kiss, "you're too good to me"

"And you're too good for me"

Maxine smile turns into a devilish smirk, "do you have the blind fold?"

"Yeah, it's in my pocket. Why?"

"Because I think I want my dessert before dinner"

"Ooh, Ms Bishop. Are you trying to seduce me?"

"Yes, I am Mr Connors"

Maverick walks over to the bed and gently places Maxine down on it, and caresses her cheek, lifting her chin up, "you're so beautiful, princess. My princess"

"your princess" Maxine smiles. Maverick takes the blindfold out of his pocket and asks, "you trust me?"

"With my life"

Maxine walks into the district lobby, a coffee in hand and a bright smile plastered on her face, ready to head up to the unit when she hears, "Bishop!"

Max turned around to see Platt waving her over and says, "what's up, Sarg?"

Trudy takes out a huge package of twizzlers and sets it in the desk and slides it over to the detective, "happy birthday"

Maxine smiles, "whoa" then she gives the desk sergeant a fist bump, "you're the best, Sarg. Thank you" then she walks away.

Maxine walks onto the unit and goes to sit at her desk, setting her coffee and twizzlers down to see a single cupcake and she smiled. Voight always left a cupcake on her desk for her birthday, red velvet with vanilla frosting and a single candle.

Erin closes Voights door behind her and says, "don't get too comfortable. We gotta do a drive by on a possible offender" then she grabs her coat from her desk.

"Bunny?" Maxine asks, standing up and taking a sip of her coffee.

"I'll explain later" Erin says and the two partners leave.

Erin looks over at her friend who was just smiling, drinking her coffee and says, "you know, ever since I've known you, you have always hated your birthday. Why are you so smiley?"

Maxine looks over at Erin and lays her head on the headrest, "I met someone"

"Ooh. Give me details"

"His name is Maverick. He owns a nightclub and he treats me so good"

"Good for you, M" Erin smiles, "I'm happy for you"

"Thanks E" Maxine says then looks over to see Vosh carrying a bag,"Where's the box truck?"

"Let's find out" Erin says then they follow after Vosh who had gotten into a black mustang.

A couple minutes later they stop when they see Vosh just staring at a building.

"Either he's buying a new muffler..." Maxine starts.

"Or he's casing that check exchange"

Then they see Vosh get out of his car and walk towards a woman who tried to unlock the store and points the gun at her.

Erin gets over the radio and says, "we got a robbery in progress. Requesting back up. 2145, Dearborn"

"Only two ways out"

"Let's go" Erin says, driving onto the sidewalk and up to the door to block it from opening with the car. Then the two detectives get out their long guns and slowly make their way to the front of the building.

"Hey! police! Get across the street" Maxine yells at the civilians, then as they make their way to the front she checks to see if the doors locked, then she shoots at the door to open it, "Damn! Bullet proof glass!"

"Let's tear gas him" Erin says, as they slowly make their way towards them as the woman screams for help.

Max opens up the small vent near the ceiling with her gun and Erin drops in the tear gas. As they put on their masks, Vosh tries to make his way out the back of the store but is trapped by their car.

"Police! Hands up!" Maxine shouts.

As they make their way out of the room from coughing so much, Max yells, "drop your weapon! Let her go!"

The woman then bites Vosh, who instinctively lets go from the pain and maxine shoots him.

As Max goes to turn him over and cuff him, Erin rushes over to the woman and asks, "Are you okay?"

"My boy. My husband. He...he has them. He's holding them hostage"

"Who does?"

"He does!" She says pointing to Vosh. Max gets over her radio and says, "Kirby 5021. Shots fired by the police, offender down. Roll an ambo to our location"

"what's your name?" Erin asks.

"Sarah Normark. My...my husband, Dean. My boy, Travis. He has a photo of them!" Sarah says, coughing, "it's on his phone"

Maxine tosses Erin the offender's phone and she looks through the photos and spots the picture of Dean and Travis tied up and asks, "where is this?"

"It could...could be our basement"

"Okay, what's your address?"

"73398, north Racine"

Erin gets over her radio and says, "Lincoln 5021. I need a patrol unit to check on a possibly abducted family."

"Tracked the cell on the other end of Vosh's phone" Adam says, taping Voshs mugshot onto the board, "it was thrown into a dumpster near the river. Roman and Burgess are checking it out"

"Right. This is Gina Gawronski" Antonio says, introducing the brunette next to him while Maxine stuffs her face with another twizzler, "We used to work Vice together. Now she's rocking it in robbery Homicide"

As everyone welcomes Gina, she says, "looks like you guys caught a crew we've been trying to get for months. You have one offender in custody?"

"This man, Nick Vosh. He's over at Chicago med in surgery. Whoever he's working with, though, is still out there with Sarah Normarks family, so..." Adam says.

"From what we know, there's two of them, and they've robbed seven check exchanges in the last two months."

"Well, check exchanges aren't FDIC, so FBI won't get involved" Al states.

"That's right. And you can steal more than you'd get at most banks. These guys have grabbed 50 to 60k each time. Nearly half a mil so far."

"Alright, what do we have on them?" Hank asks.

"Until now, not much. Two white males, well built. One robs the check exchange manager, the other one holds their family hostage in a box truck. There's no GPS in those old trucks, so they're difficult to track"

"It's like a moving prison cell" Jay comments.

"We were hoping the reward money would help us catch a break, but.."

"What reward money?" Erin asks.

"About a week ago, the check exchange put up 25 grand for any information leading to the arrest of the offenders"

Erin sighs then looks at Hank knowing Bunny only did this for the money.

"So if this guys out there, and he knows his partner got popped, no telling what he'll do with the family" Antonio says.

"That's right. And he's the more violent one of the two. During their third robbery, a dye pack went off in his face when the manager was handing over the cash. So he shot the manager's wife and dumped her body in the forest preserve."

"Alright, thanks. We'll take it from here"

Jay slides his chair over to his partner and sets a small, square box that was awfully wrapped on her desk. Maxine looks over at her partner, "Jay.."

"Happy birthday, partner"

Maxine smiles and picks up the small box and unwraps it. She opens it up and her mouth drops, then looks over at the taller man, "Jay, this—this is too much. I can't expect this"

"But it's your birthday. I wanted to get you something special"

Max smiles at Jay then goes to open the small gold locket to see a picture of her, Adam, Erin and Jay and unknowingly to the both of them, that was the moment she knew she loved him, "This means a lot to me" then she brings jay into a hug, "thank you, Jay"

"Anything for you, angel"

Maxine gets out of her car, along with the rest of the team, her hands sliding into her coat pockets as they meet up with Burgess and Roman.

"The missing box truck with the Douglas company logo was spotted driving past a red light camera two blocks south of that intersection" Roman says, pointing behind them, "seems it just vanished somehow between this three block stretch"

"So the streets flanked on one side by the river, on the other by industrial buildings. It's pretty desolate" Burgess adds.

"Everybody fan out. Check any building with a garage" Voight Orders, "grab the infrared scanner"

After Al and Adam find the box truck, they call the fire department to help get the truck out of the water.

The team stands around the truck as one of the firefighters opens the back of the truck. Maxine looked down at her snowed covered boots, "damn"

Maxine stands in the viewing room in interrogation, as Hank and Erin interview Jard Miko, Voshs partner.

"Hell of a stain you tried scrubbing off there, slick" Hank says, going to sit on the edge of the table, while Erin stands behind him and Miko sits on the bench, cuffed.

"You know you didn't have to kill that little boy and his dad. Could've just parked that truck and walked away" Erin says.

"What's anyone ever done for me?" Miko asks.

"Oh, I can tell you what we're gonna do for you. We're gonna make sure you wind up buried inside prison walls."

"It was that moving company lady, wasn't it?"

"What?"

"Yeah. What's she call herself? Bunny. That bitch" Miko says, making Max sigh, "Vosh was paying her double to get a truck. She gets greedy and hits him up for triple. He says no, and she gets a conscience, goes to the cops. Is that it?"

"So you're saying she knew what you were up to?"

"As long as Bunny got hers, she never questioned it"

"Wait a second, you're saying that you think you're here cause of some cashier at a moving company?" Hank asks, then slaps him, "you're here cause we caught you"

"I can do this all night"

Maxine walks out into the hall from the locker room to see her best friend and says, "ready for tonight?"

Adam sighs, "we don't have to wear matching pajamas do we?"

Maxine scoffs, "Uhm, of course we do. It's a birthday tradition. We wear matching pajamas, pick a scary movie and have snacks all night"

"Maxie, don't you think we're getting too old for this?" Adam asks, causing Maxine to frown and he cups her cheeks, "okay, okay I'm sorry. Please don't get upset. We'll wear matching pajamas" and Maxine smiles again.

"Looks like Miko had a razor blade sewn in the waistband of his tracksuit. He used it to slice off the wrist band, then swapped it and his clothes with the other prisoner after he snapped his neck" Roman explains to Voight and Maxine as he, platt and burgess are all in the office across from platts desk.

"And what was the other prisoner in for?" Voight asks.

"Drunk and disorderly. He was sleeping it off" Burgess answers. Platt looks over at her officers and says, "give us a minute"

As Burgess closes the door behind her and Roman, Platt says, "this whole thing, Miko getting cut loose, that's on my watch. It's on me, Hank"

"I'm not gonna play any blame games, Trudy. Don't think anyone thinks any less of you"

"Commander Fischer's on his way in. I'm not gonna hear the end of it"

Maxine places her hand on Trudy's arm, "there's your penance"

Hank then opens the door to the lobby full of patrol officers and says, "listen up. We got an offender who escaped custody. Jared Miko" then he holds up a picture of the suspect, "armed or not. He's considered extremely dangerous."

"He was mistakenly processed out about an hour ago, after assuming the identity of another prisoner he killed. We checked the booking photo of that prisoner, and Miko now has his clothes. He's dressed in dark jeans and a gray sweater. But most importantly look for the dye pack stain on the right side of his face"

"Alright, I want you to check every abandoned building, park, train, bus stop in this district. You bring this animal back through those doors, breathing or not"

After finding and arresting Jared Miko at the apartment building of Nick Vosh's, dad. The team brings him back to the district.

Roman and Burgess take him out of the back of their car. Hank steps in front of the man and smiles, "welcome back"

"I got out once. I'll do it again"

As Maxine turns around, someone with their hood pulled up and walks over to them shooting Miko point blank in the chest. Hank and Max push the shooter up against the brick wall as Al grabs the gun from their hand.

Maxine pulls the hood off the shooter and looks at Hank, as they both recognize her as Sarah Normark.

Jay opens his door to find his partner on the other side, "hey"

"Hi" she says, holding up a case of beer, "can I come in?"

"Yeah" he said, standing to the side to let her in, "what are you doing here? Not that I don't want you here, I just—um..that's not—"

"Jay" she smiles, "I just wanted to see if you wanted to hang out. Adams with Sarah Normark until she sees a judge, so I thought what better way to end my birthday on a horrible shift then to be with the best partner in the world"

Jay closes his door and follows the brunette to his couch and sits as Maxine hands him a beer, "all I got out of that was that I'm the best partner in the world"

Maxine rolls her eyes and sits down, "so, the Blackhawks winning or what?"

"Oh, uh yeah by 10"

"Cool" she said, taking a sip of her beer and sliding off her boots, resting her feet in front of her on the couch. Jay looked over at her and smiled before returning his attention back to the game.
