"MILES GET UP!" KATE YELLED, hitting the door multiple times before she stopped. she headed back to the kitchen to get flora started on her work. at least one kid would be situated for the morning.
"fuck you!" he groaned, burying his head further into his pillow. his left arm was tucked under his pillow while his right hung off the side of his bed.
well, mattress.
"i mean it! you're going to be late and school's across town!" kate yelled from down the hall.
"yeah, yeah." he mumbled, forcing an eye open to look at his clock. "eight-o-nine." he whispered, shaking his head slightly.
"shit, eight-o-nine." he gasped, tripping up to get to his bathroom.
"miles! now!" kate yelled across the hall, "i'm getting ready,!" he shouted back, as he ran out of his bathroom. he brushed his teeth quickly as he looked around his room for anything to wear.
roughly, miles picked up a dark purple cable knit sweater with stripes, pulling it over his head and pulling it down his bare chest.
he ran back into the bathroom spitting out his toothpaste before running back into his room, searching around for some pants.
panicked, he ran back into the bathroom as he finished brushing. he splashed water onto his face, wiping it with the bottom of his sweater before running back outside and picking up some black cargo jeans.
he yanked off his dark green plaid pajamas before pulling the dark cargo's on and grabbing his dark blue jansport, running through his bedroom door.
"hurry up; waffles are on the table, grab them let's go." kate quickly said as she saw miles walk into the living room.
"miles!" flora squealed, getting up and running around the sofa to hug her brother, "hi flora." he breathed, grabbing the plate with waffles in one hand and hugging his sister with the other.
"be safe!" the seven year old advised, tugging on his sweater before skipping back to her plate on the coffee table.
"i will, love you!" he rushed, running out the door and getting into the car.

audrey softly hummed the tune to another micheal jackson song playing on her phone as she pedaled to american high.
the girl's hand swiftly came up to her wired headphones; clicking the small rectangular button to pause as she carefully braked. she was at the intersection to cross the main street.
she pressed the sidewalk's light button, clicking play on her button again. the girl stood ready on her bike as she glanced around at her surroundings. she glanced to the side at the bombay garden restaurant that had been closed since she was eight years old.
audrey sighed, remembering that's where they had her little brother's first birthday. still, she laughed remembering how he looked like a little girl with cake all over his lips that day.
before she could smile at another thought, the sound of a honk invaded her happy thoughts. she turned to the car who had honked before quickly looking back to the street light across the crosswalk that had the signal to go.
she rolled her eyes and squeezed her handles as she propelled herself slowly forward on her pedals.
so very slowly.
"i'll give you something to honk at, toyota body build bitch."
━
as soon as she had walked into the main doors of the campus, she already longed to get on her bike and roam elsewhere.
anywhere but american high.
she sighed, knowing she was already a bit late since she was slower this morning. she strolled into the office, waiting in front of two kids for a yellow slip as a hall pass into her biology class.
just then, a boy walked into the office.
but not just any boy, audrey made sure to remember.
it had to be some exchange student, because one of the office ladies personally got up to assist him.
"over here, sweetie." she said, giving him a tight smile. he glanced at audrey, who was shamelessly staring at him before walking past her up to the lady.
"and which teacher?" she asked, "uh, just room fifty-seven." he shrugged his voice stressing a rude tone, his hands tight in his pockets.
"hello?" the second office clerk snapped, staring at audrey. "o-oh, yeah, uh ms. musa." audrey mumbled, "audrey k."
"all set." the lady slid the slip to her, audrey nodded in response walking out of the office and towards the science classrooms.

audrey doodled in the margins of her notebook, actually trying to give math class a shot.
she didn't know why, she just felt happier today.
a bit more.. forgiving? she hadn't known; she just decided she couldn't stay like this forever.
she stared up at the whiteboard in confusion and got lost in her thoughts after staring at the number seven too long. "audrey, honey? are you alright?" ms. gallen asked, snapping audrey out of her thoughts as soon as her name was called.
"wha–oh no i'm fine," audrey smiled softly, looking down at her paper as some kids around her looked at her.
she continued to doodle until the teacher had announced what the homework was. she scribbled it down in the corner of her page as she grabbed her backpack and got ready to pack up her things.
the bell rang, meaning lunch time with a side of phones had begun before anyone had even walked out of the classroom.
the girl rolled her eyes after standing behind a mob of kids, waiting to get past them, out the door and to the cafeteria.
she stared at the ground hopelessly, annoyed with the kids, annoyed with math, annoyed with the fact that she couldn't be in her bed, or at the park.
seeing that less and less legs stood in front of the doorway out, audrey was just about to look up before a thin black and white swirly piece of plastic caught her eye.
ooh shiny.
the girl bent down to pick up the thin piece of plastic, holding it up to her eyes to examine the small triangular object.
she ran the tip of her fingers over the small gold embellishment which had the two letters M.F. carved into it.
"ms. gallen.." audrey started, as she spun around and walked to her teacher, "do you have a student with the initials, 'M.F.' by any chance?" she asked, holding out the small thin little pick.
the brunette woman stared up at the ceiling as she tried to remember any kids in any of her classes, "no.." she trailed off, "oh! yes, yes i do." she recalled, looking back at audrey, "they're in my sophomore class, why do you ask?"
"does this belong to anyone?" audrey asked, placing the small guitar pick on her teachers desk as she slid it over. "it could be, want me to hold onto it and see?"
"sure." audrey smiled, "what do you want me to tell the person if they find it..?" ms. gallen asked, as she turned to keep the guitar pick on her bookshelf. "i don't know." audrey shrugged, chuckling a bit.
"i'll just tell them a sweet girl gave it to me to give back to the owner." ms. gallen joked, "sure, why not." audrey rolled her eyes with a smile. "have a nice lunch, audrey." the lady said to the girl as she nodded back, "you as well."

class, after class, after class miles had asked every single teacher if they had seen his pick.
he had already asked his sixth period teacher since that was the period in which he found out it was missing.
he just had to ask his fifth period teacher.
miles walked across the campus, fidgeting with lose strings inside his pockets. "hey spiderman! you find your stupid toothpick yet?" some sophomore called across the hall, as more boys around him laughing as they pat him down in laughter.
"it's a fucking guitar pick, asshole." miles yelled in return, tired of his bullshit. "bro he's gonna fucking jump you." one of the other boys muttered.
miles rolled his eyes, fighting the urge to indeed turn around and beat the shit out of the crackhead who called himself a comedian. hurriedly, he walked into ms. gallen's class. "ms. gallen." he sighed, his eyes searching the room. "oh, miles." the woman said, "hi, have you seen–"
"yes, i have, it's right here." she smiled, holding out the small black and white guitar pick for him to grab. "oh my gosh." he sighed in relief. "thank you, thank you so much." he said, quickly putting the pick in his bag.
"your welcome, even though it's not me you should be thanking."
miles looked up in confusion, as he zipped up his bag and slung it over his other shoulder. "a freshman in my algebra one class." she smiled, "she's sweet." the woman said, "didn't take it, immediately asked if it belonged to someone."
"cool," he nodded, "she really needs help with her work though, she has tons of potential." the woman said, staring past his shoulder in thought.
"well, tell her i said thanks for me?" he quickly asked, staring at the older woman. "please?"
"alright, alright i'll do it." she turned around, rearranging textbooks, "you best not lose that pick again." she warned, as miles walked towards the door.
he sighed staring at the small piece of important plastic in between his fingers.
"i won't."
